I believe nearly 95% of the Thais never filed an income tax return in their lives.

Don't know that %, but for anyone earning under 12,500 baht a month, that's 500 a day for four six day weeks, well above the daily minimum rates, they'd be exempt:

    Annual:

    Income Band
    0  – 150,000 Exempt
    150,000 – 300,000 5%
    300,000 – 500,000    10%
    500,000 – 750,000    15%
    750,000 – 1,000,000    20%
    1,000,000 – 2,000,000    25%
    2,000,000 – 5,000,000    30%
    5,000,001 +    35%

  2. The difference between salary and earnings. My partner is an accountant for a company of 155 staff. Only around 20 are on permanent/fixed salary, with 130 employed on daily rates between 400-1200 baht per day.

As it's an engineering / roading business there's always work for the professional staff whereas the site workers are subject to weather restrictions.

Two new graduate engineers started in September on initial salary of 22,000 baht/month. Different roles also get allowances - vehicle, fuel, accomodation subsidy, bonuses, which keeps the gross amount down.

Not Chiang Mai specific as the OP requested, but the Bank of Thailand provides average wage data based on company wages deposits nationwide - doubt it has changed since this as wages didn't increase during Covid, at 31 December 2020 it was just over 16,000 baht / month.

But, yes, another but, there are still plenty of registered companies paying employees in cash (refer the 3.4 million baht payroll robbery in Chonburi last month). Then all the cash-only self-employed and small businesses who don't furnish income data, or pay tax.

So after all that a lot of guesswork.

Except to say she found that 103k median figure impossible to accept, based upon some expat executive survey at a guess.

How do we know the poor schmucks weren't there just drinking?

    Maybe it is a shakedown..

Because the two others 'customers' were caught having girl/s taken to their hotel room.

As they are both charged with crimes related to under 15 child as well as other offences this would suggest the 12 year old.

    Clear enough.

The only 'forcing' done will most likely be by the parents, getting the daughter to send some money home!

These children, as young as 12, were being taken by the bar owner to his 'clients' in Pattaya hotels.

    If you think that's OK, well . . .

There was a very similar situation in 2015 when an Englishman, 70s, based in Sa Kaeo and his wife - with a bar in Pattaya - were charged with under-age procurement; she served 3 yrs 9 months of a 5 year jail sentence; he died at his home pending his own court appearance - reported as 'natural causes' but more likely self-inflicted. Unrelated but he was a regular poster on this forum under its previous name, a regular Philippines tourist with his Pattaya 'friends'. A pity he took the easy way out.

Also - the Thai Police site lists the Brish man's surname as Thacker.

Yeah, and a Thai cop will not understand, in my case, what HR means... even worse if fron NZ, which only has class numbers, eg Class 1, Class 2 etc.

My NZ DL has the class category number accompanied by pictures of the class represented - for me, car and motorcycle.

  6. Incredible.

We're south of you - Chanthaburi; from about 6.45 this evening we had the heaviest downpour/ strong winds in our 11 yrs here; passed over in around 40 minutes.

I'm thinking this is my fault - today I declared end of rain season and started a garden tidy-up and weed spraying.

  7. A great fightback from 1-3 down v Dominican Republic last night, to win 3-2 on tiebreaker (31-29, 16-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-11) and qualifying for the second round.

    Schedule

    v Türkiye - Won

    v Poland - Lost

    v Croatia - Won

    v Korea - Won

    v Dominican Republic - Won

    Round 2

    v Canada (world ranked 15th) - 4 October

    v Germany (14) - 5 October

    v Serbia (4) - 7 October

    v USA (1) - 8 October

Back in the day in Issan the truck used to come to the village and villagers pointed out the strays to the man who collected said stray/nuisance dogs. Villagers were given plastic goods by the nice dog man. Dogs went on trip to Vietnam. Result: everybody happy.

Once upon a time - from when we lived in Sa Kaeo 2010, the plastic bowl/bucket exchange pickup truck

I should imagine that, when the vehicle came to a sudden stop, the armoured safe kept going........

How did the BiB know how much cash it contained?

Thai news reported it as being "up to ten million" - maybe that's their starting balance to go out topping up ATMs, depends how far into the run they were as to how much in the safe - they'd also be collecting from the deposit part of each ATM.

As you mention, police wouldn't know

  10. July 2019 my partner was cycling to the gym, about 500m from home hit from the side by a dog, no warning, knocked off and hit the road; bitten on the leg, plus grazes and bruising. Company insurance covered all medical and lost-time costs incl the rabies vaccinations.

We'd been in this house a year at that time, aware of the dog there as it always barked, but hadn't chased/bitten previously.

Owners denied it was theirs, 'just a dog we feed' and a suggestion she shouldn't be cycling if it was a problem.

It went on holiday a few weeks later. Perhaps it will have a better persona in the next life.

btw, in Germany they are just having a discussion about allowing topless or nude girls into public pools in summertime. Thats not a joke btw.

and in our conservative Chanthaburi town - for the swimming pool complex within the fitness park area, no tshirt/shorts permitted for women swimmers - swimsuits and swimcaps provided for hire; and for men, no 'beach-baggy' shorts allowed either - cycle shorts style (never speedos).

Volleyball is a sport where height makes a difference, and watching the Polish and Thai girls compete close to the net couldn't have made this clearer.

The Polish #9 last night, Magdalena Stysiak, is 2.03m, that's 6'8"

In comparison, Thailand's tallest, Thatdao Nuekjang is 184cm, 6' 1/2"

  13. Thailand is in Pool B - teams as follows with current world ranking

    Dominican Republic (8), Poland (12), Türkiye (6), Thailand (14), Croatia (22), Korea (24)

    v Türkiye - Won 3-2

    v Poland - lost 0-3

    v Croatia - playing now, ahead 2-0 (25-18 and 25-13)

    v Korea - Sept 29

    v Dominican Republic - 1 Oct

Thailand won the first five-setter of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022. In a Pool B encounter with the world’s sixth-ranked team Türkiye at the GelreDome in Arnhem on Saturday, outside hitter Chatchu-On Moksri hammered out 33 points towards a nail-biting 3-2 (17-25, 31-29, 22-25, 25-19, 15-13) victory.

  14. Electric vehicles, of sorts, these appear to breeding locally in Chanthaburi, driven either in the motorcycle lanes or the main laned-roads.

Somewhere between golf cart and mobility scooter.

Just one more hazard to be aware of.

  15. Who'd be a landlord?

We've encountered three 'runners' from rental accomm locally - two UK one US, all males, unfortunately we'd effectively been 'guarantor' for one of the English ones, guy late 60s, didn't know him but helped find a rental house and translate the rental docs etc, afterwards he was in terms of the property owner 'our friend' and we took liability for the clean up.

The other two, gone without notice, unpaid rent, both mid-late 20s secondary school teachers here through an agency,  even stole the kitchen items and towels, weird, wonder how often it happens.

Guess the agency had to pick up the costs for that.
