  1. Is it the one in Washington Square? If you enter from soi 22 and take the first left (which leads you down and around to the Dubliner) there are 3 bars in a row and I think one of those may be called 'Best Bar' or is it 'Happy Bar' or 'Good Fun' - it has some such unoriginal name.

That sounds the right sort of area - can anyone confirm - Bar inside Washington Square called "Best Bar"?

    Thanks!

No. No bar named "Best Bar" in WS. Maybe in PTTY, not in BKK.

  2. Hi Guys,

I played golf in University and ever since not. I liked it very much and wish to play again. Now there have been 2 courses named in the other golf thread, but as to my knowledge, there are many more courses in the vicinity of Chiang Mai. Can anyone suggest the best golf course for a beginner with no clubs and 'balls'? If something comes up I would be happy if other people would join in and maybe make a regular social event out of it? Beginners and/or advanced players, whatever the mix. So thanks for any suggestions and maybe see you on the green soon.

    beerlao :o

Cannot say how much I would reccomend beginning with an instructor/teacher. Go to Lanna GC. Nice driving range. Ask around for an instructor. There are 2-3 thai guys that are usually there. Try them all before you settle on one particular one. Take 4-5 lessons before you start off. Then go to one of the par 9's around town till you get the hang of things. Nothing more frustrating than going out, not playing well, that's when ppl give up on the game. :D

  3. Kor tod ka for the hissy fit.

I have had a peace pipe and have calmed down.

I just wanted to say that I can name, off hand, at least 20 members who earn much less a month than Polecat does and they are so far from being snobby it is unreal. The reason that they have all joined the club is because they believe in it and they want it to continue. After the floods, when we were - and are - fighting bankruptcy, so many member stepped in to help, sacrificing their time and money, and to call us all elitist and accuse us of having no sense of the community is just plain insulting - and as I said, misinformed.

Last point: the club is strugging. We need support, and to think that Polecat may have deterred just one person from joining is seriously galling and annoying to the extreme. Our accounts are available for viewing, our membership there to join and our club is open to interested parties. That is all I have to say on this subject, and I do apologise again for the tantrum.

The bottom line is that I love the club; it is a good thing. And when people attack it for no apparant reason, and harms it, I bristle.

    Licking my feathers...goodnight. PK (SJM)

I for one hope the club survives. We play squash there 2Xs p/week ,I play a bit more, and to see those courts being replaced by something else would hurt. The golf course was , to say the least---playable, but the history and ppl make the place. CM sixes are just one of the traditions there. To sit outside on a fine CM night, under those magnificent trees, having dinner and drinks, with good friends, after golf, squash, or tennis, is great !

  4. Missed the "Open" but am coming next week to play Santaburi and Waterford. Driving from CM. Used to stay at the Welcome but last time they wanted 1400Bht. Not worth it IMHO. Any else with any suggestions. I don't mind paying the 1400, or 16-1800 if the place is worth it.

  5. Any suggestions for getting a decent non-traditional massage in Chiangmai?

Depends on what U mean by "non-traditional. Extras ?? Or just an oil massage. For Op Naam Nuit Sayuri and Pandoras. For oil I go CM-Land Rd to Annies. 600Bht for 2 hr oil-aromatherapy. Nice rooms. All teak. No extras but good strong massage.

  6. A good friend gave me the name "Kajonsak". He said it meant world traveler or he who travels. I like it. Everyone in LOS uses it and even my Thai friends in the States call me that. Hope he wasn't having fun with me and it means something else !? :o

  7. What ever happened to the Las Vegas, around the back corner from the Prince?  Now that was one seedy establishment.

Still there I think. We drove on that road not too long ago but that was in the daytime. Looked like it was still active (not in disuse). My understanding is that the Las Vegas was the first "go-go" place in Chinag Mai, conviently located near the U.S. consulate and the military types. Just as the Prince Hotel was once one of the "best" hotels in Chiang Mai.

That would make sense as the Prince does have that old R&R charm as such standards as the Malaysia in Bangkok and it would have been the nicest hotel with a pool within walking distance of the US consulate, a real Air America hangout before my time. I did spend many an afternoon around the pool with the ladies with ol' Ai Mun serving the drinks.

These same ladies also ended up serving the beers and hot dogs at the US consulate's 4th of July party on the lawn where you could bump into all of the US expats in the region at once, including the missionaries. Nothing like having a cold Budweiser along side the governor of Chiang Mai while Chiang Mai's working girls were busy giggling.

The nak leng out front of the Las Vegas were some pretty scary Thai guys. It took me two years to summon up the courage to go inside where I ordered one beer, drank quickly, and then departed, never able to muster up the courage to go in again.

