Could go to Korea and earn 40-70k a month illegally of course
That's a thought. We actually know some that have done it the legal route as well. It's possible and still pays way more than here.

Can expect minimum wage around 330 - 350 baht per day, working 7 days a week, that would make about 10k per month.
There are many different areas to work in that do not demand education. However, the wages will be the same.1 minute ago, Iron Tongue said:7-11 is always hiring.
I can't see how anyone can survive with 2 kids at 10k per month.

Education?
Male, female?
High school diploma or higher?
One male, one female.
Female finished high school, age 21. Male has a mechanical engineering degree, age 26.

For two young people in their twenties, zero English skills or other notable skills - what are some opportunities for entry positions that could get them on a solid track where they can earn a living and not risk losing a limb or a couple fingers in some shady factory.
I guess I'm just looking for random ideas. I'm also a bit out of touch what one should expect to earn in some low level jobs (hotel maid, dishwasher, etc). You've got to start somewhere, but you still shouldn't be ripped off.
Thoughts?

That's not how interest is calculated on many consumer loans in Thailand.
But it sure seems to be exactly what is happening here?
-
But hmm..
7500 interest per month and 8 months have been paid, at 16000 per month.
The actual loan amount has only gone down to 564000.
If what you were saying was exactly how it worked, the loan amount would have to be different.
8x 7500 (interest) + 8x 8500 (loan back pay)
Total interest paid: 60000
Total loan paid back: 68000So the remaining amount would have to be 532000? We're missing 32000 ?
Are they taking more money for interest initially ? That feels wrong / illegal to me?

- loan amount: 600,000 thb at 15% interest for 12 months = 7,500 thb interest per month
- total interest: 71 x 7,500 thb = 532,500 thb + 600,000 thb = total sume of 1,132,500 thb.
- monthly amortisation: 600,000 thb over 71 months = 8,450 thb per month.- total monthly payment: 7,500 thb (interest) + 8,450 thb (amortisation) = 15,950 thb.
- your balance is reduced by 8 x 8,450 thb - 600,000 thb = 532,400 thb.
conclusion: in real you're paying around 24% interest!
I'm afraid to say that what you are saying makes a lot of sense! Thank you for spending your time for that.
Looks like somebody has gotten screwed 😞

something doesn't add up...
a loan of 600,000 thb with 71 installments of 16,000 thb results in an annual rate of 24.28%!
A lot doesn't seem to add up for me, either.
-
So there's a personal loan, 600'000 THB with a bank.
According to some quick research, the max allowed interest rate for such a loan is 15%.
However, 8 payments have been made into repaying said loan, 8x 16'000 = 128'000 and the loan "balance" has only come down to 564'000.
Apparently the loan is for 71 instalments, 16k each - so that is a total of 1.136 million THB.
How is that 15%? That is more like 100% extra interest ?
Can someone please ELI5 that?

If you're on the Darkside, there's a metal shop on Soi Nern Plab Wan, at the intersection near Aqua Dymie bar.
I've used them for years, they've made my front gate & fixed a busted chair. If you visit and the shop is closed (the owner has a 2nd shop in the city) either call or visit the glass shop around the corner of the same building.
This guy did a good job - it's visible handmade, but it fits the purpose and looks very strong and solid.
Thanks for the tip!

Thank you for at least trying to help the lady, As you can see by some of the responses to your posts, many posters here are too wrapped up in themselves, to care about anyone else.
Some posters have made sensible suggestions.
At least one other poster is simply to stupid to be allowed out on his own.
Yeah I know. The trolls and donkeys are the reason why I hesitate to post here in the first place. And I really only do it when I sort of need to for one reason or another.
But thanks for the kind words. They are indeed appreciated.

I would think that an urgent visit to the Embassy is needed . Is it 100% sure it is the Embassy that has her documents? Could the husband have picked them up, lied, etc ?? When she knows she can apply for a new Laotian passport . Just keep the husband at bay.
We solved that part of the equation. She will be able to pick up her passport at VFS after the embassy has sent it there. It will take a few days, so next week she will have her passport back, and be able to leave to Laos and re-apply for a Thai visa & work permit.
Problem is that due to this dilemma, she's now 30 days on overstay of her Thai visa. Not sure how immigration will deal with that with Lao citizens. Might cost her some money to sort it out, but hopefully she can do so without getting put into the detention center. From what I know is that westerners can just sort it out by paying at the immigration desk, up to 20k. But there's a risk of being banned from coming back. That would be bad as she does have a well paying job here now.

