  1. I got the GPRS internet working on the phone now, and I have the phone seeing the laptop and the laptop seeing the phone, but I cant seem to get online.

Im not sure what the number to dial out should be on the laptop for the D600. Any ideas?

Oh boy, this is going to be difficult. I am not very sure how it works with the mobile phone but you probably have to set up a networking going between the two, the phone as an internet gateway. Go to Network Connections, then Set up New Network. Then you gotta play with the IP settings. Just try something along those lines until someone else on this forum comes by with a better and more precise way of doing it.

  2. Thanks for your comments, JohnG. The line quality seems to be good, according to my router's line and attentuation protocol.

I don't care so much about a disconnect every 12 hours, the problem remains here that the reconnect fails every few days. Doing something else does not resolve the issue. Calling thier helpline alsways results in half-hour or longer phone calls to charming ladies with reasonable English skills, but seemingly no knowledge about Adsl. At the end of these calls I always end up with a new Password, sometimes also a new username, and then the line works again for 2 or 3 days.

Glad to hear you have better results!

    Sunny

    Hi Sunny,

I live in CHiang Mai, and been using HiNet for a couple years now. Thing is that I had my ADSL being disconnected every few hours and sometimes every few minutes. It was totally a frustrating affair until this year. I suspected that the problem might be in the phone line itself. True enough the TT&T service person did a check on the phone line and there was something wrong with it. It was a faulty line. They fixed it and my ADSL has only been disconnected on its own 4 times max within a span of 2 months. Try getting the line checked instead! all the best. Do PM me if it works.

  3. I might be from Hungry but I beleive that ther is no such thing as a "Good English Breakfast." There is however a variation of a good American Breakfast. That is a fact. There also might be a good "Aulstralian Breakfast." A good Engish Breakfast? Not possibly that bad.

An Australian breakfast is that with lamb chops instead of bacon ? American breakfast in thailand seems to be coffee with that bloody awful toast thats made from really cheap bread.

And a Malaysian breakfast is something you never stop having once you've had it!

  4. For all those saying Chiang Mai has 'lost its charm', let me suggest that it is you who are losing your charm.

Chiang Mai is simply a growing city with all the inherrent associated problems. People still move here, and they still move away... And life goes on for the rest of us.

    What's the big deal?

    Simple mind, simple thoughts...

    Exactly! :o

CM attacts millions every year. Despite its pollution (yearly affair), everyone flocks here. Forget tourists from foreign countries. CM had record high visitors (from within Thailand and abroad) to Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep, and the whole works around the city during 2005. Go ask the forest ranger, he'll tell you how much revenues CM made last year. Are there going to be more tourists here this year? You bet!

Why has CM lost its charm past few years? Well cause its just attracting more people here. Its growing. Look at new mooban developments. Are they selling? Of course. Its a booming city. For some of us who have been here 4 years or more, yes lots of changes. Whether for the good or the bad, no one can be sure cause its all individual tastes of how a city to be at the end of the day. Its not a small city being centered just within the moat anymore. Middle ring roads have establishments makings lots of money each day.

I don't mind it a bit. Its where I call home and unless and until a Thai knocks on my door and says "you do not belong here with good reasons to back it up", I shall be here.

  5. A requirement for a good breakfast place is that is open at breakfast time. I'm sure for some of the denizens of this forum that means one o'clock in the afternoon but for me it's eight in the morning.

now that you mentioned it, how true! i'd have some kaw man khai (chicken rice), keow teow, at the various local stalls then :o .. forgot its a topic on "breakie"

  6. i had a st. bernard. love em so much. most beautiful dog (most clumsy) as well. but they just need so much attention and no matter how much love and attention you give them. they lack one thing, the right climate for them to live in. Thailand, no matter how north you get, just aint enough. our dog was always heading towards mud to keep himself cool. my dog eventually got stolen. perhaps our garden was a bit too big for him that we didnt even realize a thief in there. they are such loving dogs.

my opinion is that st. bernards should not be bred here. period. there is lack of knowledge about st. bernards here. someone mentioned a st. bernard have hip dysplasia. well its very common as they cannot have the regular puppy food that most puppies have simply because too much protein gets all the muscles and mass grow faster than the bone growth can keep up. They need a special puppy meal with more calcium intake rather than a focus on protein.

  7. I just got a new cell phone yesterday (samsung D600) and I want to take advantage of its bluetooth features and use it to connect my laptop to the internet.

