I am considering going back to the USA but to a smaller market city. My take on it is you can live as cheaply in a small town or small city as anywhere I would want to live in Thailand.

I spend around 150,000 Baht on a normal month. Probably more like 250,000 on a month
if I go on a short vacation. I don't need lectures on how to do it cheaper I know you can. My point is for some people a place like the USA works out reasonable. Not everybody is holed up in Thailand because it is cheaper.

The food I eat i way cheaper in the USA I probably spend around 9,000 a week at Villa and another 5,000 from Passiondelivery. Yes, it includes a couple of bottles of wine. The price for the quality of which is atrocious.

Weekend trips about the same. Probably cheaper in the states as higher end resorts are not much different in price in either place.

In the USA I would  buy a house so yeah it is a bit different but I can own it there so hard to put a price on that.

So I like drinking wine, eating nice meals mostly at home. The occasional trip maybe every 2 or 3 months for a long weekend. A holiday once a year that is more major. So for me I can live the same at home as I can here without altering my life.

Though the quality of many things would be much higher back home. For Villa prices back home you are shopping at a higher end supermarket. The stuff in Villa is considered junk back home. Even the bottom end American supermarkets have Villa out gunned by a country mile.

The 50K a month on a decent condo in Bangkok would pay all of my basic expenses in the USA. If I own a house it does anyway. So that would leave around 3,333 Baht a day for eating out and recreation etc. The types of recreation I enjoy may change but it is plenty.

I would probably save money in the USA actually.

It is crazy to live in Thailand on western style!!!

    Pay for rent 50K???So stupid!!!

I think that you have very poor life indeed, cos. you must pay so much for everything!!!

I am surprised at the prices now.  50 baht food carts are now the norm.  Used to be 30-40?  Things are also going upscale pretty fast.  You have harbor mall in Pattaya and all these pricey gogo places and it's not cheap anymore for mr cheap charlie expat on his 40,000 baht a month income.  I wish the baht would crash like the other currencies but it doesn't look likely at this point.  I think you can live cheaper in Malaysia or Vietnam than you can in Thailand because their currencies are now weaker than the baht.  That being said, you can still find bargains in Thailand if you look outside the tourist cities.

Malaysia is far more expensive than Thailand.Vietnam about same or even cheaper!!!

  3. I went to Jomtien Immigration last Thursday to renew my extension for married to a Thai visa and there was no mention of the absence of children with myself and my wife . Indeed there has never been any problems re:children in the 5 years I have been on married to a Thai national extensions .

In Samut Parkarn Last Sep I did my extension(4th extension) and because of no children the Bangkok office sent three agents to the house , they had my next door neighbor come in my house and sign a document . This year getting ready for another extension While collecting forms required for the renewal , Immigration told the wife that Bangkok will come to the house again because of no children, I think its pertinent to say this requirement started last year.

Yeah,I think it is quite common and normal to check your residency, cos. you have benefits upon marriage Visa. They can check us all,but that is normal procedure. Why some people make drama upon that!Nobody does not rejected anyone from getting Visa if they have requirements upon Law,they just need to check out that everything is in order!

  4. Many people here just invent problems which does not exist.I never had any problem with immigration in Bangkok in 6 years and now in Samut Prakan.I got every time my retirement visa same day.My friend got his marriage Visa as well!I read a lot of scrawl here about special form we must fill about our private and social life.Nobody ,never ask me that!!!Some people just like to invent problems, even it is much harder to obtain Visa for Canada,USA or EU!!!

  5. I guess i could go koh chang immigration on Friday. So how many days fine and how much per day am I looking at (I'll try arguing first that I've been in their system as PENDING since 16th)?

Do nor argue with Immigration office!!!!This is very, very wrong attitude!!!

I live in Samutprakarn and they told me few times that is not possible to report online there. You can talk with them and ask,but NOT argue!!!They are not responsible for application online!

I was never successful on reporting online there!!!

Just go there and report yourself on the nearest immigration!

  6. Been there done that, I survived 3 years with my savings without any additional income. An average of 25k per month. No problem, just live cheap , rent rooms from 5k - 7k .

That is true!!!You can live pretty good on that budget!!!

Rent nice small air con studio in Sukhumvit(Udomsuk,Bang Chak,Punawity,On Nut) for 4000-4500 baht

Food-Thai ,about 6000-7000 per month and you can live for les than 20K easy

  7. Cons:

    You will pay for everything.

    Girlfriends family will be involved

For me, these two things are definitely a pro.

I would have nightmares if my wife would pay anything. Conservative life matters. thumbsup.gif

Regarding family it seems that our western culture is eliminating the family ties in all ways. With a Thai family, if you married the right girl, you will get strong alliances with all close relatives. Ok, true, if you married the smoking hot bar girl with drug addiction and a broken family, it might be bad to get family involved.

Check it out for yourself if they want money for booze or sell their own land to invest in your business. thumbsup.gif

It is your money and you can afford to lose it.

Any advice about this matter anymore is just loosing the time and energy!!!

After failure you will start again and be more wise.We learn on our mistakes,at least most of us!!!

I live here some time and speak Thai fluently ,eat almost only Thai food and hang up almost only with Thais! My wife speak only Thai language, but I will never do same as you.You can not "win" in business you can not control!!! So pity to you and hope to be clever next time, cos. in this game you can only lose.

  8. I googled 'thai kale' and it came up 'thai kale with pork' which indeed is a common dish...my folks just refer to it as 'pak' like all other veges...

it's the most ubiquitous leafy green vege in Thailand, it seems...always available everywhere...I usually wash thoroughly, remove the tough stems, chop once roughly diagonally and add to a stir fry (on top, any stir fry; chicken , pork, tofu, etc) cover and steam during last few minutes of cooking...

    not bad....
