  1. I recall ANZ card holders (maybe Platinum, not sure) were similarly covered but, if memory serves me correctly, you needed to have purchased a return ticket using the card.

The earlier advice to read the small print is the best advice. If you are still in doubt, ask the insurer - a written confirmation that you're covered would be compelling - please keep us posted.

It was "lent" by way of agreeing to payment terms of 30 days net on goods purchased, and we only gave credit to corporate entities, which I thought provided some security. There was no interest charged provided payment was made in full within 30 days. When this company failed to make payment within 60 days we instigated legal proceedings, it went to court and we won. They made a request to the court that they be allowed to pay off the debt 5,000 per month and the court agreed, subject to interest of 1.5% per month for all overdue amounts. We weren't asked if that was OK with us. When they defaulted on those monthly payments we went back to the court and they issued a court order stating that they should pay us what was owed or else any assets they owned could be seized and auctioned. So with the court order in hand we were able to identify this land that they owned it looked like it would all work out OK for us in the end... until we found out about this 15m mortgage.

Thanks for that explanation - and apologies for any offence.  You now have my sympathy but, unfortunately, you can't bank that either.

Are there any assets of the partners that are not encumbered?

Needless to say, unless you can recover legal costs, there may come a time when you write this off to the risk of doing business in a developing country. Good luck.

The only advantage I could see for the marriage visa is the 400,000 versus 800,000 baht in the bank. Like many things here in Thailand, I can't see the logic for retirement needing more money. Apparently they think that two can live cheaper than one.

Agree this seems illogical and has been raised before but I've never seen an answer. Is there one?

For a $10,000 transfer the bank would probably beat both of them, even after banks fees.

What rate can you get and what bank fees would you pay? Every time (20 - 30) I've done the comparison BahtSmart comes out well in front of Bangkok Bank & Citibank. Help us with some numbers to back up your opinion, please.

I use bahtsmart for small amounts ($500 to $5000) no fee,and use OFX for larger amounts over $10,000 no fee. 3 to 4 days to arrive at my Bangkok Bank acc no problems at all :)

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect

Good one!! Your 10K (AUD) gets 267,048THB from OFX compared with BahtSmart's 259,936THB. A very significant difference. Thanks.

I too have used transfer wise  and am really happy with them. they asked me a few questions the first time around until i explained that the account i was sending to was my wife's, then they've been good ever since ( i think the  coming from the USA the  government checks are quite stringent).

what i've found is.... you will not get a better exchange rate! It can take a week for the transfer to complete( but some of that I think is a hold up at the Thai bank end). Up to $5K US you can have the money automatically withdrawn from your bank account and wired to the receiving bank account, very convenient!.

I just checked TransferWise site and sending $1000 AU today would cost $14.95 AU in Fees and the recipient would receive  26,328.32 Baht

    cheers

The current BahtSmart rate is 25.9609 so your 1,014.95 AUD would see 26,349 THB in the recipient account (no fees).

What did dr Nu from Dental clinic do for you and why are you so happy with him / her ?

Impressive from go to whoa: Pleasant reception, minimal admin, Dr Nu (he) explained options and procedures clearly and in good English, assistant was obviously competent, subsequent appointments commenced on time, crown guaranteed 5 years, prices reasonable.

  8. I have used Iflix (but not Netflix). It was good value for a few months. After that, I found a lack of quality movies being  added - despite their frequent emails to the contrary. I'm not a fan of TV series but they did seen to offer a wide selection.

So, if you chose to try Iflix, I strongly recommend you pay monthly (was only 100B) not annually.

  9. My neighbor (a non-member of TV) will soon depart his rented condo at Unicca, South Pattaya. His condo is privately owned but the rental is managed by the condo management which holds the rental bond. There is a dispute between the renter and management and withholding a portion of the bond is being threatened,

Is there a rental authority that mediates such disputes, please? (The name of the owner is unknown.)

Take a look at that room and tell me why you think it was murder and not suicide?

That guys life is worth jumping out  a window for...although I never understand the decision to not just OD on pills after a night of boozing it up.

    Painless, no mess.

There is an assumption here that "pills" that bring about a peaceful death are readily available in Thailand; and I doubt that is the case. Even if they are available, the extraordinarily high incidence of "jumping" suicides  indicates the information is little known. Mr Mahlendorf's case is particularly gruesome and heart-wrenching.

I am surprised that the right to a peaceful death is not more widely discussed on TV given the apparently high number of elderly members. Organizations such as Exit International and Dying With Dignity are shedding much needed light on the issue.
