  1. I think you are right about there being a lot of ######s in Udon Thani area :D

All us good guys live in nongbaulampoo :o

The good guys hang around Ban Dung, 80 miles northeast of Udon; they don't hang around farang bars because they moved to Issan to enjoy the lifestyleand great outdoors.

up2youbar, try to make friends with the locals and only mix with farangs with whom you have something in common.

bannork do you know Dave from ban dung (ex Pattayaup2u) was establishing a nice meeting place (a quite drink every now and then) just out of ban dung??

  2. aletta quite a lot of movement Legal or Illegal have no idea. River was in full flight did not notice any fish movement very muddy.

On a more serious note I believe there is a closed period next month another conference ## this needs Confirming only intended as a heads up Please confirm True or Not?

  3. Anyone heading off going home for a visit (back to work for x months) currently living in Khon Kaen or Korat areas needing a house sitter.

    Plants, pets looked after.

    Nominal rent to be negotiated.

Security of assets guaranteed not a loafer/lurker just like to move upcountry and get a feel of the area for awhile.

PM or email all response answered.

  4. Visited Nong Khai last week for the 90day over the bridge into Laos and back to LoS standard routine except this time I had a new passport:

Old passport had been put through the wash but contained Multi Entry Non Immg class O visa and all previous entry and exit stamps (all legal).

New Passport fresh - details page only.

No problems Thai Immg directed me into the office (Thai side of the border) where it took about 30 minutes to formally enter and cross reference new and old passport details, after about 6 signatures and all cross referencing entered into new passport I was on my way.

Caught the shuttle bus (be wary the guy on the Thai side charges 20 baht supposedly for a return trip when you board he collects ticket stubs from you).

Laos, filled out applications for visa and entry/exit card paid $30 American (worth noting as I had bought some American dollars in Khon Kaen so it cost approx 1250 baht rather than the 1600 baht required when using Thai currency). (Dont forget passport size photo)

Walked through paid another 10 baht entry fee a quick 1 minute look at the Lao sky and out again no exit fee and wait for the return shuttle to Thai side of the Bridge this time a 10 baht sign indicates cost of the trip.

A good trip and no problems I thought it was worth posting so as to raise the points:

1.You still require your old passport if it contains you visa.

2.Thai immgration do enter a cross reference in the data base.

3.You can save yourself 350 baht by taking American Dollars.

4.Also watch out for the shuttle bus shark on the Thai side of the border.

##Saved 360 baht which if wisely invested into 9 bottles of Chang will be pay dividends beyond belief. :o

  5. Geeeeesh. :o  And what was your life like for 2+ years with all the Farang in Pattaya?  Having said that, guess I haven't yet experienced the posted problems in Korat area to the degree that you talk about for Udon.  Sure there is the "occasional" Farang who might not be so happy, but overall, my experience of 15 years in the area just doesn't fit your decription of Udon.  Perhaps I'll make a trip up that way and "see" for myself. :D

up2ubar A good post and well worth the read - It applies in Udon for sure but I feel fairly confident in saying it applies to all areas of Thailand.

(off topic a little but if that is (Dave) Corolla is still going strong if not Corolla still going strong but it will mean nothing to OP)

  6. without revealing the number of actual years:

    Vietnam - nice

    Papua New Guinea -ugly

    Philippines -nicer

    finally Thailand in 1982 -beautiful

returned 16 years later and treated like it was only yesterday

wifey asked to come back home after 10 years in Oz

    here we are

(nice, ugly, nicer, beautiful) refers to the two main things in life Girls & Girls

  7. A definate but polite NO.

I have been burnt (singed) my wife does not like to say No. Now I say No sorry we will not lend now due to a number of outstanding non performing loans.

Also you need to update on the local interest rates.

Small time money lenders 60% - and that is why once Thais borrow they have difficulty repayin - a lot of them stiil have the original amount borrowed ourstanding and pay the monthly interest quite often doing a bunk when it gets too much for them (mind wise).

