  1.

hello i have a flight booked out of Bangkok on the 20th, my visa ends on the 18th

what with all the new changes, clampdown and paranoia that's going with it i've been looking to see if this is now a "very serious" offence..

i can't find anything online so i'm on here asking..

Is tnot hat you can't find, is that you haven't even searched.

It is not serious except that triggers high blood pressure in some members.

Pay the fine or get a 7-days extension at any immigration office for Bt. 1,900.

do i have to get my extension the day my current one expires ( on Monday? or can i get it before?

    thank you :)

so, will it be 1000 baht and 1 thumbscrew per day?

should i wear my bicycle clips just in case?

  3. so with (i felt) not long enough time on my visa to get a new passport ( i have only 1 blank page left ) in Thailand, i'd made a plan to go to Cambodia on the 1 month tourist visa (unfortunatelyi need 2 full blank pages for the 12 month visa so i cannot get it) , get my passport there, pay overstay etc.

'officially' i'd gathered it takes 6-10 weeks to order a new passport out here... i'd be willing to pay 1-2 months overstay fines in Cambodia (where i've been told it's just a formality, no nasty over-stay stamps on your passport)....

now i'm hearing it took someone 6 (SIX) months to get a new passport sent out, that's just crazy!

i'm now thinking of buying at ticket back to London and doing it, even though it'll probably take up most of my money so i'll have to stay for a while, but it sounds a better deal than getting stuck in Cambodia and having to pay up to 5 months overstay!

can anyone can shed any light on the current passport renewal time out here? up to 6 months... is this true?

my visa here expires on August 18.... squeeky bum time!

Current overseas processing time for overseas passport applications in Thailand is 10 weeks plus, with a few reports of a quicker turn-around with significant string puling (MPs, Contacts in Embassy/ HMPO).

Worst case reported to this forum to date is 18 weeks - that's 4.5 months.

So unless you are eligible for a one year Extension of Permission to Stay in Thailand, then the trip back to the UK is your only serious option, other than overstay, or some lucky breaks combined with a 95 GBP ETD.

thank you, i'm leaving Thailand, it's either Cambodia or UK

  5. I've found the best reaction to 'negative incidents' with a Thai male is no reaction at all. Keep still and keep a poker face. It unnerves them. And they will leave.

The 'no reaction' technique takes practice. Try it. It works.

PS: But, just in case, be ready to run like hell!

the "no reaction" technique is by far the best way to deal with aggressive people where-ever you are

  6. thais harbour rage internally ,like most, but unlike most, thais have a sense of ownership in thailand, forigners are just toursits and as tourists we have no rights.you will never win in thailand,if you are LUCKY you may break even..but that is rare

    i have been told and heard MANY TIMES the following;

if you ever get in an altercation with a Thai; do not shout at them or show any aggression or anger... back-off slowly and hope for the best.

  7. I'm curious if the farangs always lose the fight, or if it only makes the news when they do.

How many stories of some foreigner snatching one of these guys up and smashing him?

I never hear that, but it seems like the physical advantage is generally in the farang's favor, atleast a good amount of the time.

i do not think a farang can do things like that here and get away with it... not to say it hasn't ever happened...

  8. whilst it was wrong for the American to react the way he did ( in a country where it is considered to very rude to do so) it was still wrong for the Thai to do what he did... it was a total act of cowardice to attack someone unarmed with such a dangerous weapon, in this country it does happen a lot and it must be said part of the reason why they act in this way is because they are so repressed/unable to let out emotions/feelings, they are at times like a time-bomb waiting to go off..

How did the American react? The quote was, "angry words were exchanges which enraged Khun Prasi." Who said what; do you know?

in this country letting out anger or aggression to anyone is considered very rude, they don't do it so we're expected not to.. it's an emotion we're expected to hold onto/surpress..... we all know it's not a good thing to do but when living in many Asian countries that's how it is......

it's no secret, most farang know this... and most farang have been warned that getting involved in any outward forms of aggression whether it be physical or verbal can lead to seriously bad consequences in a country where the men can at times act like petulant children, where they never fight fair (almost always more of them, or/and with weapons)...

interactions here can be very testing, especially on the road.. Thais will always just pull out without looking, it can be like Russian roulette, especially with the automatic motorbikes..

Thailand on the whole is a safe country, i don't get **** i used to get in my own country, the rule is to not get involved with local politics, be careful who you deal with in business, and don't shout or show aggression towards them.. i've never had ANY trouble with Thais but i have come very close a few times when i've behaved just like the American did, and yes i'm lucky.

The OP "angry words were exchanges which enraged Khun Prasi" You wrote, "whilst it was wrong for the American to react the way he did." How did the American react? Who said what; how do you know?

The OP " angry words were exchanged" between the two = the American man was verbally aggressive ( letting out anger ) which in this country is not a good thing to do and can lead to..... hold on a minute i seem to be repeating myself here.? do you not get it?

