  1. yes it has been good, and still have thoughts of maybe going back to real world, but then get a really think about it and the thought just sends shivers!

krabi is good as a base, and can go onto different locations quite easily for trips to make a change, phuket is only a couple of hours away, lanta is in good reach as well, both have different interests and activities.

as for diving, there is a heap of dive schools around, all about the same price, maybe take the opportunity to go to a few places and learn with different instructors is one way of doing it, then you get a nice broad range of opinions and techniques. sounds cheesy and very 'PADI', but the more you put into diving the more you get out of it, if you get bored with it, then its your own fault. as with everything got to keep it interesting.

drop us a pm when you are down, if i am still around can go for a beverage or two.

Very cool, I agree that everywhere has it's up and downs, I just noticed how much more I enjoyed life on a simple/basic level when I was there so figured I'd try living there for a while.

I'd actually like to learn how to dive etc during my time there, as a child i wanted to be an astronaut so it seems like a natural progression.

Cheers to you for following your dreams and interests instead of just being chained to an office cubicle somewhere.

just shy of 2 and a half years.

have enjoyed it a lot, am a diver, so have been immersed (forgive the pun), in that mostly...

as with everywhere in thailand, its very easy to get very comfortable where you are. you will meet people all over thailand that just come for a few weeks and end up staying a LOT longer.. everyone swears by the place that they stay in. yes ao nang/krabi has its bad sides, but then so does everywhere else.

  2. quite a few falangs around, got the diving community, quite close knit, can eb a good and a bad thing!

when are you heading down to krabi and what you got planned for your stay?

If everything goes as planned (knocks on wood) I should be moving there around the end of August. The only real plan is to enjoy life on a simple level, exploring the area, swimming, eating etc - just to unwind after years of city life :o

How long have you lived there? I can only assume that it's been a good experience if you're still there.

  4. Hi all,

I'm going to be living in the Ao Nang/ Krabi Area for a year or so and was wondering what the best options are for visa runs from there are?

    couple of options

    1) taxi to satun border cost about 2500-3000 baht

    2) get a local minivan share with other people for 700-800 baht, arranged through bernies bar leaves 8 in the morning

best option IMHO is the taxi with a total of 3 people, so cost is about the same but get a car to yourself and your friends, then you can leave at whatever time you like, best time i think is 3:30 am so can sleep all the way down there, get to the border about 8, out and in again, then can be back in Krabi area by 12/1 ish, so the whole day isnt lost.

you can also go to sidao border, but a lot busier and the satun one is a nicer ride.

  5. Am paying a visit to Chiang Mai with gf and mates, and am looking for some cool bars for a younger, more afluent crowd.

I couple of years ago, some people I'd met took me to a great bar - live band, blue lights, adjoining garden and I think I remember in my drunken haze, the walls of the mens toilets being low enough so that you could see into the garden when having a piss.  It was very nice and I think almost all locals.

Anyone know where I'm talking about?

    Cheers!!!

Sounds like the riverside, i think i remeber being able to see out through the mens there if im not mistaken, but its all a bit of haze for me too. Im back there very soon so ill check it out

yea sounds about right to me as well from hazy recollections, although more farangs go there now, but still a good mix, although standing room at the bar is minimal the bands are generally good.

there are a few bars along that road that have live music as well.

  6. Hi

I'm coming to Krabi in the middle of November. I will be doing some scuba diving, but are there any other recommendations to anything in the area I must see or do?

    Thanks

    Allan

    hot springs & crystal lagoon

    elephant trekking

a trip up to the top of wat tham seua, tiger cave, if you are feeling energetic, but make sure you go either really early in the morning or middle of the afternoon(recommended), or you will fry your @r$e off..

take a trip down to lanta for a day or two and check out the beaches

or over to phi phi, tonsai, railey to check out the nightlife

scuda diving outfit to recommend, if you havent got it sussed already, try scuba-addicts.com new team, full of enthusiasm

  7. Having only seen 2 before in my stay in Thailand, the first squashed on the road and the second i ran over on my bike whilst doing a fair rate of knots in a good direction.

Then today hearing a high pitched screeching noise, which we can only assume was its latest dinner of Sansai tastiest Frog, this one was very close to my leg and made me jump up on the nearest stool like a girl (clean pair of pants for one please!), whilst it bid a hasty retreat into the bushes with the more courageous pet dog chasing closely behind tail furiously wagging trying to get himself some snake pie.

