  1. FRM,

Thank you for the good information. There is one part of your post I did not get. I have put down a deposit on a new condo project and starting in December 2005, I will be paying 80,000 bht every month for 12 months. At the end of 12 months the balance will be due. I have given already a 100,000 bht deposit. In your section #2 it talks about monthly payments(my situation). The monies will be transferred from the US , but I wasn't sure what you meant. Please elaborate on how you feel is the best way for me to do this and also protect myself as best as possible.

    Thank You,

    Eric

  2. Thanks for all the input. Well, I had the same problem last June while on vacation for 3 weeks in Pattaya. I do make every effort to avoid salt, but that isn't easy in Thailand. I am heading over in November to start my 3rd life. I willbe retiring at 52 yrs. old and if the problem persists, I will have it checked out furthur. This web site is great for gathering info and I want to put out a big thank you to all the people that contribute here.

  3. its not the easiest area to find , its between the river and the bang sue railway station , close to the big bridge that takes the railway over the river , near a small wat called wat bang pho , one soi is called soi prarastdsai 24 , a lot of the sois round there are all wood and furniture stores.

Does anyone have any info on where are the best places in Pattaya/Jomtien to shop for furniture for a condo. Kitchen needs to be put in as well of the normal bedroom and living room furniture. Thanks very much and this board is just the greatest.

  4. I have been retired in Bangkok for three years and never paid any income tax. No (Thai) earned income - no Thai tax.

Most goods and services include the 7% VAT tax, but that is no big deal.

    Chook dee!

Does anybody know if there is property tax when you buy a condo in thailand.

  5. Simcity; drivers license you can get on any visa besides tourist visa.

Bank account I opened (Bank Bank) without a visa at all (just 30 day stam in)

My uilities are all in my name with True/Electric company(TOT) Etc.

In short; all wrong (but I am sure that some front staff somewhere in an office will think up some of their own requirements - that is normally the magic "work permit?" though. :o . Cheers!

if i am not wrong ? you like to add :

with retirement you can apply for a driving license / bank account and have utilities ( mobile phone / internet / electricity ecetera ) on your own name !

firfan , i am in Thailand for over 8-9 years just on a 1 year visa O or sometime 3*3 month O ( no work , not the age to retired )

True did not want me to open a account with me on my visa basic ! Never try for driving license , i have my bank account for the last ten year , no possible to do online banking with them as i do not have the retirement visa ...

4 years ago i try to have utilities & UBC in my name, not possible!

Close friend did put me on his name and open a bank account with automatic draw from these companies!

in short ! all not possible for me !

Thank You Lopburi. I am now very comfortable in my visa concerns. The people on this board are just great.

I am over 50 and getting ready to retire in Thailand. I just spoke to thai consulate here in Los Angeles and they told me I could get a 90 retirement visa here and when I got to Thailand they would stamp it for 1 year. Just show 20k in bank here plus all the letters....doctor,police etc..........not sure if that is the way to go.

LA is talking about an O-A visa. That'll give you a one year stay as soon as you arrive at Bangkok airport.

That is correct Pat. They told me the visa would be a retirement visa and they would stamp it good for 1 yr. at the airport on arrival in BKK. I hope that is correct. I'm not sure if the O-A is a retirement visa or will I have to apply for one at immigration in Thailand and show the 800k baht coming into a local bank?

  8. I am getting ready to retire to Jomtien in the next few months and am qualified to get a retirement visa. Has anybody tried to get one here in the US or is it best to get it once I arrive in Jomtien? I wasgoing to come over on a 60 day tourist visa and get my visa there, but I had trouble opening a bank acct on my last visit. The bank wanted a 1 yr. visa....no tourist visa. This was in Pattaya at the Siam Comm Bank. I like this bank as it is closest to my condo.

  9. @ taxexile:

yup, u're right, better to have a crown than an implant, I think I'll stick on that..!

And I'm a dentist phobic, but not enough to request a general anaesthesia for a root canal treatment.

But I asked for it to remove my 4 wisdom teeth (the dentist probably hammered my teeth to make them out, I really prefer to have not been there when he did that...  :o )

My dentist is France is quite good, works fast : less than 2 min of tool for my last 3 decays, in the past 5 years, and without pain; and he did good & fast job on my crown, too.

So I was still stressed to go to meet him, but "normally" stressed. Here, in foreign country, with my limited english (I have decent skill, but I don't know the dentist terms :D ), and with the eventual limited english of the dentist, it's a bit frightening...  :D

In 24 hours, I should know if I were right or wrong to worry ...  :D

No need to worry.....you will need a crown and the pain from the tooth is usually before the root canal takes place. It is an infection that is trapped in the tooth. When the dentist opens up the tooth the relief will start immediately. My father was a root canal specialist(endodontist) and taught at a major university here in the states after he retired from private practice. Just make sure that you have xrays done on a regular basis (1 a yr.) on the tooth that had the root canal so they can see if there are any problems.

