  1. Someone mentioned playing this course in another thread so I checked out there website. It appears to be a beautiful resort--with prices to match! I'm just curious to hear from anyone who has played it. What did you think of the course? Do you have to pay the posted green fees or are there deals to be had. Anyone bit on the 1 million baht membership?! :o

I played another Nicklaus course in the Khoa Yai ( Khoa Yai )area that had a mock-up at the clubhouse of a housing development but it didn't appear that anyone was actually building. And the condition of the course was rather disappointing. I hope this one does better.

  2. Glühwein in december

I spent six years in Berlin and some of my fondest memories are walking through the Grünewald in the winter and stopping at a stand for a glass of Glühwein!!

My desire to retire in Thailand is based both on the economics you describe, and to please my wife who followed me for two decades while the USAF sent me all over the place!!

  3. This is a bit of a tangent in that my only experience in the PI is having a couple beers at the NCO club on Clark while on a layover flying to

Thailand. I just wanted to throw in that while I was stationed in Thailand in '75, I worked with two guys who hadn't been back to the U.S. except for a couple of short trips in ten years. They spent that whole time doing the "Asia Triangle" - Thailand, Taiwan, and the P.I. They had a lot of great things to say about all three, but they both enjoyed LOS the most.

  4. I am 55 and I'm ready right now! But I'm still a ways off because my wife and I are heavily involved in raising our grandchildren. I'd love to go now while I have the health to really enjoy it. I have a low-stress but boring job that I could leave with no regret. So it looks like I'll be attending a high school graduation, and then boarding a one-way flight to LOS the next day! :o

  5. I was just curious if Thailand had plans to switch their broadcast services exclusively to high defenition any time soon. Here in the United States, you'll need to purchase a high defenition television or a converter for an old analog tv by the end of 2008.

Sorry but you're making a common error. The U.S. is converting from analog (NTSC) to Digital (requires an ATSC tuner). High Definition is a different subject altogether.

  6. I can't imagine the quality of a slingbox being too good? Am I right?

I tried Strongview's Slingbox for awhile and I was pretty amazed at the quality of the video. I was watching on a fast cable box connection from the U.S. so it that may have had a lot to do with it. I also tried viewing it on a pocket pc phone but had no luck making a connection.

  7. I saw this on the net, what say you?

    Taoism: shit happens

Buddhism: if shit happens, it isn't really shit

Islam: if shit happens, it is the will of Allah

Catholicism: if shit happens, you deserve it

Judaism: why does this shit always happen to us?

Atheism: I don't believe this shit

I say this appears on Thaivisa in excess of 15,000 times!

  8. Well I'm going to take this a little off track but still related. A couple years ago, my son's mother-in-law reported my wife and I to a child protection agency saying that we were beating the girl. It was absolutely nuts! Luckily the people at the agency knew that mixed race kids (she is half Thai) have "Mongoloid spots." If you are not familiar with them, it's a blue-tint to the skin usually just above the buttocks. We still had to go down and get interviewed. We were cleared immediately -- but I would like to beat the mother-in-law!

  9. I downloaded the Windows Vista advisor and there are loads of things I have to upgrade or remove before I can proceed!! :o What is so frustrating is that it does look good! :D Whats your experience?

I didn't upgrade--I just bought a new lap that had Home Premium on it. I like it so far. The only problem I ran into was trying to run an old version of Agent (1.93) which I use to read Usenet. It wouldn't let me delete any messages and gave me an error message about not being able to modify the database. I ended up upgrading to their latest version since they were offering a $15 deal, and it was advertised as Vista compliant. Then I read on Forte's webpage that there is a solution to my problem.

    Bottom line--happy camper so far.

  10. Big raves about the long ball to R. Wayne. <deleted>? Manning lofted the ball to a WFO (wide f'in open) receiver, off target. Wayne was so open he made a good adjustment on the ball, waited for it and then waltzed in. I could have put that ball up, blown coverage by the safety to the max.

You failed to mention he had a defensive player's arm wrapped around his waist and had to throw without stepping.

Personally, I would have made Adai and Rhodes co-MVPs.

  11. If your monthly pension is less than 65k and you want to know what your minimum balance in the bank needs to be simply multiply your monthly pension by 12 then subtract that amount from 800k. The result will be your minimum requirement in the bank. My experience at Chiang Mai Immigration is that even if you have the full 65k coming in every month, they want to see a few hundred thousand in the bank.

Got it! I never thought about it before because by my calculations, I project my retirement income to be more than enough. Of course, I did those calculations at 42 to 1, then 40 to 1, then .............. :o

    Thanks!

  12. Hi..

For those who wire money from the USA to LOS..

A quick survey - What are you really being charged by your US Bank..?

My California Bank wants to charge me an International Wire Transfer Fee of a flat $30 up front. Seems a bit steep..??

    Thanks

    ChrisP

I send $1K every month--SWIFT from my local Wells Fargo Bank. The paperwork I sign says the charge is $35 but they only take $15 from my account. I haven't lodged a formal protest! :o

  13. Here's a quote from the website of the resort where my house is located:

If you are looking for the perfectly relax with worth in your life.

Phupimarn resort Farm and Spa is the paradise that you look for.

We wish you come to touch with magical on this paradise that over your imagine by your self.

  14. I have not bothered with any restraunt in KK since Hendrik left, He had the best damm food that KK has ever seen and most likely ever will. I no longer live around there so now when Im in town I go straight to the McDonalds, it's the only one Isarn.

There was one in "The Mall" in Korat when I was last there. Did it close?

Korat=Khon Kaen, close but no cigar :o

I was responding to the statement "it's the only one (in) Isarn." Last time I checked, that include Korat.

  16. A good story.

I am trying to do the same and succeeding, but not as fast as you. :D

I'm fighting the same battle without a lot of success.

I have lost over 50 pounds twice in my life. Once when the U.S. Air Force sent me to Thailand in '75 and again when they sent me to Korea in '83. So the solution is obvious--get my butt back to Thailand! :o

  17. During the week, I happpened to take a look at the book about the secret war in Laos, "The Ravens".

It has some photos that may have been "servicemens' snaps".

It would be a pity if there are these sort of photos of life around Udon in existence, but never get seen again.

Try googling "Udorn RTAFB" and you'll get links to several personal web pages with pictures of Udon (nee Udorn). I was stationed a few k's down the road and was there as the base was shutting down.