Unless she wants to continue pursuing the Norwegian immigration process, I don't get that. Maybe the embassy thinks she still wants to pursue living in Norway? If not, I'd suggest she "borrow" it and just not return it to them. It's not their property.
At least with her passport in her hands, she has options, like traveling. Getting her passport back would be my first priority, anyway. The divorce from a marriage that isn't even registered in Thailand or Laos can wait.
Edit: Though I'd add that her passport being held up for over a year adds a new level of complexity, since she would have needed it to renew her permission to stay and renew her WP. Leading me to suspect that she's not working legally. Not that I care. Just that it adds a new wrinkle.
Yes, we thought about the "borrowing" as well. It's hers to keep after all.
We asked about the visa situation here as well and she says she has been on work visas here, but she couldn't do anything about it for a year since she couldn't get her passport back. She may indeed be illegal here from the PoV of the thai immigration, though I'm not sure about the specifics. She says she has a paper confirming that her passport is with the embassy.

Just out of curiosity (because I have no advice to offer), is her passport a Thai passport, or a Laotian passport?
Other than the divorce, what is her objective? Stay in Thailand, go back to Laos, or move eventually to Norway (or somewhere else)?
Edit: Also, is it normal for a passport and application to be held up in the Norwegian Embassy for that long, or could something hinky be going on she may not be aware of? If it is a Laotian passport, that would seem quite limiting for her.
She really just wants to get out of this mess and not be locked down anymore. Her passport (Laotian) is currently still held by the embassy and they are not just returning it upon request.
I am wondering as well if we do not have the fully picture. The whole thing seems odd. But the embassy offered her only to "borrow" her passport (I saw that email from the embassy staff myself), which was really odd.

Hi all
Posting here as due to the complexity of the situation it doesn't really fit anywhere else.
Looking for advise, and I'll try to summarize best I can.
- Person of Laos origin, lives and works in Thailand
- Married a guy from Norway, was married for 8 years and has been to Norway several times
- In the process of applying for residence permit in Norway, passport and documentation is at the Norwegian embassy here in Thailand for a year now
- Got beat up severely (repeatedly) by the (ex-)husband, made police report with photos and all. Police took no action.
- Wants to get divorced, but is now being blackmailed by the spouse (wants ring back, wants police report annulled or won't sign divorce papers)
- Marriage has NOT been registered anywhere outside of Norway
Of course there's lots more to it, but that's kind of the gist of it.
What can one do to assist here?
I'm European and married to a Thai myself, so I am somewhat familiar with the fact that things quickly get complicated when multiple countries get involved. But with this I guess I'm somewhat in over my head. But I've been asked for advise and I'm trying to help best I can.
Some questions I have:
- What if the current visa application is simply abandoned, passport cancelled and a new one is gotten? Can we just inform the embassy of that fact, rendering the current application null and void, and solving that part of the equation?
- What about a divorce at an international level. We can't afford expensive lawyers. Looking for things we can realistically do ourselves. Either here in Thailand (we're here), in Norway (we do have some contacts there), or in Laos (family is there).
- What if we were to just ignore the fact she's married in Norway. Could she get married legally elsewhere in the future?
- Any other important things one should not forget?
Thanks for any feedback

Some neighbors just outside of our village have chickens. And loud roosters. And they don't care.
So now recently, one of them, the loudest one, started escaping and showing up at our house at 5AM screaming around every 30 seconds.
Wife told them repeatedly, and they don't care.
Today wife went outside to chase the chicken away. Chicken had other ideas.
Wife outside. Chicken in the f'n kitchen. At 5:30AM.
Wife does them dishes thai style - in a huge pile. Yeah you can imagine how that turned out.
Jokes aside, this really isn't fun. It's not how I intend to spend my morning.
We caught the little rascal now. But what do we do?
Is there someone that can help here? I'd imagine we could call the cops and say we have no idea whose chicken this is, and they might take him to the BBQ?
Do we now need to disinfect the whole kitchen? Is TB still a thing?