Big time money lenders short term 200 to 300%

    Once bitten twice shy. :o

  8. Steven you may have missed the lead in -Shift2k Your post makes very good sense .

Correct me if I am wrong in thinking the post by Shift2k was about Teaching in Thailand without a HSD.

Sreven you have your opinion and I have mine re the use of "newbie" and I do not agree with your perception of "alleged flame war that did not happen".

In regard to personal attack nothing personal but if you choose to put down new posters or members who only post on the odd occaison then also be prepared to be critiqued.

Credentials - defensive if that is your opinion so be it!

  9. tywais sorry mate that distinction must go to WhiteShiva:

In TV, you are a newbie until you have posted a certain number of times (50?) - unfortunately, the contents of your posts has nothing to do with your status - a post consisting of a single smilicon still counts as much as a well written and informative post. ......

The seniority system is part of the forums make up - my point is we constantly read of a poster being labelled "newbie" which is written in the context of a putdown.

I agree with the first part of Ijustwannateach's response "Some one who is new, I'd always thought. If you've only joined a forum (or started reading it) recently, you're a newbie. But this does mean your input is not as important as the next persons.

Strongly disagree with the concept of :

there are those who join a forum and rarely post or only do so after a long period of time- these are lurkers. Once again my opinion only.

Members who enjoy reading and maybe offering the odd input are not Lurkers. they are members the same as we all are.

The following is surely not a TV distinction:

In this forum, there's a bit of a distinction between a FORUM newbie and a TEACHING newbie. I'd been teaching for years before joining this forum, so I was a forum newbie but not a teaching newbie. Now I'm not either of them.

Just an opinion no doubt supported by some other distinct members too.

  10. Seems to me that in the Volunteer thread they wound up discussing the relevant law and came to the correct conclusion; that work done voluntarily is still illegal unless some paperwork is done.  I'm still trying to figure out how your post relates to the topic of Teaching In Thailand without a high school diploma.

    Steven

Well done I wish I was as sure of the lottery numbers as I am of your blinkered responses.

Please go back to my first paragraph where I commented on shift2k's response on Teaching in Thailand without a High School Diploma.

The constant reference to "newbies", initial posts, first posts by posters such as yourself attempting to downgrade any poster who does not aspire for seniority by numbers of posts submitted speaks volumes in itself.

My reference to Volunteering was an example of "flaming" newbies receive from self promoted experts and yes Steven I have been involved in the Education field for many years ( Australia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, and Thailand).

  11. Rolo must be shopping around Thanon K-S  :o

It is amazing how bad some of the fakes are there and the attitude of the forgers.

Saw some degrees from the same university as me, only problem is, they were printed the wrong way on the form. The real degrees are printed in "Portrait" or the sheet is vertical, these were Landscape or the sheet being left to right. I would like to see someone explain that one.

The other one was I had a forger tel me my Thai Drivers lisences were fake. Why, because they had consecutive numbers and some of the colours didn't look right. Of course they had come from the Transport ministary the week before.

I believe this will be my third post to this wonderful forum. Let me first say that I love reading the forum, and have received countless bits of information over the past year. I must say though, that many of you are down right condescending. It's not enough that you feel the need to comment at all, but then must continue to tear into another poster with out any regard for their feelings. The above post was most likely the product of a "Native" English teacher, yet appears to be no more grammatically correct than that of Mr. Tomazi.

I agree 100% that in order to teach, one must be more knowledgeable than those whom he/she will be teaching. A college degree is another matter, but the lack of a high school diploma says a lot about an individuals character. Just leave it at that. I do not know Mr. Tomazi, and will not begin to judge him. I feel strongly that any person should refrain from teaching without fulfilling even the most basic of our educational standards. Does this make him a "troll", or a "loser"? Does it mean that he is "stupid" or lacking intelligence? Of course not. I am the first of my family to finish both high school, and the University. Both of my parents are uneducated by most of your standards, yet are both very successful business people. They have made a life time of educating themselves. They provided a wonderful home life and raised me very well. They provided more than I could have ever dreamed up for myself. That being said, I would not want them to teach History, Science , or the like, to my children( or yours). While they both speak very proper English, they are not qualified to teach it; nor would consider doing so.