I only got a slight glimpse of it whilst trying to save my skin from almost certain death, LOL! The body was a grey/black/bluey colour and had a thick yellow stripe running down its body, other than that I dont have much information to tell except the wifes mother is outside now trying to hunt it down and banish it from the garden.

Any ideas of what type, so we know what we have and what we can do should the mother in law get bitten in her courageous quest of snakeicide.

    Yours faithfully

    Scared of Snakes :o

  8. Someone who can design a condominium complex.

    Thanks.

not sure if its any help but the wifes sister is an architect, uses autocad etc not exactly sure as not my area, she was down in bangkok on a contract and now back in chiang mai working i believe, not sure of her english speaking abilities as she refuses to speak it with me! but i think her company has dealt with western interest before, if you get no other leads and want any details then PM me.

  9. Hi.

I am looking for some information on companys who manufacture leather suites, also looking for Dining table and chairs. Table fairly plain oval to seat 6 people and six chairs. Wuold prefer to look on the internet if they have a webb site.

    Regards

    Westie

these guys have a website, albeit only a taster of furniture on it, but they do product sourcing as well, mainly for international export but also do retail i believe, maybe they have contacts that are worth a go

    inter export services

  10. I found a baking specific store in Chiang Mai, after much hunting, and they have everything you need.

BKK undoubtedly also has such stores. Out of the way, no airconditioning and very "local" in flavor, but they had every imanginable baking tool, supply and imported products you can imagine.

Thanks for the info, do you have a company name, address or any contact details for the chiang mai based bakery store in chiang mai?

    thanks again

  11. I was wondering if anyone of you could possibly help me, I am trying to get hold of the following in small wholesale quantities, any information or supplier details would be appreciated!!!

  12. Does enybody know where the Triangle shaped Thai Pillows are made . This pillows are stuffed whit gras and are in many sizes and colours. Gess they'r made up North somewhere.

    Thanks , looking for exports

not sure if you are still after these cushions, but these guys source them out, http://www.interexportservices.com, they do regular exports, not a big operation, give it the personal touch though. i have sent silk items back to uk with them before and where always helpful and friendly to me.

    hope this helps.

these guys are a product sourcers/shipping agents, whatever you like to call them

  13. Sepoms is sold in Thailand as well.  Again, for normal prints of photos, like those from a store, using things like third-party inks is ok, but not for art prints.

The big Epson printers I'm talking about are the Stylus Pro 4000 or 4800.  These use big cartridges and can print A3 size.  They're quite a bit more expensive than the canon IP5000, so you should think about whether you're doing normal or art prints.

where can i locate these printers, i have had a look in a few shops, but as these are consumer and not pro shops they didnt have these?

also what sort of price am i looking at in thailand?

  14. Can someone in an easy way please explain what 512/256 stands for. All I know it has something to do with upload/download speed.

And where do you check what your actual speed is?

Is it in the taskmanager/performance - PF usage??

Sorry guys but I am new with connections speeds etc. :o

    Thankful for any info received.

    edh

follow this link to give a rough idea of your actual speed http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer/default.asp , run the test a few times, as the connection is not the best at times and take an average. a friend of mine has TOT ADSL and should be receiving 512 KB download speed, sometimes it drops to below 20 KBPS.

    :D

  16. I just purchased from panthip last week an epsom C65 for 2350 baht.

printing an a4 photo from a 1600x1200 pixel photo taken with a 5meg pentax produced a very nice print - I was a little suprised at how good it was.

this printer has my recommendation for a personal desktop printer - though I have yet to find out the price of new ink carts..... :o

thanks for info, for ink catridges maybe try this place in singapore www.sepoms.com.sg, dedicated ink place so might be worth a go, although not sure of what happens with sending stuff in from Singapore to here tax wise.

  17. Most pros that sell prints use Epsons, especially the wide types that print on A3.  The IP5000 is a consumer printer... it does print nice, but it doesn't have the special inks (fade resistant, consistant, matte, etc) that Epsons have.  If you're going to sell to normal folks for a small price, or are just going to be acting like a photo shop, then the Canon is OK.  If you're going to sell to rich discerning folks, you should get an Epson.

cheers for the info. which epson would you advise to, a3 is good for me as well, pros and cons. and when it comes to making the prints the ip5000 has a print res, i beleive, of 9600 x 2400, which was one of the reasons for buying it, as was told that this really affect the quality of the prints. and what about ink? obviously to refill yourself is the best way, but does the ink quality/different inks that you can buy matter a great deal?
