  1. Hey

arriving in Cm sat afternoon for a 5 day visit.

id like to play some golf but going alone kinda sucks so does anyone know any golg=fers hangouts etc.. where i can meet some people to go play a round/

    thanks

Good info by the previous poster. But if you do not want to start out at 7am. You can e-mail these guys and join with them

  2. I think it was just a failure from the staff in explaining to the OP beforehand that the price has gone up by 20 Baht and not changed in the menu as yet. Probably not done deliberately as a scam.

Agree wholeheartedly with JxP that it is no reason for coming on to a public forum like this and degrading anybody's business like that, especially when everyone is trying hard to survive in this "not so good" business climate.

Have to agree with the majority of posters here and tb. Not the staff's fault. Mgmt, yes. Staff, no

Been a member here for yrs. Not using the place much these days just because of mis-management.

Nothing being done to improve the place even though they have had chances. Approached by various area

restaurants to take over operations have gone nowhere. Approached by a local golf pro to take over the course and driving range were met with a ridiculous price to lease. Negotiations to partner/lease land to a hotel group has stalled.

A wonderful location and property. Could be a jewel of CM. But mgmt doing nothing

  3. Fusion is thermonuclear. New Mexican food served with radioactive chiles. Japanese food from Hiroshima.

Mi Casa, Su Casa, La Casa. Which side of the long klong road?

1/2 click from Hotel Phucome & Dunkin Donuts --North

  4. Live next door and they have been working the last week, or so, on the interior. Today putting up nice, bright sign, "Farang" Thai/Western fusion cusine.

Why does the word fusion scare me ! :-)

I have eaten at a few places in BKK and the west that have tried this. Have yet to had a good experience with it !

  5. Hi there

I know alot of people will probably be judgemental regarding thism but here goes, I wont go into all the detail but summarise the maini points.

I met a Thai girl online, who happens to provide an escort service. That was the initial intention, but then we got to like one another during the 2 weeks I spent with her. Shes educated and used to have a decent job, but allegedly used the internet after breaking up with her cheating boyfriend, shes 31 by the way. She told me her rate and I said it was quite expensive so I made her an offer , she said she would see when she meets me, was quite fussy about what I looked like etc.

At the end of the holiday she didnt ask for any money and appeared (even found money in the hotel and gave it to me) to be enjoying my company as I am a similar age to her and we got on very well sexually and personality wise, we even had a few arguments like boyfriend and girlfriend do, this had never happend to her before when meeting clients it was a more professional basis. I was ill and she looked after me, she seemed to care filling my plate when it was empty and glass etc. She even paid for some of the meal we had one day. Im going back in December and she wants me to visit her place where she grew up (maybe family). I have also spoken to one of her cousins (female) who saked me about myself and what I did.

She tells me she has no children and is quite open with me. By the way I dont find it difficult to attract women back here in Europe, so we seem a good match together.

I know that she still does her job and Im fine with that, but Im not sure if Im just another client or if this is genuine (afterall she is a sort of escort), its 50/50 in my gut. We communicate now and again on MSN and email and text almost every day.

    "Am I Being Played?"

Are we the readers being played ?? :-)

OK, I'll bite. Sit back, take a deep breath, think with the big head, and then come back.

Crazier things have worked, but not many

    GIG

  6. I was sitting at a vendor last night, around Thapae, having dinner (10pm) when they were working on them.

As the guy was putting them down, 2 minutes later, a pick up truck that held another employee drove right over

the new lines and screwed them up :-(

Will drivers pay attention to them. I don't think so. And I will not risk my life, when riding my bike, to find out. Just MHO

  7. La Gondola also took a serious look at Gymkhana, to take over the food business there, but that did not work out. That was unfortunate because the Gymkhana is really lacking in all but Thai cooking (and there with only somewhat limited success).

If any other restaurateur would like to give it a go, then by all means, contact Gymkhana! Perhaps a lesson was learned from the first experience with La Gondola. There is good business to be had there, if presented properly.

By the way, someone who is interested should understand that a menu must include offerings of Thai (several offerings), European and some Japanese and Korean dishes. A golf club that attracts people from all sorts of places must cater to them; it can not succeed as an "Italian" restaurant, a "French" restaurant, a sushi bar, or a Korean noodle shop.

Talking of Gymkahana, I see that they have a sign up advertising land for rent. What's that all about?

There is a large corner plot there (right on the intersection --- the "TREE" --- near the entrance of the club) that is a prime possibility for appropriate commercial exploitation.

