  1. And when they burn the fields, EVERYONE --RICH, POOR, AND those in between-- get sick, ... eventually! It is a double-whammy! Free smoking with an added dose to get you sick faster! No problem. There are lots of drugs you can take to keep you alive and keep paying for the drugs, the mia-noy, and the Benz of the hospital staff.

How many doctors are out there raising a stink?

    NONE!

But, they might be forced to breathe the stuff anyway, although they are probably all taking a break somewhere safe near a beach.

    Poetic (in)JUSTICE?

When Thailand will ban those chemicals that are illegal in the rest of the world?

This one iis banned in many places, but there are problems with others in the West. On the other hand, farmers in the west might be a little bit better at reading the dosage, not because they car emore about people, but because they do not want to pay for more of the stuff. The neoliberal wheel, no government regulations for corporations, is creating lots of problems from banks that are investing, corruption (sorry, lobbyism) (of course), and poor electoral systems,... we all suffer. Well! The poorer you are the more you do, but I digress.

  3. How long have these guys been in power? Isn't it a bit late and a weak way to solve this problem? Let me hypothesize that these guys have taken advantage of the situation before. Maybe there are too many the economic viability of the business for the Thais that run it? Is this vote getting?

Has the situation worsened or improved during their mandate? I rarely visit these areas, but I do not recall seeing Africans doing business in those areas in the past. Just observing.

no shortage of jobs but lazy cows prefer to play starfish .. 2000 baht/hour better than bank manager salary

BUT, someone is paying the lady 2000 B. and that is OF COURSE okay? WOW! She is the only culpable one in the transaction. If men used their own hand and heads they wouldn't abuse the situation and ... feel good about it by pointing the finger the other way. I said finger. And I erect my middle finger at whom use these services. They are part of the problem.

The dear leader will never correct this! in the 49 years I have been kn Thailand there has never been a shortage of prostitutes, most of them have to do it to support their families, the sons all leave the home and their families to do what it that they do, which from my observation is noting! and pattaya? you got to be kidding! take the prostitutes out of pattaya and it will become a ghost town!   things will never change until you get rid of the tourist trash and the thai trash!

... and the foreigners who grab the trash!

But, as another person posted, even for Thais, viable employment opportunities for women (and decent options for men as well, on all fronts) must be offered. Not sure how much a ThaI "pimp" can make on a good day though. Seeing how abysmal the state of education, run by the entitled and the established type (like in many countries, mind you), and it is hard to see progress. Thailand 4.0? Does the PM and his followers know anything about anything beyond a mouse and a screen? The patriarchal (often the old man knows best) rule has to go, among other things.

We had a small pig farm and had the Agri people come in and build an underground Biogas collector. The volume was approx 2 tons and worked well. The pig manure was (of course) used as fertilizer. The cost was around 20K baht.

Do you think that mass production of such a contraption should not reduce significantly its price? Add improvements to make it cheaper and easier. Maybe add a robot or a drone to do the collecting too ! In fairness, it is hot and it is hilly sometimes. Do Thai farmers and big agro businesses use Burmese like construction companies use Burmese too?

I taught the village how to make compost. Many did it for a while and were in general, pleased with the outcome BUT after a few years, the "lazy factor" kicked in again and it was back to burning and chemical fertilizers.

Interesting! Must be the hot climate. Wait! It probablty is.

Do you think the biogas contraption that I showed (modified to suit the Thai market in whatever ways it can) could simplify the process enough to make it appealing (with the free gas and the free compost)? True! Gas bottles last forever in my experience and they are dirt cheap at 400 B. True! Composting is done by burning. Sort of. How about a governmental program in schools to evaluate 15 anti-pollution video ads by parents and children as a soft manner to educate them on the consequences of their action! Surely, they are not going to continue burning their fields if they know that they are causing harm to their children AND them, as the videos would persuade incontrovertibly. It has to be done smartly. This is one of the smart ways that was done in some areas where smoking use was generalized and in 30 years it has been  virtually "eradicated". Big changes like these don't happen overnight, but demand clever persuasion techniques and incentives, along with peer pressure and losing face pressures. Children will remind their parents everyday that they are stupid and uncaring. Your thoughts?

