  1. Schadenfreude is taking joy in the misery of others; taking joy in what you think is or should be the misery of others is something I have only ever encountered on this website.

I think in the west it's also known as Gloating. Yes we often hear on this site in Thai, "Som nam na" or if someone gets ripped off: "You were stupid you deserved it" now what satisfaction does someone get out of a mindless statement like that?

Schadenfreude means something different to the example you gave.

For example we were in T-shirt stall in a market. The wife was browsing, I said how about that one, the I love my DJ t-shirt. Quick as a flash the other Thai woman there looked up and grabbed it. Held it up in front of us and her for about 30 seconds looking over it, then with the biggest smile you could imagine bought it in front of us.

Schadenfreude, makes me laugh more than anything else, what a pitiful people. :)

  2. So the OP moved here at age 25, and is now aged 57.

During which time he has learned to:

Be far more tolerant of others.

understand that the moment is everything.

    Accept certain things.

    Seeing the good in everything.

Enjoy whatever life I have, irrespective.

I would say that 100% of 57 years olds have learned all that and much more compared to when they were 25 years old.

Country has nothing to do with it.

  3. My wife told me they used to burn these drugs in public. Now they don't.

So I'm assuming they are providing a safe passage and gaining promotion (and money!) at the same time? Thats a win win.

How much were hundreds of Thais caught paying to cheat on the Police Entrance Exam last year paying again? 300,000 baht right.

    For a job that starts at 8,000 b p/m rolleyes.gif

Teachers were caught too, cheating on their entrance exams.

Don't ever forget what sort of society and people we are dealing with.

  4. In a similar vein I have put in some shelving in my tiny little mancave/workshop which involved drilling into the concrete walls.

I was just buying masonry drill bits from the local mom and pop store as I could not be bothered to trek over the brightside and they were cheap at 20b a pop but they only lasted 4 holes till they were <deleted>.

did 3 trips/walks to buy more over the course of an afternoon mumbling about the cheap crap that fails....4th trip/walk old matey says "No Hab"..... Iam like FARKKKKK I dont wanna have to go to Home Pro to buy some then he tells me he has some in the same size but are expensive (80b)........ anywho I grab 2 of them and the first one drilled more holes than the 3 other cheap cheap ones I earlier purchased and looks like it has never been used.....

    Go figure.

There's a simple saying: buy expensive, cry only once.

  5. My God, the realization that one isn't held in the highest respect or even liked very much.

    The shock.

Don't they know what you Westerners have done for us little brown people!

My God, the realization that some foreigners understand the insulting langauge some Thais are addressing them with.

Yet still they're here, paying Thais a salary to live with them. They must have very deep self-esteem issues.
