  2. Thank you for this Topic which might help me.

I have a computer, or a disassembled computer worth about USD700 to me.

The CPU HD MB weighs maybe 2 kilo

I need to send it from Taipei to CM, ASAP

But I have been unable to do so because I cannot afford to lose it in the mail.

What way should I send it, which goes through the Thailand post office, that is safe and will not get lost.

    Thanks

I need the computer but the shipping method and reliability problems are holding things up.

Why dont you get in touch with carriers, i mean i know these several groups who carry ur stuff between china, india, thailand, hong kong, korea and japan on regular basis. They charge per kg. You need not think about custom duty, i have used them from korea and india to bkk at times. The only thing that bothers me is the trust factor, though products r send within a day or 2 but what if they vanish with ur stuff, no way you can get it back. I have met loads of them in bkk area , especially phaurath and pratunam.

  4. Its a load of BS. It depends what side of bed the customs guy gets out of, and what mood he's in. There is already a thread about this somewhere. I ordered 7 kg of protein powder from the UK and they charged me something like 1,500 baht. I thought well thats cheaper than here even with the customs tax on top. The next time I ordered the powder it was no customs tax. Ive ordered $300 watches from the US and paid 80 baht tax, and motorbike boots worth $100 and paid 4000 baht tax. Its a con and a rip off and there should be a chart/list of some sort available. Even if its ticked gift I still get charged customs tax. Its just a game of roulette and if lady luck is on your side then you don't pay the tax.

    agreed its all about luck.

    Hi there,

I have a decent appartment on rama 9 road, lumpini condo, huay khwang, its right next to MRT, shopping malls and departmental stores. I would seriously advice you to increase your budget because if you rent a cheap apartment which may suit your budget, you would land up paying more at the end of every month, if you do your calculations properly as the transportation costs, traffic jams and time waisted while commuting will eventually sum up to be more than cost of a decent apartment rental near bts, srt or mrt.

You need to decide if your schedule in bkk is time bound and have a script schedule wherein you cant afford to waste time or if you have loads of time and energy for commuting.

Its again your personal description. I pay around 17 k for apartment and another 2km 4 electricity, pretty decent, value for money, friendly staff, neat and clean with gym, pool and sona. Have intercom, taxi on call, bike service, 10 baht shuttle to rama9 and thailand cultural centre stations. Have 711, coffee shop, basketball court and big garden downstairs.

Its pretty neat and tidy here and i am completely satisfied , the only this i dislike is that i am tied up in a contract for an year and deposited 45k , rest allz well.n

They don't need to increase their budget. With the budget they have they can find perfectly liveable apartments in walking distance to the BTS (never mind the MRT) in prime areas.

Go a few stops away from the main areas and they can find an abundance of places that are pretty decent.

There will be no issue with traffic jams, transportation costs, time wasted etc as they'll be walking distance to the BTS then a small fee to Asoke.

You're paying 17k for what you can get for under 10k. Sure your apartment is probably more modern and nicer at 17k (at least I hope so!) but for someone on a budget who doesn't care too much about how glamorous the place is (yet still doesn't want to slum it) they can find places in the OPs budget.

I was under the impression it wasn't possible before I came here and expected to pay up to 15k then I spent 3 days looking at places all over town priced from 5k to 15k and honestly the more expensive places were really disappointing and most it seemed were just priced higher because they wanted to attract farangs who though that paying more meant a better apartment but hadn't actually looked at many apartments.

The most spacious place I saw was the 8k room and it had more facilities in the apartment complex than anywhere else even the 15k rooms (which were tiny)!

Point taken, i agree 100 percent, ur talking facts, i replied from my experience which may or may not be correct. Actually i have shop in jj mall jatuchak so its pretty convenient for me as its just 5 stations from here huay khang station.