I thought the club was in negotiation with a hotel chain to rent the property to develop it ?

  8. Thanlks for that.I meant 9000-10000 baht.

Can't help, except to warn that friends who have tried living in condos near the university say that noise from neighbouring students (not just occasional parties but all the time) has put them off for keeps.

And often difficult to park in your own place thanks to the cars and bikes of the students many 'guests'!

I bought a place at Hill Park Condos III about 5 yrs ago. True many students. But really very quiet. Parking, for cars, can be quite challenging :-), but overall it is a good place. Also Hill Park I is quite nice. Plenty of rents in that range and cheaper. Headed towards Doi Suthep and the Uni take a right on Klang Rd. Opp Duncan Donuts. 1st big condos on the left. Hill Park 1 right behind it. Also I heard the condos behind Duncan Donuts is quite nice

  9. The shortest and quickest way I have found is Chiangmai-Lampang-Denchai-Uttaradit (all on Highway 11).

Heading south from Uttaradit, there is an intersection with traffic lights with a right turn to Tron and left to Thong Saen Khan. Turn left and follow the signs to Chatrakarn and the Nakhon Thai. Turn left at Nakhon Thai and head towards Dan Sai. There is another intersection there where you head towards Phu Rua. If you can read Thai, there is a turnoff to the right after Phu Rua which takes you to Wang Saphung. If you miss it, go to Loei and turn right on Highway 201 to Wang Saphung. Follow the signs at Wang Saphung (left turn if coming from Loei) and go to Nong Bua Lamphu and then Udorn.

I've done it in 7 hours from Chiangmai but was young and silly and driving a car with a 4 litre engine.

Thanks for the directions. As the OP I too am making that trip in a week or 2. But I was thinking about breaking it up by stopping in Loei for the night. 5 years ago went through but didn't stop. Anyone know of any good spots to stop in and around Loei ?

  10. Anyone up for a game? I play fairly well, just for fun at Gymkhana, and would like to know a few people who I could call now and then for squash in the afternoons or weekends... Anyone? Thanks :o

We play every Thurs and Sat, Sunday on a pretty regular basis. I am out of the country for the next 2 weeks but you will find standards of all kinds those days at approx 5-5:50pm. By hight standard do you mean county level ?? A few fellows will give you a game then.

  11. Greetings! :-)

I haven't seen any evidence of it via Google searches, but with all of the real estate development over the past few years throughout the Kingdom.....have there been any high end serviced apartments (with fitness, ADSL, etc.) built in Chiang Mai?

What's the most high end serviced apartment there that you know of?

    CHEERS!

    D

I play golf at GCGC every Wed with the developer of www.thepunna.com

Very, very, nice gentleman reared in CM who has been in the real estate game for a while. He is pushing me hard to buy one of his units :-) He has brought his son, who worked in Calif., USA in the same biz also, and his daughter, western educated, to sell, develop, and be his right hand.

But I am undecided because of a few things. Nimmanhaemin Road is getting very busy ! The traffic getting out of the Soi can be horrible. If you go the other way, towards Canal Rd, it is one way, with the turn around a long way away.

Secondly are the night clubs directly behind the place. Not only Tawadang Music Club but the 2-3 others that have opened up. He claims there leases run out soon but we shall see. I brought up the nighttime noise level, during our round this week, and he said they are building a large, tall wall to keep the music out. But noise travels UP ! not only around.

He has sold a lot of units so far to Japanese, Chinese, and retired Bangkokians.

  12. Dear KF,

Guess it depends who you are going to market to. Asian market or farang ??

A few fellows over the yrs, I have know, have tried it. 2 Aussies, an English man. Then there are endless Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean, and a few Chinese. This yr I noticed a lot less Korean and Taiwan pkg tours. Rumor was they were going to Mission Hills, Shanghai, and a few other Chinese courses with better rates and easier start times. Can be done. Fewer courses up here. Although more opening these days. Highlands GC has helped. Takes pressure off Lanna, Green Valley, and R C G C.

During high season you are going to compete with established operators for t times. I am a member of 2 of the mentioned courses and during the high season sometimes have to tee off at 6am to even get on

    :-(

  13. Are you sure you didn't play Kirimaya? It has the mockup in the clubhouse. Anyway stayed there a couple weeks ago. About 9,000 baht for one night's stay with golf for two. Green fee is 3,500 I think with mandatory 600 baht carts per person plus 400 caddy. It was pricey but really nice course with great nature views on every hole. Top notch bird life! If you are looking for a splurge, go. If you are looking for a fantastic value, well I'd go somewhere cheaper.