Let the posters make their posts. It's a free forum where people can pose questions to those of us who might be more knowledgeable in certain areas. If you don't like it, don't reply to it. If it's a stupid question, don't give a stupid answer. If it's not worth your time, don't waste your time. There is no reason to to make a person feel like an idiot. Some people are ignorant( in the best sense of the word) and truly feel as if they are asking a legit question. Give them a legit answer, if you have one, and leave it that. It's not my intention to wax "almighty" on everyone, just offering my humble oppinion.

It might be a good idea to add a spell check to the forum,it would make most of us appear more educated.

Shift2k Your post makes very good sense do not be put off by the use of the term "newbie" I think you will find there are several posters that are "trolls" and they are normally nipped in the bud by the Admin/Moderators.

KK's response is correct and he /she gives very good advice especially in the area of teaching in Thailand the important thing that shows out with KK is the advice is moderated with/by experience.

Regarding some of the other respondees - it makes you wonder as to their level of sincerety/commitment - the heat may well be the excuse - but excuse it is - they complain about wages, conditions etc and if you dare use that old chestnut " then why are you here (Thailand)" indignant they become and have offered the comeback:

    # that is the reason for the forum "to complain about Thailands shortcomings"

    -

(extract from another post - I am sure your initial post indicated that the point of a forum like this was not to pat ourselves on the back and say what a rosy life we lead, isnt it wonderful. Its to sort out all the problems and ask for solutions and ways round the daily unecessary crap that the thai bureaucracy think is important.

See post Teaching 12 In Thailand by Sonong1 for full details"

My answer to that is "<deleted>" .

Take the time to browse the "teaching" posts and I am sure you will recognise the trend. eg a recent post on "Volunteer English Teacher" they all but had the OP hung and quartered and yet only today I posted "English Conversation ---------Volunteering" and pointed out where there is a will there is a way - The certificate of appreciation received used the words "trainer" of "English for Tourism" More importantly it was signed by The Director of the School and the Director of the Office of xxxxxxxxxxx Educational Service Area Zone x.

I have just reread some of the responses and "Newbie" begs the question What is a newbie? I think it may be the opening for a new post and let the discussion continue from there.

  12. One persons view on Volunteering

Spent last weekend in Korat (Chok Chai) Frid, Sat, Sun volunteering at a Government School with 9 other "farang's". It was an excellent weekend covering conversation skill expansion with students, Thai teachers, parents and some local business owners (all together approx 120). A very rewarding experience for all.

Our hosts went out of their way to ensure we had a good weekend and the true Thai culture shone through.

"Ajarn Ying" advertised on www.ajarn.com and took a huge risk with 10 previously unknown "farangs" arriving" I am happy to say her gamble paid off in diamonds - our input was greatly appreciated and many new friendships were forged.

On the legal side of the coin it was interesting that the weekend was sponsored as English for Tourism and copies of our details submitted to cover the accomodation and food accounts. This I believe shows that there are ways "volunteering" can be legal with no concerns re No WP.

  13. Bino beat me by a fraction Yes sir E for writing materials and A for no-movement. some mothers do have em !:o

The Mask Try the post office they may deal in bulk? or give Baht & Sold a try the owner/publisher seems to have a handle on these things. Other than that try one of the large mail out companies for the name of their supplier of stationery.

  14. I would like to use my freetime for teaching Thai language for foreigner at Silom, Sukhumvit, Thonburi area. I'm not fluent in english much but would like to help myself for using my bad english too.

I can teach only Sat-Sun. If someone interested in learning Thai can reach me at [email protected]

Can negotiate for price later ...  :o

i wanted to learn thai language , can you pls tell me how can i contact you for learning thai language.

I'm guessing by the e-mail address which was provided...

Two ways to look at it ...you pay him to teach you Thai, or you pay him and you teach him English. Good buissiness nevertheless :D

Davey I would second your suggestion but before paulyeo1

moves on to learning Thai he/she may care to take a re-course in English.

The yearly warning of" Buyer Beware" still applies as no past students (if any exist) have come forth to sing Good or Not so Good experience.

