in my opinion, I believe that the UK's exit from the EU is in a much stronger position than in June. The recent attacks in Berlin, The falling Banks, the economies of Italy, Greece and others. The fact that other states want there own referendum. The UK is doing just nicely and those who still can't seem to grasp what the referendum was about, getting out of the corrupt EU might start to see that the EU stranglehold on the UK, is not for good of the UK people and for many of the people of other EU states.

The UK has always been skeptical of the EU and rightly so. I expect TM is smiling contently with the way the EU is going recently. I am sure I will get the remain camp slapping me down for having this view.

" The UK is doing just nicely " - that's one way of putting it.

Is the will of the people stronger than the pound in their pocket? The cost of brexit will squeeze the pips out of government funding for years to come.

Phillip Hammond is on track with an undetermined deficit forecast. Of course they cannot say when the deficit will be cleared as they seek the best possible deal.

The Government borrowed a higher-than-expected £12.6bn in November, leading to fears that Brexit is having an impact on the UK’s public finances.

Actually it sounds much more like the other way around.  TM is not giving an inch to anyone because she needs a clear run at Brussels.  There is no need for debate about all the details, suffice to say that we're going for Brexit with the best deal available in every respect.  If you don't like the way your MP is handling this -- write to him/her.  ;)

She is like a fish trying to get off the hook. In her time as Home Secretary she did little to reduce immigration and even if she stopped all Europeans from coming to the UK she would still be miles off target, but not prepared to admit the target is unrealistic. She was quite happy to abandon the previous public borrowing target, but immigration, different story.

She seems to think that this 'best deal' tactic is a get out of jail card, its about time people realised that there is no such thing as a 'best deal', there can only ever be a bad deal or an even worse deal.

OK, tried that but it wants me to select a package but that means that I have recurring charges again?

and what is the buffet about?

    a5.JPG

Then there's this - I am confused cos there is nothing for me to Select.....

    a6.JPG

    Sorry that I'm so dumb.....

It is quite straightforward once you get used to it, I was just as confused to start with.

If you press the detail button in the middle you get a bit more info. If there is no price shown in the 'Price'  column then it is on a top up basis and not a recurring charge. Top ups start at 50 baht and give 30 days validity.

A friend of mine that is on the same package as I am spends 6 months here and 6 months in UK. He is not a computer person and before he goes he goes to 7 eleven and buys 6 x 50 baht cards and puts them on his phone. This puts 300 baht on his balance and extends the current validity about 6 months.

I top up online at 50 baht a month and when I go back on holiday just do an extra top up to push the validity forward.

I suspect the 'Buffet' is a translation issue, probably means a 'Variety' of features depending on package selected. As I said I think 'Call to other networks is the list you should be looking at.

Not sure how you would stand making payment from outside Thailand so it may need to be left until you get back. Nothing wrong with establishing the options though, good luck.

Thank you very much. I think I will buy the cheapest flight as a proof of exit for the peace of mind. It's not a big loss anyway.

You are better off flying anyway. I went to SR a fortnight ago and looked at all the options before deciding how to travel. The flight is a lot more comfortable and hassle free and not a great deal more. I went with Thai Smile at 5000 baht return, be careful with Air Asia as there are additional charges during the booking. With Thai Smile a snack and checked baggage are included, bear in mind that you need checked baggage if you wish to bring any liquid back.

    Super, thanks.

I am in Thailand and everything worked as you suggested.

I can read that my wife registered the SIM when we bought it.

I entered her ID and got yhe message about the need to visir an AIS shop.

Not sure when I'll do that, rarely go to the big city LOL

Having bought the card on 19/11/2016 which included some credit,

mobile data on the phone was turned off when the SIM was installed.

I made one short call but the balance went low and I topped up with 100b on 29/11/2016.

There are 2 messages about a free VDO Movie 1GB has been activated but I never used it so I suppose there is a charge for this Free service and that would be where the money went?

Later got low balance message and we just added another 100b on 17/12/2016 which took the bal to 103.18b.

The phone had not been used since the first call but the balance was down to 3.18b ?

I had used the *129*1# on 17/11/2016 and the bal is now steady at 103.18 according the the AIS website.

Until I visit a shop, I can't access the calling details but my account looks like this

    a3.JPG

I only ever want voice calls so is there a way to turn everything else off?

    Many thanks for your help

In response to your last comment - Yes.

Menu on left hand side - click 'One Number for Promotion' and then 'Change Main Package'

You have a choice of Talk, Data or Both on the left hand drop down, so if you only want voice you can change to a "Talk Package".

There are further options on the right hand drop down, "Call to all Networks" probably being the most appropriate. I think I am on No 2 but looks like they have renamed it. The description on my main page is no longer listed.