Has anyone tested this out yet? What kind of speeds are you able to get? How is coverage in places like Samui?

Im trying to set it up now. Im going to go with the 1 baht/min plan until I see how relaible the service and speed is before I commit to a monthly package.

I already have DSL at home but this would be great when I am out around town and on little trip around thailand.

u don't sound very poor to me .. ! :o .. D600. err i have tried using gprs and the whole setup is as bad as it can be!. Don't know about Bluetooth connections between your mobile and your laptop but i always get disconnected between the both. Hence i hate those bluetooth headsets.

nothing gets better than ADSL at this moment for internet browsing until 3G kicks in. And even when does kick in, you might just have to buy a nice new phone if your D600 is not a 3G phone.

3G is being use extensively in Malaysia and Singapore as alternatives to ADSL. GPRS? never had good experiences with it so you might wanna wait till some other post their views on it.

  8. I'd eat at Mike's if there was a veggie burger option. I know some people think you have to have a separate grill & everything but I'm not that hardcore. Anyway, I had a couple of burgers there in my former, sinful, meat-eating days. They were good, but the best in my opinion are the onion rings.

Interesting comments - thank you - tell me the requirements to meet the needs of vegetarians who like yourself are not too hardcore - i have tried many products but as yet nothing which is more than bland.

To me, a decent vegie burger is more about texture. Firm on the inside, with an outer crust. Taste is secondary, but as long as it's not a horrible taste, I'll try it. I had a lentil burger 30 years ago which was quite tasty. :o

the indian recipes of making vegetarian burgers are good. with some of the masala in the vege mix(or maybe no need masala or curry powder), you can't go wrong. mostly made of either lentils, potato, cauliflower, soybean stuff, or some vegetarian kofta mix. it would not be typical "Western Burger" but sure to match some of the vegetarian needs for a tasty yummy and not so bland burger. unless your customers rather have just pure western styles of cooking it. just a suggestion. i am definately a meat eater and aint complaining :D

while i am at suggestions, there is one seat which is a bit too close to the counter.. do something about it .. :D .. i get jammed in there sometimes.

but i have to comment that your staff that work there are full of joy. especially if you know some thai. they can crack some jokes. they surely remember what the customers prefer in their orders.

  9. Just in case, the differences between AFPL and GPL:

    AFPL: http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/doc/cvs/Public.htm

    GPL: http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html

AFPL is more restrictive and apply mostly on printable and document files, when GPL is the common license used for most of the GNU softwares (GNU/Linux) and others. In case of doubt choose the GPL one. :o

thanks wallalai. wasnt sure about AFPL. I use GPL scripts on websites that i create. well now i know ! :D ..

"Now for my next question. Is it possible yet, to e-mail you guys the Massaman Curry The way technology is going, i bet it's not too long off "

Incidently my wife just cooked me some massaman yesterday! .. so even with the speed of internet these days. i wont want it for a month at least :D .. thanks for the offer though. maybe rio666uk might want some ! let me know how you got it through to him though.

  10. well, i have been there and its good some nice food being sold there. i sat at one of the bar areas and someone told me that someone else is seated there. so..... walked over to whomever i had a meeting with that day. there i was greeted by nice people. so it really depends where you hang out there. some of them have their "gang" kinda areas where they would rather just have their friends around. (u know like animals that show their authority over a certain area in which they piss in).

bought some food from the bear's den stall and of course royal india's stall. was good food though. and i went back happy after talking to some friendly people. its really a very big event and something big for chiang mai and gymkana. its starts 4th april if i am not mistaken. worth a day out at the sixes. cold beer and good food.

  11. To clarify - Mike no longer owns the Mikes Original Burger Bars - One year ago he sold the one at Thapae.

Miguels is Mike's new venture and is no way related to the Mike's Original Burger Bars

A courteous request when writing about either - please refer to the proper names to avoid confusion!

