  1. I bought a high rise penthouse in the Phratamnak area of Jomtien built by a well known Pattaya developer. I wanted the condo built to my specifications and layout so I had professional CAD drawing done with exact layouts. I did floor plans, elevations, schedules and reflected ceiling plans. Everything was clearly detailed and specified. I gave the project manager 8 full sets of drawings figuring he could distribute the drawings to all of various trades. Each day I would check the progress only to find plumbing and electrical out of place. I went to the project manager and he would smile and ask me if I had some more sets of drawings. The next time I checked the progress, I found the plumbing and electrical were indeed moved but not to the correct location. I again went to speak to the project manager and he again smiled and asked for additional sets of drawings. It was only after many times of doing this that I realized that NOBODY could read plans and the project manager was just placating me by asking for more drawings. From then on, I was full hands on with all the trades as there was almost no supervision on the job site. They did everything three times and never seemed to mind the additional cost of time and material. I can't believe the developer puts up with these cost overruns. It must take a big bite out of his bottom line.

  2. Sent my 300 SYM from Kho Samui to Pattaya. The shipping, packing and insurance was about 4,000 baht. It took 5 days and arrived with out a scratch. They said they would drain the gas before shipping but didn't. Took about 20 min in the Post Office. Bring all your bikes paperwork and your passport. Recommend taking pictures of your bike at the post office prior to packaging.

  3. hmm, Star Trek, would only fly with Warp 1, because no one understand the engine guide and they are afraid because they didn't install the service parts, instead they sold them on the black market.

Batman would charge all bad guys with 500 USD under the table.

James Bond would never leave the casino.

The Naked gun with Thai Nielsen would be believed to be a documentary.

The Thai John Wayne would need to go get some of his friends when accosted by the "bad guy".

  4. In my opinion you are looking at this into intirely the wrong way. It is YOU that ruined their day! Had you gone somewhere else to buy your items, you wouldn't have created theses problems for the employees. They were perfectly happy to sit at their place of employment talking, laughing and playing games on their smart phones until you came along and wanted them to work. Now you have the gall to call them and upset their day even more. I would suggest that tomorrow morning when the store opens you are there with donuts and cake and a big apology. On second thought, maybe 2 hours after they open would be better as many of the employees will be late.

  5. I had some household items shipped from the Philippines, one of which was a 60" TV. I have a new condo and had to wait for several weeks for the cable to be connected. In the mean time I connected my Apple TV and the 60" set worked perfectly. When the cable was eventually connected, the picture was in black and white and there was no sound. I thought the issue was with the cable connection since the Apple TV worked well. However a small TV (purchased in Thailand) worked perfectly in the bedroom and when moved to where the 60" TV was it continued to work perfectly there also.

Are TV signals in Thailand different from those in the Philippines and this TV is not recognizing the signal? Is there a fix for it or do I go shopping for a new set this weekend? Thanks

  6. I always carry pepper spray on my bicycle to fend off dogs. When I spray a dog it immediately looses all interest in my ankle and beats a quick retreat. It has saved me many times from a nasty bite. I use pepper spray sent from the USA as it shoots in a 15 foot (3 meter) stream. The pepper spray I have bought at Big C Extra in Pattaya is useless as it comes out as a mist rather than a stream. About a year ago I saw pepper spray for sale in front of the police station on Beach Road Jomtien. I just assumed pepper spray was legal but I made the silly mistake in thinking the BIB and the Thai law had some commonality.

  7. Yesterday I went to Home Works in Pattaya to buy a new big screen TV. However, they had the sound on all the TV's and stereos to the max and was impossible to converse with the sales person. I walked out and went to Num Chai and the noise was even louder there! I've given up the search for a TV for time being and instead bought a good book to read.

That being said, the noise is FAR louder in the Philippines.

  8. For the 1st year of living abroad I told my US income tax accountant I didn't have a bank foreign account. I had transferred the tax paid money from USA bank and figured the IRS wouldn't know and besides they had already got their unfair share. The next year the tax accountant again asked "do you have a foreign bank account" and I again replied "no". Then he told me that the US Government puts a very heavy hand on all foreign governments to disclose the banking details of all US citizens and the penalty is quite severe. I'm sure bank reporting is one of the "hoops" countries must jump through to the receive foreign aid the USA hands out all over the world. I have since reported my bank accounts and have submitted a suplimental returns as I keep over $10,000 USD in my Thai bank account.

Foreign Aid is what rich countries collect from poor people to give to rich people in poor countries.

  9. The Pattaya R/C club are having a big event this weekend and they normally have a variety of stalls selling these products.

Located Pattaya Sukhumvit 89, Nong Hin Soi 5

Im not familiar with that location on the Sukhumvit in Pattaya. Can you give me a landmark to look for? I built and flew RC planes in the USA and would love to do that again.

    thanks.

  10. Apart from the genital herpes, there is also hepatitis B, C and so on which I would not like to get either. And liver damaged by hepatitis = very low quality of life and more diseases (even cancer) soon after. Gonorrhea is a piece of cake compared with anything else, even a flu.

I have a close friend that contracted hepatitis C in Vietnam. He has suffered miserably for the last 15 years with the Disease. Now he finds out that he has a year to live with liver cancer that's connected directly to Hep C. A very sad and difficult way to go.

  11. I have a simple solution if you should get the flu. I lived in the Philippines for 3 years and my housekeeper explained if you put salt in your belly button it will draw the "poison" out of the body. Yes, its the same in the Philippines. If you get wet from the rain, you will get sick. I never understood why the rain makes you sick but there seems to be no problem with a morning shower. The housekeeper explained it was different water.

  12. I agonized over the decision between a 300cc and a 400cc. The money difference was not the issue for me but handling a bigger bike in traffic was a consideration. After I thought about how much time I spend driving in town and little time I spend on the highway, I opted for the 300. I'm happy with my choice.

Buck99, sounds like the 300 is good in traffic, how is out on the highway? i want something that can cruise comfortably at 120kmh with a couple of farangs on board (combined weight about 150kg) plus maybe a bit of luggage if I fit a top box.

BTW, is your bike the old or the new 300 (i.e the Joymax with the indicators in the mirrors)?

    Cheers

Andy I'm afraid I'm not the one to ask about going 120 km per hour on the Sukumvit. Usually 100 kmh is what I feel comfortable with here in Thailand. Somchai is known to do crazy things and I want some response time to avoid disaster. However at 100 kph there is enough left in the throttle to accelerate should the need arise. I'm not sure what recommended carring weight is but I think 150 kg is within limits. The combined wt of my GF and Me is 130kg and it handles that with out effort. My SYM is a 300i GTS. I believe it's the same as the 300i Joymax-just some minor changes in the body style.

  13. Im going to the USA next week and my GF mentioned she wanted to go to the Temple while Im gone. I asked the reason why she was going to the Temple, expecting the answer to be along the lines of:

to reflect on my life, find inner peace, gain enlightenment or just for the quiet and solitude.

Instead she told me "I want to get luck for the lottery".

I think the meaning of religion is much different to the average Thai vs Falang.

  14. I wanted to add one other thing that I really like about the SYM. It has a great lighting system. With the exception of my Honda Goldwing in the US, all my previous motorcycles were lacking in the lighting department. The SYM has great forward lighting on both the low and high beam. In addition, it has 2 "fog lights" that really illuminate the road and make you highly visable to the other traffic. Also it has LED forward lights that are easily spoted both day and night. The rear tail/break light is exceptionally large along with the turn indicators.
