I mentioned in an earlier post about the vehicle that hit the motorbike and rider.
Here it is, car head on, in background where people are would I guess be point of impact
Appears the cop is pointing at point of impact in the lane prior to the gap in the median for u-turn, this 'may' suggest the motorbike was hit from behind by a vehicle traveling in the same direction
We will likely never know.

The guy looks dodgy as heck. What kind of lowlife scum walks around dressed like that?
If you followed the regular 'what I wear to immigration' and ' why I don't wear trousers' threads, you'd understand that's the dress standard of over half the forum posters.
And don't even consider the 'i don't own underwear' crew (another 10%)

^ that section of Highway 317 is two lanes each way separated by concrete median strip. It's 'open road' whatever that speed km/h limit is, not that many adhere to listed speed limits in our exp driving there.
There is also a third short 'U-turn' access lane on each side, so effectively six-lanes at that point where the accident occurred.
I note this thread heading has been translated as 'while making u-turn' however I am unsure about this. He was in a u-turn lane, apparently, but stationary or moving, don't know.
There were several Thai news reports, one indicated he may have been waiting in that third lane before making his turn when hit by a car, but that's not confirmed.
I saw coverage of the 'after' which featured the car, appeared to be a Vios, embedded front-on into the opposite end of the median strip with the u-turn signpost mid-bonnet but again, no report I saw stated whether he'd been hit from behind or head-on, or just why the car had lost control to the extent it had crashed, just a police spokesman stating there had been numerous accidents at that point of the new section of highway due to high speed.
If hit from behind it wouldn't matter if he were 71 or 21.
Well never know.
Conjecture is just that.

The deceased was David Dennis Coquelin (UK).
He leaves a wife and 14 year old son, Gary.
David Coquelin's funeral was held over three days at Wat Wang Daeng, near the family home in Ban Wang Daeng, Wang Nam Yen. The accident in which he died had taken place outside the wat, on Highway 317 which is the main highway Chanthaburi-Sa Kaeo.
It's open-road at that point, we drive it fairly regularly, and lived about 25km away from Wang Nam Yen in 2010-11 before moving to Chanthaburi, it's a busy highway especially for trucks, and we choose our travel times and routes to avoid the worst of it, not an option for a local, where a slight lapse of judgment by a driver/rider may be deadly.
No I didn't know this man, we can't recall ever seeing another farang there as we'd certainly have said hello; there was an Englishman (now deceased) near here we visited often, but many people choose to keep to themselves.
My thoughts for the family.

Eight pages mostly of posturing from the TV 'Sons of Arthritis' gang, a classic forum p-ing contest, talk of roundabouts (there is not one involved), and the classic Thai-blaming.
Not a shred of compassion for the deceased or his family.
See you next post...

It was a semi-automatic of some kind with a moderator fitted... hence the length.
Thai news identified the weapon as a Heckler and Koch USP 9mm with silencer, military and police issue firearm. They could be wrong, but does seem a very specific description.
He left with over 500,000 baht worth of gold
The police reward of 100,000 baht has been boosted by a gold dealers group and individuals, there is now a 240,000 reward for information leading to his capture dead or alive, as police are authorised to use lethal force
None of this of course is consolation to the bereaved families.

Officers have been instructed to use utmost caution as the suspect possesses dangerous firearms.
Use of lethal force is allowed if necessary.” -

I guess at least 2 couldn't swim. What mind would go on water if they cant swim? Drinking probably involved. Rip
Answer here:
A survivor, identified as Narongrith Meekhun, 21, told police that he and three other friends were drinking and took a kayak onto the lake. He also said none of them were wearing life vests and had been drinking heavily.

The 'canoe' is a sit-on-top, photos from a second Sanook article shows the three on it, plus when it was recovered
Article states it sank, looking at the second photo there appears to be repairs on the side, note these sit-on-tops are molded plastic not fibreglass, repairing other than with proper plastic welding, ie using car repair 'bog' are doomed to fail (my guess, see the white repaired area on the orange)
And there should be watertight covers on those two open hatches. Death trap on the water.
My exp, one this size would have a maximum carrying capacity of up to 140-160kg (appears to be a 'double' or even a children's triple, I'm unfamiliar with what model it is), so in that respect would have stayed afloat ok with the three smallish males aboard, though as pic shows, low in the waterline, and definitely would not sink (article states it sank) unless it was holed

A Christmas tale from Chanthaburi.
This photo was taken at the Laem Sing refugee camp, Ko Proet, Chanthaburi coast, (about 20km from our home) in 1980, refugees here mainly Vietnamese Christians fleeing persecution, but also Cambodian and Chinese.
Photo gets a mention in a recenty published book, The People We Wanted To Forget by Michael Harpold (his photo)
From the book:
QuoteBuilt by the refugees themselves, it served as both a church and a school. Three weeks after Christmas, the decorations remained up.
"They're all we have" the refugees told the author.
"This is the Baptist church. There's a Catholic church also. They use the buildings as schools too. Some if the refugees are teachers. They never stop teaching their kids. They have English classes for the adults too"
Happy Christmas everyone.

If it is the "White Island" off the coast of Tauranga it was always banned for civilians to land on ?
An estimated 10,000 people visit the privately-owned site each year, which is New Zealand's most active volcano.
Access to the island has been controlled through permits since 1995.
White Island Tours, which runs daily boat and walking tours of the volcano, would not comment on the conditions under which they would cancel tours.
White Island Tours publishes the volcanic alert level on its website and says tours "operate through varying alert levels".

No signs of life, unlikely survivors are left, police say
05:19, Dec 10 2019
The latest on Tuesday morning
Just after midnight on Tuesday, police said that flights over White Island after the volcanic eruption had detected no signs of life and it was believed that there were no remaining survivors.
It is not known how many people are missing, presumed dead on the island as rescue crews have not been able to reach them so far, but it is thought to be above 10, and possibly more than 20.
Five people have been confirmed dead. These were among the 23 individuals evacuated from the island immediately after the eruption, which happened at 2.11pm on Monday. The remaining 18 survivors are injured, police said.

Five of the injured are senior students from our daughter's school, they were going to Bangkok to visit Srinakharinwirot university with a view to studying there from mid-2020.
The accident was announced at school on Saturday morning, upsetting for students on what was teacher-parent day. Understand they will be ok, the 23yr old was a uni pharmacy student traveling from Chanthaburi.

Once you get to the border, either at Daung/Ban Laem or Psar Prum/Ban Pakkard:
Ban Pakkard
1 options for minivan to Pong Nam Ron on Highway 317 (about 35km) and take bus from here to Chanthaburi city
2 minivan to Chanthaburi city - used to be 120b, likely 150+ now
Timetables ... minivans from Ban Laem used to be hourly during the day but it's about 4yrs since I've been there. Ban Pakkard is less popular they may wait till van is full.
Note the minivans to Chan city will stop at a small terminal opposite Robinson's in Chantanamit on the east side of the river.
This is not Chan bus station, you'll need a taxi to the main bus station across the river and central city area, or could walk in maybe 45 minutes
Buses hourly to Bangkok from here, Cherdchai the operator, plus the government bus service which I think is still morning only
Reminder that you're unlikely to meet anyone who speaks English
