  1. Not another BS poll. It is amazing how all of these polls have results that are beneficial to the current regime. I'm not saying that the results are fixed but more like the questions are loaded. Where's the poll on how Thais feel about their PM threatening to punch a journalist for asking a perfectly reasonable question? Where's the poll asking the Thais how they feel about the media being censored and not being able to pass critical judgement on the Country's leadership?

  2. Why would anyone believe a single word this guy says? Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words.

He said there would be no coup, his actions said otherwise.

He said he didn't want to be Prime Minister, his actions said otherwise.

Only time will tell how true he is to his word but going by his previous record I wouldn't take anything he says at face value. All mouth and no action apart from suppressing dissent of all kinds.

  3. Hub of liver flukes.

A Thai cancer doctor told me that liver cancer is one of the three most common cancers she treats (the other two being breast and cervical) and that most was traced to the liver fluke parasites in pla ra somtam. Here's a somewhat recent NY Times story on it: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/26/world/asia/26iht-thailand.html

Never knew about this before. Thanks for the info. thumbsup.gif

    Only cooked fish for me.

Make sure your chicken and pork is cooked through as well. No pink bits! coffee1.gif

Pink bits you can get elsewhere whistling.gif

No problem with the chicken and pork being cooked. It's the Lab Nua that they eat raw that's the problem. I really enjoy it but the GF now cooks it for me and it's just as nice if not better. I don't fancy intestinal worms.

  4. Obviously the Devil put it there to fool us, or God to test our faith, or some idiot pranksters from The Community College of Arizona just to f* with those self-important pricks from Arizona State U.

    Just my theory.

    T

The good books of religion tell us that the Earth is only a few thousand years old. It must have been put there by one of the many gods to test our faith. cheesy.gif I wonder which one?

  5. When I first read the headline I thought there was no way anyone could be so stupid as to believe they could buy a rank in the army. The I remembered that this is Thailand.whistling.gif

After reading the story I find it even more unbelievable that they fell for it. If only the 2 perps would put their energy into thinking up a genuine business idea they may have done quite well. Maybe too much like hard work for them.

  6. I've got no investment advice but that 18 grand a year for 11 years and that more than enough until the old pension comes through, but if I was you I'd by a property here in England with it, live of the rental income for 11 years then sell the property which will increase in value and make more profit , this why your have more then 200000 and that with you pension fund make you a happy man In Thailand, I wish I had your 200000 grand smile.png happy days

I would agree with happydude. Like any investment the value can go up or down but at least with property you have an asset that can earn you a steady income. My house in Scotland is worth roughly the same as your nest egg and I get £650 a month in rental income. That's a bit over 30,000 THB a month at current exchange rates and enough to survive in Thailand although not extravegantly. If I decide to move back to Scotland I have somewhere to go and if not then I can sell it when I am a bit older as I have no pension.

It all depends where you live I suppose. For the price of my 3 bedroomed house with large garden in the north of Scotland, you probably couldn't buy a garden shed in London. You could probably rent out a garden shed in London for more than my house.

  7. Careful - some here dont seem to grasp that notthenation is satire. Of course, some here also dont know the meaning of that word, but that's a whole other thread in itself.

Some don't know what a real pizza should taste like and instead are happy to chuck down aberrations like 'Pizza' Company and similar, with ketchup preferably.

But of course, everybody has his own taste, but not all have good taste.

Each to their own. I don't mind the odd pizza from Pizza Hut or the likes but I am not the biggest pizza fan. Unsurprisingly the best pizza I ever had was in Italy at a restaurant in Pompei. Not a Pizza restaurant I hasten to add. I never knew pizza could be so good.

  8. Here's my two pence worth. Nothing political.

I would say that businesses in capital cities world wide benefit from additional business from many areas such as tourism, the political class that spend the week in the capital, generally higher populations with higher incomes etc etc. Surely they should take the rough with the smooth i.e. when the people want to protest on a mass scale against the government they will do so in the capital. This is what happens in Paris, London, Washington. I don't hear of other countries compensating businesses for loss of revenue after protests. If there are riots and property damage then insurance should cover that.

In those developed country there isn't any violent Thai style protest that endangers and interrupts the daily lives of hardworking people, that's ehy unfortunately this country is 4ever in a back and forth brainwashed democracy-illusion bubble babysitting cycle...

You haven't seen the aftermath of the riots in London the other year then? They started to spread all over the country. Businesses torched and looted. Plenty of protests turning violent all over the western world.

Most of the western world is living in a brainwashed democracy illusion bubble. We may vote politicians in but they are slaves to big business, the markets and bankers. Show me a democracy where the gap between the middle class and the rich, never mind the poor and the rich, is getting smaller and I will agree that there is a democracy that is working for the population as a whole.

  9. an unidentified French tourist?

How do they know he is French?

Did he shout merde? Or excusez mois s'il vous plais?

he had a prominent white flag flying and was going in the opposite direction from where the incident occurred ?

Aren't you confusing the French with Italians?

