  1. The UK will not do ANYTHING which would have any significant (meaning, more than cosmetic) until they can't avoid it. Most countries would act the same way, unfortunately - called "diplomacy". And that's what "everyone" counts on and continues with "business as usual" ... It would be a very pleasant surprise if proven wrong here... I really can't see that happening, coz it would be a very public and unpleasant exercise as the "behind closed doors" options get lesser and lesser...

Don't underestimate them yet, the FCO has acted more forcefully now than what was first expected.

I'll throw my hat in and say that the UK coroners report WILL be made public sooner rather than later.

This foregone conclusion can be circumvented. I expect the FCO will act in an unprecedented manner. Myanmar and GB need to shadow each other at every turn right now and show strength with Myanmars leadership.

Kent can stay in the back stalls. I doubt as a career diplo he would be comfortable any other way. Gen Prayuth seems to think he can puppet him around.

New international policies can be developed by reacting to these very types of circumstances.

Clocks ticking though so get it moving -sooner rather than later please lads.

I will ask again in the hope there is someone knowledgeable about this: Can a UK corponer return a verdict of ' killed by person or persons unknown'

regardless of any convictions in another country that the coroner feels are not 'correct;. Also, would a coroner consult with police before returning such a verdict?

I ask because if it is possible then a verdict such as this would have serious repercussions (diplomatically) and further isolate Thailand and its rule of law.

Coroner can return what they believe to be the cause of death and likely weapon/s used.

That could potentially be enough to throw this case ass up.

The UK coroners verdict doesn't change anything about the facts that Thai authorities don't already know. It's a purely UK internal procedure that may be formally needed to legally satisfy British insurance companies. It would also have some implications if any perpetrator would hypothetically face a British court.

It's basic courtesy of life between nations that one does not mingle with the internal affairs of other countries.

That said, any displeasure is handled "diplomatically", behind closed doors and under four eyes. It doesn't happen in presence of the media and the public. This allows for face saving, especially important for Asians. That the UK has invited the Thai envoy to explain in person *was a significant slap* to the face, at diplomatic levels. Diplomacy will always compartementalize issue and seldom get different matters disturb relationships. It needs more than one badly handled criminal case for that to happen. A show of real disatifaction would be the publishing of a travel warning for (parts of) Thailand by a UK government agency.

As for the public, they could put pressure up thru consumer groups adressing the travel industry in the UK. I guess TAT will counter with an additional campaing.

  3. I've yet to see a single mention of this, in international media. It's hard to deal with, but people die, and constantly all over the world. I don't understand this daily obsession, even here on TVF.

The case is getting noticed, at least here in Europe, not really for the murders per se, but for the less than glorious police work. Of course it's not a daily media appearance.
  4. One thing the UK team may of found on Hannah's face/body is spit (full of dna!). After a heinous crime of this nature, the perp/perps often spit on the victim to reiterate dominance!

I am just wondering what evidence a UK medical team can still find off a body that has already been thru a disection procedure at a Bangkok facility. Doctors there have been processing the body, as in cutting it open and getting samples. And stitching up and preparing the body for transport to the UK was likely done by some assistants, not in a way to preserve any delicate cues. By the time the corpse reached the UK there must have been many unrelated third party DNA specimens on it. Not to speak about any numbers of third party specimen to be found after the initial professional handling by the local police on KT.

  6. Just stumbled into this thread, and can report that the Zurich, Switzerland, consulate has no such financial requirements for non-O visas when married to Thai national. On the other hand they insist to see the booking of a roundtrip flight. Didn't discuss their reasoning as I anyhow need to return, but one would think that local border runs ought to be possible, as getting a yearly extension not needing a outbound ticket.

  7. Very good advise. BTW how is the person planning to pay his bills in Thailand?

He is almost definitely a troll.

But with five credit cards he could run up a bit more debt.

    How am I a troll?

I maxed my credit cards to pay my mom's medical bill... L2read before you respond.

Just for personal interest cause I also hang out on an American forum elsewhere, and only if you wish to reveal some background:

Did this all happen before introduction of the Obamacare insurance setup, or was there some snag along the way?

  8. Where I once was able to get by with carrying a hundred baht note in my shirt pocket...to contribute to the police benevolent fund...now I have to carry 10 thousand baht?

This prices most people out of the bribery business...just think if you meet a really nice officer...and he lets you off for a mere 5000 baht...what a deal...

The future bodes well for some officials in Thailand...

That's why Immigration is asking Quality Tourists to present 20000Bhat in cash on entry to LOS ;)
  9. It could be, but the problem is that if it's successful, the bib will lose his daily extra money!

What will happen then? They will need their daily extra money back somehow I guess.

And for all the people here that think this is a good step:

Would you like losing a half day or a day just to pay a fine of 300 baht to pay at some far away police station to get your license back?

With this anti bribe action they should also improve the way to pay your fine on the spot. Only then it can be successful.

Why would anyone "lose a half day or a day" to pay a fine and what's with the "far away police station"? Police stations are open 24 hours a day and the fine would be paid and licence retrieved from the local police station in the area the ticket was issued.

Paying fines on the spot to the police officer is exactly what the authorities are trying to stop!

