  1. You wont make any serious money teaching in Thailand, you would probable made more on the social in the USA. Not been negative, but that's the truth. Unless your moving for some other reason's like been a sxxpat or Alco I would stay where you are!
I'm very aware that I will not be making a lot of money in Thailand. That's not the point. I have a gf who lives in Bangkok so I will be staying with her. I'm not going to spend 10 years teaching in Thailand. This is just a temporary thing.

Guys, I would like to refrain from negative statements. I'm fully aware of the issues when one works in Thailand. The pay sucks. You can't make money, etc..

    Thanks.

Really you don't f..all till you live here for long term everything will be against you as you will be a farang with no rights to own anything or say anything, a girlfriend means nothing over here LMFAO, is she poor? have a kid that's she is not telling you about? does she want to go to the west?

All you probable don't know and will learn the hard way. I'M NOT BEEN NEGIVATIVE, FAR FROM IT BUT SOME EXPERIENCED ADVISE GOES A LONG.

    WAY....

Sorry but your been native on the situation, trust me I am a good guy.

I didn't say that you were being negative. I'm aware of the issues falangs face when we decide yo teach in Thailand. Out of all the Asian countries Thailand is probably the worst when it comes to pay and other ammenties. For instance, in Korea I had a free place to live, my air fare was covered and I was making twice the pay when compared to a teacher in Thailand. Also, I was given an extra paycheck at the end of my contract. I will not get any of those things in Thailand.

As for my girl. I am using my time with her to see if we are compatible or not. If I feel that it's not working out then I will leave and move on. I have the power to do this and I will utilize it if I feel that it's not working out.

I didn't say that you were a negative person. Still, your post had nothing to do with my questions. I would like to stay on topic. That's all.

    Thanks.

That all good that you have your head firmly on your shoulder's, good for you, you seem like a young enough guy that wants to enjoy life! Like myself, good on you and good luck! I was only trying to give advise but I'm sure you are well able to look after yourself! smile.png

No problem. It can be difficult to gauge if the poster is being an a-hole or is actually a decent person by just reading their post.

    thanks.

  2. That's going to be next Monday.

    Thanks.

    Not going to happen.

Work permits for teachers are issued to qualified teachers only - you mentioned college but no teaching degree?

AFAIK, it takes at least two-three weeks to get a proper work permit issued, and that's the quickest route (read into that what you like).

I have a teaching degree. I'm a qualified regular/special ed teacher in NJ. I taught in South Korea for two years, and I can tell you that the process to teach in Korea is very strict.

    Thanks for the help.

  5. Hello All,

I am going to be in Thailand Thursday night. I am on a double entry visa (tourist). I have a possible teaching position lined up when I get into Bangkok, and I could possibly start Monday.

    Now my questions...

    1) Can I start on Monday or do I need to wait until the paper work goes through? You're not supposed to be working on a tourist visa and I'd like to avoid any issues.

    2) How long does it take for the paperwork to go through? Also, what do they need? I worked in South Korea for two years and the process to get documents is quite extensive. I had to get FBI prints, and I had to get my college degree apostatized. Also, they wanted a sealed college transcript. Is it the same process in Thailand or is it easier/faster?

    3) How do Thais deal with people who break their teaching contracts? I have a position lined up in Korea in September. I don't want to sit around and spend my money in Bangkok. I'd like to work and earn some money while I'm there. I was going to work until late August and then fly to South Korea to start my job there. It's still up in the air as nothing is concrete yet. I could just stay in Thailand and with the school.

I guess that's it. Supposedly the school needs a teacher immediately so they are a bit desperate.

    Thanks.

  6. If you cannot afford electrical bills you have a big problem surviving in Thailand. Not kidding.

I was thinking the same. I ran my aircon in NJ for one month during the summer and I got a bill for $300. I know we're talking about Thailand but still. A $30usd a month aircon bill seems like a dream.

  7. It's important to be proactive when it comes to this topic.

The next time you're at the beach take a look at the kids and older people. The older people are sitting on their butts exhausted to do anything. The kids are up and playing with their friends or they are doing being active alone. Being inactive and neglecting your body is the quickest way to old age.

Your body doesn't have to deteriorate with age. That's a myth. Take a look at Jack lalanne. The guy was 93 when he passed. He never had any ailments. He looked 20 years younger. He was mobile and did things that a 30 year old couldn't do. We prematurely age because 1) lack of exercise 2) we eat like sh*t. It's not even about taking supplements. Just eat a healthy diet and stay active.

Genetics plays a huge role as well. I'm 44 years old and I look like I'm in my mid 30's. I have a full head of hair, broad shoulders and nice skin. My brother is overweight and is bald. He's only one year younger than me. Funny how it works.

  8. First of all, I don't think you need to be concerned about the language barrier. Doctors in the hospitals you would be interested in will be sufficiently capable in English.

I've never heard of a "foreign hospital" as such. The biggies in Bangkok - eg, Bumrungrad - are very reputable. Just do a little searching in the medical thread and you will get a better picture to ease your mind.