  8. As an atheist, I see some value of religion in SOME of the morals that they advice people to follow. There are good ones. I do not see a world void of morality or lack of guidance as a good thing. Sorry! I am not an extremist atheist. That being said, all of those leaders should find one common "god", one common set of decent morals, a common denominator as it were and make ONE "religion", but without all of those Disney-like characters. Many religious people are decent well-meaning people who want peace. The leaders, many of them, are just there for the money.

biogas production is very old, and highly used in Chiang Mai, in june is very big conference on biogas production and anaerobic digestion, in chiang mai, AdTech2018 organized by Griffith university, and kmutt.

It is silly to assume that Thai dont know or dont use biogas

Oh! Really! Where is that massive gas production happening? Farmers are what bringing their residue there? Sure, SOME MIGHT know, but many farmers are still burning all the farm residue? The key is to have means and cheap enough means for farmers to use what SOME KNOW instead of smoking up the whole region!

Here is the question. Does each farmer make gas or a local village organization pay farmers for the stuff they burn to make gas? I don't think it is happening since I see and breathe the smoke.

... and they will send their children to Davos, Switzerland.

True, the very rich will. But what about the borderline type, like the prof. in agronomy that lives next door and whose daughter lives in Chiang Mai. I have sent him by email the biogas idea. Time will tell what he says or does. I have sent the idea to a well-educated, English speaking Thai who has a degree in agronomy (age 60) and a restaurant owner who could certainly reduce his cost by using the scraps to make gas and he thought it was a good idea. He has just been married and is going to have kids soon. He is young (35). Time will tell what they do with this idea.

I suppose it is possible that Thai farmers are just as conservatives as the average English-speaker who is told that the English spelling system (who everyone agrees is a nightmare) should be reformed to shave 3 years off learning it and speed up learning in general, improve pedagogies (student-centered, individualized), and allow lower classes' children a fighting chance. But, few sees past their nose like the Thai farmer, perhaps. Farmers are usually conservative. I recommend the Jean de Florette/Manon des sources movie to anyone who has not seen it.

No reversal in sight. The BoT is stepping back and allowing the baht to become stronger.

"KBank, the country's fourth-largest lender by assets, predicts the baht will appreciate to 31.2 baht versus the dollar next month."

Well, if you cherry pick, I can too.

But Mr Kobsit predicted the baht would reverse the trend in May in light of a repatriation-driven dividend.

Mr Kobsit said the local currency will be more volatile throughout the year amid both local and international uncertainties.

  12. The idea is that you have the incentive of free gas, no burning/smoke, better compost/soil. How many people have a water tank to avoid being charged?

There is the power of education, although it might take a few years for the children to grow up and be more open-minded. Mind you, it would require an educational system that is open to change and diversity of opinion. Still, as they see their children cough and their relatives die, eventually some are going to connect the dots.

There is the power of the internet too. I know of many Thai who are not as "stupid" as you make them to be. Sure, the farmers might be more set in their ways. Isn't that true in any nation?True, the old leaders will also be reluctant to change the way. Still, change is inevitable. New generations will complain. When the leaders' children get sick, they will get it.

I live in the area and understand the lady's problems. The markets benefit at their expense and refuse to take proper steps to prevent parking and other issues they create. As to the damage, that was extreme, but years of frustration can cause irrational actions. The local government benefits from the markets so no action is ever taken against them. Maybe the exposure the media has given this incident will force some action.

"Benefits"! Let's call a spade a spade. I am told by Thais that the police makes the roun and collect fees to operate. Guess on what side they are going to be. Mind you in the west, it is a bit like this, but the mafia (the govn't) has the ressource to hire people to do the different jobS. And they are well paid by the people! AKA "us"!
