  1. I have a studio condo that has been gutted and fully renovated in Jomtien Beach Condominium. It has a full kitchen with everything in it, a western style bathroom with a stall shower and granite countertop. There is a 29" flatscreen color tv, cable installed, a DSL hookup and Index furniture. Jomtien Beach Condominium is located rite on Beach Rd. and there is 24/7 baht bus and motorbike taxis available. There are 2 huge swimming pools, 8 restaurants, laundries, internet cafes and maid service. My condos are the nicest studios in this complex for rent and I rarely have vacancies. My tenant has bought a condo in the building. Please feel free to call me for a showing. I have rented all my condos to board members and they would all be happy to give a reference if necessary. 2. Hi all

Hope someone out there can help me get my head round all this!

    Some background

I have been in LOS for nearly a year now, renting my house in UK. I have just accepted an offer to sell house and am trying to work out what to do with the cash 170K.

I plan to stay in LOS for the foreseeable future and want to recive a monthly income from the interest.(tax free if possible!) This will be my only income allthough i plan on setting up a small bussiness in LOS for my Thai GF seperate funds available for this.

I am currently banking with Nationwide using my UK address that I am selling.

I do have another address i can use for corespondance in UK, my parents.

I understand i qualify for non-resident status is i plan to be outside UK for 330 days per tax year.

Have looked at both onshore and offshore accounts and interest rates seem to be much the same 6.5-6.6% fixed for 1 year paid monthly.

    My questions are

    1) Onshore I fill out form R85 interest is paid gross use my parents UK address. Interest paid monthly to my Nationwide account I will be drawing from ATM as i do now. This looks the most simple to set up but will I still be liable for Tax on savings income?

    2) offshore looks a bit more complicated i think i can still self cert tax exempt as Thailand not in EU but to be tax free do i need to pay interest into an offshore current account and draw from there or can i pay into my UK Nationwide account. Again i will be drawing the money via ATM in LOS.

    3) If i go offshore do i have to oppen an account with my Thai address or can i use my UK address and still be non resident in UK. I think i would struggle to provide proof of address in LOS as i am renting in serviced appartments so no bills ect to provide proof of recidence.

Is there is anyone from UK with experience of this with any advice????

I am a US citizen living in thailand and kind of in the same boat as you...where can you get 6.5% interest?

  3. I did write to DBS and yes, they require an existing DBS customer to sponser you if you want to open an account as a non resident. So not really sure where to look now.

Did you tell them that you were willing to put 250 000 USD ?

    My point : "premier banking".

Then the rules... ease... by magic. :o

    Otherwise : OCBC.

They have premier banking. I think it's 200 000 SDG (minimum).

Last point : check if your US citizenship is not a problem for them.

    Thanks CC,

I didnt tell them the amount...I did send an email to OCBC but no reply...will call both tomorrow

  4. You will still have to file a tax return, report the income, and pay tax, even on the income from offshore sources, but if you think Asian economies are more inherently stable then the US, go for it.

    TH

Point well taken....I dont think that the Asian economies are more stable, maybe some are, but I think that having the capability to spread out into different currencies now, with some higher interest rates than available in the US and then maybe in the future jumping back into the US dollar might be a good track for me at this point. I did speak to my CPA in the states in regards to the tax situation, so I am aware of the laws regarding offshore accounts held by americans.

  5. I have to ask, why do you want to pull $250K out of the US and dollars now? If it is to avoid any IRS scrutiny, remember you have report any foreign account with over $10k each year. Also, seems to me not exactly the best time to convert all your USD when it as at all time low. Just keeping pulling whatever USD you need to live on now, and hope the dollar goes back up.

    TH

I am not concerned about the IRS. I no longer reside in the US and more important, I feel the road ahead for americans is going to be very rocky. I base this on what I think will be the residual effects of the sub prime issues. I think that all the states and municipalities will really feel the crunch as their survival is based mostly on the collection of property taxes from homeowners. With alot of mortgage failures, this will be affected in the future. So I just feel uncomfortable having my money in the states right now. Part of my 250k is in a stock fund and the 150 up...250 down...120 up...days are just boring me and I will look into other currencies with some decent interest rates.

  6. ok, this is a definitive answer for a non-resident openning a bank account with DBS. what you need is a passport and an existing DBS customer who is a PR or singapore resident. basically they are recommending you to open an account. once you got the paper work, you can open an account on the same day and issue with an ATM card

This was given to me by a TV bm who directed me to a singapore expat forum....I just want to know if I can fly to Singapore and go to DBS to open an account as a non resident....Where is the branch in Singapore and has anybody gone there recently to open an account...............Thanks

  7. I am not 100% sure about this but you can check......

I know that HSBC where I have an account said I can link a account to any other branch of HSBC if I have a premier account anywhere with them.

