Sorry to hear about the wife.
You could go hang out in Cambodia or Laos for a few weeks. Get your new passport there and a tourist visa to cone back. Atleasr a new passport should make getting accross borders easier.
-
The Philippines will give you a visa on SSDI. There is also Cambodia. Why stay in Thailand?
I remember you asking about this a year ago. What happened to your filipina gf?
-
The post office use to be just 500 baht per year. There is also a company called Siam Secure in Pattaya that rents safe deposit and mail boxes. I think they will even text you when mail arrives.
-
I find it hard to believe that someone who lived in the country for 3 years on tourist visas does not already know their options.
Seems to be a popular topic in the visa run vans I found myself in.

If you got lots of cash, there is always an option.
Where is the op? I guess he was looking for the secret cheap option.

Why did the law firm only say a 50/50 chance? Your odds seem very good to me after reading your situation.

I thought about Mexico but I like Thai women much better than chicas.

Belgium sounds very generous. Unlike the United States.
You are joking right? The USA has tons of services if you seek them out. You will not starve that is for sure.

"Sex capital of Asia"? Never going to happen.

I think Joe is correct.
I needed that document to exit but I was on extention of stay (not a visa) and work permit that still had several months on it. I quit before the end of my contract.
-
Your school needs to give you a document to leave the country by land. I think it is to prove you paid your tax.
BTW, I would edit out the name of your school. Never a good idea.

Hope you are not planning to work on a tourist visa?

I agree with neversure! If you want to work there is plenty of work.
Keeping that job with your negative outlook is going to be the hard part.
-
Maybe you could drive for Uber? You are your own boss.
I think it may be tough for you to work for someone else after so long.
-
I think Texas may have more jobs than Florida but not sure. Get on craigslist and look at jobs and apartments for different areas. I would recomend starting with temp companies due to your lack of recent work history and references.
You say you are vested in SS. I assume you mean you have at least the 40 quarters (10 years of work) to get a minimum pention. But the amount you get is based on 35 years. That means you currently have a lot of $0s averaged in. Replacing those 0s with even $10,000 or $20,000 for a few years will help you and eventually your wife.
The biggest thing I can suggest and you probably already know is get health insurance. One bad accident, heart attact, cancer and your life savings is gone.
Best of luck!

Portland is nice with no sales tax and great public transportation (light rail, street cars, bus and bike friendly). You really don't need a car but is easy to rent one for a day if needed. Can drive to the coast in an hour or ski MT Hood until May also just an hour drive.I am moving back to the states this month after 14 years here. Will have to find work
as well. I am a contractor by trade so am not really worried. Had a great time in
Thailand, but at this point feels like a been there done that scenario. So
time to change the tune on the record player. I also have a wife and child that
I wish to grow up in America. The education system here is basically non-
existent so I am unwilling to subject her to that just because I like eating
mangoes....I will report later how it is going.... :-) I have traveled to virtually
every state in America by motorcycle. My choice of where to live is Oregon
for many different reasons. I grew up in Calif., however the state has basically
destroyed itself so no plans to ever return there.
Oregon would be where I would go, as well. It just has an attraction....for some reason. I never have been there (I been to most of the other States). Eugene looks appealing...but about pricey for rent/buy. Climate and environment....(I don't mind rain)...would be invigorating...and not overly cold (like my home in upstate NY).
Also, prefer to be relatively closer to SE Asia. I can get Space A military Hops from the State of Washington, and from Travis in California. Possibly all the way to several bases in Okinawa and Korea (military retired)
A lot of Asians and you can legally smoke weed come July!
The only problem is its the #1 US moving destination right now so rents are high and jobs are not plentiful. Min wage is $9.25/hour in Oregon (one of the highest in the country).

I am trying to figure out why at 50+ the OP wants to return. It does not sound like he is tired of Thailand or has money issues. He even stopped working at about 40.
-
Social security is calculated using 35 years not 20. If less than 35 years of work $0s are averaged in.
OP, what are you coming back for? What are you trying to acomplish?
I moved back after being gone 4 years. I kept a credit rating by keeping 2 credit cards but renting an apartment was still a PITA. No recent rental history.

These types of jobs have been around for years because plenty of guys take them. You will even pay for your own work permit and they will want you to stay until 4 pm.

I recenly came back to the US and just renting an apartment was a PITA. Your credit history does not disapear if gone for two years. Mine was fine as I kept a few credit cards and just changed the addresses to my mail service. The problem was no recent rental history. Some people sell everything to come here...and then buy everything here.
After a few years, they start thinking about selling everything here and going back.
Then, when they realize what they have come back to, they start missing things in Thailand.
Reality is, for me, my income is pretty good for living a great life here..although a bit lonely.
My income is not enough, however, to live at the same level back home. (I have no back home..really)
I would have to pick a location out of one of the fifty states in the USA and show up with a backpack,
leaving a middle class life here. My wife would not be impressed.
However, in two years, I receive my social securtiy and then I can do either place, or both
(6 months on and 6 months off).
I am not overly attached to Thailand, but there is nothing remotely similar in the USA...
No credit there for two years....(have to rebuild credit from scratch). Wife would earn more there.

No need to justify where you live to anyone.
I currently live in the US but have lived in Thailand for 5 years and plan to return.
Both places have their pros and cons but saying you are at great risk of being shot in the US is just plain stupid. Some people are just prone to finding trouble. I avoid those types.

The US is safe. Sounds like the OP is just trying to justify the move.
It is OK to say you moved for women. Its why we are all here.

Hope he atleast had a few years to enjoy retirement.
Too many work their whole life and die too early.

Student or Work?
in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits

If the SSA finds out you are working, that may be a problem come CDR time. It doesn't matter you are not being paid. Have you had a CDR yet?
