  1. ..why bother paying a fine when you get a life sentence, what can they do if you don't..
Paying compensation is not a fine, nor is it punishment for him, it's for the benefit of the victims of his crimes. One assumes that the scumbag and his family has the money, else why would the judge decide on that amount? If he's been at it for a while he may well have amassed the 4 million required.

  2. The court would or would not do thorough testing of all possible data depending on it's agenda.
Obviously in this case too much data is not in line with the agenda of this court, as the outcome is predetermined.

The year of the death of the elephant as well as the age of the tusks can easily be obtained by measuring radioactive carbon-14 deposited in tusks and teeth by open-air nuclear bomb tests, the method reveals the year an animal died, and thus whether the ivory was taken illegally.

But they did not do it.

  3. From experience it means they don't understand. Instead of saying they don't understand they say don't have or no. For example I went to buy 1 whole chicken from some vendor that sell only chicken. I ask Khai noung and he said don't have. I point the chicken and he give me 1/2 chicken...
Totally understandable, as you asked for an egg and didn't use a classifier. . .

  4. interesting comments.. ive only been to koh chang once- a few years back... i liked the beach, but not much else to do ...i didnt know about the waterfalls-that sounds nice...
things were spoiled by the thai lady that i went with--she was too lazy to actually do anything...
Same here, one visit is enuf. Just another island that was once beautiful but now very average in that desecrated way the locals specialise in. .

  5. When we were traveling in Vietnam we were not aware of a senior discount for train tickets. We didn't ask they just gave it to the people who qualified when we presented our ID (as needed) when booking the fare. Very helpful, inexpensive, and a lovely trip from Saigon to Nha Trang in a sleeper car. Cheap as chips. I can see Vietnam eating Thailand's lunch on the tourism front once the word gets out, cheaper, cleaner, friendly. When Vietnam opens up it's visa exempt list and extends it to 30 days Thailand's tourist numbers will drop dramatically.
Totally agree. Vietnamese are surely people who are entitled to carry the odd chip on their shoulder when dealing with Caucasians, but they don't seem to. I found them to be down to earth, no <deleted> people who get about their business untrammelled by superiority complexes, and treat Caucasians very well in a matter-of-fact way.

  6. Best to inquire with the airline your using and If return trip
on different airline check. Security has tightened up.

The body scanner yiu have to take every thing out of pockets. I had
a cash register (small) in back pocket and had to go through the second check. ...

better to save a headache at the airport...
Cash register in your back pocket? Sounds fairly ambitious. Was it the old mechanical Remington or a new fanged device?

  7. Easy fixed . Start using the old style string bag. Very small to carry with you when empty, and the neighbours can see the contents very easily!

If no plastic bags how will the folks in my area be able to show others what they have in their bag while walking home from the store?  It is customary to do that up north here, an amusing trait.

  8.
Then you've not been paying attention.  The Sam Mitr faction of the Palang Pracharath Party has featured heavily in the news in recent months.

Sam Mitr is also the name of a well known automotive manufacturer.

And in every supermarket you'll find Mitr Phol brand sugar.

And right up through Isan you'll travel on ถนน มิตรภาพ Mittraphap Road - friendship road.

  9. All we can do is wait and see what comes out and how it is written. Not going to speculate, but I have my feeling there is more to it than that..

"I still find this extremely hard to believe as the hospital will never let you leave until paid in full. How do you rack up a bill and then walk away?"

An easy way to do it (as a mate of mine did recently) is to die.
His good woman had to cough up lots of dosh as he'd been in a govt hosp for more than a month getting treatment for cancer, no insurance, then she had to fund his cremation as well.

  10. Don't see any mention of lowering taxes to boost sales.
Take this as an axample of pricing:
The Toyota CHR, made in Thailand is priced in Thailand at 1,040,000 baht.
Same car for sale in Australia, made on the same assembly line in Thailand, I priced it recently at just under 700,000baht. Drive away.
    What's in the difference? Taxes.

  11. When you get food poisoning ,you get it within an hour or so , not days later when you get home ,so their story is a load of rubbish.
Seems like you need to read and comprehend the story. They didn't get the food poisoning of the type you describe (which most people are familiar with) no, they picked up a parasite.
Mate of mine picked up a similar problem in Thailand, stuffed up his life for an extended period.

  12. Can you not teach her yourself?

I insisted my Mrs utilise a book for daily chores, things to do, we need, general planning. When out shopping if it was not in the book it did not get purchased.

It took a year of nagging to get her to use it. It took a year to get her to use it correctly and now she is an organisation queen. The beauty of it was her English improved dramatically. 3 years but well worth while.
Sounds like an excellent way to learn, but requiring fairly heavy discipline. Your wife must be special to withstand that!
You've given me a positive direction for my Thai language study, thank you!

  13. A special thanks to Meadish for pinning this thread, and editing. I try to keep it as neat as possible but that's the side effect of learning. http://ic.payap.ac.th/certificate/thai/about.php This is the URL for Payap's current schedule, tuition fees, and contact #'s. I started this thread in part to peak interest, because I think they have a great program worth every penny. I know when I was searching for a school, it was hard to come by good 1st hand info, so please if you have any questions about the University or the Thai Studies program, don't hesitate to ask.

    Giving Directions (Part [emoji33]
I've separated the directions into two sections, part A for giving directions to a place, and part B is more for describing where a place is, in relation.
Notice how กับ (with) is used in most of these words.
In class I noted the unusual dictionary definition for เยื้องกับ, I think a better translation for common usage would be "up, down the street from". David I'm sure you have advise here? [emoji3]
    เยื้องกับ – Diagonally Opposite
    ระหว่าง – Between
    ติดกับ – Next to
    ตรงข้ามกับ – Across from
    ใก้ลกับ – Close to
    อยู่บนถนน "___" – On "____" road.
อยู่ในซอย – On the street (Notice how we use บน for road, and ใน for ซอย)
ทางไป – On the way to
อยู่บนถนนทางไป – On the street on the way to…(this is good to use if you don't know the name of the street, but you do know where it goes ex.)
อยู่บนถนนทางไปเชียงใหม่ - (on the road on the way to Chiang Mai)
    Example Sentences
I've attached a map to this post. Let's start with the
    City Hospital (โรงพยาบาลเมือง).
    โรงพยาบาลเมืองอยู่ใหน?
    (Where is the City Hospital?)
    โรงพยาบาลติดกับมหาวิทยาลัยเมืองและเยื้องกับศาลากลางบนถนนMadison Ave. กับ 3rd Street.
(The City Hospital is next to the University, and down the street from the City hall, on Madison Ave. and 3rd Street.)
Now take a look at the map, and try describing a location to your friend!
    map.doc
    โรงพยาบาลติดกับมหาวิทยาลัยเมืองและเยื้องกับศาลากลางบนถนนMadison Ave. กับ 3rd Street.
(The City Hospital is next to the University, and down the street from the City hall, on Madison Ave. and 3rd Street.)

Does not the Thai say: . . . 'and diagonally opposite the city hall'. . . (as opposed to 'down the street')? Bit of a difference if giving directions.
