  1. Seeing as Buddhism is, in a sense, a practice of self-discipline, is gambling thought of to be wrong according to Buddhism?  If so, why is it that so many devout Thai buddhists gamble?  I see many of them pray, go to the temple, have all sorts of shrines & statues around dedicated to Buddhism yet continue to gamble.  If one is going to practice a particular way of thought, in this case Buddhism, one should try to abide by all the teachings and not just the ones that are convenient right?  Can someone with more knowledge about Buddhism explain this to me please?

TRIPxCORE I believe your OP above addresses a very pertinent point and although both "meadish_sweetball" & "camerata" have provided some very very good input - I dont feel the core of your initial post has been fully answered ( I am not sure if it is possible to answer it fully) but I will be very interested to follow this post to see if any further insight can be offered.

Apologies I also meant to include "sabaijai" in the very very good input company.

  2. I have been guilty of this a few times, not so much lately but when I was quite new to the forum.

It normally happens when I am in a bad mood (nothing to do with the post I am responding to) but more often than not when I have had one to many Chang's.

My fingers engage the keyboard before my brain is anywhere near it and its normally a tirade with spelling mistakes all over the place.

Then as soon as you hit "Post Reply" I think 'Oh my God -what have I just said?

Then I normally skulk off to bed knowing that I will have to face the consequences of my actions the next morning.

Anybody else ever been guilty of this alcohol inflicted sin?

Not in this medium but I once had a National Manager who advocated - Holding your response to an annoying customer/situation for 24 hours.

Re-reading your initial response ( often penned with steam coming out of your ears) and contemplating in the light of day was it still appropriate - or now that the steam had gone out of the situation should you tone it down a little.

Suprising how many times it paid dividends - I apply the same concept when responding to some of the posts on TV. Or even more importantly when discussing things with the other half it makes for a very peaceful co-habitation and once again it's suprising how many times in the light of day the other halfs point of view makes sense.

  3. Why don't you do a story about how some tuk tuk and cab drivers in the bigger cities like to rip off farangs. Especially when they see them getting off a bus. ("Where you go, where you go")

Or how when a store keeper sees a farang they immediately raise prices 10%.

Or how all the national parks have a Thai price and a farang price.

I'm not really complaining because anywhere you go you have to learn to sidestep a few landmines to enjoy life. In southeast asia, there are lots of landmines.

richard10365 My question is how can you be ripped off by:

    1. A Tuk Tuk driver - you have to negotiate the fare before you set off - if you think its to much try another means of transport (shanks pony).

    2. Taxi drivers there is a meter????

The storekeeper is not even in the league of supermarkets in Australia they raise prices on commodities during pension pay weeks and list specials for the period (SMTW) before pensions are paid on the Thursday. The storekeeper where I live charges me the same as her Thai customers. (Did I mention the storekeeper is my wife)

National Parks has been debated to death - maybe it could be looked at in reverse The real price being eg. 200 baht and a discount allowed for residents (who happen to be in this case Thai) to encourage them to visit with their Farang friends as they may not be able to afford it as much as the holidaying farang tourist. (only a thought).

Mate get a life before it's too late!! forget the landmines they will look after themselves.

  4. Smart Traffic Signs In Bangkok Will They Help????

    :o:D:D

Try the flashing "80" sign on the Ban Pa-in Toll way - it may as well be advertising of high winds, high temperature, or maybe it means how many centimetres the sign is from the ground - because nary a soul assimilates to be in connection to Max Speed 80kms.

On second thoughts maybe I am reading it wrong maybe the 80 stands for 80 seconds to get to your next destination.

SMART International signs are also "shape specific" so that when a person looks at the back he/she knows what it is about (no need to read the language). eg Inverted Triangle "Give Way" first came across these in Vietnam 1968 good to see the ??HUB (?? whats the flavour this month) coming on line, it will fit in snugly with the PM's longer time allowance for main carriageways because no doubt they have discussed how the two will work together :D:D. Or is it possible they the PM & the Gov are not working in unison on this particular issue -dread the thought!!

  5. Bambi TQ TQ

So the southern bus terminal will definitely have a bus to pranburi, right?

In that case yr idea of taking the BTS until Siam is ###### good idea.

Regular buses leave Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal

    Bus Bkk-Pranburi from 5am - 7pm

    Bus(a/c) Bkk-Pranburi from 4am-10.20pm

Call 435-1199 (air-conditioned bus) or 434-5557-8 (non air-conditioned bus) for more information.

BTW do you do this full time.....i.e. helping strangers with weird requests?

    You are so kind.  :D

well actually i work ...but my job no need to work every second , anyhow today it's raining here all day ..so im not busy

well.. i think its ok to help people ..maybe oneday i might be a stranger with weird Q and ask some help for somebody ..who knows.

