  1. This place never ceases to amaze me. A senior policeman, having worked high up in crime prevention, to fall for such a scam would be mind boggling anywhere else. That he never considered any of it suspicious until it was too late is amazing. Sharing sensitive information to anyone you have not verified is 100% genuine is just stupid, stupid, stupid. I won't get into where the 1.8 million came from in the first place, other than to say that it is said the people most angry about being robbed are those who came by the money dishonestly to start with.
  2. I understand the religious input was essentially to replace the words "married couple" with "civil partners", which seems innocuous enough. If it gets over the line it will be a ground breaking moment in the region. The reality of the world is that same sex relationships are everywhere, even in places that flatly deny it, so giving such people the same rights as heterosexual people enjoy seems fair enough to me.
  3. Evidence in itself that he should not have been behind the wheel. if you don't comprehend the dangers, you should not be driving, especially long distances.
  4. When the wife or mother in law starts brewing durian beer for me, I will start running then.
  5. This is Thailand and life is cheap. Murderers normally get sentences far lighter than drug dealers. This was particularly brutal mind, though I expect he is going to get as much, if not more for trying to hide the evidence, as he will for the murder itself. Once sentenced he will automatically be entered into the behaviour class system with the same reductions in amnesties on sentence in percentage terms as everyone else with his "class."
  6. I guess the instructor never told her the very first rule of never pointing a gun at anyone, whether it is loaded or not.
  7. That is of course daylight robbery, although the money does end up in the public coffers, while here the numbers might be lower amounts, but it is blatant robbery, with the money going into the cops pockets, with the only moot point being if they have genuine ID or dodgy.
  8. You might want to highlight the native language of the pupil, which is obviously quite important. Someone can be fluent in English and Thai, but that's not be helpful to a Japanese student, you know?
  9. I have given up long ago, on expecting anything sensible whatsoever to come out of Anutins mouth. Covid rampant, but that's OK cos its omicron, but entertainment venues have to open under mindless rules? Welcome to Thailand folks.
  10. I am always disgusted when I read of foreigners stooping to such miserably low levels. For the sake of 150 baht it creates publicity which reflects poorly on all of us. I hope he is identified and can receive the shame he so richly deserves.
  11. TBH, I am surprised any of the malls have customers. Most of them are full of over priced garbage which your average Thai simply can't afford right now. Everything in them is available elsewhere, without the inconvenience traffic wise of getting there, and at much better prices, which is obvious given the rent for the mall. Not to mention the police checkpoints fleecing potential visitors too often. I can't comment on T21 being better than Central having never been there. Honestly can't come up with a reason to bother. They are not going to have anything worth the effort, as none of them ever do. Malls here are dying, because they are expensive, boring and predictable. Same stuff, different location. Not much new. The only thing I ever bought in Central was a 60 inch TV, on a one day special at a price I couldn't refuse. Two vaccines I got there also for which I am grateful, especially as they were gratis. Thank You Thailand for that. If there is anything in there worth eating I honestly haven't found it, (and in 2 vaccine waiting sessions, I did look), though I am a tad fussy, though only on quality, not price. My average lunch bill is 200-400 Baht, in a 10-20 minute radius and nothing in any mall I have ever visited can compete on quality, price or convenience of getting in and out. I mean, why would you spend more time to get to somewhere which has more inconvenience, higher prices and lower quality (foodwise) than what is on your doorstep?
  12. "Read my lips" he says, while wearing a mask for once, so you can't see them.
  13. He wouldn't if it had been my kid. Whole thing is disgusting from top to bottom, but about what you expect from the BIB.
  14. That is a very accurate statement and reflects completely a conversation I had with my idiot son this morning, whose girlfriend has just dumped him for being, as she and I both agreed in English and Thai, self centered and inconsiderate. Does he love her? Yes. Does he think about what she needs, remotely as much as he cares about what he wants? No. She loves him but can't deal further with him not giving anything to the relationship. As I draw ever closer to 60, I have come to the conclusion that there is no realistic way I can ever "fall in love" again. I have many attributes, but am just too darn cynical to be able to believe that Mrs. Right number 3 (1 and 2 obviously having been discovered to be flawed and dropped off along the road), is going to spice my life up to the extent needed, especially when you live in Thailand where needs can be obtained without inviting a potential shrew into the house, causing you much misery. I might have dreamt of finding a super rich, stunning virgin, with amazing culinary skills and on the budding stages of nymphomania in my youth, but my heart couldn't take that at my age for long, so the cover of the book is now way less important than the contents, which are unlikely to be readily found when you are an old dog, not keen on new tricks. I was possibly a fool and let go of the best relationship I had ever had over hers and my need to work in different parts of the world. Mrs Right number 3 will have to be something I suspect I am not going to find locally, though I live in hope.
  15. Waterworks Authority to Closely Monitor Water Situation This Year Jeez! Whats so special about this year? After all, you would expect them to be monitoring in it all year round every year right? It is their job to do so isn't it?. Weather has been unusual though. In 15 years never saw that much rain in February. Normally might have one or two showers, but Pattaya beach still washed away and local flooding in all the normal areas happened. Just early, despite the untold sums that have gone into town drainage. Talks of drought after the wettest "dry" season I have ever seen is either incompetent officials dribbling (which would be understandable), or a suggestion that rain this early , might hint at a dry "wet" season remains to be seen. That there climate change can pop its head up anywhere. Personally I think they are clueless and spouting what they think people want to hear, based largely on the fact they don't have a clue what is going to happen, but want to be seen to be doing or saying something.
  16. Well, its good news if you want to come here next month, assuming of course that you don't book and pay for a flight and hotel, only for the rules to change again just before you are due to board. That couldn't happen here though right?
  17. It's a ridiculous law, totally outdated and utterly ignored by millions, and policed negligibly. Common sense says to drop it by the wayside, especially when you want tourists, but Thailand is Thailand, so don't expect common sense to prevail. It will go one day and those with an active mind, as the article itself says buy it in quantity early, which enables the law to be ineffective, so pointless. Getting a Thai career bureaucrat with barely a handful of connected and functioning brain cells to work that out is going to take time though. Then more time for the even more brainless above them to vote it through, while they try to work out if there is more or less money, or popularity in it for them.

  19. I know it is said that every little helps, but I am somewhat dismayed that in this case the "little" truly is seriously little, especially for an entire nation.
  20. A link to a site which does not allow us to use such has been removed. From forum rules: 26) The Bangkok Post and Phuketwan do not allow quotes from their news articles or other material to appear on ASEANNOW.com. Neither do they allow links to their publications. 21. Terrible and brutal thing to do. So he not only raped her, but used her shame of it to keep her quiet. Its a shame that the girl didn't understand that he could not in reality ever publish the photos or videos, without landing himself in jail at the same time. I don't think the depths of hell descend deep enough for this scumbag.
  22. It isn't the date that determines the beginning of summer, it is when the prevailing winds change direction and bring warmer air from the south, rather than cold air from the north, which they have now apparently done. The date at which this happens changes every year, sometimes by weeks.
  23. The exchange rate you will get at home for Thai Baht is likely to be pretty poor. I would suggest changing Baht into your home currency and carry it with you. When you are there if you run low, your ATM card offers a much better rate than cash, as long as your bank allows international withdrawals, which all of my accounts do. It is only large amounts over $10,000 USD which needs to be declared.
  24. I noticed when in the bank on Friday that they were not offering any exchange on the rouble in cash or travellers cheques either, so going to be difficult as well as expensive.