    2 years ! ?? :o

Not that scary. Went in a while ago with a CM newbie to show him the best and worst of CM. Actually had a fun couple of hours. Only one or two passable yings, but...

Then went to the Karaoke across the street where we bought a bottle of Song Sip and had a few of the ladies singing songs for us.

The Bunny Club has changed names. But no better venue than it has been in the last year , or so. Now 2 years ago it was a fun place ! But staff went down quickly with a few fulfilling theirs, and their parents, dream by marrying farangs and going to one of the choosen lands (UK, Scandanavia, or the US :D )

  8. ...as long as you don't swim in the algae pool. :o

I do believe the other you are talking about is Foxy Lady, Chanchao. Spotlight bigger and better IMO. Plenty of Karaoke joints around town but mainly catering to the Asian crowd. Best off hanging around Loi Kroh.

I have had some good nights in Foxy lady. Have to pick and choose your ying du jour carefully. But some fun ones in there. :D

  9. Anyone know any good venues for a little late night jazz ?

The following article from the BKK Post:

    "NORTHERN IMPROVISATION

Chiang Mai plays host to its own jazz jam sessions

    Pla Muk Yak

Food stalls served northern specialities amid cool jazz.

"Jazz Under a Lanna Sky" took place earlier this month at the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi.

What was absent was the northern chill _ and perhaps a few glasses of crisp red wine. Otherwise the nights were lively and the air moist with the improvisational riffs of Thai jazz players who entertained the guests of Chiang Mai's Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi hotel last weekend.

Seeing how Bangkok enjoys a slate of jazz gatherings all year long, Chiang Mai wishes to stake its claim as a city of refined tastes by having a jazzy jam session of its own. The "Jazz Under a Lanna Sky" took place December 3 and 4, under the crescent wintry moon on a vast lawn at Dhara Dhevi. The tall spectre of the hotel's exquisite, eye-popping Lanna-Baroque architecture played host to the assembly of local jazz artists like Koh Mr Saxman, Jennifer Kim, ETC band, Prod Thanapat, The Infinity, The Bangkok Connection and a few more familiar faces.

The concert was intended as a laid-back affair that nevertheless aimed to "play a part in promoting Chiang Mai tourism with new activities," according to Sun Suebsaeng, managing director of Dhara Dhevi. "This can also increase the liveliness of the season and give a stronger cultural atmosphere to the city."

How jazz could fit into Chiang Mai's unruffled charm remains to be judged in the long term. But if we equate the music with taste and sophistication, there would hardly be any place else in the northern city fit for a pleasant evening of popular jazz. Dhara Dhevi put a brightly-lit stage on its lawn _ symbolically a mini Sanam Luang _ behind which a delicately carved, stupa-like Lanna portal loomed with shadowy eminence. The audience could fix themselves on the rows of chairs sipping iced whisky (by the sponsors) or move towards the back and carve out their own niches with northern snacks and BBQ.

Prod Thanapat (right) trades solos with Acharn Teh.

Koh Mr Saxman (right) demonstrates why he's one of Thailand's top jazzmen.

Invited guests and paying visitors (500 baht entrance, or 1,000 with drinks) consisted largely of Chiang Mai bobos, the bourgeoise bohemians in casual suits and open-necked shirts (gentlemen) and diaphanous blouses with embroidered shawls (ladies). Everybody bemoaned the lack of cool wind that was supposed to wrap Chiang Mai in its nippy midst by this time of the year. But of course that's beyond the power of any organiser.

On December 3 Koh Mr Saxman squeezed out smooth melodies from his brass pipe until after midnight, with a little help from his friend guitarist Prod Thanapat. On December 4, the evening opened with a Chiang Mai outfit led by Acharn Teh, which became a friendly jam session with his other talented friends from the neighbourhood. The young musicians under the name ETC band, who've had their album released by GMM, next pumped out fiery fusion numbers, plus a few easy listening pop-jazz tunes. Then came the Bangkok International Big Band, before The Infinity and The Bangkok Connection, two indispensable outfits in nearly every jazz event, closed the festivities along with a fireworks display.

Fittingly, the ad lib spirit of these jazz players somehow matched the improvisational urges of the craftsmen who built Dhara Dhevi into a stunning abode of Orientalist fantasy. Thus at the end, it was the overall atmosphere that rendered the concert pleasing. Even though "Jazz Under a Lanna Sky" was a small and rather exclusive event, it should signify the readiness of Chiang Mai for other musical gatherings that will enliven this pretty northern city, with or without the chilly December wind.

