  1. 1. thai doctor with a farang?

    2. goes to look at houses wearing a doctor kit instead of just taking off the doctor coat? I mean, what exactly are you talking about when you say she was dressed like a doctor? how do doctors dress? last i checked they wear regular clothing and then put on a white robe that is removed before leaving the hospital????

    3. first you say wife then change to say gf?

    4. you and her share a huge uncontrollable laugh at the frivilous demand... seems most thais would never react this way no matter how stupid something somebody says was to them.

    5. why would a thai doctor be looking to rent a home and be looking at homes that are uninspiring?

I would say that your story sounds like complete bull shit.

Either you know nothing about Thailand or you pretend you don't.

  2. You're totally right. Both about treatment in Thailand and the reception you'll get when the saffron colored glasses crowd wakes up and start telling you to relax and enjoy life and smell and the roses and blah blah blah.

There's a lot of countries besides Thailand that are as nice or better. Really there are. When you go there you'll think 'why the hell did I waste so many years in a place that hated me.'

Places where you can own land in your own name. Places where you really can just show up and stay as long as you want with no hassle.

Really though, it was better ten years ago. It was cheaper, I was younger and you could do visa runs to your heart's content. I did hundreds of them.

It's no better nor worse than any place you might settle in for a decade or more. If you're bored and unhappy, don't blame it on Thailand.

"...you could do visa runs to your heart's content. I did hundreds of them."

And like most self-indulgent people, the consequences of your behavior, for yourself and others, is a total mystery.

"You're totally right. Both about treatment in Thailand and the reception you'll get when the saffron colored glasses crowd wakes up and start telling you to relax and enjoy life and smell and the roses and blah blah blah."

The ones wearing the saffron colored glasses were the naive first-time-away-from-home crowd who thought they were settling in paradise. Now that reality has sunk in they realize that if they were bored and unhappy in one place, they'll be just as bored and unhappy everywhere because the boring & unhappy follows them wherever they go.

Those of us who are reasonably happy with life in Thailand saw clearly what life here would be like and have been happy with the good & not-so-good because it was pretty much as expected. The whiners and moaners simply reached new levels in whining and moaning once the saffron colored glasses fell away and they had to face the fact it wasn't Thailand but them that was lacking.

No don't relax and enjoy life "and smell and roses" (whatever that means) because you're going to be throwing a hissy fit wherever you are and no one will miss you if you take your tantrum to greener pastures.

Suradit69, Every time I see you posting is to write a long rant to try to demeanor other TV posters. Go read a book or have a drink, whatever that suits you better.

  3. "At present, 4,164 graduates work in their native provinces and 5,903 others are still studying."

Perhaps the 4,164 graduates need to get back to studying. I went to my local rural hospital after I fractured my ulna near the elbow. It was caused by being driven off the road by a pick up truck, while I was on my bicycle (That's another story about being qualified for the activity one is performing),

Anyway, I had to point out the fracture on the x-ray to the doctor and technician. The doctor set my cast, which crumbled in 2 days. I came back and mentioned that perhaps she needed to put more padding around my arm to absorb the moisture and thus keep the plaster dry. She told me that it wasn't the fault of the cast, but that.....Ready for this folks....farang arms are different than Asian arms and I needed a special type of plaster and would have to go to the closest big city hospital.

I went to another doctor in the hospital and he added the extra padding and the cast lasted for the 6 week duration it took for the fracture to heal.

Hopefully, the next headline will read: "Qualified Doctors Are Graduating And Providing Adequate Care in Rural Areas".

Was you doctor part of this program? I doubt it very seriously. Shut yer wingeing yap and go pay western prices if you dare.

There is no point in being so hateful replying the guy.

  4. JoePai post # 3

Oh dear more holidays - do they not think of the work lost ................

So you think working a 10-12 hour day for 6 days a week for around 30 baht an hour is a breeze do you?

Do you work under those conditions for that salary?

Perhaps in reality the average Thai employee might just like or in fact deserve a bit more recovery time.

What about the Thai costumers and the Thai business owners? They are also Thai and are affected as well. The society works as whole.

Now, if this holiday is good or not is another issue.

  5. Most mentioned are "replicas" of what international schools should be. Managed by Thais and attempting to be different from local Thai school.

As far as I am concerned, there is only 3 true international schools in Thailand. ISB ranks the top, RIS the second, third one I forgot as it's been a while. But definitely not those mentioned above.

