    thanks in advance

no worries thanks for these, i shall get on the case asap

what offshore work exactly? comm diving/rov/... ?I know there is a big community in singapore, or are you specifically looking for Thai based companies only?

  3. I guess its kind of silly to attempt to arrive at a specific conclusion based upon unspecific data isn't it?  Well, my interests and values are something like this:  sailing, diving, salt-water aquaria, tropical plants, Thai food, good books, and good music.  (The latter two probably should be listed first, but they work anywhere; and anyway I expect they would probably have to be BYO to Krabi.)

Yes, I have been to Krabi a couple of times, but unfortunately only briefly -- once coming in from a sailboat, and once on the road from Phuket, going south to Hat Yai.  I have been to Phuket four or five times -- I can't even remember anymore.

I guess I need also to say that this current bit of exploration isn't just my "impulse-of-the-month".  In fact, in earlier years I have lived in the tropical S. Pacific and quite thrived in that environment.  And that's what originally lured me to Phuket.

So yes, it is surely one's specific interests and values that propel one to a particular location.  (I have, BTW, been to Chiangmai and the G. Triangle area also.)  It does sound like you have made a happy choice for yourselves up there Scottie!  Please keep me/us posted on how your venture/adventure is progressing!

Can any of you year-around residents of Krabi offer any more perspectives?  (Yes, including Scottie's rainy season concern.)  As I said before, I probably really just need to come try it on, but sure would like a stronger grip first, from those of you who already live there.  BTW, can anyone tell me roughly how many expats do live in the Krabi area?

    Thanks and best regards, z

i have lived in ao nang for over a year through 2 high seasons and one low, the last high being one just past, so can not really comment on that one, and am currently now in chiang mai for the foreseeable.

in the high season i mainly concerned myself with diving and found it a great place to live, nightlife isnt too hectic which is nice at times, and if you want to find something more exciting then a trip to phuket/phi phi isnt out of the question since it isnt that far away for a weekend trip with the lads.

everyones perception of the low season is monsoons and exceptionally heavy rainfall, which isnt always the case, (no more so than in chiang mai as i have just recently experienced!), the diving in the low season is often a lot better albeit the seas swell can be larger than normal, but then as a diver you just get on with it. its all part of the fun as far as i am concerned. but you have less divers on the all the dive sites, but the range of sites can be limited due to the fact the sea swells redirect some outings to quieter more protected areas.

but yes the low season can get a bit boring if there is nothing to do, and if there is not many people around to enjoy it with.

for me personally i like phuket, but for me personally it has its place, which is to spend a bit of time and have a blow out once in a while, but i like to chill out and relax in Krabi and Ao Nang, their is a small local expat community but a friendly one, and you can usually find them in certain local watering holes, as for numbers i really wouldnt like to try guess.

  4. we were looking out to buy some furniture for our new home.  Went to some of the big stores and everything seems a little pricey.  anyone can help out here on getting some good furniture in CM?

    groo

i have exported silk products to the uk with these guys, they do product sourcing for both retail and wholsale and do source for furniture as well, they worked for me, knowlegable and friendly, maybe worth a go?

  5. Thanks guys. Yeah I heard they cut it with cheaper materials or will often substitute for cheaper Chinese silk, so not being an expert I'd rather go to the established places and have more of a chance of getting the real thing. :o

Unfortunately the missus is too polite outside the home ole mate. I'm the only one who gets to see her furious side. :D  :D

  6. You can extend your visa at the Chiang Mai immigration office for 30 days only at a cost of 1,900 baht or you can go the cheap way and cross the border at Mai Sai and when you walk back across you will get another 30 days.

I am guessing no on the drivers license as I had to show my work permit to get mine.

    :D

i applied for my driving license a few months back in chiang mai and got one with my immigrant b visa, which is the minimum, and my international license and then filled out a few forms and then crossed their palms with baht and got the license. its not possible to apply for a driving license with a tourist visa, but if you have an international license then that will suffice for your needs.

  7. Try Computer Plaza, north of Chang Puak intersection and the other Computer Plaza near the Kuangsingh intersection.

i went to the pantip plaza chiang mai and these guys seemed to know all the answers to my questions, very helpful in fact, i was looking at the canon ip5000, its about 9400, and uses 6 colours, but then i am looking at printing photos through it and it has very high resolution compared to others..

anyway sidetracked for a sec try this number his mobile number 069235471, if not they are located on the bottom floor near the escalators and this is their paper outlet and have allsorts of paper for sale to help identify it.

not sure of their english skills as i, lazy as i am, had a friend with me to help with translating the techicals etc..

    sorry could be more specific

  9. Hi,

I presume there are Beer Bars and or girlie bars at Ao Nang Beach, I expect it to be different to Patong but hoping there are a few places to find lovely Thai girls. Arriving mid May 2005 staying at La Playa.

Also is there a shared minibus between Phuket Airport and Ao Nang or Krabi?