Prices? No idea. Hope someone can give you an indication.

I'm replying to this thread because I also need some moles removed, and I'd like the same info as you. I'm in the Thai social security system (free medical), but it ties me to a specific hospital, which I don't like, so I'm prepared to pay out of my own pocket to have the operation. I hope someone can give you (and me) a guide.

    All the best.

That's true about the language barrier. I was basing my experience from the time I was teaching in South Korea. I had a difficult time finding a doctor who spoke English. Then again I was in an area that was 4 hours from Seoul. If I was in Seoul the chance of me finding a doctor who spoke English would have increased.

I'd expect the prices in Thailand to be relatively cheap compared to the prices back home.

If it's not cosmetic I'd get those moles removed immediately. We tend to overlook melatonin and this is a huge mistake. I would think that living in Thailand increases your chances of getting melatonin.

  9. Hello all,

I had 2 suspicious moles removed on my lower back a few weeks ago. The report just came back. The one mole came back with a low chance of going melatonin. The only mole came back with a medium risk of going melatonin. They wanted me to come into the office to get the 2nd one extracted. The thing is I don't have insurance, and I'm going to be in Bangkok next week. I told them that I'm going to take care of it there instead. I have my report with me, and I will show this to the doctors. The cost to have one removed in New Jersey is just too much money for me. My bill to get those two moles removed plus a visit cost close to $800

I know that there are good foreign doctors in Bangkok, and with a large aging foreign population I would suspect that they do this type of thing quite regularly.

    My questions are...

    1) The best foreign hospital w/ foreign doctors to get my mole(s) removed?

    2) What should I expect in terms of price?

I know that there are capable Thai doctors. I'm just concerned with facing a language barrier.

**This isn't for cosmetic reasons, so I want to go to a qualified doctor and not a clinic.

    Thank you.

  10. Welcome to Thailand!!! tongue.png

You'll find, there are some differences between what the Embassy and the three official consulates require in terms of documentation for getting different things. And there are also differences, sometimes, between what the official consulates and the honorary ones will do, both by policy and just in practice.

That's sometimes why different posters report different experiences about what can and cannot be done. Historically, it's also been true that some of the various honorary consulates have been more helpful/cooperative than their official counterparts... though the Ministry of Foreign Affairs seems to have been trying to curtail that flexibility, such as through the mail-in applications restriction.

Bottom line, it often can pay off to do a bit of research here and shop around, depending on one's particular location and accessibility to the various consulates and honorary consulates, to see what visa-issuing location is going to provide the best fit/response for what someone needs.

You can't send in your info by mail if you're applying for a Visa with a honorary consulate? I sent my info to the New York consulate thru USPS Express mail. This is what the instructions were online.

  11. Also, I called Thai embassy in Washington and the consulate in New York.

When I talked with the embassy in Washington DC the guy there told me that I needed all these things. Personal letter why I want double entry, plane Itinerary, etc...

The guy from NY had a 2 min conversation. He told me that I didn't need any of these things and said I'm good. Their website doesn't even state that I need a letter and a plane itinerary showing that I have a round trip ticket.

Hopefully, I will not run into any issues.

  12. Most Thai schools want a 22 year old handsome boy with blonde hair and blue eyes. sad.png

    Absolute, Unadulterated, Crap!!!!

    I was joking. :)

I was actually thinking about the Korean environment when i made that statement. In Korea they want young looking foreign teachers.

  13. I don't see the Thais turning down falangs for age. I work in many schools and the age thing doesn't really apply to white teachers.

    Bull!

One word replies are...so short. Please expand your thoughts. smile.png

Because most people in this forum know its bull. I was also turned down for TWO jobs for this new term, why? Well, I am 52. And countless others as well. They want Brad Pitt types.

Brad Pitt is older than 50. So your 52 would be perfect then.

But I don't belive they will get any "Brad P types" with the salaries they pay here

Brad was born in 1963 which would make him 50. He is an exception because his genetics are so wonderful. The guy looks amazing for a 50 year old.

  14. Ben, If you get a double entry tourist visa and go for the first 30 day extension make sure you check the expiration date on the visa. I got the extension and when I did the border crossing 30 days later I was past the "must use by" date by a few days. I was denied the second half of the visa and had to do a bunch of two week crossings. It was a pain to say the least. Make sure to check the date stamped on the Visa and use the second half before then. By stretching out the extension for the full 30 days I lost 90 days. You shouldn't have any problem getting the Visa in NY. Never saw a waiting line there.

Thanks for the heads up. I will do just that. I'm just a little concerned about how I'm going to explain why I need a double entry visa. I will tell them that I need the time to look around and not say anything about work or my girlfriend.

  15. IMA,

    1) So a single entry is 60 days plus another 30. Total 90 days.

    2) A double entry visa will net me 180 days.

I still need to fill out the paperwork for the single entry visa. And I need to have it completed before I leave. Correct?

Telling the embassy that I am going to Thailand to visit my girlfriend isn't going to get me more time in Thailand. I guess I shouldn't tell the embassy this as I'm just going to waste my time?

    Thanks.