This apartment comes along furnished with 2 ac, 1 bed, foldable sofa, led, microwave, almiras and modular kitchen , glass tables, shoe racks and modular storage. I strongly feel its value for money as we have just 25 percent foreigners here, thats my best guess. post-181129-13740904490404_thumb.jpgpost-181129-13740905071922_thumb.jpgpost-181129-13740905483268_thumb.jpgpost-181129-13740905856047_thumb.jpgpost-181129-13740906243329_thumb.jpg

  10. I totally understand the way you reacted, however this kind of attitude will not help you long believe me. I have witnessed several cases wherein Farangs have been put behind bars for not much of an offence, you need to understand especially in thailand that laws are meant to be twisted and turned as per the convenience of the lawmakers.

I would like to share an instance, hope it helps

One of my friend had an restaurant and a hotel in central Bangkok, few cops came over and asked him for a glass of water once they moved they came on and stood at the reception, obviously no one will deny giving a glass of water as it is an individuals duty on humanitarian grounds. He was instantly arrested and when he asked the reason they told him that his work permit stated he was owner, however he was working as a staff at his hotel and had no thai employee who served the cops.

He tried to prove that he handed over glass of water as curtsy and not for monetary gains to which he received the weirdest reply under this sky. HAD HE OFFERED A GLASS OF WATER OUTSIDE HOTEL PREMISES IT WOULD HAVE BEEN OKAY BUT THE PLACE OF OCCOURANCE WAS WITHIN PREMISES , which levies a penalty up-to 100000 baht and/or deportation.

He was not in good books of few cops and like you he was standing up for his rights.

He was deported and blacklisted, he has his business here which is being taken care by one of his associates, its been 4 years he is trying to get the case reopened but nothing happens till now.

He has invested over 8M THB here all went down the drain. Better watch out next time mate.

It wont get you anywhere, except behind bars or back to your homeland.

Thailand is a land of smiles, overlook few things and move on easy.

    God bless.

  11. Finally received my parcel from lad phrao thailand post office, they say that packet was not opened by customs they just calculate on basis of the description, unfortunately my friend had mentioned medicined on parcel so duty percentage was 40 percent plus vat, so i understand the way it was calculated... Hmmm .. post-181129-13739754289494_thumb.jpg

  12. Last year had to pay duties and vat for 32000 baht when i imported via fedex, post-181129-13739576975335_thumb.jpg that is okay because the cost was over 4000 dollars and custom duties were levied on it because it was for commercial purpose, however in this case the items are for personal use and not bulky or expensive.

  13. How is this a "Rip Off"?

Almost every Country in the world charges Import Duty (and V.A.T. in most cases) on many categories of goods Imported into that Country.

Don't forget you are paying Import Duty on the value of the goods plus the Freight Charge by the way - again, that is standard practice worldwide.

You were somewhat unlucky that the package was stopped by Customs since it was apparently sent via ordinary Mail and I would guess 95% of items sent that way are never charged Duty but that's just the luck of the draw.

    Patrick

I am pretty much aware of the way duties are calculate, there is a permissible value of goods wherein duties are not charge . In these items my duty should have been waived as its not in bulk and value declared is only 60 dollars.

  14. I asked a friend of mine to send a parcel to me from Seoul, south korea.

The actual and declared value were same its 60 dollars, now i get a notification from Thailand post for 2kg parcel which consists of some ginseng medicine and lip bam and weighs 2 kg.

I mean this parcel delivery charge is a hefty enough and thai customs want to charge duty on top of it , its so dam depressing and unbelievable, can i dispute this customs charge by any chance.

I really want suggestion because earlier i have imported goods from India worth over 2000 dollars without paying a penny so what this freaking charge is all bout, kindly guide folks...

Its just not Bout merely 600 bhat its about the rules and regulations followed, need some serious advice, i am ready to go to any extend to dispute this, even if takes me couple of months. Just is just... This is a simple rip off and i wont take it no matter what.

  16. Here's the Bangkok Bank application criteria for a credit card, whether Thai or expat: Link

Although the criteria says they are looking for at least a Bt15K/month salary I expect that really applies to Thai's and for an expat it would be a higher amount like whatever minimum amount is associated with a work permit.