    Thanks in advance

In Ao Nang for your girlie bit of action there is 2 main places, Centrepoint and "the soi" (which has attracted names such as the soi of temptation/disappointment/temptation) make of it what you will, you will still have a good laugh down there. In centrepoint which is located just behind the main beach road you will find your beer bars, KR bar is a good one and if dont want to get hassled to much stay for a few drinks to liven yourself up and then tour centrepoint for when you do want to be hassled!

After these places the latest opening place is luna bar, round a bit on noparathara beach, alllthe local samlor drivers know all these places so getting lost is not an option!

Ao Nang is very different from the places you might be used to, but it offers a lot to a lot of tastes, you get allsorts passing through, from your backpackers to families to your, for want of a better word... deviants! It attracts a lot of repeat custom and could do with a boost this high season after a very tight one just gone.

its a good chill out place and you can get the lively side as well if you want, a short 50baht boat to tonsai beach could see you at a fulllmoon party of their own, you got rock clmbing scuba diving, kayaking, elephant trekking, temples, wat tam seua is awesome but knackering go after 2/3 oclock in the afternoon or you will burn out!

Although yes pickings can be thin, high season the boat arrives and a fresh stock offloads, but got to be quick before the local expats taint you choice!

  10. Visited Ao Nang a couple of years ago, had some friends in a bar called LUCKY BAR, just wondering if A - The area was badly hit by the Tsunami and if it is still there?

Unlike many peoples thoughts and rumours Krabi and Ao Nang was not really directly affected by the Tsunami, after the wave happened within a few weeks the place was back to pretty much normal, the indirect affect of the Tsunami was the obvious loss of trade to both Expat and Thai companies alike, in the middle of the "high" season, which has lead to a somewhat elongated "low season".

Lucky Bar is still alive and kicking down the soi of disappointment, I am revisiting Ao Nang in the next few days, I shall send them your regards and have a set or 2 in your absense!

    How is ol' blightly anyway?

  11. :o  This will be my first visit to Thailand. I was planning to go rock climbing in Krabi. Is this still happening? I would also like to volunteer to help rebuild.  Is it easy to find accomodations in Krabi (cheap)? I am just wondering what it will be like when I get there. You can imagine all the questions I have!

Thanks for any advice and information about travelling alone, rock climbing, eating, sleeping, getting from Bangkok to Krabi etc, etc.

    Cheers!

Unlike many peoples thoughts and rumours Krabi was not really directly affected by the Tsunami, after the wave happened within a few weeks the place was back to pretty much normal, the indirect affect of the Tsunami was the obvious loss of trade to both Expat and Thai companies alike, in the middle of the "high" season, which has lead to a somewhat elongated "low season".

With regards to rebuilding then Krabi has no need for this at all, the place that did need it was Khao Lak, but unsure of the situation there now.

To get to Krabi from BKK I think at the moment the only airline flying down here is Thai Airways and flights will cost you around 2500-3000 baht and then a taxi into Krabi or Ao Nang is about 500 baht.

For rock climbing your real destination for at least some of your stay will have to be Railay or Tonsai Beach where all the real climbers hang out. You can get to these places by long tail from Ao Nang which is the main tourist area in the Krabi town area. You can get a ride into Ao Nang from Krabi town for around 50 baht and are readily available. Once in Ao Nang you get a longtail boat for around 50 baht, last time i checked, and accomodation is available on both beaches. Or you can indeed get a boat from Krabi town as well.

But all intents and purposes the hard core part of the rock climber population generally stay on Tonsai, but you can easily stay in Ao Nang and get the boat over to climb everyday, as it takes less than an hour.

As for cheap accomodation you can stay in Krabi for the cheapest option, but can find accomodation in Ao Nang again price changing a lot and varying time of year, but at the moment prices ranging from sweat box 300-400 with fan to 500-600 baht with A/C upwards. If you are lookng at staying longer term than you can certainly rent some places at better rates say 6-7 thousand baht a month with aircon.

As for travelling alone, many many backpackers pass into and through Krabi all year round travelling alone will no ill affects, but its just common sense, respect the locals, the local culture, (i.e. no swanning around in bikinis on the street, covering shoulders is appreciated), and you will have a good time i am sure!

The locals are used to foreign visitors and do appreciate their business, just learn a few thai words and you will get on a better than the rest of the people passing through. Hey if you get it wrong you will at least get a laugh.. Pretty much like my thai skills as well.

I have spent a lot of time in Ao Nang and found it really enjoyable, it has a lot for everyone, diving can be excellent there as well, and the people are friendly food is sooooperb! Super spicy Southern Thai food if you want it!

Hope that helps a little, good luck!

  13. Dear Mr. Lob,

Always good to have a recommendation.  I've tried to contact Scuba Addicts twice via email, but it was returned as an invalid address.  Any suggestions?  I'll try again tomorrow.

    Matthew

    Hi Matthew

Not sure if you have tried again recently but the email appears to working now?