    Premier = over 100k account.

So for instance I can open a premier in US then open another in Thailand or Singapore with out being there because I have the premier US account already.

If that is true then you could open one at Thailand branch & link a Singapore branch account? Perhaps?

They also said you only need 100k total between linked accounts meaning after opening you can divert almost all to the other linked accounts if you like.

I do know as others have said before that when I call any Singapore bank about opening an account they say I need to physically go there. Some even require a intro letter from a Singapore national

I did go to HSBC in Bangkok and you are correct. I just didnt see any reason to put 3 million baht(minimun for premier acct.) just to have the privelage of opening an offshore acct with them. Their premier program didnt really fit my needs...more for a guy who travels all over the world and needs a worldwide banking resource.

  8. I have read many of the posts about HSBC and DBS offshore accounts and am still confused. I have been living in Thailand for 3 yrs. and plan to stay here forever. I come from the US and hold a US passport. I currently have about 250k in a brokerage account in the states and want to pull all of my money out of the US. I am looking for a bank where I can get good interest rates on timed deposits and one that offers a mix of currency options. I have heard about the Singapore banks but I am not sure if I need to go to Singapore to open an account. I have read here, DBS offers better rates that HSBC, so that being said, where do I go and what do I need, to open an account. I have a thai account at Siam Comm Bank and was planning to wire transfer monies, as needed from my DBS account and have a credit and atm card if possible, but not necessary. So, if someone can share with me the process that is required to get an offshore account set up in Singapore, that would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Eric

  9. I have been thru both types of eyelid sugery and would recommend the type of surgery where the incision is on the outside of the eye. The other type of surgery is where they go into your lower lids and suck the fat out. This can leave you with what they call a "sallow" or caved in look yrs later. I think by taking out the fat(bags) in your lower lids, and then a little tuck...you will be more satisfied with the results.

The best type of Dr. to perform this procedure would be an opthamologist with a fellowship in Occular Plastic Surgery. This is an M.D who has gone for special training in eyelid surgery, and does lower, upper lids and tear ducts. All of the plastic surgeons do eyelids, but you will find that most of the good ones are known for 1 speciality like noses, breasts or face lifts. You can look at all the major hospitals as well as Rutnin Eye Hospital for a good surgeon, and have no less than 3 opinions before going thru with it. I had my surgery in Los Angeles so I cant be of much help here.....good luck and feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

  10. May you guys who complaining about the Language forget one thing: this is Thailand and the official Language is Thai while English is just one of the foreign languages after Thai, Chinese (Mandarin) and others!

If your home language isn't English, you expect that all Movies, which are not produced in you Home Country, are showed in the native language of that Country where the movie was produced?

    Think about it before complaining.

    Cheers.

    Has anyone actually complained yet??????

I was in BKK last week and saw it at the Emporium in English. Cant understand why it isnt in English here

  11. The business model for CalWow is exactly the same as 24 hr fitness in the US. If you search into the company profiles, you will find Mark Mastrov listed. He started 24 hr fitness in the US and grew it to the largest gym operation. He sold it a few years ago to a large investment banking firm for a huge amount of money.

  12. I am glad you got your prob sorted out.In the future. I can highly recommend Rutnin Eye Hospital in Bangkok. If you go to rutnin.com you can get a feel for the scope of work they do there. I wouldnt trust any other place with my eyes.

  13. I took my Nuovo to the seat shop on Soi Chayapruk today....right across from the sports stadium........The guy was great....got a brand new seat for 200 baht and he did it while I waited in about 10 minutes. Thanks for the recommendation

  14. I have a friend who is 37 yrs. old, has a residence in Las Vegas and also rents a condo here in Pattaya. He is trying to get a visa so he can remain in Thailand for 1 year. He is aware he will have to make visa runs every 90 days. He will be back in the USA in July and would like to acquire a 1 yr Visa. Any suggestions on how he would apply and where. This is a great forum and all the great information you make available has been a great asset to all of us...........Thank You

  15. I think the best dermatologist around is Dr. Natapat....She is the owner of Apex Profound Beauty. Although she makes her money doing laser treatments and botox etc....she has excellent credentials and has degrees from the finest medical schools in the U.S. Her english is perfect and I am sure she can help you solve your skin problems. She has many clinics in BKK and is also here in Pattaya at Royal Garden about once a month........her number is 038-710-043...www.apexprofoundbeauty.com

She is also on the staff at Bumrungrad in BKK and you will find it difficult to find a dermatologist with her type of backround here in Thailand