  10. I'm firmly in the DON'T do it camp. My girlfriend hardly fills out an A cup and I don't care at all. I think implants are dangerous and I also HATE plastic boobs. What's the difference whether the pads are in the bra or under the skin? Why invite problems in the future for vanity sake.

I have personal experience with the procedure as my wife, now ex-wife has had the surgery and I went thru it w/her. I think the things that your friend should be thinking about is besides the amount of cc's (size) of the implant is what type of implant she will have. There were horror stories about the silicone for many yrs. and everybody went to the saline type. Now it is back to the silicone as the preferred type. I live in Newport Beach, California where breast implants are very common and are very accepted. The other thing regarding the procedure is how they will place the implant. It can be done either under or over the muscle. If she has it under, it will give the breasts a higher profile. I think that is the way to go.Once she is done, she will not even need to wear a bra at times as they will stand right up. Keep in mind that a replacement procedure, maybe about 5 years down the road is how they do it here. Hope this helps and I say go for it. It will make her feel good about herself and her husband will like it as well....as long as he doesn't mind other guys looking all the time!!

  11. Approximately 50% of appendix operations are not needed, the prior pain just being bad guts. If you don't get appendicitis in the first 35 years of life, you are unlikely to. A good test for appendicitis is lie flat on your back and attempt to bring your right knee up towards your right shoulder. If you can do it without excess pain, then it is unlikely it is appendicitis.  Fever is often present with appendicitis.

But of course to be on the safe side see a Doctor. If you live in Pattaya go to Sattahip Sirrikitt hospital: Total cost approx 7-8 thousand baht, prior to surgery request that your appendix is sent to pathology for final analysis.

    Gary,

Sounds like you a doing better. I am with you on this one, no time to worry about prices when you are doubled over in pain. I am sure your insurance company will sort it out.

  12. >>>> I saw adverts in Pattaya Mail for security companies that have 'rapid response' teams

That means when they break in and steal your stuff they will do it quickly and with top professional efficiency

Get a couple of guard dogs. That is a good option when all else fails. I have been a security consultant to many big companies and like everyone says, you can only deter them. Even with alarm systems, by the time someone decides to do something about the ringing....they are already gone. You may catch a stupid thief now and then.

  13. You should have looked before you posted.  There's an older hair transplant discussion in this same folder.

I would but I'm almost blind.

    Thanks

if your almost blind then how can you see that your hair is gone? :o

seriously, hair transplants eventually fall out leaving a scarred bald head.

i ran across a website that showed awful scars on the back of the head where

they lifted the grafts from and on top where they did scalp reductions.

many guys said if they had known what they knew now they would have never

    done the procedure.

ide go for the glued on toupe before ide let them touch me with a knife :D

I have had 3 hair transplant procedures over the last 20 yrs. I have never had a hair fall out and I have never had any scarring from the procedures. I am not sure where these guys went. I have also had friends and family have hair transplant procedures with no difficulties. My father had his 30 yrs. ago and it's still growing.

  14. I was assuming of course that a 1 year extension had been obtained using a single entry visa..

I wondered about that *after* I hit enter. :o

I want to thank everyone for their advice. My situation is that I am 52 yrs. old and will get a retirement visa in Thailand after I arrive. I do not have a thai bank account yet and will open one when I arrive in October. Some of the banks will not open an account without a 1 yr visa although I am aware that some will. I just wanted to get a visa until I have fulfilled all the retirement criteria. Any additional help is welcome and thanks again for all your insights.

    Eric

If you have any problem getting a non immigrant visa you can do the process with a normal 60 day tourist visa with the additional step of converting it in Bangkok at a cost of 2,000 baht. Many banks will open a basic passbook savings account with any type of visa these days.

Lopburi, Thank you for the help. Will i be able to convert my 60 day or if I get a non immigrant visa in Pattaya? Must I go to Bangkok as I will be residing in the Jomtien area.

    Thanks,

    Eric

  16. I have been following all the threads and have a question to ask that is open to all opinions. I am planning on moving too the Pattaya area in the next few months and was planning on retiring. I am 52 , and do alot of corporate training here in the US. I was looking into getting a Tefl certificate and teaching on a part-time basis maybe 4 hrs. a day. Is this a realisitic situation or am I heading into a mess. I will be working to keep myself busy, and enjoy helping others.....not realyy in it for the money.

    Thanks for the advice,

    Eric
