Had to get a new visa because I got sloppy with my bank account. (Noted in another thread)
$150 round trip from BKK to Hanoi.
As a US citizen the downside is a visa fee for Vietnam that is currently $135!
People from many other countries allowed in for free for 15 days.
I had all of the proper documents.
Went to the Embassy and I was the only person there other than the staff.
Back out the door in 15 minutes.
Went the next day to pick up the visa and this time I was back out the door in about 3 minutes!
Friendly staff, and I am told that that there is rarely more than 1 or 2 other applicants at any one time.
Hanoi is a great city to visit for a few days. Lots of good restaurants if you stay in the old quarter.
Nice hotel room for $28 a night, and cheaper rooms are definitely available.
Even with the expensive visa fee for me, I think Hanoi is a much better choice than Vientiane.
I can suggest a good person for helping you get the necessary Viet visa, but also many services online.
Her fee was $20 for a rush, and she also got me a taxi to my hotel, which was a big help. That was $25 and I am not sure what they want when you get a taxi at the airport.
I paid $15 on the way back, with a taxi arranged by my hotel.
I think it gets as cheap as about $12 if you get a cab on the street, but I prefer paying a few dollars extra for the "safety" factor.

Can I also get a Non-O in Kuala Laumpur?
-
Ubonjoe,
I could have gone to Chang Khong today and exited and come back in on a tourist visa?!
Anyone have experience with going to Vietnam?
-
Well... they turned me down.
If I had returned the money to my account the same day I think they would have let it slide, but I took it out the afternoon of one day and put it back on the morning of the next day
The immigration guy said he would like to help me but he has to show his superior. She immediately said "No"
And I cannot go to Mae Sai and back again. I have to fly out of the country. Why do you think it is necessary to fly out?
He said I can go and come back on the same day if I like.
So, as he said, come back in on a tourist visa and then I can go to Mae Sai immigration and get it converted to a Non-O.
Will I have to wait 3 months to do this?
Not sure, because of the seasoning of money.
I did not think to ask at the time.
I am thinking that VietJet out of Bangkok is my cheapest option. $106 round trip.
Does someone know which airport that fly out of?

I went under the limit on Wed afternoon, and then back up on Thursday morning.
The bank letter was made showing my final balance as of Wednesday morning, so just BEFORE I went under.
-
My bank book now shows I was down a bit one day, and up the next.
My relationship with the bank-
When I went in, I had already been "under" and back up again.
And I had yet to update my passbook to show this.
My passbook showed me as always being over the minimum.
So I thought the bank might likely say- Let's update your bank book right now and we will give you a letter based on what it shows.
Instead, after my explaining, they were quite happy to base the letter on what I had in the bank the morning of the day before.
I took this to be a definite kindness on their part.
-
My bank balance on Wed. morning, the 5th, was B801,000. and I had a lot more money than necessary for the last three months.
Bank letter is for my balance as of Wed. morning.
Late Wed afternoon I withdrew B10,000 taking the balance down to B791,000. Early Thurs. morning I deposited B10,000 bringing the balance back up to B801,000.
Nothing "devious" done.
And yes, of course my bank book will show that I was below the mark for less than a day.

Thanks to all!
I live in Chiang Rai, and I would have had to go to Chiang Mai today for the Embassy, and I was not up to the trip. My guess is that I will get accepted as is.
Bank letter was on Oct. 5, and I go to Immigration on Oct. 10. That should be fine, yes?
As far as getting an affidavit notarized in the future, how close to the extension date does the affidavit need to be, and do I need a new affidavit every year?
I am bringing zero copies of my bank book. Do those pages need to be signed by the bank?
Never knew that, if so.

Here is where I am at so far...
Went to my bank, and they know me well.
I asked if I could get their letter showing my balance up to yesterday morning (still above B800,000) and they agreed to do this. I was surprised how willing they were.
So now my bank book shows B9,000 below the limit for less than a day, and then back up to the very same amount I had after withdrawing for a short time.
What do you think?
I can DL a statement from US Social Security showing my monthly draw from them, but it would not be notarized by the US Embassy, so perhaps useless.
Again, what do people think?

I came back from a long vacation and was a little sloppy in my thinking...
I took some money from my account that had a bit more than B 800,000 in it all year, and went down to B 791,000 for one day, just yesterday.
What will happen when I go to renew my extension on Monday?