  15. So what exactly are you talking about here?

    cv

Firstly they were two separate posts placed in General but it appears all embassy related topics go here?

The first post was a follow up to the treatment I received at the Australian Embassy 2 weeks ago see post Aust Embassy Brickbats.

The second was a general post in its own right about the efficient and courteous service by the security staff at the Aust Embassy.

  16. I think you actually covered the answer - you said Bangkok- but did not specify suburb Try the same banks in areas frequented by Faramgs Bang Lam Phu accounts with Bangkok & Kasikorn no prob;ems.

Up country once again should not present any problems called into the Siam City or Commercial in Udon Thani to change some dollars into baht the Thai lady spoke good english and invited me to open an account if I moved into the area.

  17. Security at all embassies has been upgraded due to world events and this is no secret.

Aust Embassy no difference new procedures - my comment is the courteous but efficient way it was handled by the Thai security team.

Several visits recently so pre-emting the need to empty pockets and have sources of beeps investigated was met with a smile and pleasantries - A job being well done with no beg your pardons for the necessary checks just courteous and efficient.

One for Samran ran across one of the "leave a lot to be desired types" in the foyer of the consulate area Khun I work at the Aust Embassy had passed him off to the Khun Sumone fill in nice move on her part. Maybe the security check could include a swim in the moat for certain customers - actually the young Thai Lass with him would have benefited from a dip too.

  18. Yes returned to the scene of the drime yesterday. Unfortunately Khun Sumone must have had a day off and I had to face up to Khun I work at the Aust Embassy.

After an initial falter things sailed smoothly and I am happy to say I can report that Khun I work at the Aust embassy looked after me in a very efficient way even smiled (actually smirked I think when she relieved me of the Baht 600+ for an updated residential stat dec (Passport number has changed). Dearest rubber stamp I have ever seen (now for that type of money I could obtain a gold embossed version at KSR.

Living by the theory of only talk of people from your own experience Khun I work at the Aust Embassy counter manner has changed. ( The thai couple behind me would no doubt relate a different story but that is not my concern or is it?)

  19. My usual daily attire is rubber boots up to the knee, long faded (from age, not the fashion fade type) blue pants (Thai style with draw string), and grubby stained t-shirt.  If you wear anything nicer the crabs in the rice paddy just laugh at you.

Sounds like my wife's night time attire :D Who mentioned crabs? :o

No argument frm me neat and tidy as the ship goes - but Guys you are not only battling the yobo but also the generation Gap Last week visiting Khon Kaen got out of the lift/elevator and there in the lobby was an elderly Thai couple with either the last of their offspring or their chidrens offspring two beautiful young (19?) thai girls.

Both girls well dressed jeans etc one had a T shirt emblazoned with "I like to Fukc" Beimg a caring farang I spoke quitely and asked did she understand what was written on her T shirt she very nicely smiled and said yes but the rude meaning is spelt differently!

I smiled and went on my way thinking i must be getting old.

  20. I know that westerners are used to large settlement amounts for wrongful deaths in their counties of origin, but is that good?  How much should be paid if a child dies from some preventable cause?  Should the company be bankrukpted and put out of business...even if the same danger is present in virtually all shopping centers, stores, homes, and gov't offices throughout the country?  How much money can actually make up for the death of a child?  1 million baht? 10 million baht? all the tea in china?  Maybe there should be more lawyers in Thailand getting bigger settlements and bigger fees for themselves?

I guess the main question here is, "How much is the death of a child worth to you?"

No the question is what or how much will it take to ensure the store, company or individual takes it as a serious preventable incident. Lets be deadly serious here a young life has been lost - let a true and accountable investigation be conducted (TiT it wont happen) next time it may well be you or me too late then to reflect.

Heng in my opinion out of order thats why in Australia a speed limit of 40kph applies at schools during the main arrival & leaving times as responsible adults we are required to look out for the young " even animals do it out of instinct".

Satire has no place in a post of this nature. I am not a Mod nor Admin just hopefully a compassionate as the next type bloke!
