1. credit cards main purpose is to buy a product in the case of you are out of cash and or to pay by financing up to 12 months and so on. i see no logic to get a card in this country. Even in our home country they do many tricks to rip us off. Also when you have problem, you will have to solve it in thai english and good luck for all of u in communication. if you can get a sub credit card under your wife name etc its ok but to go for it alone its risky. every bank and their provedure, sale strategy etc may differ. it dorsnt mean every bank will rip you off by life insurance sell. if you are asked to deposit a fixed amount for credit card, whats the different from debit card?
I have Amex Thailand, also Visa and MasterCard from Bangkok Bank. No issue to use these credit cards around the world.
I had 2 frauds with American Express since i have it (I think since 2002).
The first happened while i was in Thailand. Amex called me and asked about several payments done in Bangkok in various Golf accessories shops. As I am not playing golf, they found these payments unusual. So they called me. I explained that i was not in Bangkok during that period but in Phuket. They asked me if could provide some evidences that i was in Phuket, which i did. They asked to cut in 2 my card, scan it and send the scan to them. 24 hours later I recieved a new card and none of these fraudulent payments were charge to me.
The second time: I went to Nigeria for business. As Nigeria is unsecured, i left my credit cards in a safe box in my hotel during my stay there. Once i was back to Thailand, i saw a payment of 9,500 usd on my monthly bill. I called Amex and explained that it was impossible. The payment was indeed done in Nigeria. Amex explained me that i might have unintensionaly left a payment receipt on a table or in garbige and they probably copied the credit card number and my signature. They blocked the card and sent me a new one 24h later.
I find the credit customer services ( both Amex or Bangkok Bank) very efficient, they have operators speaking clear english and very professional.
When i am doing an unusual payment (larger amount than usual), either with Amex or Bangkok Bank credit card, they are calling me immediately while i am still in the shop to verify before authorizing the payment.

2. I have "real" credit cards with AmEx, Citi and SCB, very sensible credit limits too (and the Citi MasterCard works in Makro).

Of course I have a long term work-permit and a very decent salary.

For our OP, a serious look at SCB is suggested.

Yes, me too. I have "real" with Amex Thailand, Bangkok Bank Visa and Master Card.
My Amex Gold has no limit as per Amex as long as I pay the bill on time. It happened to me to have up to 500,000b bill in a month. I was offered few year ago by Amex Thailand to get the Amex Platinum but I declined
My Bangkok Bank Visa Platinum and MasterCard (Air Asia) have each 80,000b credit limit.
None of my credit cards have any secured funds blocked by the bank in a separate deposit account.
I am not working in Thailand. I am on Non O 1 year visa (based on child) but of course I have good incomes and believe good credit history.

3. I have a pospaid AIS registered in my name years now as I live in Thailand. I have a Myanmar Simcard as I am working in Myanmar. Both cards work perfectly in both country (and any other countries) with their respected roaming. However, my phone (dual sim) is set on roaming data disable to avoid extra cost. So whenever i am in Thailand, my Myanmar simcard is able to receive calls, sms and keep any applications (Line, Whatsapp, viber, messenger...) online using either the mobile data from my Thai sim or wifi whenever available. It work the same when i am in Myanmar for my Thai sim.

4. I think it really depend on what you are expecting about nightlife.
I have been based in Thailand for about 25 years and been travelling a lot around the world and of course SE Asia. I also feel the same that it is difficult to find similar nightlife than Thailand ( i leave in Phuket)
I have been working now 5 years in Myanmar all around Myanmar and based professionally in Yangon for nearly one and half year.
Myanmar is not a country where you go because of it nighlife. However, due to opening of the country and business opportunities, the expat community is getting bigger and bigger and so more and more nightlife in Yangon. But again nothing to compare to Thailand and others neighbors countries.
With all my years been in Thailand, i did enjoy a lot nightlife in Bangkok, Pattaya, Samui, Patong beach...when I was younger ( I am 49 now) but this over for me now. Living in Phuket, i am not going to Patong anymore now. Last when i went there was about 4 years ago. So Yangon nightlife suit me as it is not intense as it is in Thailand and I rather go spend my weekends in Bangkok if i want to go for nightlife as it is just an hour flight from Yangon. Basically because of more variety in Bangkok than Yangon.
I believe that at the moment, the highlighted spot in Yangon for nightlife are around Myanmar Plaza (Fuse, Eclipse...next to Hard Rock Cafe), Sedona Hotel, The Penthouse, some reputated bars in the town (such as 7 joints...) and of course locals discos and places which i won't mention the names.

