  1. Downtown Ubon has a half decent cable TV set up which has two companies that seem to use it. I use a company that is called RTV. It suits be just fine as I watch limited TV so might not be for everyone. The main channels that suits me is the Australia Network which gives me the ABC news, Aussie Rules, Rugby League and Union, a few dramas etc. The other English speaking channels are BBC, Aljazzera, Bloomberg and Film max. Some people seem to get HBO but I haven't noticed it. It also has the South African Sports channlers Super Sport 1, 2 and 3. This is great for me as they usually show most of the Australian Cricket Matches.

500 baht to get hooked up then 300 baht per month after that (Thats if they remember to come around and collect the money!)

Where is the RTV office? Or do you have their phone number?

    Thanks,

    Mike

  2. There are many small "mansions" that do monthly rates. You can spot them, but they don't always have obvious signs. If you just arrive in Ubon, stay in a small hotel for a few days (e.g. behind Wrong Way, or Phadaeng Mansion - both below 500 a night) then you could personally drive around and check them out. You can get monthly rates with aircon for around 5000, I don't know what fan rates are.

    Good luck,

    Mike

P.S. An example of the signs - I have stayed behind Wrong Way many many times, but still have no idea what the place is called :-)

Some places I have spotted simply because there is a row of identical doors.

Thanks, I love the name "Wrong Way" I'll find a place behind the wrong way.

But what is it ? Is it a building, a police station or something like that ? Do motorcycle taxi guys know where it is, or will they go the wrong way ?

Wrong Way is a farang bar on Tanon Phadaeng (Phadaeng Street). Ubon has tuk tuks, some of them know it, others will know the street name if they understand the way you say it. A few tuk tuks have a Wrong Way ad on the back, so they should know where it is. You can phone the owner, Ting, on 086868661, she can speak to the tuk tuk driver to get instructions.

In the interests of being fair, there are 2 farang bars - the other is N-joy.

    Cheers,

    Mike

  3. 5) Watch the contractor do the work and make corrections at the time. Complaining later is usually met with blank looks.

Perhaps it's a bit late but this really is the best advice. You need to be on site all the time, watching, and asking for changes before the concrete/glue/paint dries.

  5. Hi there.

If you head up Soi 42 off Chayangkun Road (the soi is almost opposite BigC) there are about 3 or 4 new developments going on. One is pretty much finished, with about 50% of the houses purchased, at about 2.5m baht each. Another couple of developments are in earlier stages, with few houses built yet.

    Good luck,

    Mike

  6. Hopefully there will be an update on the situation with the patient in need. In the meantime, a very big thanks to the many people have gone that extra measure and extra mile to help someone in need.

I am O- in Ubon Ratchathani.

If there is still a need please contact me and I will do what I can to help.

[Please delete my number, but contact me at 0877794158]

  7. ^USPS doesn't offer any 'registered' option like you guys were describing, all they have is insurance which costs roughly 25% the worth of the package (insane). FedEx charges 200$ for a 5-pound package to Thailand, but they use Fedex employees the whole way... moreover they told me that the Barbie doll I'm sending needs to be checked by the Ministry of whatever to make sure it's safe. What the f-ck!? So you're telling me there's no way to send packages from the U.S. to most populous country in Southeast Asia? :)

Point Of Information if I may.... :D

    2008 population figures:

    Indonesia 237,512,355

    Philippines 96,061,683

    Vietnam 86,116,559

    Thailand 65,493,298

  8. www.weloveubon.com provides some more info about expat bars, and Ubon nightlife

got to say, was at Peppers last Friday night for a Pizza and some beers and thought the Pizza was fantastic! Peppers not on this website but im sure it used to be.... a little suprising seeing as it is definately one of the top eateries in Ubon :)

Yes, I'm sure Pepper's was there before; which goes to show you can't rely on a single source of information. Check TV for up-to-date information :D

Also today the forum seemed blank. Maybe he's having some technical problems.

    Cheers,

    Mike

  9. (for instance, I found wooden windows and insulation there that I couldn't find at UW, along with a different selection of drill bits and kitchen faucets).

By the way, if you go to the next door building at Ubon Wasadu, it is their warehouse for larger items. They have wooden windows, doors etc. in there, and they will take you up on the fork lift to select the good ones from the pile.

  10. Went to the denstist at Ubon Rak Hospital and made an appointment to see a dentist who can speak English.

Useless turd didn't understand anything and just wanted to pull my tooth out. They had workers drilling stuff in reception, it didn't smell like a dentist, and it wasn't as clean as I would expect from a private hospital.

No way would I have anything voluntarily removed from the dentist there.

Mind you at 200 baht a visit I shouldn't have expected much.

Can anyone recommend a good dental clinic in Ubon?

I've used the dentistry department at Ubonrak for 13 years, with various dentists, and always had good service, never seen any "useless turds" there, and all dentistry - believe it or not - was done in the proper room. What should a dentist's clinic actually smell like?

Maybe I'm just lucky, or you are a very unlucky person.

I am also very pleased with the dental department at Ubon Rak. The dentist seemed to understand exactly what she was doing, could explain it to me, and when I didn't understand in Thai she could often come up with the English word.

It just shows how experiences can vary.

    Cheers,

    Mike

  11. I'm certainly not one for starting trouble but I often wonder what they would do if I were to walk on

there land and start picking fruit :D .

They would probably say hello and ofer you some fruit they have already picked :)

  12. Here are some farang owned places:

Wrong Way Cafe and N-Joy both provide pub-style entertainment.

For breakfast, meals, coffee, go to Pepper's Cafe and Bakery.

For good Italian food go to Spago's.

For louder, later, places, no farang owned but frequented by farangs, go to Swing Party House, E-bar, and some people like The Rock and the View.

    Cheers,

    Mike

  13. :

    :

No scams, just interested in what a farang is doing off the normal tourist route, wave a map at them and yaba on about sight seeing.

I did get stopped by a check point (police) looking for drugs once (not that area), they searched the car I was in.

    :

    :

    - perhaps you shouldn't have waved the yaba at them... :)

  14. I agree with previous posters, Ubon Wasadu is the place and good for all your building supplies, bathroom fixtures, etc. In general I prefer Index for furniture, but Ubon Wasadu is also worth checking out.

Memock's directions are spot on (as usual).

    Cheers,

    Mike

  15. If you google Thailand vor you will come upon a site listing air navagation aids in Thailand. Using the position of these may enable you to plot flight paths. I would post the link but ...

I found the list, thanks, but turning it into a map is more effort than my interest at the moment... maybe when I have nothing to do...

    Cheers,

  16. The giant Mekong catfish are famous, I believe, but in serious decline (what isn't :) ).

There is a dead one (stuffed, or maybe a fake) hanging in a restaurant in Kong Chiam.

If you are interested, check the Mekong River Commission's website www.mrcmekong.org and download their Technical Paper No. 3, which describes this, and other, giant Mekong fish species.

    Cheers,

    Mike

  17. I am in Phibum Mangsahan, Ubon Ratchathani, at about 15 deg 16 min N, 105 deg 18 min E.

Several times a day commercial airliners fly on a more-or-less East-West route, which seems to be a corridor slightly north of my house. They are too high to see any markings. I can hear the lower ones, but not the higher ones.

Are there maps online showing such corridors? I know shipping lanes are shown on charts, is there an equivalent for commercial aircraft?

I am just curious to know where they are going to and coming from.

    Cheers,

    Mike