Wow ! that's pretty expensive for the Kao Yai area. Guess since ex-PM Taskin named the place an economic zone the prices have gone up. I have heard the price of real estate has skyrocketed there also

  14. We play Bangkok Royal or Chuen Chuan every Wednesday morning, nary a soul to be seen. Played Royal Lakeside today and not particularly busy.

The word we got , from one tour operator, was that many Taiwanese, Koreans, Japanese, and Chinese, opted to go to courses in China. Such as Mission Hills. Cold there though outside Shanghai. Pricing was good to get big groups there.

In the last 2 weeks my buds and I have played Phoniex(sp), Ptty CC, Khao Kaeow, Burpra, Bangphra, and Green Valley. If you call a week ahead you can get a time. Otherwise, I believe, it is hit and miss.

  15. i'll be in chiang mai from xmas onwards for a couple of months or so. In an effort to keep fit (!) I would love a friendly game of squash sometime :-)

I would say i was an average / good player! Would prefer spontaneous games rather than organising clubs etc ..

Also i wouldnt mind getting involved in some 5 aside football ...if any goes on in CM ?

I'm up for squash. I'm not a high level competitive, but am handy with a racquet =P

PM me when you'd like a game. I haven't played in Thailand before though, so no idea about location or cost of courts and racquet hire at this time.

We play at Gymkhana 3-4X's a week. Big nights are Thursdays and Sunday afternoons about 4. All levels invited. Just friendlies.

The CM team is going to BKK next weekend for a match against one of the local Prep Schools which has been going on for 20 years. The ChiengMai Cup.

Professor Bob Malloy, at CM Uni, has been the driving force of local squash here in CM for 20 years. He is usually there on Sundays.

I am a former coach, Uni level, and will be in and out for the next few months. But am usually there nightly (If not golfing :-)) Again, we have all levels.

  16. Usually find a spot to park undercover round at the side of the Dun 2 Wan...... :o

    Re the market moving.......wheres ...errr.fattys?

    To Puwa,

There used to be a restaurant at the far end of the market, on the right corner next to the exit, called Saep Ubon, which had excellent Isaan food, perhaps the best in town. Last I saw it had closed down. Does anyone if it has simply moved to a new location? It was so popular that I can hardly imagine that the business folded.

Used to go there with the GF and she talked to them before closing they did not have plans to reopen anywhere. Try "Pratunam" ( I believe pasaat Thai for Diamond) on the Super Hwy. Sign ,only in Thai, past CM Land Rd, before you get to the river. Great food, Isaan, great prices.

  17. Hi All

Been in Chiang Mai for quite a while now and I do enjoy a good massage. I do tend to prefer the Oil Massage as compared to the Thai Massage.

Interested to know of some good places in and around town that other people have good experiences.

    Regards

    JT

Haven't been in about 2 months though...

It has been there 2+ yrs.

Coming south on Chan Klan Rd turn right on Chiang Mai Land Rd. Down approx 1/4 kl on right. Annies Massage. Yellow sign (in thai) next to one of the Karaokes. VERY professional. Nice rooms, all teak, aromatic oils, 2 hrs---700bht. Best I have found.

  18. Mandalay has a cover charge for foreigners and a farang menu and thai drink menu. The farang menu lists every drink at 300+; management making the bill calculation easy for farang.

Other discos not mentioned are Rodeo and ID4.

i went to mandalay during songkran,i remember i had a heineken beer, and got charged just over a hundred baht!

god knows how you got charged over 300baht,that really is taking the p*ss!

if this goes on it is a total disgrace

"Other discos not mentioned are Rodeo and ID4."

    Where are these places ??

  19. You could have saved yr computer for a small amount, but it's too late now. Install a spyware program with an email function, if anyone uses yr computer without formatting the drives first, copies of any emails they send or receive will also be sent to you.

That wouldn't have stopped the computer being stolen, and I had PC Anywhere installed, so that I can remotely access it...Nothing.....

    Dear mm,

Sorry to hear about the loss. Will be on the look out for the jacket in my travels

well i am farang, and me and my friends never got charged 300+!

only 100 baht or so per drink.

if most people pay 300 or so.thats more expensive than i pay in leeds or even london!

    £5 a beer in thailand.lol

Went to Mandalay when it first opened and got charged the cover and the $$$$ beer price. Went a few weeks ago thinking they must have changed the farang overpricing. No they had NOT. Never again. :o