The curriculum consists mainly of international courses, with high school including IB programs and AP programs which is college equivalent courses. Most graduating students easily get into the top universities and colleges around the world, Harvard, Stanford, UBC, UCLA, and so on. Don't even need to mention thai universities. As much as I hate to say it, it's a guaranteed free pass. I was a graduate long long time ago, threw some applications around the top 3-4 universities, we should know which they are. C*****, A***, and so on. On the day that I wanted to go take the entrance exam, I looked down the list, every name had a time and a place, mine didn't. I ask them what's wrong. "Oh, you don't have to take it. Your from international school." While I disagree with this practice, it's how things work here. While the whole country has to fight for what's available of the seats left, that is thousands trying to get hundreds of seats left. And of course, everyone your kid meets at school is connected heavily. Name any large enterprise in Thailand, there's a kid there.

The courses are top notched, your kid if they can graduate, could easily be the brightest 10% of Thailand, and definitely 30% of the smartest in the world. From biology with microscopes, dissecting frogs and cats, to business courses, accounting, algebra, calculus, economics, you name it. Everything. Recently I heard, every kid has their own laptop to use in school as well. They type while taking notes.

So definitely recommended if you have the money.

No school in the world can turn a dumb kid into one of the smartest in the world. They can definitely help a lot but talent and determination are above that.

  6. These Thais with their whitening crap. They really need to get a life!

I agree. That is totally different than the white people on the beach or at a salon trying to get a tan. Totally different.

Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

    Yes. It is hugely different.

Getting tanned is natural, actually almost unavoidable if go out.

Skin whitening is unnatural and very harmful to the skin.

  7. So it took 3 armed Thais to beat up an unprepared, middle-aged man?

Maybe they hadn't read the Marquess of Queensberry Rules for hit men.

There's no indication that it required three men to get the job done, but your reference to "3 armed Thais" seems to imply that everywhere else in the world when someone is attacked by "bad guys" they first have to make sure the attack is one-on-one, the attacker & attackee are in the same age and weight class, that all weapons are removed and that a referee is present. In the real world, away from the keyboard & comic books, things tend not to operate that way.

More childish comments meant to imply that Thai men are somehow inadequate compared to all the virile, macho, Boy Scout farang from Euro-topia & all points due west.

    dc7d1d74eb21e7318a15ba72104d7b37799263a5

    You're off the mark.

I'm just implying that Thais behave like cowards when a fight takes place. Sorry if it hits you in the nail...

  8. I have never understood the fetish for halal food. The meat has always had a very, very strange taste, to me, especially halal chicken.

I'd sooner have blood on my plate.. giggle.gif

Personally i don't like the way muslims want to kill their food by bleeding it to death while it is still alive.

Barbaric behavior, but sadly that too can be said about countries including my own that mass produce livestock where the animals have lousy living conditions.

In many countries that export to the middleeast a lot the chickens are halal butchered, because otherwise they could not be exported to the middleeastern market.

Look on the package off your chicken and if you see any arabic writing and a marking, it's almost certain it has been halal butchered if you see these.

Here in Denmark if we want to buy normally killed chickens with no religions mumbo jumbo attatched to it from the leading supplier Danpo it's a no go.

Danpo electrocute all their chickens before they have their arteri cut open on a conveyour belt while some muslim worker says a prayer at certain times.

Do i find it offensive that a specific religion should determine how we are killing our livestock in a non muslim country. Yes

Can i taste the difference. No but then again i have no idea if my chicken are killed normally or not.

Can i be sure my food has not been halal butchered? No not unless i visit the farmer himself and watch the killing.

A lot of danes have no idea that they are eating halal butchered chickens and i guess that is not something that only happens here.

Can someone fill me in how chickens in Thailand generally is beeing raised and killed or are most of them imported?

Personally i don't like the way muslims want to kill their food by bleeding it to death while it is still alive.

    Barbaric behavior.

Is there a right way? If you're a meat eater then surely it is irrelevant how the animal is slaughtered. I could suggest it is a lot less stressful for an animal to have it's throat cut and blead to death than to have a bolt shot through its head to kill it!

Other than that, I think you're post has a hint of racism to it. IMO

Racism? The guy doesn't like that disgraced religion so what? Should he be more political? He has the right of having an opinion.

  9. If you've ever seen a Thai soap, there are often young pretty boys playing the role of the good policeman. The chicks seem to like that. However in reality, most cops are darker skinned than the lads on TV shows, thus, less appealing.

Have you noticed on the Thai soaps, how the people with whiter skin and have had the falung nose job, are the good people and the darker skinned Thais play the villain.

    Just an observation.

