  1. Try www.12 flight.com Bangkok company, good sourcse of economey tickets . Flights now are a lot cheaper, from Singapore to NY, especially on short notice. I am saving alot by taking Air asia, to Singapore and then United to NY next week!

Hope that helps, and good luck.

  2. Utapao runway, was built by the USAF, in 1965, to handle B52 bombers. Wonder why it is not sinking?

    Ray

Utapao wasn't built in the middle of a swamp. :o

Gary, where from in Ohio? I am from Warren, Ohio, now living in Ayutthaya. I was on one of the flights from Singapore, that ended up sitting at Utapao. It looked like the original 1965 runway, and was handling jumbo jets ok. And to your statment..............Maybe the USAF knew better than build runways in the middle of a swamp!

  3. Being an American, I am not surprised about what can be carried in checked luggage. How else would you get your firearms and ammunition accross country or to Alaska, , to Canada, Mexico ,Peru or where ever with you.

What surprises me is the restriction on gold bullion coming into Thailand! I have always carried gold bullion with me, Just in case some one nukes Washington, and the dollar becomes worthless, while I am here. As I am leaving for the States soon , will be there 4 weeks. I will look into this, and if true, I will leave my bullion here while in the USA.

  4. Dave , What you will need to do, is have your embassy, notorize a statement, that you are free to marry. Then you will need to have this statement translated into Thai, You then take the translation, to the Thai ministry of affairs, who will authenticate the translation { more Dosh}............Annd then you take the paper work to the deputy muckity muck for the local Amphur, to register your marriage. In my case the Amphur muckity muck, informed me of an irregularity in our paperwork, and that I would have to begin the whole proccess over................er unless I paid her 3000 baht, and then we can make the correction here and today! We negotiated 500 baht, and done deal! That makes it legal. And as I said, no one seemed to be interested in what type of visa I had. Good Luck Ray

  5. I liked the new airport, as I was in and out quickly, the first 2 times through it. Third trip, I was one of the passengers, sitting at U-tapao,because of the runway closure at swampydoom.

As the airport is sinking so fast, that large portions have become unusable after only 6 months . I hate to imagine what the upcoming rainy season will bring. Unless we have a very dry year, I expect to see Suvarnabhumi, closed completly within the year.

Is it cost effective, to fix Suvarnabhumi? 100 billion baht? 200 billion baht? At what point, do the Thais, abandon the airport? I have to wonder, how will they replace the foundation, of a completed airport? Stabilize it?

  6. Runway cracks disrupt new Thai airport

Bangkok's $US4 billion new airport has about 100 cracks in its taxiways and runways which will disrupt air traffic for several weeks as damaged sections are repaired, the government and airport managers say.

Transport Minister Theera Haochareon told reporters late on Thursday that some incoming flights to Suvarnabhumi, which means Golden Land in Thai, were delayed for seven to eight hours as portions of the west runway were closed for repair work.

Four flights waited so long to land that they began to run out of fuel. They were re-routed to U-Tapao, a Vietnam War-era military airfield southeast of the capital, where they could be refuelled, Thai media reported.

The Cabinet has ordered a panel of experts to assess the extent of the problem at the airport, which is designed to handle 45 million passengers a year and which Thailand hopes will ultimately rival Hong Kong and Singapore.

Airports of Thailand board member Tortrakul Yommanak said it might take three weeks for experts to conduct their investigation.

The new airport, a pet project of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has been plagued by a series of scandals, including allegations of graft in the purchase of bomb-scanning equipment, and the awarding of taxi and parking concessions.

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont, appointed after the September 19 coup against Thaksin, said Suvarnabhumi would stay open while the temporary repair work was carried out.

"The planes can still land and take off perfectly fine. They might just have to use a different taxiway because some of them are closed for repair work," Suryuad told reporters.

Some airlines, in particular budget carriers, are urging the government to reopen the capital's Don Muang airport to ease congestion at the new site.

Granted, my Thai is somewhat limited, and often, meanings are lost in the translation. When they say the cabinat has ordered a panel of experts to assess the extent of the problem.

Does this mean that they have hired, engineering firms with expertise in this area, that is in building runways on unstable ground, to assess the problem, and reccomend a fix.

  7. Being on one of the flights from Singapore yesterday, that was diverted to Chon Buri. We were told that we were being diverted, but not why. We sat on the plane for over an hour, with the door open for air, at some point they informed us that a runway at Suvarnbhumi had beeen closed.

When we did finaly reach Suvarnbhumi, the pilot rushed off the runway, and manuvered the plane at a high rate of speed. It cannot be safe to have the pilots rushing, while on the ground. An accident waiting to happen there!

The plane stopped in a unlighted area, where we boarded buses for a ride to the terminal. The bus driver, only made one wrong turn, but was able to make a u-turn, and find the terminal, on the second attempt......................... er I believe that it is the large structure, with all the lights!

As the extra take off and landing, cannot be cost effective. I believe that the obvious solution, is to land international flights at Chon Buri, and bus the passengers to Suvarnbhumi, for immigration, baggage claim, and customs................I probably, should not give them ideas!

  8. Thursday evening, we just flew in from Singapore, with a 4:55 PM arrival time, on Air Asia. We circled BKK for a time, Then we diverted to Budapol, near Chon Buri, where we sat on the tarmack, with the plane door open for over an hour. Then airborne again, and landed at Suvarnabhumi.

We were told, that one of the runways at Suvarnbhumi was closed! Has anyone heard why they closed a runway today?

Of course, they did not tell us why we deverted, until after we were on the ground, Some wild speculation going on there! TIT. Oh yes " Sorry for the incovenience"

And I did not hear anything, as to why the runway was closed, while we were at Suvarnbhumi. TIT again.

  9. I have fingerprints by Thai police, Instructions are to send along with a certified check or money order, the FBI in the US. My question is where do I obtain a certified check or money order, payable in USD?

    Thanks Ray

    Ray

Several years back I needed such when I applied for the Residence Permit (FYI, didn't get it!!). My solution was to mail the Thai police made fingerprint chart and the letter request to the FBI back to my sister in Oregon who go the check for me at her bank, and then remailed the package to the FBI.

Absent a friend or relative in the U.S. who could do this for you, you might try CitiBank in Bangkok to see if they are able to process a US $$ check. I don't know if they can do so.

You might also ask the American Citizens Service section at the Embassy what they suggest.

    Mac

Thanks Mac. I am retired, sept 2006, also have a Thai wife, I had planed, on just using tourist visas, and 30 day entry stamps. I am now on a 30 day extention, of my first entry of a 3 entry tourist visa. Applying for a retirement visa. What a pain!

Yeah good idea, I'll call the embassy.

    TIT Ray

  10. My question is where here in Thailand can I obtain a certified check or money order, payable to the U.S Treasury, for 18 U.S. dollars? Will a Thai bank sell me a money order, payable in USD?

The instructions seem quite clear. It says that I must send the fingerprints, along with a certified check, or money order, in the amount of $18, payable to the treasury of the United States, to the FBI processing office in the USA.

  11. <wails> It ALL runs on US electricity! Can't I buy a ... a ... you know, one of those THINGS?

Yes, you can get a transformer. But they are not real desirable as they tend to be hot, take up space, unsightly, and waste energy. Check all of your electrical things to see if any can operate at 220 volts. For sure bring those, the others are possible only with a transformer.

The other note is newer places in Thailand are plug compatible with 2-3 prong US stuff. There also little inline plugs if you need to fit into older outlets.

Also keep in mind there might be a percentage duty applied on stuff you bring in so careful not to overstate the price :o

    Coder

Where can I purchase one of these transformers at?