    Thanks

Are you Mike btw? With this as your first post on TV, hmmm.... (i might be wrong though so quit the flaming if it starts)

A good example of confusion - i am the owner of Mike's Burger Bars - not Mike of Miguels!!

ahhh ok .. got it. Well nice to meet you. I enjoy your burgers a lot just so that you don't confuse me with someone who doesn't. But welcome to TV!. Look forward to more posts from you. :o

  12. Cheers Tywais and rio,

Rio can you be so kind as to talk me through the instructions on that site? It gives you options of the following:-

    PDFCreator-0_9_0_AFPLGhostscript_32bit.msi 13670960 262613 i386 .msi (Windows installer)

    PDFCreator-0_9_0_AFPLGhostscript.exe 10667398 309648 i386 .exe (32-bit Windows)

    PDFCreator-0_9_0_GPLGhostscript.exe 11778429 74885 i386 .exe (32-bit Windows)

    PDFCreator-0_9_0_Source.zip 2231620 22300 i386 Source .zip

    PDFCreator-0_9_0_WithoutGhostscript.exe

And then it asks you to choose a "mirror" :o

Sorry for my "numbness" in this field :D But i could cook you a great Massaman Curry :D

    MrBoJ

Id go for the third one ending with .exe. Self executable file. Not sure about the AFPL and GPL difference though between the second and third one. GPL sounds more like an Open Source License (freeware). Mirrors are just different servers as to where the file is located. Choose a mirror closest to you is what they would say so that the transfer speed is faster. You can choose any mirror, it would give you the same file.

I'd like my Massaman Curry now :D

  13. I cant get membership at the Amari.

if you don't mind me asking, why not?

    nothing personal, i hope :o

they said on the phone that they were "full for this year". somebody else told me the same thing as well.

Chiang Mai Orchird doesnt sound too far away and had read somewhere that you can use their swimming pool for a fee.

  14. To clarify - Mike no longer owns the Mikes Original Burger Bars - One year ago he sold the one at Thapae.

  15. Speaking of seafood, did anyone try the place on the Canal Road just South of the Suthep Road intersection (Ping Payom market). It's on the canal road, on the left when driving on the canal road towards the SUthep road intersection.

Nope havent been there. Not very familiar with that part of town though although been in CM long time.

I did happen to stop behind a tuk-tuk with the advert of a restaurant called Singapore Street? Now, I am definately a fan of singaporean and malaysian food. Anyone been there or heard of it???

Its time we had one of these kinds of restaurants.

  16. hi guys,

cant help but mention my opnions on good places to eat here in CM. I love going to MS Suki on the superhighway just before you turn left into the Chiangmai Land. Its next to Ban Maa & Meow Animal Hosp. It looks expensive but its not. The servings are awesome. Try the cashew nut chicken, you'd be amazed on the amount of cashew nuts thrown in. I also enjoy their pork popias(spring rolls).

Another good place the Andaman Seafood. The owner is from Phuket, hence the name but I really enjoy the seafood preparations. Its just before Central Airport Plaza heading coming in from Mahidol Rd. You pass by Chiangmai Land on your right. Go on straight, keep left and just before the overhead bridge going to airport and town, there is a whole new seafood centre there. i truly enjoyed their curry style crabs.

  17. After of my woofing today I have to say that the air is much cleaner this Wednesday. Driving home on the eastern ring road I could make out Doi Suthep. I can see blue sky and clouds. Definitely better. Perhaps it is improving...

You're right on there Jomama, for some inexplicable reason today was much clearer. I've just watched the sun set on the doi, and it's the clearest it's been in a long time. Almost a pleasure to watch again.

Its back today though. Yesterday was nice with some nice breeze for the past two days.

thanks everyone for the wealth of information on pollution, numbers, ratios etc. maybe some rain would help.

  18. Just out of curiosity, has anyone heard about possible flights from CNX to Dehli or Mumbai? It was announced briefly somewhere on Air Sahara planned routes. (India's Budget Airlines)

Could not get a confirmation about this but it would be nice to fly into Dehli from Chiang Mai.

  19. I'm talking Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc., raised in the west, English-speaking, and settled in Chiang Mai. Just curious....

Asia does include many other countries. Many of them English speaking, while not being raised in the West. Would they be very different from "Westernised Asians"? Language seems to be the same.

  20. This is it.

I know I'm not adding anything valuable to the thread, but I just want you all to look out of your window today and ask yourself " would I live here if I had no string attach?".

Of course I would, and I do. Chiang Mai is my home. It's so much more than simply bad air, or a day like today, with added visible humidity to make it seem worse than it is, or maybe to show it for its truth? I don't know, but after 20 years living here full-time, I still have never had any breathing or lung problems, so outside of 2-3 months per year like this, I can easily handle it.

Much better than some folks, for sure. Bye :o

LIke Ajarn, this is my home for 4 plus years now. But my sinuses have been swollen for a couple days now. I shall be here for a long time but just have to deal with the pollution until education sets in about how to reduce the burning.
