  1. I seem to have the worst possible combination of banks:TD in Canada and BB in Thailand.

My gripe with TD is that they seem to be totally incapable of serving clients at a distance. When new here, I contacted them to transfer money to BB. They told me to go to my branch (Montreal).

As for BB, I find them unresponsive and branch-centric. I have three accounts with them. I cannot transfer funds from account A to account B online. The account is "blocked" according to my correspondent at BB iBanking. Contact my local branch (Chiang Mai) to get it changed. I am in Krabi. I faxed the branch two weeks ago: no reply, no action.

I am looking to change banks here. I think I may go with Bank of Ayudhya (the yellow bank), confusingly better known as Krungsri. I like that they are Japanese-owned.

  2. I have used K Bank Cyber banking many times to do small transfers with no glitches whatever, including a transfer when I was in Vietnam.

One thing I did learn what that in some cases after getting the OTP message you have to start the whole process again then insert the OTP. (That's K bank, I don't know about BBL.)

On the other hand the OP seems to be very familiar with the BBL internet banking processes.

I wonder if the OP phoned the BBL HO on this.

Yes, I am in touch with their IT staff. I will let you know the outcome.

  3. Check the receiving account's details. If you entered something incorrectly it may have let you create the recipient in the system, but when it tried to send the transfer couldn't find the account (i.e. maybe a number entered was 009009 that was supposed to be 090009 or something like that).

You had 2 OTOP messages sent to you, is it possible that perhaps you entered the wrong OTOP when doing the transfer confirmation and the system just cancelled the transfer, which would explain why there is no pending transaction and no balance change ? (I had that happen once as I had also created a new account and then did a transfer. When the 2nd OTOP message arrived I looked at my phone but didn't realize that it was still displaying the first OTOP message until I double checked and noticed I was entering the wrong number.)

Lastly - have you checked the messages on the iBanking page to see if there was a notification of a failed transaction ? (I'm not sure if they send one or not and I don't want to deliberately fail a transfer just to see !) If all else fails, try the transaction again.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply!

The second BB SMS I received after sending the funds

said, "iBanking transfer to [account number] [account name] OIUSU OTP [OTP code] at 15:44". I interpret this as confirmation of the transfer.

Good idea to check incoming bank emails. I checked at your suggestion, but found nothing related to this transaction.

  4. check your balance and see if its missing 3k ..........

As I said, no signs of a transfer. As I did not make clear, no signs of 3k baht debited either.
Besides the SMS you also get straight away a confirmation of transfer on screen. Did you get that?

Yes, all went according to the process I use to make all my transfers. I make maybe 10 transfers a month and never had a problem. There was one thing different about this transaction: I did not enter a phone number of the person with the receiving account so that they would receive a confirmation SMS. Perhaps this caused a glitch.

I made this transfer at about 15:00, so BB's "dead time" 23:00-06:00 was not a factor.

My account shows no pending transfers.

My account shows no completed transfers after 2 June.

My account shows zero activity on 15 June, the day of the transfer.

  5. On Wednesday 15 June 2016, I logged onto Bangkok Bank's iBanking website.

My goal was to transfer 3k baht to a mate in Phuket. He does not have a Thai bank account, so I was to forward to his pal's SCB account.

I had to create a new recipient for this transfer, entering the bank, the account owners name, and account number. I did so. Within ten seconds I received an SMS from Bangkok Bank with a code to enter to verify the transaction. I did so. Transferee account created.

I then transferred 3k baht to the account I had just created. Again, I received a code via BB SMS, entered it, and received confirmation that the funds had been transferred.

Next day my friend contacted me: no new funds from me had been deposited in SCB. I checked on BB iBanking. Sure enough, there was no sign of funds transferred.

I went to the BB branch in Ao Nang at the next opportunity. I showed them my account book for the "from" account. I showed them the SMS messages I had received from BB confirming that I had added the "to" account successfully and that 3k baht had been transferred to that account.

I was sure that they would be keenly interesting in taking down all this information to find out what had happened. No way. They told me that this sometime happened. I kept asking why it happened. They had not answers. They took down no information. They treated the incident as if BB iBanking were a totally unrelated company, one in which they had no interest whatsoever.

Be careful: When making an electronic bank transfer, double check to see that the funds are truly sent as indicated by the comfirmation SMSs.

  6. Ado yourself a big favour, do not buy a laptop in Thailand most of them are very low quality, they are not the same models you would buy in a western country. All apps are copies anything go wrong and they will not help you.

I have bought 3 over the last 7 yrs all packed up useless. Full of viruses all the time.

They do not want to know if you have problems.

I took one back to New Zealand with me to get looked at and fixed, they said copy cannot fix it.

Just don't do it buy one from home. It will be cheaper in the end.

You're right and you're wrong. Computers sold here are not the same owing to the fact that they have Thai keyboards. But the guts of computers here are the same as computers anywhere. Your vendor may choose to load up your machine with all kinds of unwanted, dodgy software, but that is a local problem. If you were to buy a Dell laptop, e.g., from Dell Thailand http://www.dell.com/th/p/laptops.aspx?c=th&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn you get a machine that has a warranty honored worldwide.

  8. IMHO, the best place to buy a laptop or computer is Invade IT in Hua Hin where they have a shop, or online http://www.invadeit.co.th/. Their European staff is great.

As for operating systems...some laptops are sold without an OS. Their model numbers specify that they are without OSs. They are cheaper than those laptops sold with an OS. Buying without an OS is perfect in my opinion as, if you buy from a reputable place (not Big C, e.g.), you can specify the OS that you want them to install. An OS will cost extra, of course, unless it is a Linux distro, in which case you will no doubt be charged for the labour involved,

  9. I like the Pannerai a lot. Good location. I found the breakfast to be great. There was a thread here not long ago that disparaged it, but that was not my experience.

The pool is clean and in use year-round. It is not a "swim laps" kind of pool. More of the kind that kids like for splashing around and for lounging. It is conveniently located near food services, etc.

Altho drinks can be had, there is no specific bar area at the hotel.

The hotel is spotless and has a friendly staff. Lots of places to eat nearby. All in all, I rate the Pannerai highly.

  10. You could get a haircut there, you could get a beer there, and you can (at least you could 8 months ago) get a lot more there too. Here's how I wrote it up for Wikivoyage at the end of 2015:

    • Number 1 Bar, 39/7 Na Mueang Rd (Nearest cross-street is Ammat Rd), ☎ +66 49 246110. 15:00-last man standing. Convivial little bar tucked away 15 m off Na Mueang Rd. Run by Tom, an affable and informed Aussie, and his capable (and lovely) Thai manager, Dton. Serves Western and Thai food. The bar's motto is "value for money", a motto well lived up to. No cocktails. Has a lending library and a smallish bar pool table. Here you will meet intelligent local expats and a good number of Thais as well. Tom plans to move his family back to Oz at the end of 2015, thus the future of this bar hangs in the balance. On the corner just at the path to the bar is a full-service barber shop called Ace. You can get a beer in there as well. Small Leo beer, 60 baht. (updated Nov 2015 | edit)

  11. At the dead end of Soi Ao Nang 8 (8.042318, 98.818387) (not to be confused with Soi Nopparatthara 8) there is indeed a small shopping center being constructed. It says "opening soon". It has a couple of logos: "8 Icon" and "Galleria". It's small and no sign of what will be in it.