    Bambi :D

BambinA that is one of the nicest inputs I have read in many a year :D:o

  6. the title could have been chosen less sensationalist , i suppose .

well, it got your attention, so thats why!!

and yes, I am sure Felix is totally involved in researching the topics he chooses

and yes, there are some expats not involved or interested in the sex industry..but I wonder why they came here in the first place? :o

SiamOne the real question here is why do you wonder about such topics???

Patrick I am moving to your way of thinkong - .

Hopefully Felix Lynn will correct this if the perception gained from his heading is incorrect

  7. Why don't you build a small castle, with a moat and draw bridge. You could fill the moat with crocs. If thieves manage to traverse the moat, you can poor boiling hot oil over them. This used to work, where I come from, but that was long ago.  :o

People who built the Aust Embassy must have read the history books they have the moat concept dont know about the boiling oil though.

  8. I am after a good site so as i can download Thai onto my computer.

Currently running XP and have bought a Thai keyboard.

Before I take another trip to Pntip and pay the 1500 thought i would ask about any free downloads available.

  9. ok ED will try that thanks (baht and sold provided similar advice just recently but i did not think the boxes they would stock would be big enough). Will get off my bum and try them thanks again.

  10. hi mate, you will find that most of the people on here are very unhelpful, and  forget that they needed help when they 1st came to thailand. most of them are so up there own backside,  its unbelievable.

i find that its best to use the search function, you can sometimes pick handy info up, but the problem is you have to read through all the negative comments, and some times it gets you down..

but keep ya pecker up, and aim high, if you want something bad enough, you will succeed! :o

lucy1 be a little realistic please people are not unhelpful but if djgambol job applications are anything like his post no wonder he is not receiving any responses.

Reread the initial post "I am looking for work here but finding it hard to get work. I have good reports from School and college. I email vacancies everyday but no reply. I am not ugly so photo dont put them off. CV ok so any ideas where can get work".

I reiterate my advice "do more research" "do more face to face" It is easier to hit the delete button than to reject an enthusiastic face to face applicant"

lucy1 "if you want work bad enough you will succeed" not if you dont get out there in there face - if you want to sit and send emails happy sitting.

luc1 and djgambol ask yourself "what value do I add" if you can answer this in a positive sense then get out there and sell your value if it is in the negative then do more groundwork dig skills out of your bag of experience that you believe businesses in Thailand need

  11. Remember the iceberg concept only 25% of jobs are advertised (show) so select your field research the possible employers research those employers (names history) ask yourself what can you do for them (look up their KPI.s, their business charter, their goals dont limit what you write down sift it later).

Put a resume/application together start calling arrange interviews/meetings get off your bottom (I use bottom due to your tender age nearer my age get off your arse).

Get the concept of you need them out of your thoughts They Need You - Now go and convince them of that.

You dont say if you are farang or Thai but I find it difficult to believe a farang school leaver is here looking for a job - hence work on your English - practice phone manner, smile get friends farang/thai if possible to put you through some mock interviews the list goes on.

Happy job hunting (remember it is very difficult for a prospective employer to know you are in the job hunting mode unless you tell them - not many have crystal balls for those that have practice your ball cleaning skills)..

  12. Samran my wife (thai) is covered fairly well by what she will receive from the Govt x % of what I & her recieve now.

We have a small life insurance policy in her name (20000) per year more as a compulsory saving and a little nest egg for her in years to come. She may well use it to visit Aust or have a big piss up to say thank goodness that pain in the arse is gone. 20000 a small price to pay for her peace of mind.

    Works for us.

  13. from a person with a very non-tanning complexion - its probably too late but a really hot bath as soon as you had arrived home and smooth the burnt area with really ripe tomato.

    The other suggestions:

Aloe Vera great if you have a plant - Good - have not found the commercial variety much help.

Plain yogurt to cool the burn, then apply a topical vitamin E cream - vitamin E great never tried yogurt but would not knock it until I tried it.

NB. Try the yogurt if it doesnt help the sunburn then have the GF lick it off that should take your mind off the sunburn for a little or long while.

  14. It is a hormon thing - chop you balls off - and you will be OK.

    Whiteshiva

(balding, but otherwise in working order!)

