  1. I know Thai's hold there elders in very high regard but what if the elder is wrong?

What does it take for someone to point out bad behavior? Or what does it take to call them out?

Of course having respect is a good thing most of the time but how far does that respect go?

Can a elder just lay around all day never do anything drink be rude and no one stops this?

In America we believe respect is earned and not just given. We put a high value on accomplishments.

If someone is old but a loser we don't give them much respect.

  2. I'm from America and if I had to describe how to be cool in my country I would sum it up like this.

    Being a "cool" person is.

    1. Being financially independent from your parents.

    2. Being confident about yourself and your abilities.

    3. Being a real person that tells it like it is and doesn't lie.

    4. Having a cool car or motorcycle with a hot girlfriend.

    5. Not being needy and asking for anything like money or attention.

    6. Not caring what others think about you.

What is considered to be "cool" behavior for Thai men in Thailand?

  3. So I seem to get this a lot.

You go to a mom and pop shop and pay with a 1000 baht note and no one has enough change to take it.

Yesterday I bought 323 baht worth of stuff gave the lady a 1000 baht note but she couldn't take my money because she didn't have enough change.

I just don't get this if you are operating a shop why don't you come prepared with change?

Its not like I tried to buy something for 20 baht with 1000 baht.

If you have enough money to own a shop you should have enough money to have baht in small denominations.

  4. So I was thinking about this the other day will Thailand ever be like countries in the west?

In 30 years will there be real traffic laws that are enforced?

Will there be power lines that aren't a total tangled mess?

    Will the potholes be fixed?

Basically will the infrastructure be what it is in America or Europe?

Do you believe that will happened and if so how long?

  5. The things that kills older farangs with learning Thai is the pronunciation. I've met very few farangs who can pronounce Thai correctly, i.e. their Thai is not "clear."

You have to hold your mouth and tongue a certain way for some words, and only a one-on-one Thai teacher can show you how to do that and check to see that you are doing it right. The sounds that are required are not part of our normal way of speaking.

It's very hard to judge how good your own Thai is, as your Thai "friends" and acquaintances will tell you you speak good Thai, buttering you up for some money. I know people who have memorized many words and put them together correctly, but their pronunciation is so bad, it's gibberish. They will say to me, "oh, yeah, I don't always get the tones right" as if it's no big deal.

A good one on one teacher with constant practice and repetition is the only way to go, IMHO.

I think finishing with Thai school is a better idea than starting with Thai school. First learn on your own get the vocabulary down and then you can go to school after years of speaking to get everything down perfect if you must.

  6. I see some Farang woman in Thailand every once in a while.

As we pass each other walking I say hi as just a nice gesture because we are two foreigners in Thailand.

I get a cold look back or no response at all? Why is that? Are you too good to say hi back?

I find that white woman think if they come to Thailand they are better then us men but if a man comes to Thailand he is just a trashy sex tourist.

Why is there this attitude? At the end of the day who cares just curious.

  7. The difference between you and those stupid farangs is that when they speak others understand, while when you speak, you the only one who understandsthumbsup.gif

Hang on, are you saying if you don't take Thai language class, no one will understand??

Surely you don't mean that cause that would be ridiculous.

You can learn by taking lessons but also from self study. I feel that taking lessons is like having a personal trainer for weight lifting.

You don't need a personal trainer to get in shape but more for motivation lazy people take lessons because they are not able to be self motivated.

  8. Totally immersing yourself in the language is the best way to learn.

Don't hang out in tourist areas where the locals can speak English go somewhere were no English is spoken it will force you to learn Thai.

I find that many Farang go to Thai school then go out and speak English to the locals in Bangkok or Pattaya.

Force yourself to speak Thai in almost every situation.

I am just turned off by the way schools spend too much time on writing the same way music teachers spend too much time with reading music it is not necessary to speak or to play a instrument.

The Beatles couldn't read music and turned out to be a pretty decent band.

    not even close Jr.

    In your opinion?

I know many Farang that have taken Thai lessons for the same length of time that I have been staying in Thailand. I speak better than them that is a fact! I am not perfect with everything but do know more than most.

  10. Ok so here's my thing I have lived here in Thailand for 4 years and I see many Farang that take Thai language classes.

They study for many years and I seem to know far more then them with no formal training at all.

Sure they might be able to write Thai a little better but when it comes down to actual speaking to the locals there Thai language skills are pathetic.

I am not a genius with languages I just find that self study and talking with the locals is far more effective then shelling out loads of money to learn Thai.

This is not only with Thai language lessons I taught myself to play the guitar and piano with no formal training and see others paying lots of money to music teachers with minimal results.

I guess you can get a visa out of it but other than that just teach yourself its better than paying loads of money to learn nothing.

How is it possible that some people can study Thai for 5 years or more and know so little?

  11. Even though you are in denial, it is clear you are a serial "tyre-kicker" or the real estate equivalent. You kid yourself that you are "in the market for a beach condo" but what you are really in the market for is being treated like a special customer, flattered, driven around for private viewings of 10 million Baht condos.

The thing is, these salespeople are experienced and they know, they can smell a time-waster a mile off, the second you walked through the door they knew you would take up half their morning and would not part with a penny.

I guess you haven't bought your beach condo yet.

Your right sales staff can do no wrong everything is my fault.
