As someone who has called the tourist police for help I can assure you, they do nothing for us. After calling time and again and no one answering I finally got someone who spoke broken English. They told me to call the normal police and then hung up on me.
We all know how effective and ethical the normal police are, right?

You can't make this <deleted> up[emoji23]

Are they sure it was a 19 year old Thai male perp? I hear there were Burmese migrant workers in the area. Might want to follow up on that lead....

Too bad. Poor guy. Should've changed his t-shirt for 100bt

A good start would be determining the conclusion of a murder investigation AFTER the investigation is conducted as opposed to beforehand. That ostensibly small detail in process would amount to a big bump in public confidence, imho. The real problem for Thailand lies not in the fact that tourists die on Thai soil - they die in other countries, too - but in how we address those incidents. The flip-flopping on the Koh Tao murders - confessions and retractions, authorities reaching out for international help then rejecting international help, and the inability to solve a crime committed in a tiny community - raises serious doubts about the capacity of the state to carry out one its most basic duties: enforcing law and order.

I can't wait to try Uber in Bangkok. Granted there are some decent folks just trying to make an honest living by driving a cab in Thailand, but I have to say that the vast majority of taxi drivers I've encountered in Bangkok have been lazy crooks. If raising the prices would result in taxis actually taking people to where they want to go when they want to go there, I'd be all for it. It'll be nice to have an alternative, if the Uber thing eventually works out.

Trying to silence social media speech is a little like playing a game of whack-a-mole.... if there were millions of moles that is.

I'm always surprised by the number of foreigners who complain about all things Thai, seek out friends and environments that are decidedly farang - yet continue to do visa runs and such to stay in the country

I've got a company needing to fedex me some documents from overseas, and then I've got to return them. Has anyone had any experience with fedex vs DHL in Bangkok? I've used fedex for sending packages before without issue, but in general it seems like DHL is the more prevalent shipping company in Bangkok. Any advice based on actual experience is greatly appreciated.

And your observation is Pulitzer material.

I am pretty sure most of them speak English better than you speaking Thai language.Wow, you Thai taxi drivers sure have proficient English writing skills[emoji23]
I don't dispute that one bit.

So a real army Captain would have been above the law??
Silly me!!
Exactly. Such is the bendable rules of law in Thailand

5 baht says Sviss Geez is both poor and homely.
Thanks to the OP for the story, it's nice to hear of things involving Thai immigration turning out well in the end. I hope you guys had a great visit with great grandmum!
PS- IF I were to be detained at BKK I would hope to be locked up in a room with the attractive immigration supervisor you wrote of [emoji6]

OP is out of date, Ubers been in Bangkok all 2014,trying to get the 200 baht credit? fact is Uber can prove very expensive. I took a 3km trip in one of their cars, it cost 110 baht, the actual trip was 45 baht but the "call up" charge was 50 baht and 15baht for an item called "time" on the bill. Stick to regular hailing Bangkok Taxis.
Yeah, use my referral code instead of the OP's[emoji2]: r9ijj
But seriously, BKK regular taxis are the worst in the world. I'd happily pay more, double, triple, whatever.... rather than playing the game of "will you take me here?" I hope Uber disrupts the shit out of the taxi business in Thailand. They deserve it.

Whatever it takes so that taxis don't routinely refuse to take paying customers or try to charge them through the nose off-meter in BKK. As much as I love the city it has one of the worst behaving populations of taxis.

It varies by bank and branch, but any SCB won't let you.

The fact that this guy believed them says volumes about the real police in Thailand
-
It's not necessarily a bad thing for tourism to be down in Thailand.
-
.... meanwhile somewhere the real murderers are quaking in their booties, rooting for the Thai police to extend this charade.

My survival plan in Thailand, whether there's an apocalypse or not, is being Asian.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is the 500K an annual fee? Every five years? One time? If the latter are there any recurring costs?

Easy to open, easy to get milked by the bank where you put your USD

Thank you for the eyewitness report,

Police coy over new probe into Koh Tao murders
in Thailand News Headlines
Posted
I'm probably not alone when I say, as a foreigner who loves many aspects of Thailand, that I am MUCH more put off by a potential government-run cover up than I would be of a convicted murderer brought to justice who also happens to be Thai.
I think the authorities place way too much weight on the hypothetical damage to tourism resulting from a Thai national being ultimately found guilty as the culprit behind the grisly murders on Koh Tao.
Murder unfortunately happens in most if not all societies. It is something I think westerners accept as reality. That said, tourists would feel much safer and assured knowing that there is an honorable and effective system of law enforcement and justice in place, to deal with those ugly realities when they arise.
Unfortunately, regardless of the outcome of this case, and even if the real murderer is brought to justice- corruption and ineptitude are the things people will take away from this story.
It's a damn shame; the families of the victims, the Burmese workers, and Thailand itself deserve better than this.