"Hua Hin Immigration is from today also enforcing the requirements that you and your landlord (condominium owner, house owner etc) must report to Immigration within 24 hours of moving in to a new address. On your arrival card you already reported your place of stay, and if that changes you need to visit Immigration and report your new address."

......kind of a hassle for those on a tour of Thailand?

It's a great money maker for the police - no id/no reporting presence in another province...a cool 2000 baht fine. I don't see how any of this helps tourism.

well i guess now they've managed to stop huge amount of the Thai tourist industry coming ( i.e. the peeps who like to come and stay and live long term on tourist visas) they have to find a new way of getting all that lost money back??

yet another example of how they fail to look at or understand the long-term effects of their actions/legislations...

  12. for all those thinking of going over to Malaysia to get a new passport, i've just recieved the following information from the British Embassy in KL:

"Passport renewals are now completed in the UK. The British High Commission doesn’t issue full passports here.

We may be able to issue you with an Emergency Travel Document, should you need to travel whilst your passport is away for renewal. Do let us know, and we will provide you with full information on how to apply."

so you cannot get a new/replacement passport in Malaysia..

  13. it doesn't necessarily have to be negative and until you learn the language properly you'll never really know, and just like anyone anywhere who's trying to wind you up/pick on you (if that's what you think they're doing) the best form of attack/defence is to completely ignore them.

  14. A similar thread came up recently.

If you fly into Phnom Penh - Cambodia, you can ask for, and should receive, a 12 month multi-entry business visa, on arrival. Cost is about $290.

This is a full page visa, but you will be able to stay in Cambodia until your new UK passport is ready for collection, and if you are caught up in the Thai visa run crack down, you can a least stay in Cambodia until you are allowed to return to Thailand.

Another option is Malaysia. You will receive a 90 day stamp on arrival, however, if your UK passport in not ready for collection within the 90 days, you will have to leave Malaysia and come back. This is no big problem, just extra travel.

You may be able to extend from within Malaysia, but I do not know if you can. Perhaps another member will know.

Up to 3 months for a new UK passport is really poor service.

In the other thread, it is also mentioned that you will need to show proof of address to the Embassy for a new UK passport, as well as other documents. There was some debate as to the ease, or otherwise, of getting a new UK passport, whilst outside of the UK.

unfortunately ( for me) the business visa is 1 page which is for a month then 1 or more pages re. 1,3,6,11 month extensions so i can only come in on the 1 month e-visa which i'm told i can extend for 1 month, then pay overstay if the passport takes longer

the long wait is because the passport office in UK has been changed from London to Liverpool

    thanks for the info

    Read my post again.

The 12 month multi-entry business visa for Cambodia can be obtained at the Phnom Penh Airport, on a arrival. That's a full page visa and good for 12 months. You do not have to arrange the e-visa prior to arrival.

Most go into Cambodia on the 1 month tourist visa, and then go to a travel agent and get the 12 month business visa. That's 2 pages in your passport, and you only have 1 left.

It's not widely advertised that you can get the 12 month business visa on arrival, but you can. Well, you could, as of late 2013. I doubt it has changed.

NamKanMan are you saying i can buy the whole 12 months on one go = 1 page at the airport on arrival?

  16. I don't understand why anyone would let their passport get down to just one blank page or less than 6 months validity while travelling

earlier this year i had to unexpectedly make a lot of trips, most of which needed 1 page sticker-stamps,before that i had 5/6 blank pages, i would normally have have seen the problem occuring earlier.. just bad luck it's happened at the worse time ( i.e. Thai immigration crackdown + UK passport office f.up)..

i'm definately going to get the bigger/more pages passport this time!

  17. I would be interested to know what the timeframe is in Cambodia for getting a renewal.

Given that the issues are at HMPO you are still looking at 8 weeks.

You haven't mentioned on what basis you are staying in Thailand or why you are leaving in one month ?

e-visa via Poipet/Hat Lek - or flying in - takes up no space in the passport. Just the entry and exit stamps.

    You are still faced with 56 days @, say, $20 a night accommodation = £600 = a return flight.

i am looking more at Malaysia but Cambodia is possible... u can (i'm told) get another month ontop of the 1 month tourist visa, there's a lot cheap accom. than $20 a night.. $5 overstay and no nasty stamp (i'm told) on leaving...

and then there's Malaysia... still waiting to hear reports from anyone who's got into either country with one blank page?

Not a problem going into Malaysia. I went into Malaysia with half a page. The Malaysians went and put the stamp right in the middle of the remaining space so I was a bit concerned coming back to Thailand as there was not enough room left for a clear stamp. Thai immigration just put the stamp just put the stamp in the largest space just overlapping adjacent stamps.

that's fantastic news.. i'll get 3 months tourist visa in Malaysia.. thanks for letting me know Sandy :)