Same Same but different. Both have great wine, great food, great architecture and culture. Just don't ask them to back you up if you get in a scrap. whistling.gif

    Unbelievable!

"Phuket:- A 55-year-old German tourist was almost killed Saturday when he was knocked unconscious by a speeding jet ski."

    Unbelievable!

"The wife and witnesses told police that Heim was swimming in the sea not far from the beach while the wife was sunbathing on the beach when an unidentified French tourist sped his jet ski to hit Heim in the head and shoulder."

Did you not read the full text of the story?

  12. Tip, if the character test is client side (usually it's the case when you get a warning popup without the page 'refreshing'), there might be a workaround.

You can use several tools including HTTP Tampers on Firefox (not sure of the spelling) that will allow you to edit the data sent before the leave your computer.

If the verification is ever side, that won't help.

Sorry if this is too technical for the average TV member but for the geeks out there this can be helpful.

I have been using this for many buggy forms - especially when my email address was surprisingly considered "incorrect"

    Yep, you've lost me there.biggrin.png

  13. Military dictatorship criticises ally of democratic opposition party.

    Oh how I laughed.

Do you mean this democratic opposition?

    http://www.dailynewsegypt.com/2014/04/27/al-qaeda-chief-declares-solidarity-muslim-brotherhood-urges-followers-kidnap-westerners/

The linked article is about Ayman Al-Zawahiri and not the Muslim Brotherhood. He may talk about and support the Muslim Brotherhood but he isn't a representative of them. I am sure there would be better articles that would show why the Muslim Brotherhood were not the ideal government of Egypt in the eyes of the west.

The Muslim Brotherhood were democratically elected albeit they didn't govern in a democratic way but that is who the Egyptian public voted for. Many would argue much the same with Yingluck and the PTP. The same could be said for most democratic governments. Voted by the people but they really only look after the people at the top and pay lip service to the ordinary voter.

  14. I once watched a documentary about the Shaolin monks. Now there is a bunch of well disciplined monks if ever saw one. Apparently the older a Shaolin becomes, the less they sleep and the more they meditate and excercise so that they can keep both body and mind at full fitness.

Perhaps the Thai monks need to take a leaf out of the Shaolin book and put a bit more effort into it.

  15. Got the Thai Visa News email update this afternoon and it had a story titled "Prayut remains favourite choice as PM". So 68.7% of a massive 1,158 people in BKK think he is the man for the job if they were given the right to vote. What amused me the most was the photo that went with this story in the email. It's a lot different to the one that accompanies the story on the web site. I have attached the photo below for those that haven't seen it. It speaks volumes about the current situation and how Prayut became to be in his position as opposed to how the people polled said they would vote if given the right to.

Someone who works for TVF has a really good sense of humor. Keep up the good work.

  16. Nice to see the politicians are in agreement about something. Perhaps they can get together and see what else they agree about. They might be pleasantly surprised. Maybe they could then look at what the disagree on and try to find some common ground. Maybe they could agree to work together for the benefit of the people. Maybe they could then tell the Junta to go f*** itself and they don't need them anymore.

Who am I kidding? They are politicians. Maybe pigs will fly.

  17. "Pisan said that his “two urgent tasks” were to improve Thailand’s relationship with the United States as well as to help upgrade Bangkok’s position in the U.S. State Department’s annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report."

I would have thought that the best way to improve their position in the annual TIP report would be to improve the situation on the ground and do something to stop human trafficking. Sending a new ambassador to suck up to the US will hopefully not have the desired effect.

  18. Why can't these people find a more credible superstition to practise, like the one about the Jewish girl that got knocked up by some powerful invisible creature. I understand a lot of people pray to her son for lottery winners and many other things, like scoring a touchdown in American football. Now there's a superstition that makes sense.

I couldn't agree more. The worship of the virgin born zombie and his canabalistic vampire death cult is far more sensible.cheesy.gif

What hope has our species got? Without enlightenment not much I suspect.

  19. Print this out:

    attachicon.gifAnglo-American flag.png

Just curious, when did Brittan become part of America? Guess I was sleeping.... maybe we should give her back before they find out it's missing?

The Union Jack is not the flag of GREAT Britian is the flag of the United Kingdom(England,Scotland,Wales and Northern Ireland)

If we were to be pedantic we would call it the union flag. The union jack is supposedly only flown on the jack staff of a ship however some would dispute that. You are correct that the flag represents the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland however this doesn't help the OP find the stars & stripes he need to cheer on his fellow countryman. Both the stars & stripes and the union flag seem to be all the rage in Thai fashion so I shouldn't expect it to be too difficult to find one in BKK or Pats.

Afterthought: It must be a pain in the butt for foreigners to know what to call the UK. A lot of people talk about England meaning the UK which pi$$es off the Scots, Welsh & Northern Irish. We enter the Olympics as Great Britain and call ourselves the United Kingdom at the UN. I wish we would just settle for one name and stick with it. My vote is for Britain as we call ourselves British and not United Kingdomers. I've left out the Great in Great Britain as those days are long gone and it's high time we moved on.