5.
I ordered the i7 model at IT City in Pattaya (Tukcom) on Friday, and they called today to say it was here for pickup.  I plan to get it tomorrow.  I also got an SP4 cover -- the one with the fingerprint reader.  Never used one on a computer, but I really like using it on my phone, so thought I'd give it a try.  The new keyboard/covers don't have a fingerprint reader, which I thought was an odd step back.

I doubt this will work, but they said that when I make final payment (I put 20% down) to ask for the VAT refund form to get the 7% VAT refunded at the airport.  I have a one-year retirement extension and am pretty sure the refund is only for folks on Tourist Visa or visa-exempt entry, but I'll see how it goes.  That would be a nice little bonus, if it works.

VAT refund worked for me. I am on Non O 1 year multi entry (based on Thai child). I came back to Myanmar today where I am working and got the VAT refund at the airport. I got back 5,700b (Surface Pro I7 500gb).
As for the cover, actually for me, my wife has my Surface Pro 3 with black cover but she want a blue cover. For me, for my new Surface, I want a red cover. There was blue cover in stock but no red. So i bought the blue cover for my wife and took her black cover until i find a red one...

6. jphasia:  Thanks for checking and verifying the 15-August date.  Apparently the "Like" button has been removed from the forum software, or I would have simply "liked" your post.

To give you an update, as I was in Bangkok this week end, i bought the new surface Pro.
It was more complicated than expected. Despite telling me last month that all models will be available on 15 August, i had to try many shops in Bangkok before finding what i was looking for. I was interested about the I7 model. All shops have only few I5 in stock and no accessories at all. I finally found one I7 in Emporium and I bought a SP4 cover and separate mouse.

7. If i understand correctly, the down side of the MTD account is that are charging 50b per ATM transaction. Not a big deal for me as i only deposit money and never used the ATM card.
Also, i understand that the maximum transfer amount is 50k per transaction (i saw that on their internet banking)
The questions are: is there any limit when withdraw at the bank and is there any fees such as the 50b when withdraw at the bank?

8. Yeap, with Bt2M in the account earning 1.3% that means you will earning approx Bt26K interest/year or appox Bt2,166/mo which means after approx 10 months they will then start tapping you for tax.  It would probably be in Nov or Dec they start tapping the 15%, and may go back to apply back tax also.

At the current 1.3% interest and assuming you just don't want to be hit with the 15% withholding tax and don't want to be bothered to file for a refund, then approx Bt1.53M would be the most you want to keep in the account month to month if you monitor the balance religiously and promptly withdraw the interest earned monthly to keep the balance at Bt1.53M.   With a balance of Bt1.53M that works out to annual interest of Bt19,890....really close to that Bt20K tax trigger point.....little too close for me.

Now I said a little to close to me because although for around 4 years I had some fixed savings accounts at Bangkok Bank and got hit with the 15% withholding tax "and also applied for the refund each year" with no problems....always got the refund from the govt in X-weeks, at this point in time I'm in the frame of mind I just don't want to play the Thai tax system game.  Instead I'll just play my home country tax system game by keeping the great bulk of my savings in my home country financial systems even though they are paying less bank interest and Thai bank interest.   To each his own.

As said if not wanting to play the tax refund game I would pick a little lower balance, maybe around Bt1.3M to Bt1.4M to where you didn't have to be withdrawing funds each and every month to keep the balance below the tax withholding trigger level.

A Bt1.3M balance would earn you Bt16,900 interest per year....good breathing room below the over Bt20K interest earned trigger point.  Now if you go with say a Bt1.4M balance that works out to Bt18,200 interest/per year...still some breathing room but keep in mind if you don't want to withdrawal some funds frequently during the year, that interest you are earning monthly is increasing your balance which means the next month's interest will be a little more than last months.   Don't let the over Bt20K point sneak upon you if you primarily just let the balance set and earn interest versus doing some withdrawals to keep below a certain balance you don't want to exceed for whatever reason....like maybe a 15% tax withholding trigger reason.

Thanks for this clear explanation. Yes i just don't want to bother with tax refund.
I will take out cash from account and leave about 1.3M.
I might check for a fixed deposit account to deposit the excess 700k and eventually add little more.
The thing is that I like the MTD account system as the fund can be withdraw anytime. Even if i have no plan to withdraw the fund or use it, i found it good to have it getting 1.3% interest instead of nothing in my others saving accounts

9. why put 2million into an account that only pays 1.3%.when there is plenty of 1.8%fixed for 1yr. giving you 36,000bht.before tax.
which is 5,400bht.but you get that back.
if you are useing your acc.like large amounts going in,then simular going out it makes sense.if not you are throwing away
10,000bht.
as i previous posted you can earn 190,000bht.interest or other before you have to pay tax.[refundable].
Thanks. I never really checked about that. I will. I guess you are talking about fixed deposit account.