  10. Dear CMF,

Have pent the last few years having a good dinner somewhere then hitting Loi Kroy for the nights festivities. Always bring a few bottles of bubbly with us to toast at midnight :o But this year have decided to spend it in "The Big Mango"'. Bigger venues and more ppl to party with. I am sure CM will be fun though wherever U decide to go.

  11. I cannot see the pic on my 'puter. But if it is the one I am thinking of it is at the International School. Out by the Airport & Central Shopping Cntr. We used to play squash out there (5 great courts till they varnished the floors :o ). It was a sport club then. The school took over about 2-3 years ago. Heard you could use them for a while, through a membership, but now cannot. Maybe some one else has better info.

  12. I volunteer for an emergency service center used by several insurance companies. Goal is to have someone on the ground to go meet people who experience some incident or accident while on holiday. This doesn't happen a lot, I'm asked to go see someone on average just once a year or so. Mostly it's medical cases, people getting a heart attack while on holiday and suchlike. Living in Chiang Mai, I'm often able to tell them what the best/easiest way is to go about things, perhaps translate where needed and generally help them get back on their feet.

Anyway yesterday I was asked to go see an older male tourist travelling through Thailand. He'd already seen the sights in Bangkok, went to Ayudthaya, now Chiang Mai where he was particulary interested in shopping at the Night Bazar, then planned to go on to Chiang Rai. Typical vanilla-vanilla tourist itinerary.

On his way back from the Night Bazar to his hotel (Winner Inn) last Friday at around 11pm, he was attacked and robbed in the road/soi close to his hotel. Hit from behind, held on to his bag, then hit (repeatedly?) in the face requiring surgery. He's still in hospital but recovering.

First aid people were very good, initial police response was very good, he was transported to Chiang Mai Ram hospital which is of course very very good and really the very best place to go especially if you have insurance.

Then on Saturday, next day after the event while still feeling upset and groggy from surgery, a different policeman comes to visit by himself, says his name is 'Tony' and from what I understand lays on this disgusting fake-jovial Thai police-dude thing ('you my friend' etc, etc) then after that proceeds to search his belongings and ask insinuating questiosn. He checked for 'hairs' on his jacket, repeatedly counted the 1400 baht he had left, (which was ALL he had left, passport, lost, ATM card lost, etc.), goes through his medications, even went so far as to take some glucose pill and licking it to check it out (the guy has diabetes too), asking if he went with prostitutes, so overall insanely intimidating behaviour. At this point the guy was wondering if he should just give the policeman some money, but witht the 1400 baht being all he had left (cash/ATM card all gone) he just couldn't do so. He's now scared to go to the police station just to make up the statement he needs to take to the embassy to get a replacement passport!

I guess this was exactly what this lone police guy was looking for: Pray on an innocent crime victim, shake the tree a little and see if some money falls out. I'm very very pissed off at this, perhaps more so than at the robbery itself which can happen in any city in the world.. Yet rogue Thai police is apparently very much a problem still, also in Chiang Mai.

I'm checking where I can go with a complaint on this. (Any thoughts?)

    Chiang Mai's finest, indeed.  :o

    Jeezus Ch, :D

Bad stuff. And in CM. You did not mention his nationality. Maybe a visit to his embassy, consulate, in CM, with their advice. Tough to go to the policemens superiors. They may be of no use.

Surprised by the assault ! BKK, PTTY, but here in CM ???? Guess so, but will make me a bit more wary at night :D

  13. About 3 weeks ago driving down the Soi past Rimping Market on CM-Lamphun Rd noticed a new place. Anybody know anything about it. They seemed to be getting ready, that night, for a well know singer coming. Big banner, in Thai, and lots of ppl milling about. Never got a chance to go back and check it out. And won't be back in town till December.

  14. Have a good friend that has done a similar thing living in BKK. A MP3 writer that use to work for Digital in the US. Tried living in BKK for 3 months, set up all his broadband connections, got himself an apt, and it was smooth enough he moved lock, stock, and barrel immedietly thereafter. Writes from home, pkg's it in bundles, then sends the programs to a partner in the US that sells it for him. Judging by his new 7 mil bhat condo on Sukh. he is doing VERY well. :o

  15. " Huay Kaew road, the four-lane road linking the foot of Doi Suthep mountain to the city’s heart, will be expanded to six lanes next year, he said."

I live at the top of the road. Trying to drive down now is a nightmare sometimes. I can imagine when they start the roadwork :o

  16. We are going back to BKK for Christmas and wondering where we can get a nice Christmas dinner.  It would be nice if it's on BTS route or not so far off but it doesn't really matter.  Any recommendations would be appreciated.

