Of course basically here your passport is your primary ID. A Thai Driving Licence helps, as does a Yellow Book.
I can see no reason to provide a bank with any information unless that information, eg. new passport and number, or new address has changed. In which case it would be obvious so to do.
Of course as a citizen of the US, UK or wherever it is incumbent on you to declare income to IRS or HMRC or wherever
I do find it pretty unpleasant that these organisations can so interfere with the banking system of another country as to 'require' them to document information from people banking in their country! Does Switzerland comply? The Thai banks and other should tell them to push off

Has anyone ever asked for a receipt for money paid? What happened?
Every transaction with immigration normally produces a receipt on a piece of blue paper. What we do at the local immigration...a nice new year present with its provenance quite clear..to say 'thank you' for all your help Of course that is not so easy at a border

Why don't you call Banksy?

I find it quite disturbing that either a policeman can be the council Cabinet official responsible for children, or that a council member can become the police commissioner, Does not look good.does it?
Of course The South Yorkshire Chief Constable should resign. The buck stops or at least comes to rest with him. Been keeping his head down has he not?
He is David Crompton. Previously From 2004 to 2012 he served as both Assistant Chief Constable and Deputy Chief Constable in West Yorkshire. Small world? Na?
He is responsible for Integrity and Transformation within the force.Ha ha

What is 'interfering' about it. If there was any proper 'investigative' journalism in Thailand, then of course Thais can do it themselves. I don't accept that somehow Thais, particularly rich ones, are exempt from acceptable norms of human behavior. If journalists here were not so limp wristed it would be them not foreign journalists that have investigated the holdings of Thais in The British Virgin Islands, Cook Islands etc.
As with most countries, but they are allowed to manage their problems on their own terms, and not by foreigners who think they can swan in and start pointing the finger.Thais hate criticism. I don't think there is a people on the planet less able to handle even constructive criticism as the Thais. They are so self obsessed and lacking in the ability to reason that they lash out, much like a scolded child.
These archaic laws are there to prevent criticism of those with power, status and money and are a very useful tool in keeping the status quo for those that continually abuse those privileges.
Just another cultural flaw in the money-worship cult.
Thai culture, since you seemingly do not understand it, is far different than western ideology. I can give you many examples of western countries who flout human rights almost on a daily basis, with the same impunity like Asia, but Thailand does not involve itself with such matters, as it has much bigger fish to fry ATM, like sorting out the mess, which is being handled quite well by the task force empowered to address such issues.
Andy Hall, like most, knew the consequences of such actions could lead to him facing imprisonment. Whilst I understand what he's trying to achieve, it is never-the-less not his place to interfere with internal issues. Many times over foreigners have the impression that they have some bearing on Thailand, unfortunately they do not, and that is clearly echoed in the legislation that exists preventing foreigners from getting foothold in Thailand.
I for one have lived here for over two decades, and have accepted that there are some things that need to be handled by Thais themselves. Let them learn from their own mistakes, and let them solve their problems. It is after all their country, not ours.

What is Thai way of living ?
Every evening in my area , it looks like the entire neighbourhood is getting drunk. Is that considered Thai way of living??
Going to Isaan , one also sees villagers getting drunk or swinging in the hammocks, is that considered Thai way of living?
Really , I am curious as how TAT defines Thai way of living which they want to promote
Yes I am looking forward enormously to seeing the montage/expo of 'Thai Ways of Living' With luck there should, for a start, be demonstrations of motoring, drinking, sleeping, lottery playing and gambling, exhibits from Macdonalds and KFC, a 3D Son et lumiere of RCA and Petchaburi Road, a Ranong Fishing boat Experience.....No doubt the contract will be put out to tender

I think you were lucky!
These random please checks and police boxes where traffic on a fast moving dual carriageway is suddenly funnelled into one lane of stopped traffic are a real hazard. When you think of the advance warning of any roadworks in Europe and the US....say no more

Saw an interesting pic of dead bats on a Thai rice sack.

Is there any evidence that either Thai bats carry the Marburg virus or Thai monkeys harbour Ebola? Given the collection of wildlife from Laos I see in the local market, I wonder

You can drive on the wrong side of the road, but you cannot park on the wrong side of the street. It offends the Thai sense of symmetry

Read his report. It is not pretty stuff. Check out who owns Natural Fruit and it all becomes much clearer. The prosecution of the suit predates NCPO

He needs a Mae Baan to look after the house, a Mia Noi for a variety of services, ironing lessons, probably cooking too, though of course he can become a Paw Tung and naturally lessons in the subtle and not so subtle aspects of the English language. Oh and he needs accounting lessons to discover what a budget means. Something to do with being able to work out what you can afford? LOL; Issan is hardly expensive unless you decide to play cards, buy lottery tickets every day and get smashed. As for 'giving money' that sounds more like bar girls than nurses. Any parents and grand parents, let alone siblings, to be seen?

