The objectives of this study are to determine the level of utilisation of a community forest by the residents of "Bâan dtà-làat kêe lèk" Village 1, Tambol Mâe Pòhng, Amphur Doi Saket, Chiangmai Province in terms of technology, economy, natural resources, psychological and social aspects and to study the obstacles that cause the community to not utilise the forest to the fullest.

Results of the study showed that overall there was moderate utilization of the forest by the community, with the greatest utilization in the psychological and natural resources aspects, followed by social aspects. The economic aspect was the least utilized. The greatest obstacle in efficiently utilizing the forest was the lack of knowledge and understanding of the resources available, so the community was not able to efficiently extract the resources that were there. It was also found that the problem of forest community institution was that the committee had established many policies, but still lacked serious implementation.

Sometimes people use it sarcastically, or to emphasize a point, to mean "all the time".

Yes - it literally means 'please blame me' though it is used instead of our 'please excuse me' and so is often translated that way.

I always thought it meant: "May I be punished (for what I just did)."

khŏr tôht - ขอโทษ. I guess it's the same anyway.

How about: "sòo khŏr" - สู่ขอ - to ask for a woman's hand in marriage.

I think there should be dozens of these out there, due to the different culture. Then there's all those foods that have no direct translation, such as "glûay-bùat-chee" - กล้วยบวชชี - Bananas entering the sisterhood, or more commonly: Bananas boiled in coconut milk.

'Manzai'....which is a feeling of annoyance you feel towards someone when they have been a show off.

ฤ,ฤๅ and ฦ,ฦๅ are obsolete vowels, also called ligatures in some dictionaries, and are used to write pali and sanskrit words. So I wouldn't bother to learn how to say them.

If you're a sadist then here's the pronunciation of them:

ฤ - ริ or รึ or เรอ depending on the word. Note that this vowel/ligature is not obsolete.

ฤๅ - รือ --- I've seen this used instead of the word หรือ (or).

ฦ - ลึ

ฦๅ - ลือ

But how can something all of a sudden be "Obsolete"? I.E. Kor-Khuat, Kor-Kon and Por-Sum-Pow

Careful, don't confuse ภ with ฦ.The three with a 0% usage haven't been removed from the dictionaries.....yet.

Just use the English word. Most doctors here are familiar with the word "remission", which I don't think has a direct translation into Thai.

My small cheesy guess:

Chuang nee mareng pom yoo nai 'remit-shun' - My cancer is currently in remission.

Farang Mee Lom (ฝรั่งมีล้ม) doesn't make a whole lot of sense (grammatically). But hey, he was a tractor driver in a country village somewhere. Who knows what he said. It could've been "Farang Nee Lom" (ฝรั่งนี้ล้ม) or "this white dude fell!".

On the stapler was the brand name "MAX", apparently the most common producer of Thai staplers.

When a word is written in Thai language ,Thais have our rights to pronounce it in the Thai way.

If an Englishman pronounced the borrowed French word 'rendezvous' as 'ren-dez-vowce', instead of the correct 'ron-day-voo' then they would be laughed at and perceived as lowly educated. So why can't Thais pronounce borrowed words as they are pronounced in the original language? Are they afraid of being perceived as over-educated? Heaven forbid.

I agree that ฤ is a vowel, but since there are some words in Thai that start with this letter, and it also looks like any other consonant, others might think it should be a part of the 'list' items.

I think explanation 2 regarding ฆ is more likely, but the 'bug' is most likely due to Microsoft programmers' ignorance with the Thai alphabet.

ฟังแล้วเงง - I listened to what you've said but I've got absolutely no idea what you have been saying.

I don't think that's the reason. Missing from the list are ฃ, ฅ, ฆ and maybe ฤ. I asked my Thai colleague why they were and she could only suggest that these two letters ฃ, ฅ, never occur in Thai while ฆ only occurs in about 9 or 10 words and the first three have other letters that can be used for the sounds that the letters represent, as Richard mentioned before.

Sa Jai สะใจ

From the dictionary it means satisfied. But I've heard it a few times now and it doesn't seem to be correct given the situation. For example, if someone says or does something brave or daring then another person might say สะใจจังเลย. Any ideas?