There is no minimum salary for a work permit.

Yes there is. Minimum salary for work permit, depends on nationality, most of asians require minimum 30k baht salary, us uk require 50 k, burma requires around 20 k. There is a minimum salary.

  17. When this happens to me, it's usually not at the most polished of restaurant operations. I wouldn't assume the undercharges would usually be discovered by the owners of such places.

This may surprise you but there are various ways of calculating the sale. At Mc D they count sales of coke n pepsi by counting glasses, few take orders at name of the cash collector, few at serving staff and deficit has to be paid by them. I have even seen a restaurant wherein if the cook makes a bad dish then he cost goes to him. At few fast food joints if you want an extra glass , then you will have to pay the amount of the soft drink weather u take the soft drink or not.

I was having food at a thai restruant late night suddenly saw waiter in action and running here n there, seemed like he has almost lost it and then went outside the bar like totally crazy. when i asked him later he told me dat the customer who was seated at next table forgot to pay for his second round of drinks, almost 400 baht and he would have been held liable for that amount....

  18. I could have done the same at many times however I am completely aware of the fact that the investors and business owners are smart enough and would never bear the loss of their staffs stupidity of mistake so ultimately the poor and unfortunate person who assisted or attended you will bear the loss out of his salary. That feeling wouldn't give a peaceful sleep.

On the other hand if you talk about small business owners, if they get a rip off of a certain amount which may not be a big deal to one of us may be a day or 2 days surplus to them.

I may spend 200 dollars enjoying with friends and family members but it will be very hard for me to digest even 20 dollars of rip off at my work.

  19. Although it never happened to me here i like to think i would correct the mistake ,

One time in greece pre euro times i changed money at a bank and noticed as the cashier was counting that she was about to hand over nearly twice the amount of the exchange...normally i would stay at the counter and check carefully but on this occasion i took it and made a quick exit to my car and was gone fast Posted Image

    LoL

  20. Seems not an easy task to get one, however these lucrative deals push me further to enquire about cdit cards, i guess the best way out is to deposit an amount of about 70 to 100k and then get one. Based on card to card approval probably after 6 months of usage i can apply with another bank..

Thats the way it goes in my country , get one card based on it get another and so on, the best part is that the bank issuing credit card never gives li it less than the previous one you gave for reference. For eg if i give citibank credit card statements to icici then my card limit will be 170 or 200 percent of what i had with citi..

  21. As I eat out a lot, this happens more often than some might think ... getting UNDERCHARGED.

Yes, getting overcharged is more common but this is about when you're undercharged at a restaurant in Thailand.

It happened to me again last night.

I "complained" about the bill, well the staff assumed I was complaining because why else would you question a bill.

It seemed to really shock the staff that I was insisting they put ON an item they forgot to charge me for.

I reckon they thought I was totally bonkers and perhaps they're right.

Well this was a place I am fairly regular at and I didn't feel right about getting a freebie there unless they explicitly say, this is a special freebie for you, going back there and being remembered as someone who underpaid before.

But I do that in any restaurant here ... insist on paying for all I should be charged for.

Perhaps that is "very white" of me but conditioning dies hard.

So how do you react when you're UNDERCHARGED in restaurants in Thailand? Do you just let it go?

My situation was very similar, had the same experience thrice i believe, when i asked them to add on charge for another dish or drinks, they would thank me for doing so and yes they are surprised cuz i believe its not a very common practice out here, i mean thats my best guess, not sure..

I was very surprised once when i asked a young lady to add on another 40 baht to the bill because the big chicken cutlet i ordered was supposed to be 120 and not 80 baht to which she replied the bill is correct actually as it was not a full plate of what i had ordered, little more than half dish but not full as her stock for chicken was over for that day, to which i was surprised. She thanked me for being generous.

Finally respectfully joined her hands, bend a bit and very politely said khapun khrap....

You get an apple for an apple. Land of smiles.
