  1. I would say that it depends on where you are registered according to your Blue Thabian Baan (blue book). But as you are living in Bangkok, there would be no harm in popping down to Special Branch to confirm this. They are quite friendly and helpful.

As Tamvine notes above, it would probably be much easier to do in Bangkok, but then it would depend on whether there is a blue book for you to enter here. You cannot transfer the blue book to another place as the book is tied to the building/home not the individual. As such, you would need to transfer to someone else's blue book in BKK, unless you own a condo here, in which case you could get a book for the condo and enter that one.

FYI not all owners of buildings can be bothered to record their tenants in their blue books. A problem I faced until I bought a home in my son's name.

  2. So if I called him a liar, a defamation case against me would be thrown out, not only because it is the truth but also because it does not damage his reputation? Have I got that right.

Nothing he says in the future can be trusted - sort of fits the MP mold anyway - and so he should resign as the public can no longer have any faith in him or anything he says. By the same token, the members of the office of the Ombudsman should also resign for endorsing the right of an elected MP to lie.

I would just love a journalist to ask Kittiratt, when he next makes a public statement, whether he is lying this time too.

  3. I enjoy riding in Bangkok and have dones so few a few years now. I will probably cycle on down to Queen Sirikit Convention Center this weekend to the mobile phone expo. Get to where you want to go and get some exercise at the same time. However, like in most cities you need to be constantly aware of what is going on around you. Too much enjoying the view can end up with tears.

How don't you proposed to lock your bicycle when you are in the exhibition hall?

Sent from my LT18i using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

They now have dedicated bicycle parking, with a security guard close at hand.

You could not pay me enough money to ride a pedal bike in this country

Riding a bike in Thailand is like asking for a hospital stay or an early death

In rural areas fine and of cause good excercise. However in Bangkok i have to agree with LuckyLew who could quite easy change his name to UnluckyLew if he were to attempt mounting a bicycle in the Capital.

I think he'd get arrested if he tried to do that!!! Public indecency springs to mind.

  6. I bought mine at that little shop, now expanding, across Sukhumvit raod from Soi Udomsuk (Sukhumvit 103 BKK). There is also a Giant dealer in soi Udomsuk who may have what you are looking for. Most decent bike shops stock mirrors.

  7. Actually by keeping this project in the news she is hurting Abhisit. That senseless news about his stupid comment just will not die and he continues to get flack for it.

SO you don't think her appearance in a stained silk jacket sort of proves his point? I also remember the number of times Thatcher called certain MP's stupid idiots! So it's OK for a woman to say it but not a man?

Seriously, if she can't take the criticism then maybe she shouldn't be in politics? I am sure some think even worse they just don't articulate it!

I didn't like the jacket but I am the last person to comment on fashion. What has Maggie got to do with it? Different country and different sensibilities entirely. In the UK people can and do say much worse and people barely bat an eye. Apples and oranges.

Actually, I would say she has taken the criticism quite well. It is the media that is stirring the pot and possibly the PT spin doctors. Abhisit has been hurt by it. It is all rather childish.

I think it's starkly revealing about the self-centeredness and ethnocentric nature of the posters, that there is zilch discussion on this thread about what the host culture thinks. So many have lost the plot about what it means to be a foreign guest in a country.

You may have a resident's visa, speak Thai like a native, can make som-tam, lived here 40 years, pay taxes, have a Thai wife and 10 kids, 800,000B+ in a Thai bank, have built your own mansion that dwarfs all the locals' hovels, blah, blah, blah.....but you're still a guest any way you cut it. That's how the locals view, and will always view you. Get used to it.

It may surprise (shock?) some here to learn that Thai culture, in general, has some views and opinions about what looks proper on an adult man (Thai or foreign) out in public, aside from the beach or resort. It's as strong as the norms for what women can/can't wear at a Thai Buddhist temple. To fail in following those norms makes a bad image for all foreign guests in this country. The culturally-rooted opinions get stronger the further you get from BKK and the foreigner tourist traps. I won't bother relate those view/opinions here, as apparently no one cares--it would be casting pearls before swine.

