  1. whistling.gif Many years ago I had a U.S. dollar account in Thailand through the then Chase Manhattan Bank of New York branch here in Bangkok..

Don't think that is possible now with any bank.

Anyhow, there were and probably still would be restrictions on withdrawing funds in Thailand in dollars.

As I recall (it was a long time ago) I could deposit funds in dollars but only withdraw funds in Thailand in Thai baht.

And any funds I wanted to transfer out of country needed a tax form from the Thai government to transfer out of country.

That was a long time back though, 1990 or 1991.

The rules have been liberalized since then, it's now quite straight forward to move currency in and out and exchange at will, the only question is the cost. But actually, it's quite cost effective and very efficient for an American say to transfer USD from the US via Bangkok Bank New York using ACH and have those funds deposited in Thailand in a USD account, as long as they don't plan to transfer USD back out again.

My thoughts were to transfer dollars in and take dollars out. But after reading the BKK Bank web site and the replays here, it doesn't sound that it works that way. Do all withdraws need to be in Thai Baht?

  2. If you google electric fence, cats you will see remarks about this being cruel. (Rubbish). If you combine the fence with a yellow plastic band, you can be sure that the cats, that will only ever touch the fence ONCE, will associate yellow plastic with discomfort. Seems like a waste of money to install something that will only get utilised once or twice a year, but it works. If you live near Buriram I can give you a cattle fence box, no guarantee, I haven't used it for 20 years. Needs mains 'lectrics though.

In America I installed a electric wire on a fence that my 2 dogs were jumping over. I installed the wire, got on the other side and called them. With great eagerness they jumped the fence and got shocked. After that, they wouldn't come closer than 3 feet to the fence. I left it on for about 2 weeks and accidentally got zapped several times by it. It didn't hurt but was uncomfortable and certainly got your attention. After several weeks I turned it off but the dogs never again jumped the fence. As I remember there was 2 transformers to choose from. One for cattle and one for small animals. I bought the one for small animals.
  3. I too sold my 560 SM house in the USA, all my "stuff" and left behind a life time of friends. I discovered having lots of possessions including friends has it's obligations and is confining. I now live in a 120 SM condo and consider it huge. I have a lovely Thai girl friend, a few nice Farong friends here and lots of time for myself. I don't think I could ever fit in again in the US. I would just be another old man living alone. I have a grown daughter and a brother that I chat on the phone with each week and visit each year but other than that I have no connections with my past life.

Is your thai girlfriend OLD like you

My gf is 45 but looks 25. Each day we both spend an 2 hours in the gym or on the bicycle. It seems to work better for her than for me. No matter what I do, I still look 67. ;-)

  4. I am wondering if the USA crashes like in the Great Depression, would social security payments still be safe, and what about peoples retirement from hospitals would that still be safe?  Some of us live on this alone without savings, and have to live outside of there own country in order to get by.

It's not a matter of "if" but "when" will the US dollar crash. Remember this famous quote, "Something that is unsustainable won't last forever". I would imagine IMF/Federal Reserve will eventually downgrade the value of the dollar and we will be left with something with 1/2 the purchasing power. It will happen quickly and enexpectantly. Gold, land and foreign bank accounts are worth consideration prior to the inevitable crash.
  5. I live on the 27th floor in Pratamnok and lots of dust. After 6 months I cleaned the A/C filters and was shocked to see the dust build up. I can see it must be done every 2 months from now on. I have a great housekeeper that comes once a week and leaves it spotless.
  6. There is a shop on the ground floor of Tukcom that specializes in Apple. It's located SE corner. It's set up like an Apple Store but I don't think it's a real licensed Apple Store. That being said, I have taken my Mac in for RAM upgrades and they did it quickly and without issue.

  7. Most people want to "fit in" and dress to mirror others in the culture. In 1967 my buddy and I traveled by train to Mexico City to participate in a wrestling tournament prior to the Olimpics. The train had a 6 hour stop over in Guadalajara. Dressed in Bramuda shorts, T shirts and sneakers we went off to explore the city. From the reaction we got from the locals you would have thought we were stark naked. Men on the street would whistle at us and cars would slow while occupants ogled us. We were confused about all the strange attention until we bumped into another American who lived in Guadalajara. He told us that men ware pants in the city and Bramuda shorts are only worn only at the seashore. Things have changed a lot in 50 years in Mexico. Culture and dress continues to evolve all over the world - even in Thailand.

  8. I have never seen anyone benefit from "free money". In the USA parents have heaped money on their children only to have them become angry and useless adults. For years the federal government has given huge handouts to once proud segments of the population only to make them unhappy and more dependent on welfare. Having to make your own money encourages people to make wise decisions in life. Giving people handouts allows them to continue to make poor decisions with out the unpleasant consequences.

  9. Place it in a plastic bag and put it into a freezer for 24 hours. It will kill everything.

That's a good idea except for the fact the chest measure aprox 1 M X 1 M. x .6 M. Unfortunately my condo isn't equipped with a walk in freezer. How nice it would be to lock myself in on a hot day like today. :-)
  10. No, I'm not hilusinating on drugs. I really do have bugs in my Chinese wood chest. In the USA we call them powder post beetles. I would assume its a similar bug here. I've tried spraying the interior/exterior with a bug spray like Raid. It seems to slow them down but not kill them. Does anyone have a DIY solution or better yet know a reputable exterminator that could get rid of the little bastards.

    Thanks

  11. So, what's wrong with a bit of punishment? We've all gone through it and it has made (the most of) us into upright, honest and good citizens. I'd congratulate any teacher in Thailand (on any other country for that matter) for teaching my kids a bit of discipline.

Why have we gone soft in the West?

So if I don't like your post, is it ok for me to come over and slap you around with a stick?? Of course not! Why then is it ok for a grown teacher to physically abuse a defenseless child? I don't understand your thinking.
