Must be a slow news day!

10 or so years ago I needed to be collected from a local train station, where I planned to drop my motorbike off for something later that day. Instead of trying to find, waiting for, or giving business to the win riders near the train station, I invited a guy from my local rank to follow me and pick me up. Therefore making directions back really simple, and keeping the business as local as possible. The <deleted> wanted to charge me double, because he had to ride there and back... claiming that he was unable to earn any (other) money in either direction.

That was the last time I every gave him any business! ????

Double fare for double journey seems right to me.

I have never seen a woman any where in Isaan terrified of westerners.

    Fascinated? Yes. Terrified? No.

I am wondering why, for the most part, police checkpoints are only staffed until midday.

I've only encountered one cop I could say was bent, in a minor way. Fined me 200 baht for going up a one-way street the wrong way, while ignoring several Thais doing the same thing. He suggested it would save me the trouble of going to the police station.

I thought fair enough, it would have cost me a lot more in Oz.

they do that all the time here. Walk in our front gate and help themselves to mangos when they are in season or walk down to the back yard, all of which are fenced off and help themselves to whatever might be growing at the time, e,g, lettuce, chilli, pumpkins, sweet potato, bananas. Took me a while to get used to it, but that's what they do.

One quality I love about Thais is their ability to share food with anyone and everyone with no expectations. Meanwhile westerners tend to keep a mental tally of everything that is owed to them.

  5. Thanks to all the diligent research being done. I have a question for all or any here. My biggest concern, is the use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. I know that Thai farmers like the stuff.

So a test of purity for me is the ash. Can you folks tell me when giving a critique on a certain product, if the ash you get is black and chunky or white to light gray. I like to know what I'm ingesting.

    Thanks in advance.