Knowing I'm opening myself up to the vitriol of the "I don't care..." cretin crowd: "OK I will get my hat and coat (and long pants) and move on now..." (oft-quoted statement by those who dare to open Pandora's Box on TV). rolleyes.gif Batter-up! (Shall we start with the "Thai-er than Thou" critics? It's always a good smokescreen for hiding rude behavior...) whistling.gif

I see plenty of Thai men, young, middle aged and old in shorts (of the Camel, short cargo pants variety) in and around shopping centers in Bangkok, and on the sky train at the weekend. So if the locals can get away with it, "when in Rome.......".

  9. Slightly off topic, I am a regular weekend rider in Prapadaeng and nearly every week I find new routes (and get lost) in the lung of Bangkok. I have decided to invest in a smart phone especially for this so that I can mark off all my routes. Apparently, the only really detailed map of this area is used by the post office and they do not release copies to the public. Just need to determine which app would serve me best.

  10. I use a kryptonite cable lock, an abus U lock (D lock) and a cheap and cheerful cable lock. If in public areas where there are dedicated parking areas such as shopping centers, I always fasten up close to the securtity guard/bike park attendant.

I have found that the U lock is too short/narrow in some cases (when the railings are very thick), so in those cases I use the U lock to lock the back wheel to the frame and the cable locks to fasten the bike to metal railings, not forgetting to lock up the front wheel. It gets quite heavy though carting all the locks everywhere you go. The abus weighs a tonne, but at least bolt cutters won't get through it.

  11. Yes, do like your parents do: watch endless hours of cheesy brainless soap operas every night. At least with social media they are interacting in some form.

My father in law made a comment about me always being on my iPad...I showed him that this is how I keep up on my news, stay in touch with friends, watch shows that I want to watch, read books, learn languages (Duolingo anyone?), play silly as well as thinking games, compose and record music, work, etc. That made him dizzy so he turned back around and with the rest of the family stared at the TV for the next three hours.

My real parents in the States aren't much better. They'll watch the evening news from 5-7 every night, hearing the same 10 stories 4-5 times each.

I won't bother you and your TV, so please don't bother me about my fun learning entertainment tool.

At least they are interacting with another human being.

Social skills you will never learn in cyber world.

How many people in the privacy of their own home sit down at a computer and immediately grow to be seven feet tall and invincible.

    ..with big balls!!!!!

  12. Another bandwagon opportunity for an official to get publicity.

Do you know anything about Paveena? She helps underprivileged all the time, you won't see it as it is not high profile and it is the media that makes these high profile cases more public.

So a former supermodel is under privileged or is she now poor and penniless because she blew all her cash or drugs and partying ?

I'm not saying Paveena doesn't do go but I'm sure she doesn't mind the publicity either.

How did the media find out she went to hospital or in other words who told them and that would include members of her staff along with many others.

Paveena is a known publicity junky. She uses women's and children's rights for her own self aggrandizement.

  13. I thought this scheme was introduced during Taksin's first term as PM in the 90's. I could be mistaken. In any case, when it was first introduced I just ignored it and never made the 90 day reports. It was only when I did my annual extension and a stamp put in my passport telling me to do the 90 day report that I started doing it. I could no longer plead ignorance. First time I was fined Baht 2k , but have kept up with it since. About 4 years now.

It does not seem to serve any purpose but give officials something to do. I had lived in my last abode for 11 years and have lived in my current home for 2 years, so it is not as if I move around a lot. It would make much more sense to make a record of your current address and only update the record at immigration when you move. But that would be too obvious or simple.

  14. I thought they only ate carrion. Unusual to take live fish unless the fish are sick. You are going to have to set a trap, perhaps a large crate baited with a dead fish and drop the crate using a string to pull out the support stick. But you could be in for a long wait. Also, once in the box you need to grab him/her which will not be easy as they do bite. Another alternative is to bait a a rabbit snare. But you need to be quick after snaring him. If you leave it too long you could hurt him or even end up killing him.
