UK government scraps plan to replace all EU laws by the end of 2023
RuamRudy replied to onthedarkside's topic in World News
I have met lots of people who didn't vote in the referendum for various reasons but precious few who were happy with the result. I think you are being a little biased to assume no vote can be taken as approval. And now, I can literally think of only 2 people I know personally who think brexit was the right idea. -

You wrote "the British do what we do" as if to imply that brexit had the majority support of the country. At least, that was what I inferred. If, however, you did not intend to suggest that brexit had the support of the majority of the electorate then I humbly apologise. -

I am not questioning the methodology, I am challenging your suggestion that brexit occurred because the British, en mass, wanted brexit. If that was the case, the percentage of the electorate who actively voted for it would be higher than the mid 30s, which if I recall, was the reality. The EU might not have gotten the support needed to prevent this ongoing disaster, but brexit in no way reflects the views of the majority of Brits. -

Of course, the vast majority of British people didn't vote for brexit in 2016, and even more British people want a return to the EU now. -
If confidence is enough to be categorised as strong then I can accept that, but confidence alone is insufficient to be an effective or convincing leader. Truss has neither the personal gravitas nor the intellectual capacity to be seen as anything other than a variation on the 'Dennis Rodman visits North Korea' circus. Add to that the baggage of her disastrous tenure in 10 Downing Street and I fear that she will accomplish nothing of substance while generating potential downside.

Why some people are spreading false rumours about the Texas gunman

Odnoklassniki seems to have changed over the years, but basically it was an early day Russian version of Friends Reunited, and was much more sedate than the edgier vkontakte. Maybe the limited moderation is what appealed. -
I can only think that it's some attempt to generate credibility, show her as a senior politician and former PM. If she strides around the world's hot spots making vainglorious speeches, people might forget the reality of her abilities? I am sure they won't, but I guess she is worried about her legacy being nothing more than a joke.

Yes, that's the basic premise of democracy.
-
I am not in the SNP so not mine, if you please - and this thread is not about them.
-
Well, if we had a proper democracy in the UK and I chose to stand as president, you would have the opportunity to vote for me, or an alternative. However currently you have no say whatsoever on your head of state.
-
Quite possibly, but the point is that there would be a mechanism to remove this elected head of state.

No, as I wrote in the post, I copied it from the website of Republic - click on the underlined heading and it will take you directly to the page.
-
This is lifted from the website of Republic - what is the flaw you see in their reasoning? Why do we want a republic? It's simple: Hereditary public office goes against every democratic principle. And because we can’t hold the King and his family to account at the ballot box, there’s nothing to stop them abusing their privilege, misusing their influence or simply wasting our money. Meanwhile, the monarchy gives vast arbitrary power to the government, shutting voters out from major decisions affecting the national interest. The King can only ever act in the interests of the government of the day and does not represent ordinary voters. The monarchy is a broken institution. A head of state that’s chosen by us could really represent our hopes and aspirations – and help us keep politicians in check.
-
Not my business - I would prefer he took the more principled stand of Adam Price, but nothing I can do about it.
-
A minority, it would seem: Most people are not interested in the King’s coronation, major new poll shows "Most British people are not interested in the King’s coronation, though many said they would still watch it or take part in related festivities, according to a YouGov poll."
-
That is hardly the most flattering of photos though - she looks positively sneering and supercilious in it.

Charles is King of 15 countries - but for how much longer?

No protester used a rape alarm to disrupt anything yesterday. The Met, however, decided to stifle freedom of speech by creating fictitious claims to remove anyone who wasn't toeing the sycophant line. With the increased number of met officers in town yesterday,I can understand why women were carrying rape alarms.
