  1. Traffic in Thailand is actually very safe, if you exclude motorbikes. Motorbikes contribute to 80% to 90% of fatalities. If you exclude motorbike fatalities Thailand would be be among the safest nations in the world. Most European countries have a very small motorbike community and they are mostly pretty safe drivers.

In Thailand most vehicles are motorbikes. There seems to be no enforcement of any laws regarding motorbikes. Helmets are not used, in all neighboring countries you hardly ever see anyone driving a motorbike without a helmet. Pretty much all three wheel motorbikes, like food carts, are illegal. To have a license to to drive a motorbike seems optional, unless you are a tourist. By law you can only be two persons on a motorbike but you frequently see many more, especially if you are near a school where 3 to 4 students, without helmets, arrive without any  intervention from the school, police or parents. There are also numerous motorbike delivery drivers who take all sorts of illegal and dangerous shortcuts.

If the police could find the time to enforce the law regarding motorbikes the traffic fatalities in Thailand could easily be cut by 80%

  2. Most people want to use the beach chairs and the umbrellas. There are several clear gaps between the concession areas and several kilometers of clear beach in the southern end. Just keep them open all week to let the tourists who like them use them.

Jet ski operations should be completely banned as it's illegal to drive a jet ski without a proper license, which none of the tourists have. To allow jet ski operations is the same as allowing illegal behavior, then again, nothing is done to stop people to drive motorbikes without a helmet or vehicles to drive thru a red light.

Where did you find that information?

That was the first information I found. Having looked further, at a number of different references, I may have been incorrect. It looks like you can get an unlimited, probationary, license when you are 15. This license is valid for 2 years and you need to pass all the required practical, theoretical and medical requirements. I have not found any reference limiting the bike to 110cc.

  4. The Thai standards are pretty much the same as international standards in all aspects of traffic safety. The problem is that there is no enforcement by the police. Before covid most people used a helmet, after covid the police stopped checking this and now less than half of the motorcyclists use a helmet.

As for the license, a resent poll showed that 32% of drivers do not have a license.

Without enforcement there will be no change

  5. I just report what I see. I've seen hundreds of news posts om Asean Now where people credit their survival of a traffic accident to their lucky amulet. I'm still to see a single one giving credit to a helmet or safety belt.

As long as people have beliefs like this and ignore traffic regulations and the police don't enforce these regulations we will, unfortunately, have this carnage of traffic deaths.