    Hope that helps

PS if you are on a talk package you can buy a short term data package as an add on. I often get a 24 hour or 3 day data package if going somewhere.

Thanks  - the data connection was the first thing I checked and it was definitely turned off.

The phone has been turned off (since I got on a plane to home, late October) and the balance checked and recorded just before turning off.

    Very strange .... and frustrating!!

I'm back in Thailand in early February 2017 - might leave the phone off until then.

If you go to this website you can see your account.

    https://eservice.ais.co.th/eServiceWeb;jsessionid=AO48v9CYgAG4dOzMdtUkfSjP.undefined

You will need to switch the phone on to get the OTP, I think it is about 20 baht for text on roaming. Once on the site you can turn the phone off again. There is a tab at the top to change to English and if you go to call details and enter your passport number you will see your history and there should be some explanation for the charge.

About a month ago my balance suddenly dropped by about 200 baht and when I checked the history there was a call that had been timed at 192 minutes. I am not disputing the call but it was only to tell someone we were on our way, doubt if it was a minute far less 192. My wife phoned AIS and they said that is what the system recorded and there was nothing they could do. Maybe something similar.

I have had this sim card about 10 years and it is voice only so never have a problem with data charges.

PS. Apologies for the repetition on AIS service. When I got end of page 1, thought it was end of thread, didn't see page 2 till after I posted.

There are now (at least) 3 different companies that offer DIRECT bus from BKK to SR-that means they drop you off before Thai border and pick up after KHmer formalities-in SAME bus-all are big size neat AC-1st class standard. 2 from 3 from Mochit (BoKoSo-affiliate Nattakan and now also the luxury Giantibis-can book online), nr 3 is the ill-reputed Virak Bungkram from the Khao Sarn area(or so) google for s site like movetocambodia.blogspot which has extensive info on all in some blogs.

From PTY (and I really wonder why people here ask and why someone like HKT richie answers) simply ask WHEN THERE from any local agent. Surely there are numerous (as borderrunner or not) vans to not just Poipet but also other borderspots-but the tricky thing is then transpo in KHmerland after.

Flying; the expensive BKKair and ow also AirAsia from either BKK and DMK-obviously BKK=swampy is best to reach from PTY. The quoted other KHmer airline cancels more often as not and mainly seems to only fly when they have a large grouptravel anyway and a few spare seats-as happens so often in this tavelworld and what TV-users seem unable to even grasp.

I went last week with Thai Smile from BKK, cheaper than Air Asia at 5000 baht return. Air Asia advertises a cheaper flight but you get hit with add ons. A lot more convenient than overland, flight about 50 minutes and VOA took about 10 minutes.

I've spoken to several people and very few seemed to understand why their pension wasn't paid from their actual 65th birthday, so for those confused or not given an explanation as to when and what day their state pension starts this might help.

For me, my birthday was on Monday 21st and my NI Number  is ## ## ## 84 # which means my pension is paid on a Friday and started on the first Friday (25th) following my birthday. It's also paid in arrears.

The day your pension is paid depends on your National Insurance number.

Last 2 digits of your National Insurance number Day your State Pension gets paid
    00 to 19 Monday
    20 to 39 Tuesday
    40 to 59 Wednesday
    60 to 79 Thursday
    80 to 99 Friday

Your first payment is made at the end of the first full week after you reach State Pension age.  It won’t include the time between reaching State Pension age and your normal payment day if that’s less than one week.

Yes, I have seen this not long go and it ties in, My last 2 digits is 87 and I get paid on a Friday.

Are you seriously suggesting that these ills have been brought about by the vote for Brexit? Gimme a break Sandy. It is years of mismanagement that has caused this, and if you want to point the finger of blame it should be aimed squarely at Cameron and Osborne, who incidentally would still be at the helm and would still be sailing the good ship "UK" directly towards the rocks had the vote gone the way of the Remainers.

Only the delusional will fail to understand that every piece of bad news relating to the UK's economy will be blamed on Brexit, by politicians on both sides. The Brexit vote is a politician's dream come true - a genuine scapegoat to absolve them of their sins...

Whether you see the indirect relationship or not is immaterial. The increase in public borrowing due to brexit has put a block on the governments ability to increase funding to essential services.

Last night I watched Question time from Maidenhead and members of the audience were suggesting increases in income tax and corporation tax to help ease the pressure on the NHS and social care.

  12. I have done that but my router was a TP Link, the 8968 model. When I asked about distribution they said I should use a TL-WA801ND which is an access point. That was easy to set up and works quite well.

The model you have is very old, but in a new case. I was given one by TP Link as a replacement for my old TOT router and when I tried it out the software was just the same as the TOT. You may be struggling with outdated software.

