  1. Bangkok is a dirty, polluted, smelly, overcrowded, traffic-snarled, concrete-covered 3rd World hole. If you pay more than, say, 25k baht to live in such an unpleasant place, you seriously need your head examining. 10k baht is more like a reasonable price to live in such a cesspit. I posted a few months ago a report by an international pollution monitoring organization that showed that Bangkok's pollution is the worst in the world, with the exception of a few Indian and Chinese cities. You are paying with your health by living there. Even if there were no cars, places that regularly have temperatures exceeding 32 C are generally bad for your health. When considering to rent in Bangkok, you have to factor in the unpleasant and life-threatening environment and pay accordingly. Don't be sucker who thinks it's justifiable to fork out 50k baht a month for a high-rise apartment in Bangkok! It just isn't worth it.

    I like it here.

Me too. And I've lived in a lot of places.

  2. Wealthy people in my experience don't use the term sucker. They understand the price and value of things. If you want to live centrally and close to work. That has a price and value to whomever makes the decision to live there. If one chooses to live somewhere inexpensive then that is a choice and most wealthy people would understand that. They usually also don't go around telling people they are wealthy either.

  3. Disagree with you on this one SB. I know you know sound economic policy does not necessarily make it right. I think you are just stirring on this one. I can think of many discriminatory actions that would be sound but are wrong. What gees me up about this is the high tax I pay here for nothing. I gather you aren't a tax payer.

  4. Thought it was a decent article with some astute observations. I thought she was a little too empathetic to the small % of misogynistic dinosaurs that I run into from time to time here however.

WOW this word misogynistic is popping up all over the place here on TV. Somebody is trying to impress us illiterates. I guess I do fall into the dinosaur category at my advanced age but a misogynistic one certainly not. Must Google that word now so I can throw it out there. Always trying to improve myself.

It's a pretty commonly-used word - I don't think anyone is employing it in an attempt to impress.

Easy Soi Biker your degree is showing again. Just having a little fun. A new word a day keeps the doctor away.

If he want to be accurate he would use gynophobia (aversion/fear of women) in place of misogyny (hatred of women).

Used by feminists, not in an attempt to impress, but in an attempt to insult and vilify people who don't agree with them.

Nope. Misogyny is the correct word.

  5. Do Western women come to Thailand for the men?

No, they go to Kenya, Jamaica and other islands in the Caribbean.

Sex tourism for women is alive and well and has been for years.

It's just not talked about so much.

I'm guessing the numbers are significantly lower - I wonder if there are any reputable figures for number of female sex tourists?

I think there are a lot of Japanese women who travel to Bali specifically for this purpose. I used to live in Japan and a Friend told me there is even a magazine targeting these women. Must be reasonable numbers if that is the case.

Just got back from Google I do not hate women period. What a sneaky way of saying that.

Happy to help. You will no doubt use it yourself now going forward when you see instances of it.

  7. I just went through this for my #2 here. There's a raft of documents you need and an application form to fill out. You can get the detailed info here:

    https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Citi/Appl/How-to-apply/Application-process-for-citizenship-by-descent

Couple of tips. For some reason when applying in Thailand you will need your full birth certificate. This took me some time as I had to send off to birth deaths and marriages for it. Also they will ask for evidence of the relationship. Make sure you include photos of you and the fiancé while she is visibly pregnant and after the birth with the child. I also included credit card statements showing payments to the hospital during her pregnancy (they didn't ask for that here but they did in Singapore when I was applying for #1). Once you get the documents sorted and various ones certified (you can do this at the trendy building if you are in Bkk) I simply submitted the documents and it was approved about 8 days later and the citizenship cert was sent out to me. Once you have the citizenship cert it's pretty straightforward to apply for the passport.