Howlong does it take for the cop to carry the license back to his police station, say he just started his shift out on the roads in the boonedocks?
  10. so they are going to make it cheaper for thais to visit Thailand while ripping off all the ferangs that want to visit by increasing their costs such as the recent rise in ferang admission costs and of course the increase in hotel fees to cover all the losses from lack of touristsw00t.gif , who thought up this one.......

but but but businesses get a writeoff for residential training programs where they teach how to accomodate for Quality Tourists on the future

  11. i'm no lawyer but if this case was pushed to court, imo, there is a good chance of the car owner winning, irrelevant of notices around the parking lot. The car park owner by taking money accepted a contract to supply a decent standard of service, imo the question is, does this meet a reasonable standard? if not then imo theres a case.

    Fine Print on parking regulation:

don't leave valuables such as sets of wheels in your car.

  12. So one guy says no,,, Another says probably not a problem. I think I'll go several days before the 20th (date current non-b runs out as well) just in case I get turned back and need to make further plans (back to Laos for Non-B or f*k it, head to Phils).

    Any other opinions appreciated.

Normally you should not be able to have two valid visas at one time. But in your case they did not invalidate your tourist visa. Your visa is still valid since they did not stamp it cancelled.

Those stamps on the visa are not that unusual. I am sure the immigration officer at the border will have seen them before. And as I wrote they will not pay attention to them.

Okay, I'm not concerned about the red stamps. My concern is in regards to the "crackdown" and having an unstamped "fresh" double-entry tourist visa bring extra scrutiny to being an in-outer. It's likely something they've not seen before, or very seldom at least.

just an outsiders comment: why are you making that border run now that you have the non-b visa? Just forget about the tourist visa and any need to ctivate ut. As for your choice of visiting otherwise accross the border, I guess you may need to get a reentry stamp.

  13. Entry denied, quality status not approved.

The first time they do this & it gets reported in international press, arrivals will drop by 30%

Will travel agents around the world start advising their clients to arrive here looking ' quality ' so wear designer clothes, have designer luggage and confirmed accommodation in an up market hotel / resort ?

Next part of the conversation will be possibly be about alternative destinations.

tsk tsk tsk Those quality tourists are expected to shop for those quality labels in Thailands own stores and surplus outlets, not already bring the stuff along....

  14. The bicycle lanes would be built with a budget of the Department of Physical Education; however, the best location of bicycle lanes will be discussed with local residents and provincial chambers of commerce before the construction starts.

    That's rich.

    Clear the sidewalks first!

It's my guess that any bicycle lanes will be used for motorcycles first. And the stray dogs will like the warm paths undisturbed by cars.

PS in Jomtien, did any cyclist recently try to use the bicycle paths built along the sides of 2nd beach road? My last observation several months back showed that greenery was taking over, some canal access holes open traps, and garbage deposited all over the place ...

    Reward for traffic cops suspended

    THE NATION

    [....]

The caretaker Metropolitan Police commissioner, Maj-General Sriwara Rangsiphramkul, said the suspension of the scheme was due to a budget shortage, adding that only Bt100,000 was allocated for it.

ooops! They only expected to award ten (10) officers?

  16. Au revoir mon ami, you will enjoy life much more in a Thai prison as you deserve it.

As about "ATCC And Police Cracked Down Human Trafficking Gang" hardly a gang, just a money grabbing woman without morals.

Don't worry after he serve is jail term in Thailand, he'll send to jail in France too....

French national who commit crime in foreign country will be prosecute too in France.....

One Crime two times in Jail.......

    Wrong!

When nabbed and prosecuted in Thailand there will not get a second prosecution in Europe. Depending the binational treaties a foreigner may get transferred home to comlete his Thai sentence there. If the foreigner flees Thailand theymay get prosecuted at home for certain specific actions abroad, but evidence must be sufficient.

  17. and added that the public can assist the police force by snapping photos or filming police officers who take bribes.

That can be a dangerous thing to do. You better make sure there is a lot of people about to confirm your story after that cop beats the crap out of you.

must be a real sharp camera that dicerns of the officer getting a Bhat note handed in place of the driver licence or id card.

  18. I hope they don't start arresting people just for the sakes of claiming the 10000Baht reward...........

What will the suggested price tag be for not reporting a assumed (aka pulled from thin overheated polluted BKK air) bribe attempt? Several such donations will surely compensate for the paper work needed to obtain the official cheque...

    Drunk-driving law tightened

    The Nation August 10, 2012 1:00 am

Occupants of vehicles of any kind who drink alcohol during travel are now subject to six months imprisonment and/or a Bt60,000 fine, the Office of Alcoholic Beverages announced yesterday.

Hmmm --- this article mentions any occupants, not only driver. Any more details on the correct wording? Why would the Thai government want to punish any drunk passenger for being driven home by a sober driver ?

  20. I can't understand why people would use an agency for so valuable and important a matter.....

I can't understand why you can't understand. There are reputable agencies.

I use one such agency. They always give me the receipt from immigration.

The agency is known and trusted by hundreds of expats over the years.

The reason I use the agency is -- it costs me 1,000 baht for them to make

4 trips a year to immigration on my behalf. For me, that is real value.

Others would prefer to do it themselves and save the money. Life is full

of choices. Everyone will not make the same choices you make.

To note that delegating the 90day reporting is legal, while the trouble seems to stem from the yearly extensions made in a grey area and green tea money...
