  1. Over the past few years the Royal League has negotiated with GV & Royal without much success. When times were good here, 2+ years ago, it was difficult for the RL to secure a good price and regular time with the mgrs of the above courses because of the many tour groups coming through.

Highlands owner came through for the group with a great price, secured t times, and always good service. We supported him, in low season, and he came thru for us.

To the poster concerning Ghymkhana. IMHO unless you are a member there the green fee for 18 is way to high for the condition of the course, green conditions, and overall maintenance.

I dropped my membership there recently. For years there has been talk of improvements, i.e. partnership with a hotel, etc, but to no avail.

  2. I have rented for the last 10 years at three different places in CM. All for around 6500-7000Bht. Check around the University. Like the Klong Rd.

I currently am paying 7000bht for a large 1 bdrm, 1 study, but a very small balcony. Slow season, economy down, bargains are out there. Matter of getting on the bike and hitting the leasing offices

  3. Just had to add my 2 bhat worth here :D

"Perfect Blend" is IMHO one of the best here in CM. And "yes" I can count the owner, Khun Wong, and his family good friends. So I'm biased :)

He had been in the mgmt/service end of the restaurant biz before. Did his homework on opening the coffee shop and happy to see it is a success.

  4. Just did a 'goggle' and it is the same club as in the movie!!

Looks good an dthe women are fantabulous!!!

I'll be there is a few weeks!

I was a member for a year. Cool place a couple of yrs ago now a little out of favor.

Going to cost you a elevated entrance fee if you are not a member. That includes a bottle. Mixes, ice, host charge (if you want some company at the table) and a charge for for a poo ying to party with you.

One night, even with membership with 3 other friends, we spent 20,000bht :-)

Great night. Left with a phone # of the ying that I partied with for 4 hrs. Turned out to be no good :o Georgeous girl though. Show and eye candy great.

Not a place to go alone IMHO. Bring your own party :D

  5. 2 days ago I was out shopping. When I arrived home my wife informed me that the local police had visited my home, some in plain clothes.

The plain clothes policemen asked some questions about me, left a form to fill in and requested that after I had completed the form, to either take to the local police station or the police will visit me again and collect the form.

We also discovered that the police had asked local people if they know of the addresses of other Farangs in the area.

All the questions on the form were in Thai and answers were expected to be written in Thai, so I asked my wife to assist me with the form.

    Questions on the form included:

Width of forehead, colour of skin, size of nose, size of ears, any distinguishing marks on body, body size, pitch of voice, height, hobbies, occupation, passport details, telephone number, plus a photo of myself.

Yesterday my wife and I decided to take the completed form to the police station. Once there the policeman that previously visited my home took us into his office for an interview. He could speak passable English and explained that in Chiang Mai there has been a substantial increase in crime against Farangs, such as theft, murders, muggings and vehicle theft. He said that the police are now going to keep a regular watch and contact with Farangs in my area, (near Chom Thong) not only for my own protection but also as a deterrent to curb drug dealing and crime especially since there has been a large increase in the amount of Burmese moving into the area. He also described the situation that due to the economic crisis, many Thai people are becoming desperate to acquire money and Farangs are obvious targets for resentment and crime.

The policeman concluded by giving us advice on how to secure our home and gave his contact details if we required help from them.

Although the policeman was at all times courteous, friendly and polite, he did show me, without my asking, the personal details of other Farangs in the area that had submitting their forms, as if suggesting because I am a Farang, that I should know all the other Farangs in my area. I explained that I do not know them, but the policeman still described their details to me on the forms.

I do not know if this is happening in other areas of Thailand and interested if anyone has had any similar experiences recently?

Truthfully this scares the hel_l out of me.

Agree with previous poster. VERY Big Brotherish.

If they knock on my door I may not answer

  6. I play at the Thung Hotel sports complex. You don't have to be a member and it is also 100 baht an hour. 2 courts there with AC. I would like to play with someone if they are interested.

Where is the "Thong Hotel" ??

  7. i'll be in chiang mai from xmas onwards for a couple of months or so. In an effort to keep fit (!) I would love a friendly game of squash sometime :-)

I would say i was an average / good player! Would prefer spontaneous games rather than organising clubs etc ..

Also i wouldnt mind getting involved in some 5 aside football ...if any goes on in CM ?

I'm up for squash. I'm not a high level competitive, but am handy with a racquet =P

PM me when you'd like a game. I haven't played in Thailand before though, so no idea about location or cost of courts and racquet hire at this time.

We play at Gymkhana 3-4X's a week. Big nights are Thursdays and Sunday afternoons about 4. All levels invited. Just friendlies.

The CM team is going to BKK next weekend for a match against one of the local Prep Schools which has been going on for 20 years. The ChiengMai Cup.

Professor Bob Malloy, at CM Uni, has been the driving force of local squash here in CM for 20 years. He is usually there on Sundays.

I am a former coach, Uni level, and will be in and out for the next few months. But am usually there nightly (If not golfing :-)) Again, we have all levels.

Hi, are these squash friendlies still going on or has the heat put people off ! Still thursday and sundays at 4pm? Alternatively if anybody would like a game this month please PM me . Thanks :-)

    Got to be,

As of 3 wks ago, I left town then, things have slowed down to a snails pace at the clubs squash courts. A few fellows have left town, our No 1 went back to the UK, and some have had to go off and make some money !! :-(

Show up on Tues, Thurs, at 5. Then Sunday at 4pm. Some guys will be around. We had our annual Chiang Mai vs British Club--BKK last month and we had 8 tourney ready ppl show. Ask Khun Noi, who runs the tennis and squash for some phone #'s

  8. Hello everybody,

I'm an european who would like to come to thailand this august to train. I know that august is a bad time, being the rain season, still I bet that there are places better than others.

