With the exception of entrance fees to some attractions, I don't look at them that way.

There's always one price for people who know how to negotiate and another price for those who don't.  I get to decide what price I'm willing to pay.  Or I walk over to the next vendor and start negotiating again.  Sometimes, I go home empty handed.  But not often.  And so do locals.

Do your bargaining in the mornings - vendor is not always sure how business will go for the day and is willing to get sales early on. Later in day, if vendor has had a successful day then there is NO bargaining.

    Then reality strikes.

    The bill arrives.

    Aaaarghhhh -- I'm having a heart attack.....

(Bangkok Pattaya Hospital -- 2,300 baht to have my ears clean out -- twice as much as back home)

Back home my medical practice has no charge for that.

I have such a couple as direct door neighbours. Very nice people, and not the Tom isn't horrible.

Not so long ago I helped them with an issue they had with their pool pump.

After I finished they asked how much they owed me. I answered them that I didn't charge anything for neighbours, but when they insisted I said OK I wanna watch

The week after my doorbell rang, and when I opened the door, there was the Tom and his GF standing with a nice Tag Heuer for me.

Love your lateral thinking. More than one way to skin a cat, as the saying goes.

    Great idea and good luck.

When my wife and I moved over here from Australia, we brought a box full of the green "Woolies" bags and have used them until they passed their use-by date.

At first we got unusual looks and stares, but now around our local village we don't get a second glance when we refuse a plastic bag and just show our "brought from home " bag ready and willing.

Has it made an impact on other people in our village to do the same?......I don't think so.....we need to educate the kids, adults are too set in their ways.

    Cheers.

Good on you. But thinking of the old adage: You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink.

These issues need to have laws and enforcement to make them work. And when you think of the numerous laws in Thailand that are not rigorously enforced, then I can only wish you good luck. A country sometimes much beloved of talking but little action sadly.

    1) Gardens by the Bay

    2) Singapore Zoo

    3) Marina Bay - Boat Quay - Clarke Quay area

    4) sample some Singapore Chicken-Rice/Bak Ku Teh/Black Pepper Crab

Personally, I do not find Singapore to be that extraordinarily expensive.

A pint of beer at Raffles Hotel Courtyard Bar for $19 - maybe not "extraordinarily expensive" but not cheap either. Savoured on a hot day in June this year.

I've used Brita filters for years.  I like the water pitcher with the filter inside that fits nicely in the refrigerator. The water tastes great and the filter captures most heavy metals and more.

Really? About all they do is reduced a bad taste and smell to drinking water. And you can do that by exposing the water to air for a few hours. Chlorine will dissipate. Sorry to say, but that filter jug is about as useless as t*ts on a bull.

  7. Does anyone know if there are ever any reports of tiger attracts on hikers exploring the national parks. I would love to go hiking but am a little worried about that possibility.

    the chances are miniscule.

Always remember if you are with a friend - you only have to run slightly faster than them! gigglem.gif

  8. just don't try.

thais had their own bit of trouble with the vietnam incident.

ww2 happened 80 years ago, time to let go and focus on stuff happening today.

for you and me - involved or directly related to people involved, this might be different.

but why would a 35 year old thai be interested in adolf, winston and josef?

"but why would a 35 year old thai be interested in adolf, winston and josef?" They cannot or do not want to deal with their own political problems. Still very much a "medieval" society. Their education system apparently does not teach them to question or to enquire. It seems that many citizens have blinkers (as used on horses) on. Corruption and cronyism is their way of life, followed closely by mai pen rai. Sad really sad.png

  9. Joe1983: The ultimate decision must, of course, be yours. But ask yourself this - can I afford to lose all of my investment? There are many TV readers who have experience of "working/business" in Thailand, just heed their advice/warnings.

On a lighter note - Noah was the worlds greatest financier, he floated company when the rest of the world was in liquidation! There is your precedent?