    And from the same article:

While the monthly data are extremely volatile, the narrowing in the trade deficit in October sets a solid base for trade in the fourth quarter,” said Scott Bowman at the consultancy Capital Economics.

“What’s more, trade should be further supported in the coming months by the fall in sterling seen since the EU referendum, which should improve exporters’ competitiveness and encourage domestic production at the expense of imports."

Which fits with the IMF model reconfirmed here:

    http://www.imf.org/en/News/Articles/2015/09/28/04/53/sores092815b

The comment in my post was based on previous trade but you are of the opinion that the "prediction" regarding the coming months has more credibility. That's a good one.

Predictions before were just about wrong, and brexiters calling those predictions out as alarmist have been proven to be absolutely correct.

There is nothing to show that brexit is a poor decision other than more alarmist predictions. And I predict that those predictions will again turn out to be incorrect.

The key to understanding these ridiculous predictions from remainers is scaremongering. They think that, if they keep on doing it, the sheeple (as they are viewed by the globalists running the remain campaign) will start believing it. They even lie blatantly that they have so far been largely proven right, thinking that the sheeple are too stupid to notice that, so far, they've been wildly wrong!

Predictions are exactly that - predictions, based on a scenario that may or may not come to pass. Five months down the line reality it beginning to kick in but many are determined to keep their head in the sand.

Philip Hammond has admitted that the Brexit vote’s blow to the economy would force the government to borrow £122bn more than hoped as he pushed back government plans to balance the books in his autumn statement.

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/nov/23/philip-hammond-brexit-vote-borrowing-autumn-statement

We are now starting to see the knock on effect of Mr Hammond's "Prediction"

Plans to allow English local authorities to raise council tax bills by an extra 6% over the next two years to pay for social care will be unveiled later by the Government.

    http://news.sky.com/story/ministers-approve-6-hike-in-council-tax-bills-to-help-fund-social-care-10695537

School budgets are facing a real-terms cut of £3bn over the next four years, a report has warned.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/government-schools-budget-cuts-3bn-nao-a7473186.html

This is just the tip of the iceberg, only the delusional can think that nobody has been or will be made to suffer in one way or another by brexit.

Your pension day is on a Wednesday(decided by your NI number), paid four weekly in arrears and starting on the 7th Dec (not sure how they determine the actual first Wednesday after your birthday when they will start paying you). Your pension payments are paid in arrears and start on your first full week after your birthday. So, as your birthday was on  Saturday 19th November your pension will actually start from the first Wednesday after that (two weeks ago on the 23rd November). So you have received the two weeks pension you are due up to today. You will receive four weeks pension every four weeks from today.

This was explained in the letter I received from the DWP when I qualified for my pension a year ago.

That confused me when I started but I never had any explanation. My birthday was 26th August but pension never started until 1st Sept.

This is an example of the idiocy. We can now trade with the 27 EU countries AND with the 165 non EU countries.

The UK trades now under the EU WTO agreement. When the UK leaves the EU there is no guarantee that the UK will get a WTO agreement and if it does it will come at a cost.

Brexit Britain’s drive for a new World Trade Organisation settlement could be blocked by countries with which the UK has territorial disputes such as Argentina or Spain, experts warned today.

The UK will need unanimous agreement from all the WTO’s 160-odd members for its new “schedule” to set baselines for future trade deals.

But specialists at the Institute of Export told The Independent some countries may use the opportunity to force the UK to compromise on other issues.

You forgot to mention that a devalued Pound helps exports rather a lot. Look how well the Euro being undervalued in relation to Germany has helped that country's export market (though they get the rest of the Eurozone to pay for that undervaluation, the crafty so-and-so's).

Official figures showed the UK’s trade deficit with the rest of the world narrowed more than expected in October as exports rose and imports fell. But statisticians said there was little evidence that the weak pound – which makes UK goods cheaper overseas – was boosting exports.

    https://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/dec/09/uk-trade-gap-brexit-economy-pound-construction

  19. I wonder how many actually realised  they were voting to be poorer. I suppose that with all the propaganda over scaremongering many believed that nothing would cost more and they would be better off.

Economists expect the 10 per cent depreciation of trade-weighted sterling since the 23 June Brexit vote to feed through to higher prices in the shops over the next two years, which will, in turn, reduce real household disposable incomes and help slow the economy sharply in 2017.

It was bad info, I personally know some that have done it to Amsterdam and Spain.

The Schengen handbook says there must be an acceptable reason and there are a few examples listed, it is possible some embassies may take a different view on what would be acceptable. The main criteria is that it would have been, or would be, impractical to apply for the visa in the home country.

The guy that took his girlfriend to Amsterdam just said it was a last minute special offer.