WhiteShiva Take a bow you made my day :D

On my next trip to Thailand I was going to check out what options I had. Seeking a hair facility in Bangkok for hair regeneration, plugs, grafts, etc...................... DJM

Had a friend who went down this road looked absolutely ridiculous :D we bought him a hat.

chownah very good and so true.

buadhai I thought you had to rub against someone with the mange for it to be transferred - oh having said that - maybe there is more medical advice to be sought here?? :D

NextStationBangkok good remedy but a lot of steps a more simpler is put abot 16 table spoons of WB shit in a cup mix 2 teaspoons of palmolive baby oil, 2 to 3 teaspoons of baby powder (any brand) boil and smooth the paste over entire scalp ( 4 men with a large cranium)nb. cranium double the ingriedients nb. it may be painful but results will be devasting.

Disclaimer: The above is not guaranteed to make your hair grow but it will make you look as silly as using all the so called promises available on the market and it is fairly cheap - in the bargain it will be a subject of great merriment for your friends to talk about over a few beers for evermore. :o

  15. tukyleith hope your not teaching maths anywhere

Luckily not mate, however perhaps PM thickskin could use my talents in his treasury department?

tukyleith sorry jumped in early with my maths comment without reading that someone else had provided the solution.

mate me thinks PM thickskin may do better with your maths than some of the people he has now. At least your small miscalculation (glad its not my bank) could be corrected - thinks instead PMT peoples just pocket the + (ups) and cover up the - (unders). ( I think there is a game called under & overs never knew until now it was created in the land of smiles.

  16. Also, we were told that, because our organization has been newly approved, it could take some years to get any permision for work permits.

This part could be very well correct I remember when they established the Hellfire Pass facility there was all sorts of waiting periods before full approval was achieved.

Of course there are temporary measures that can be implemented and letters to cover the interim period can be obtained.

  17. I have submitted three posts in recent months:

#Visas and migration to other countries

    ##Australian Embassy Brickbats 2005-08-01 21:00:02

    ## Australian Embassy & Security 2005-08-17 20:10:06

#Thai visas, residency and work permits

    ##Nong Khai Posted on: 2005-08-27 13:25:53

Amongst the issues I raised was the lack of knowledge displayed by the staff. This was in regard to "My washed passport that included my Multi Non-Immg class O visa.

After reading of your dilema I am now sure if I had not made my point and also communicated with DFAT Australia (one way- no plausable response from Aust nothing at all from Bangkok) I would be on the plane with you to Singapore to obtain a new 1 year visa.

This is like closing the gate after the "visa" has bolted but maybe some other unknowing soul will benefit from the posts.

In a word do not rely upon your embassy to know the procedure, check it out for yourself before you embark on the unknown, and further to that if what you know to be correct is countermanded by the locally employed staff ask Politely to see the supervisor, do not take not in or out to lunch as an answer just move your request up the pecking order. I am sure by the time you ask to see the ambassador indicating your not leaving until satisfied a result will be forthcoming.

  18. When I was a kid in the US, I recall they listed two octane ratings on every pump.  If I remember what my dad told me at the time, we were in a transition period where they had to switch to a single standard for measuring octane and eventually one was phased out which had showed higher numbers for the same gas.

Does anyone know this for sure?  Does Thailand use the same rating method as the US uses now?  I assumed not, because I don't see why carmakers would want to design engines which require different grades of gas for different markets.

Octane ratings have changed over the years due to technology requirements. Engine compression ratios which is one of several factors in governing the fuel octane rating required have increased to the point where an everyday comparison would be a car of the 60's that required "super" would now run on "standard" octane % (except for the fact standard or today is unleaded this is ok).

Octane ratings do differ as you see here in Thailand 91 & 95. Thailand sell a mixture fuel gasahol where in Australia some shifty operators and large companies actually add to the normal fuel to create a mixture and subsequently increase their profit margin. The law now requires the service station operator to display if it is full fuel or mixture fuel and you make the decision.

Off topic a little but I am sure the quality of diesel sold in Thailand is of poor standard (less refining process hence a fuel oil) There has to be a simple logical reason as to the number of Black Smoke belching diesels on the road:

Lack of maintenance (not changing filters etc etc) covers some cases, old worn systems covers some more cases, lack of fuel injection system maintenance covers some more cases, even incorrect exhaust (big mufflers) cover more cases but when you see new pick-ups belching "black" smoke in normal running mode - (black smoke indicating incomplete combustion) there HAS to be a reason.

Thought only -- if you can buy or supply one commodity(low grade or less refined) cheaper than the real Mckoy and the substitute does the job but adds to polution are you going to forego the extra baht - No especially where there is very little regulatory enforcement and baht in the pocket overides any sense of community spirit.

  19. Is my math completely wrong, is the above correct?

Last I was aware 95 fuel in Aust. was roughly 37bht per litre?

tukyleith hope your not teaching maths anywhere try dividing the cost in baht by 4.5 it will make Saudi etc more realistic.

Australia last advice average about $1.20 per litre = 37.20 baht
