Are you experiencing “Pandemic Fatigue” here in Thailand?
SS1 replied to webfact's topic in COVID-19 Coronavirus
The fatigue comes from the fact that this monkey circus has continued for over 2 years now. It was interesting to observe at first, boring but still somewhat acceptable during the first year, just "going with the flow" and trying not to care. But after 2 years, when you realise it's been a significant amount of your lifetime, it's getting pretty tiring to watch this daily BS. I can only imagine what it feels like for those who've actually lost their livelihoods because of all the restrictions, that some "doctors" and "scientists" have drawn out of their hat. -
Is Thailand rushing to categorize COVID-19 an endemic disease?
SS1 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Same here in Chiang Mai - had over 10 friends catch it during the past month. I should add that a few of them were unvaccinated. It was like a common cold for all.. some only had symptoms for 2-4 days, other a bit over a week. -
Pub-like restaurants become hotspots for Bangkok COVID-19 clusters
SS1 replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
The reported numbers are only a fraction of the real numbers no doubt. But does it matter? In my group of friends over 10 caught it on New Year's Eve. For over half of them it was just a mild cold that went away in 2-4 days, while for the rest (myself included) it was like a regular a flu that lasted 6-10 days. Everyone recovered without issues and is back to normal now. -
It's silly because they're applying restrictions as if the virus could be still somehow eradicated. It's been now 2 years and it isn't even close to disappearing. Most people will eventually get one form of it or another. All these restrictions do is make people suffer more and slow down the spread. Does it matter if you get Covid now, or in a year?

I had 2 Astra Zeneca shots, latest in October. I was infected with Covid (probably Omicron) around New Years' and got sick for 10 days. The sickness was very similar to a regular flu, that I get once or twice a year both in terms of symptoms and duration. Doesn't seem that the vaccines did anything at all, except make me sick for total of 4-5 days from the vaccines themselves.

DUI: More than double cases this New Year a result of more proactive measures
SS1 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
There is no excuse for drunk driving, but what we observed during new years eve in Chiang Mai it was extremely difficult to arrange any type of public transport. We tried every ride hailing app available and it took us hours to get a driver. This is while there were 6 motorbikes waiting on my driveway to be ridden to town, but trying to be good boys we of course left them there overnight. Maybe the goverment could look at providing some alternative transport as well. Again, not an excuse, but I can totally picture every single drunk person in smaller towns going out in their own vehicles if there simply isn't any alternatives available. This is not the case in most developed cities - I've seen in Europe on NYE they've got public transport running all night to ensure people can get out/in without driving. -
As a general principle, items from China don't seem to get taxed/checked at all. I have ordered over 140 items of various sizes and values from Aliexpress to Thailand and have never paid any tax. This is not the case when I've ordered items from US/EU, where I've had to pay on about 40% of my shipments.

Can anyone recommend a place in Chiang Mai to do an allergy test? I have some stomach issues that may be pointing to gluten intolerance, as well as some skin problems that resemble autoimmune disease symptoms. I have used https://www.bewellasia.co/packages/ before and very happy with them, but I think it would be better to have a "pick and choose" version to only test for those allergens that are actually included in my current diet. No need for to test for "wild boar" allergy etc. random stuff included in some of those packages. Perhaps would be good to have a doctor's consultation first who would tell me what to test for exactly.

Sure, I'm not saying the roads are great here, but most of the daily accidents are caused by completely braindead drivers/riders. I've been riding daily here for years and hardly find it shocking, but such articles are quite hilarious when they're finding external factors to blame and ignore the drivers themselves. I've ridden a few years in the UK as well including London. I remember the Brits really struggled with lane discipline on highways, but I don't recall hundreds of bikes cutting through red lights and intersections, driving the wrong way etc.?

What is it with loud exhausts ? (and tail tidy's)
SS1 replied to piston broke's topic in Motorcycles in Thailand
Talking about modern big bikes, they are no longer built with performance but rather noise and emission regulations in mind. Most of the new original exhausts are heavy and restrict performance, so they must go first thing. As to tail tidy's, well most of the original licence plate holders just look absolutely horrible. I've upgraded my exhaust on my bike for the following reasons: -More power, smoother power delivery, engine runs cooler (tuned properly, of course) -Lost 4kg from a high point of the bike -Sounds nicer (not trying to go for as loud as possible, but decent sound) -Safety (it helps a lot in Bangkok, when 90% of the time you're filtering between slow moving cars) -
Lockdown set to be relaxed next week: DDC
SS1 replied to Jonathan Fairfield's topic in Thailand News
The problem with the lockdowns is that they don't seem to work to make the virus disappear. Covid will eventually always spread again, making the lockdowns (almost) entirely pointless. I've seen multiple doctors estimate that most people will eventually get some form of the virus. From my undestanding the point of Covid vaccinations is neither completely stopping the spread of virus, but it will give people the ability to catch the virus with much smaller chances of death or requiring hospitalization. The longer they do these lockdowns, the more people will suffer. The answer to new outbreaks is not more lockdowns, but just using common sense, basic hygiene and learning to live with the virus.- 278 replies

SPONSORED WORK PERMIT- does it work?
SS1 replied to SCOTT FITZGERSLD's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Iglu is still taking on new employees, but they have distanced themselves from being an employer of 'freelancers' in Thailand. They have changed their business model slightly after rules got tighter and now focus on long term roles/projects with clients mainly in the area of software consulting.