Mind that I'm coming to Thailand just to train really hard, so I would like to avoid the sex tourist route or the most commercial places.... I dislike very much overcrowding, still I would like to have some good beaches nearby, since here in Italy I swim on a daily basis and I love it! Instead one thing I hate is pollution: I want to avoid it at any cost, I like to run, and running in polluted places is awful.

I searched on the web about thai climate but I've not been able to dig out that much... I want to avoid as much as possible the tropical heat, since it could really compromise my training. I thought rain come with heat, but reading climate statistic online I found that some places has more rain and less heat than others.... strange....

So what would you advice me? Where's the best climate to train in august? Is better in rainy places, or hot places? And how bad the rain is? Does it makes impossible to walk in the streets even afterwards?

    thank you for your time.

    Dear MM,

2 blocks from my condo in Chiang Mai is the "Lanna Muay Thai Boxing Camp (do an internet search) where there are a lot of farangs and Thais training everyday. They are out running 5 days a week on the road at 5AM. Then back to camp for training 2 hrs. Breakfast, then more training. Lunch, then more training. August. I don't know how they do it. Insanely hot even at 5-6AM. Bugs sure. Mosquitos at night, yes. Rain, yep lots of it. Want to get good ? Just do it.

  9. I have found a well equiped gym (about 3 mins walk from Phrom Phong BTS on Sukhamvit)..no pushy sales talk, nice location, pool, sauna, squash court ect,am looking for a buddy to join up at the price of 2000 bht each monthly fee if anyones interested....

    Ozzie,

    Let me see...

A 5-6 hr car ride to Sukh in BKK, a 1 1/2 workout, then the same ride back to CM. Seems like a long day. Not much time to get back to work :-)

  10. Hey guys, im visiting BKK in a few weeks and having watching the movie 'BKK dangerous' last night, the nightclub used there looks awsome!!! I just visited their website, and memebership starts at 10,000Baht - what the hel_l !!

Has any-one been there before and can share their experiences & can u just pay a One-off nightly entrance fee ?? Im not paying 10,000baht even if it is for a year ....

I was a member about 3 yrs ago. Discount on bottles and some other advantages. Unless you are a resident here wouldn't think it will be worth it.

Place is not as popular is it once was but still busy my friends tell me. And yes, there is a one night entry fee (was about 400bht at one time) then there is a charge for ice, time spent with the employees, bottle charge, and I have seen them hit visitors for tips infinitum. Good shows when I used to go.

  11. Some 6+ months ago I stumbled on a big shop selling mostly pictures, but also some thai/ethnic & colonial/retro artifacts, & decorative or household items. (I think you could also have a coffee there.) It was inside the moated city.

The place was a big (mainly) wood house, in good condition, on two floors - in fact two neighbouring & linked houses. It was obviously fairly new but built to a thai modern design by an architect of good taste. There was a wat directly in front. There were car parking places at the entrance and also across the road. The shop (and wat) were almost at the end of the soi.

I've been looking for it off and on for weeks now. If anyone reckons they can identify the place from my description and can pin down the location I'd be most grateful.

It isn't "Baan Thong U" is it ? Highlighted in last months CityLife Magazine.

  12. Yes.... the market is ripe now. Call NATTY at 089 430 8454

I just took a 4 bedroom in Kulapunvi... in the process i say many. from 15,000 - 30,000... various conditions. There is a huge 4 bedroom with a nice yard on Canal road... separate maid quarters. New... 25,000. She found me more than I could choose from :-)

    --Ashtonite

I would imagine she brokers condo's also ?

Yesterday they started construction out my back window on a new 8 story apt complex. Not high enough to ruin my view of Suthep but for the next 2 years I am not going to like the construction noise. Who does she work for ?

  13. Hi guys. Can anybody direct me to a website were I can check out the entry list for this upcoming event. I`ve tried numerous searches but am getting nowhere.

    Thanks in advance,

    Chang35baht.

    Dear Chang,

I was up there and played the course Monday & Tuesday. Just before Wed.'s Pro-Am

God, it was in great shape !! Should have taken a few pics of the boards they had up with start times, etc

  15. Having been told that such and such an item is available at such and such a market I thought it might be worth asking you all where all the local markets around Chiang Mai are located--places like 'Kad Luang', Wororot [ nr Police Station for parking fines :o ] [, Meuang Mai [ nr 'Tessabahn']--both in fact on the edge of the Ping--and then various others [Talad Nong Hoi on Saraphi, Lamphun road] and so on--can all you knowledgeable CM residents give details of any you are familiar with and, maybe, what they are useful for?? That is, if you don't think it's information too valuable to give to newcomers! :D

Last night went for the 1st time to : San Pa Koy Market. Very good food market. Lots on offer.

I went to the boxing stadium for the fights (Lanna Muy Thai boxers) then went to eat. In between the Super Hwy and

Nawarat Bridge. It's on the maps on this site.

  16. I was chatting to some American guys in the bar last night and they were keen to watch the game at Tuskers.

If I am guaranteed a minimum of 20 people and they all pay 150baht for a breakfast then I will happily open. But I do need the minimum numbers to make it worthwhile so if you are definitely up for watching it at Tuskers PM me and I will see what kind of numbers we get.

I will need to know by Wednesday at latest.

Hopefully we can get it on :o

I doubt it will be on ESPN. Thy have it listed on NBC exclusively. ESPN has pre-game stuff starting at 10AM.

Wikianswers.com has: Super Bowl XLIII (43) is scheduled for February 1, 2009 in Tampa, Florida.

Kick off is expected to be around 6:28 p.m. EST.

So if you can get it we would have to be there at 6:27 a.m. (Ouch ) If I am correct ?