Yes. The obsession with whiteness here is amazing. On most of the soaps, the ones who live in the 50 million baht homes are always pasty white. Like casper the friendly ghost. Except they are usually bitches. Loudmouths, scheming, conniving, and nasty. I always tell my thai girlfriend repeat after me- Black is beautiful, white is bad. She thinks I am nuts. They just do not get it. I cannot believe the number of stunning, dark skinned women here, who think they are ugly because of their gorgeous, cocoa colored skin. If only they knew the truth! I think a great business model is the "Chocolate Bar". Hire dark skinned girls only. I would love to see the look on a beautiful light skinned girls face, when you told her she cannot work there because her skin is too light. I love the very concept.

Tell me about it. It disgusts me seeing this whitening crap here.

Hahaha you are funny, But in our countries it is exactly the very same....

    Glegolo

    No, it's not.

  11. There are two things you can do in this situation. The first is to say (in Thai) you don't speak English and continue the conversation in Thai. The second is to start speaking English as you would to a native speaker and when they fail to understand, continue the conversation in Thai.

In theory a good idea. But what if the Thai starts talking street slang at machine gun speed. Then he beats you with your own weapon.
If this happens or they talk back to you in an Isaan dialect, then they do not want to talk to you and you should move on. Some Thai people do not like to speak Bangkok dialect, but can speak and understand this dialect. If they want to sell you something or have a brief conversation they will accommodate you. If not you have your answer.

But if you use some Isaan words with the Isaan people they get happy beyond words :)

  12. It blows your opportunities to practice Thai and evolve

Does it also bother you? How do you go about it?

silly and ignorant remarks like yours bother me since i found out that those who speak Thai still have to pay 7.6 million Baht for a fully loaded Benz CLS, i.e. not a single Satang less than the Farang who only knows a few polite phrases and numbers.

of course... there might be a substantial discount using Thai when bargaining the price for a noodle soup with a street vendor tongue.png

Silly and ignorant, says the fellow who can't even capitalize a word...

  13. @rlopes

What bothers me are people who are easily bothered by the slightest inconvenience.

They complain non-stop but can't be bothered to cheer up and make a positive contribution themselves.

Sorry to bother you with my botheredness.

Says the one who's complaining about my complaint. Maybe yourself should think about making a positive contribution?

Does it also bother you? No! But your attitude does...

You would be surprised to know how many people are bothered by yours...

  14. Have you considered leaving the kingdom ?

Have you considered writing something useful in your first posts? Why would even bother registering to write so much BS is beyond me.

    1. Tell me you don't agree with me then. How many Thais can get beyond the very basics when they say things like "no have" ?

    Quite a few millions.

    3. My very basic Thai is good enough to order most things. In fact, the seller will waste much more time trying to remember what he learnt in English then vice-versa?

Your very basic Thai sucks. Otherwise the seller who speaks excellent Thai wouldn't be working with English. The reason the seller is doing that is he couldn't understand a word you said. He would much rather speak Thai, trust me here, but has decided it is hopeless if he is ever going to move his business along and get to the customer after you.

I think you are confused. _Quite a few millions_ is the amount of Thais that can properly read and write Thai, not English.

Not that I blame them directly. I know the shit this country has gone through and that they are doing what they can.

PSs: Most Thais reply just fine to me in Thai. My rant is about the few prouder ones.

  15. Amazing.

Newbie Thai-language learners get frustrated picking up a difficult language and blame (1) the แม่ค้า selling som-tam (thanks for the giggle, rlopes) and (2) the entire (xenophobic, should-have-been-colonized) nation of Thailand (thanks for the laugh, David)

Funny and disturbing at the same time!

    wai2.gif

NaiGreg, it must feel great giggling (how cute) at newbies like me. I'm sure you jumped straight to the expert level you are at now...

  16. Whether or not a Thai is going to speak in English or Thai to you usually depends on your level of Thai.

If your Thai is better than their English, they'll quickly switch to Thai.

There are a few exceptions, but it's generally like that.

My experience is that they can very quickly estimate your level of Thai.

If you want that Thai people speak Thai to you, you've to try to sound natural, use talking language, avoid schoolbook language.

Many farang believe they can speak Thai, but in reality they can't...

English is the most used middle language (especially among Caucasian/white people) so it it's perfectly logical they try to speak English to you when your Thai is not that good.

The excuse that it's not useful to study Thai because Thai people refuse to speak Thai to you or even refuse to understand you if you speak Thai is totally absurd.... if you think this you might want to do some self reflection.

    That's not always the case.

Usually street vendors and more "humble" people seem to be happy when they see I know some Thai, even if it's basic. Even when they know basic English, which happens a lot. It's a good laugh for them hearing me talk, which I don't mind.

The issue is more with middle class folks. It seems they will die if they don't show off their English skills to their fellows.
