  1. The replies are mostly avoiding the question. I am talking specifically about issues where Thai and Western culture differ drastically.

An example, many Thais will not dare correct an elder/teacher who has made a mistake as this would cause them to lose face whereas in Western culture a pupil would be praised for correcting a teacher.

In Western culture, people do not get grovel/lower their bodies when they come in contact with those of a higher social status nor do those of a higher social status expect those of a lower status to grovel.

In their own personal lives many farang take the view that they are just a guest and thus should not question anything in Thailand and even if they can see through the hypocrisy they go along to get along... but with a child you now face the choice of whether or not your will indoctrinate them into this system or raise them to be free thinking.

I assume you are a westerner and you have to learn and deal with Thai culture. If I were in your position I would teach the child both ways and how to balance one against the other and respect both. To not make the child aware of western ways would be a disservice, but if they are going to live in Thailand they have to be able to function within the society. Your ability to absorb, rationalize, and balance between the two cultures will have a great effect in the impact on you children's ability to be multicultural. Your children will follow your example. IMHO Best wishes.

  2. "Prayuth has not revealed his plan for the make up of the Cabinet. But it was reported that most ministers would come from the inner circle of the junta.

His deputies are tipped to become deputy prime ministers and ministers, taking care of key ministries."

    Say no more.

Agree, big mistake. Means more of the same incompetence.

  3. David,

No matter which country or which school if you are not involved with your child's education they are at far greater risk of not learning. No school teaches common sense. Find out what the curriculum is at the surrounding schools and make a choice that way. Do the best you can, Book smarts are a huge asset, but some children are gifted with different talents. Top priority is to raise a well rounded person equipped to deal with life.

    Best wishes

  4. I mentioned she was a Brit because I am also a Brit hence I was able to recognize where she came from, a fellow country person, had I not been able to identify her nationality I would have merely said, a female. But as others have pointed out, I thought it was a useful descriptor, not meant to be derogatory or otherwise, just another piece of data that is known, useful or not. Ditto the fact she was blond, and the drink was a Smirnoff mix, both descriptive items intended to help build a picture, nothing against blonds or Smirnoff either. I hope all that is OK with all of you, if I'd known this was going to be a journalist master class I might have tried harder!

This behavior is becoming more and more prevalent among westerners. This time she/he was a Brit, next time take your pick..

  5. When i read on these boards about all the problems guys have with Thai women ,i just cannot understand why so many have a problem ,in 24 years i had 2 Thai girlfiends here and in the UK both were really nice and no problem at all ,we just broke up on good terms ,my wife is a little ,(not little she is quite tall) treasure ,hard working ,loving and has been a great mum ,both in the UK and here in Thailand . the only thing i can think is that either the guy is not the best partner or they came here on a two week holiday and fell in love with the first bar girl with no manners or education that they rogered. apart from that ,i know shit happens even to the best of us ,but those guys rarely write their experiences down .

And talking about the first girl they rogered ,i have an aquaintance coming back soon who has"fallen in love" he thinks she is back at the farm waiting for him ,in fact she is still in the bar ,and going to meet him at the airport and take him home ,question ,should i tell him? the wife says ,as he isnt a good friend let him make his own mistakes ,he wont thank you.rolleyes.gif

Oh ,to the op ,move on lifes to short.

If he is your friend you should tell him now so he can make up his mind about what he wants to do about it. If he still want to go for it at least you warned him.

Being a surrogate mother is not a evil thing, and bring compensated for it is not evil either.
The only evil part of this story is this couple dumping the twin with Down's syndrome. They were the driving force in the child's birth and should have accepted the responsibility for their actions bringing the child into the world. I feel sorry for the twin they took being raised but such an amoral couple of human effluence. Name them, shame them, and make them stand up and do what they agreed to do! And the the Australian authorities should monitor them for 21 years.

The saddest part is Down's syndrome children are usually totally good natured,
friendly and loving children. Who try hard to be a credit to their families.

My feeling is that you have been told one side of the story by the media whose only interest is sensationalism.

In reality, it probably went like this. The Aussie couple visited thai clinic about a surrogate baby. The Thai doctor promised, yes yes new healthy baby, just pay.

Then later they were told it was in fact twins - when they only wanted one. The Thai doctor then not wanting to lose face informed them the baby is healthy, but the second baby could be put for adoption if they did not want the one with down syndrome.

Ultimately, it was the Thai clinic that facilitated this.

It is the parents wanting to have a child and not being able to or wanting to produce a child on their own that facilitated this. You can not lay blame on others for the out come of your desires and you should not be able to escape responsibility for the children you create. I hope thoughts of Gammy haunt them enough to stand up and accept their responsibility.

  8. Pit bulls should be registered as a lethal weapon with the police...right after the owner secures 1 million baht liability insurance to protect innocent people from the disfigurement and death they are known to cause all over the world...you pit bull owners and lovers...take your  best shot...statistics are not on your side...sentimental barf does not count...

I've known PB that are good and bad. I really like your solution but 1 Mill is to low more like 3 Mill. That should solve most of the bad ownership problems which is where  the majority of the problem lies.

  9. OP,

22+ years from now who will take care of you in the States and how affordable a life style will you lead?  Life is full of the unknown. Who knows what things will be like in Thailand in 22+ years. Have a plan A, B, C... be flexible and adaptable. If your the type of person hamstrung by fear of the unknown perhaps living in a foreign land is not for you. Death and taxes are the only guarantees, do not let fear and ambivalence of the unknown crush you dreams. If you move to the LOS for a year and do not like it no one will stop you from leaving. You will be quite blessed if you live long enough face the issues your thinking about. Good luck with your decisions.