The same as with other challenges, there are at least two components- Physical and Emotional.
So it would be good for your wife to get checked by an MD, regarding blood pressure etc.
The emotional side of things is usually more slippery.
We all have ways of worrying unnecessarily, and sometimes we lack a good healthy sense of self.
I think we can get the results we desire by engaging in various forms of mindfulness practices. Yoga and meditation being two great ways to come to a place of stillness.
In my understanding, what we are wanting to do is slow down the thinking mind, by harnessing it to our breath and movements. Yoga and meditation have at this point been shown scientifically to have marked results on one's sense of well-being, but such activities take a while to get results, and many folks quickly give up. There are many, many forms of meditation and mindfulness practices, so if you don't seem to get results, or you just don't feel comfortable with one method, try another.
Getting off sleep medications will often take a bit of help. The body and psyche get used to "being helped" and therefore usually we feel ill at ease when we stop taking such medication, regardless of what is going on in our lives.
I have a stress management program available that might prove helpful. There are several free files available on my site, and the complete program is not at all expensive. Have a look at www.seishindo.org

I have no idea about Thailand, but a long time ago in Japan, Coke would not allow but so many stores in an area to carry their product.
Finding out the truth about this should be easy enough.
-
Since I do have enough in the bank, I will just go that route, as getting back and forth to CM just for that is a drag.
AND, I also get some money from the Japanese govt. every month.
Would I need to go to the Japanese Embassy in Bangkok, or?
TIA!

I am in Chiang Rai...

When I needed proof of residence for my drivers license I got it at immigration, so I am assuming I don't need to "again" prove where I live.
Yes"
And thanks for all the other info!

I got a Non-Imm O in Vientiane, and then extended for reason of retirement.
-
I am retired.
Got the initial visa 11 months ago.
Here is what I believe I need to apply for my extension, along with some questions.
Please add items or addend, and delete.

Letter from Bank confirming balance and bank statement. (How far in advance can this be done?)

Copy of- Passport ID page (1 or 2 copies?)
Passport all previous retirement extensions (1 or 2 copies?)
Passport all previous Visas (1 or 2 copies)

I have B800,000 in the bank, but would like to offset this with my Social Security statement. Does the statement issued by the US govt. (showing yearly payout) need to be verified by the US Embassy here?
Anything else?
Anything I show here not needed?
TIA,
Charlie

Ok. Thank you.
I will go to immigration.
I have 1.5 hours to transit from BKK Airways to Thai Airways.
-
I am assuming I cannot get a re-entry permit at Chiang Rai airport, am I correct?
I will be flying to BKK and then off to Japan from there, and not enough time in BKK to mess with a re-entry permit.
So I am assuming I will need to go to Immigration ahead of time.

I guess there is nothing that works 100% on everything, but the acupuncturist I talked to who did the work on my friend, claims it is a fairly straightforward process.
-
Aikido. Did it professionally for many years.
The shoulder and the locking finger are related, and not arthritis.
-
Thanks for your thoughtful reply.
I have two lingering injuries from many years as a professional martial artist. My left shoulder has limited movement and one finger on my left hand locks up.
Both guys were getting results but the amount of pain each session was more than what made sense to me. For me, it was a metaphor that was not working- Experiencing a lot of pain in the treatments, to get over much lesser pain than I feel on a regular basis.
I could not relax during the treatments, which makes the treatments less effective.
I am trying a good massage person currently and she seems to be slowly helping.
Again, thanks for your thoughtful reply.

A very cheap and nice guest house is Cumpun Guest House. They have a website.
Well located.
If you stay there, tell them Charlie from Chiang Mai sent you.

Ok, yes, so acupuncture has already been shown as an alternative.
My problem with acupuncture here so far-
I have been to two different guys here, each with a vocal group of fans, and both of them hurt me a lot. I had about 12 treatments with each of them, and they both speak some English, AND I did not have any serious condition. I very much understand the need to get energy running, but at least one-three needles a treatment, with each of them, when they "twizzle" the needle it send an electric type jolt down my leg (either leg) that is quite painful, and I would scream out in pain. I asked them both to do less of that, but neither one of them really listened and they would both chuckle some most times.
Getting a visa in Vietnam can be a great way to go!

Sorry to not be more specific.
I got a Non-Imm O.
I did not think to ask for multi entry!
And they did not ask me.
I used a taxi in Hanoi and asked how much to the airport. He said, "About $12.
Not sure what one poster is saying about prices for taxis from the airport.
You will not get into Hanoi for VND 11,000-13,000. Of that I am pretty sure.
I thought that US$ is a currency that every person can very easily convert. Sorry if it seems lazy to some.
I made this post, only to be of service to the community.