One of the popular spots is "Bourbon Street Restaurant" Washington SQ, Sukh Soi 22. Have been going for the last few years. 600Bht I believe this year for some pretty good traditional fare.

  17. As far as the golf goes the Gymknana (spelt wrong I know, but thats how it should be spelt) Club offers very reasonably priced rounds, I think is probably the cheapest club in town. Only 9 holes but its OK

But is the Gymkhana open..heard that it closed down..Cheers

The GYMKHANA Club was under a metre or 2 of water recently and heavily damaged. If it is open it is a flat 9 hole course with plenty of water hazards. Used to have very hard greens. It is the second oldest golf course in the Kingdom.

There are numerous world class courses in the CM area including Lampang Golf and Country Club at Sankampaeng (where the SE Asian Games golf was held), Royal Chiang Mai at Mae Jo, Green Valley on the Mae Rim road. All reasonably priced. There are also a number of courses in Chiang Rai including Waterford and Santaburi.

    Enjoy.

    Gymkhana is CLOSED :o

  18. Chiang Mai is a nice place, but it depends what you are after. It is not like Pattaya, and if it's the nightlife that you enjoy in Pattaya, and that's important to you, then you'll find Chiang Mai tame in comparison. Personally i far prefer Chiang Mai, but each to their own.

    Second that :D

I live in CM, but go to PTTY to really party. Pretty tame up here in comparison. But we like it that way :o

Depends upon your age, disposition, hobbies, etc..

  19. Hurrah! After 12 years in Bangkok I have finally arrived in Chiang Mai. Logistically speaking, it was the biggest move I have ever made. Wife, kiddie, two dogs, and a truckload of stuff needed to be moved to Chiang Mai. The latter was the easiest.

I want to say thanks to everyone who helped with advice and tips, especially p1p, jackr, SansaiSam, Steve, and meedish_sweetball. All of us –including the two dogs– enjoyed our first few days in our San Sai Moo Baan.

From our new home we have a lake/mountain view and lots of green. The only thing we hear in this place are dogs, birds, and the occasional car (traffic = 5 cars per hour, Walls ice cream cart included).

Coming from a congested part of Bangkok with heat, pollution, noise, and a 30-storey condo springing up in the neighbour’s garden that’s a big change and it is also a big relieve.

I have found our new home through the Chiangmai House Agency (www.chiangmaihouse.com). They did a great job and they know what farangs expect. I can really recommend them. Likewise, our moving company, Wiwattana Co., Ltd. of Bangkok, did a very professional packing and moving job for under 20k. Big thanks to them, too.

    Cheers, X-Pat

Welcome to CM ! And thanks for the realtor info. Never know when it can be used

  20. Riverside is the restaurant/bar isn't it?  Part of it is open air I think?

That wasn't the one I was describing.

My geography of Chiang Mai isn't so great, but it was about 10mins from the town centre.

The cool bar I went to had big glass windows looking out to the garden, a small bar next to the band area.

I think I remember a lot of blue/green lights, and the toilet area had low walls at the urinals/wash basins.

Sounds like "Song Saleung " to me. Out west on Canal Rd. :o

  21.       I was told it was 4-500Bht ST. Rooms pretty dingy. All

second-hand info I am afraid. No 1st hand experience there.

I am surprised to hear that in the 20 years since I was last

entertained in a ST room, that dinginess is no longer mandatory. Out

of curiosity, which establishment with such facilities has done away

with the ubiquitous dinginess? Wouldn't a well kept room sort of detract from

what is, after all, the sought after seedy yet pleasurable experience? And I thought one

could get a first hand experience at the table without going to

a room. Some people are just too shy. :o

The quote of "pretty dingy" was the Aussie's. Not mine :D

My recent dinginess have included Lone Staar Saloon, Washington Sq. Moonshine Joint, Soi Cowboy. And the ever dingy Soi 6 (various establishments) Pattaya.

All within the last 2 weeks. In CM my own place is "dingy" enough :D

  22. I was driving on a street parallel to Hauy Kaew and noticed a block of beer bars (6 to 10 of them) one said A Go Go but there was no dancing.  I could only see Thai or Nippon men in attendance.  Anyone ever been there?  Safe for Farang?  These were only a few blocks away from The Chiang Mai Orchid.

Had a fellow tell me a few years about about these places. Thai oriented. But he, and a few fellow Aussies, went there on occasion for ST's. Cheap beers, and cheap ***. Never had the inkling to check them out. But maybe someday... :o

Yeah..cheap beers, food as well, sometimes they dont have english written menu..

Cheap ***??? not so sure about it? You know anything about this?

I was told it was 4-500Bht ST. Rooms pretty dingy. All second-hand info I am afraid. No 1st hand experience there.