10. I am considering to replace one of my TV 55" samsung.

Not sure exactly which model it is but:

55"

Samsung

UHD

4k

About 4 years old.

I am looking at similar specs (latest specs) but not necessary Samsung. Looking at 55".

Any recommendations about the brand? Samsung, LG, Sony...

Budget is not an issue but of course would consider price vs quality / standard

Thanks

11. As far as i know, motorbikes are not allowed on highway. I am not riding bikes in Myanmar so I am not 100% sure of that.

What I am sure is when I was based in Mandalay for 3 years (I am based in Yangon since 1 year), i was doing often Mandalay- Nay Py Taw by car through the highway and saw motorbikes stopped by the police. When I asked my driver what was the problem, he told me that the motorbikes was not allowed on the highway.

Indeed, i never saw much motorbikes on the highway. This was mostly between the first toll gate from Mandalay and the toll gate at Mandalay airport.

12. I am in Bangkok today. Went to IT city and Banana IT in Paragon but not much information from them (they were not looking motivated...)
However, went to IT section of Paragon (I think it's Central where they sell all about computers, TV's, camera's...). There is stand Windows. They confirmed that the new surface Pro will be available from 15 August and they will have all models available.

13. I see on the website of IT center that it will available on 15 August.
I bought a Surface Pro 3 i7 few years ago in IT center Bangkok and really like it. My wife tried it just a month after i bought and never gave it back me as she like it very much. Never had any problem with it and my wife still use it intensively.
I was planning to buy the Pro 4 for myself but didn't.
I will buy the new Pro in IT center if it is available next month

14.
My MediaPad sent me a notice that there was an upgrade available. I accepted and it was a huge download. I now have Android 7. Android 7 is a bit different and I think I liked Android 6 better. I guess I'll get used to Android 7. I still use the Apex launcher. The upgrade was flawless and everything on the tablet stayed the same, nothing lost and nothing added.

I have been using Android 7 for quite some time now on my Samsung Note 5.

15. I have been long with Samsung. I still have a Samsung Note 5 and an Iphone 6 plus (need 2 phones).
I saw last week in Huawei shop the last P10 plus. Nice and interesting, especially the camera. I am considering to go for it (will replace my iphone).
However, reading some reviews on the net, i don't see much good comments and especially repetitive comment about software issues.
Do you have any comment on that as Huawei user? Also comparing to Samsung.

Thanks

17. A rule is a rule, when flying.

Please no offence, but it is really annoying when people who are aware [or] of international passenger regulations start to argue at check in and delay everybody...

Sure one needs to understand, but please, do your learning beforehand and elsewhere then at the airport counter at check-in that delays all fellow passengers!!

Well, i agree with you but please take note we are not arguing. As stated in my first post, a rule is a rule and no argue on that. Yes we messed up as my wife missed that her passport has 5 and half month validity left only. But when the airline staff informed us about this problem, we were ready to accept that she has to postpone her trip today to get a new passport prior to come back to Myanmar. We just highlighted to the airline staff that she entered and exit Myanmar 2 weeks ago (so she was already within the 6 months validity left) and neither the airline or the immigration in Myanmar mentioned anything that time. Also that she had return ticket booked for her return to Thailand in 10 days. The airline asked us to acknowledge the risk of being denied in Yangon and eventual charges by both immigration and airline, which we accepted.
If they would have denied my wife to check-in again after after discussion, no big deal, she would have reschedule her trip today and I would have fly alone.

We did not delayed anyone because first we are travelling on premium or business only and using the respected business check in counter which is usually not crowded and gladly they were nobody behind us. Also we came for check-in very early as we had plan to have lunch at the airport.
We are both travelling a lot. Myself actually flew from Yangon to Bangkok yesterday evening and back to Yangon this afternoon with my wife.
As I mentioned in my first post, we are not complaining about this situation. Just failing to understand this rule.

18. Good !

Cannot help but believe your wife was fortunate/lucky !

Thanks for remembering to report back --- appreciated.

Yes, agreed. She is here for 10 days. As soon as she is back in Thailand, she will go get a new passport she is travelling often to Myanmar. Basically 2 weeks in Myanmar, 2 weeks in Thailand and so on...