'Average' Thai salary is c.13,500; but it is a bit meaningless as there are huge variations in employment areas. A very loguacious and unusually forthcoming noodle stall holder at the end of the road said she made 30,000 a month. Not sure what the profit margin is on a 30B bowl, but that seems low to me! I reckon she was selling nearly 100 bowls/bags a day! Still more than a nurse or teacher though

I think: What has happened to my beautiful island? I'll have a dip or two and buy a ticket out. But then I don't live there. Bit like first time I came to BKK; had taxi driver do U turn near Din Daeng, returned to airport. Bought a ticket to Phuket. Roads were all dirt, roofs were all corrugated, beach was pristine. Stayed 10 years. Went back last month. Traffic jammed, wondered why I had not continued to learn Russian. Left.

In addition to the wise words about homicide and suicide above....
1. The main thing is to be "In Front" then whatever chaos is behind is not your problem
2. Keep both feet on the ground at all times.

This not as light hearted as it might be!!
I have no problem with Prayuth and his friends.
Of course if they started 'disappearing' people my attitude would change.
Thaksin who appeared to have played too much Warcraft and was apparently enthusiastic about S.American dictatorships was a 'clear danger'
My family have lived, now, in LOS for nigh on 25 years. The choice to come here was based on our experience of a number of exotic as well as boring places. USA/Mexico, UK, France, China, Japan, Indonesia, Turkey etc.
With the continuing future of the children as the lodestone, we are assessing our decisions and choices.and trying to understand the world.
We would be interested to know the views of you wise men and women on this, for a start:
How has it come about that the once great powers of the world over, say, 400 years have been brought to their knees?. Blaming it on bankers or capitalism is not sufficient. Spain, France, Great Britain, Netherlands, America, Ottoman Empire, Soviet Union/Russia, once 'powers' now, with the exception of the US, have birth rates declining so fast the populations will be irreplaceable. It appears only PRC has to some extent survived...though, even there, as elsewhere, inter ethnic strife and youth unemployment are widespread. Is any of this important?
There is not a lot to be done about rainfall; though water will surely become an issue here in LOS as everywhere. Strains of rice can be improved. Political arrangements can be tinkered with. His Majestys promotion of Self Sufficency is surely right. The question we are asking ourselves is whether within the psyche and structures of Thai society there is the capacity and desire to continue to live harmoniously and in prosperity? So that the children will be in as good a place as possible. Particularly if the rest of the world appears to be either in decline or falling apart.
So all you judges, lawyers, beach bums, teachers, bar stool veterans, kwai raisers, durian farmers, resident or otherwise..can you advise?

Read The Guardian report
http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/aug/26/rotherham-sexual-abuse-children
It makes dreadful reading.
Known since 2005. good grief
Other media have stories of children collected from school by Taxi Drivers. No teacher noticed then?.
And Dewsbury/Leeds/Bradford/Leicester/Birmingham for a start?
Will anyone actually DO anything? or will we just have Enquiries/Commissions/Reports?
I fear too, that parental neglect plays a great part. I suppose the majority of the population of Rotherham and other places are now too poor to look after their children?
Talk about a fractured society. And people ask me why we don't take the children 'home'?!!

These criminals are being protected by anti-racism laws, and the Governments refusal to accept that the immigration policies over the last 20 years have been significantly flawed. Throw in the ludicrous EU human rights crap, which means that any prosecutions get held up for years, and these scum know they can't be deported its a total farce. It's not just police incompetence.
I have to disagree with you. They are (still) protected by the worse criminals - the state, completely incompetent police who should be jailed, and by all the government agencies charged with prevention/detection of such acts, whose directors and senior staff also should be jailed. This type of corruption is 100.... no, at least 10 magnitudes worse than a policeman taking a red note for an improper turn. This type of corruption really, really hurts people - and innocent, defenceless children at that. These people are worse than the ones beating and raping the children, because they knew and refused to intervene - which was their only job.
It's not the law that's at fault, it's corruption of the very worst kind. Putting blame on the law is just justifying the behaviour of these criminals, who are responsible for what has happened even more than the actual perverts who put their hands on the children in the first place. Britain has law against harming children, many of them. These criminals did not enforce the laws, did not do their duty, took money from the state under false pretences, and BROKE the law over and over again.
.
Quite. Never mind the 'Leader' of the Council resigning; the whole Labour council, the police chief, the Head of Social Services should also resign and the MPs. Total dereliction of duty. Some parents might want to be asked a few questions, too.

The MPs for the area are
Sarah Champion MP - Rotherham
Rt Hon Sir Kevin Barron MP - Rother Valley
Rt Hon John Healey MP - Wentworth and Dearne
Do you suppose the Rt Hons have ever been there or know where it is?

Don't hold your breath! Civic Duty? How about training teachers in their 'civic duty' to actually either teach or at least provide 'hands on' facilitation of student learning? How about Performance targets for teachers, curricula expressed in terms of learning outcomes and quality assessment of schools? You can fiddle with the curriculum for eternity
Have you ever had your life threatened in Thailand?

Oh Yes! Previous father in law. Unable to deal with daughter having farang baby. Mounts the stairs wielding large knife to kill farang and grand daughter. . Unfortunately so drunk he had a stroke and fell over backwards down stairs. Still living. Thais say: Oooh Farang have very strong spirits...don't think they had Johnny Walker in mind
