want's answers? i can answer her; unfortunately the provision of and maintenance of pavements and public walkways is not a priority for national or local government, and while there seems to be no effective repercussion for not maintaining public rights of way such incidents will continue to happen. next.
it's not just thailand, i was backpacking in pakistan years ago and a fellow traveller had a nasty fall one night into an uncovered drain in an unlit street.

As much as I like to criticize, consider that in a family where both parents must work, or there is a single parent, there is no other way of getting the child to school. It's not right, but I can understand why a kid would take a motorbike to school. I rode my bike to school starting at age 8 and had to navigate some heavy traffic and did not wear a bike helmet.
of course there is another way! as a responsible adult the parent/s should arrange for a responsible adult to take the child to school on their bike and ensure the child wears all necessary safely equipment/clothing.
or the parents get together with other parents and arrange suitably safe transport for their children to school.

Actually 500 baht used to be very common upcountry and what most ATM's stocked - not sure if still true or not but 1,000 much more common in cities. The 50 baht has never been popular as too easy to mistake for a 20 baht and it a bit like the 2 dollar bill in USA - not really needed.
I suspect the PI issue has more to do with their banking system and need to have as little cash on hand as required more than the poverty issues.

eh? am is missing something?!

In the UK things have been made even more difficult, by taking away the power of Thai Consulates to issue visas any more, and making it more difficult to obtain one by post from the Embassy in London.
So, to sum up, visas are now more difficult to obtain, yet V.E. entries are being arbitrarily clamped down upon. In addition, if you have a visa as they want, and you travel around during that period, you must pay for a re-entry every single time?
Does this really encourage tourism, when some other countries nearby, issue 3 month visas, or allow visas to be obtained at the point of entry?
generally genuine tourists dont have any problems. it seems people who seek to use tourist visas and VEs to stay in the country long term who have issues; are such people genuine tourists?

Thai do not work if there not a lot of money to do.
Competent people do not exist here, forget it or learn more.
absolute rubbish. my thai friends are all well educated professionals, some own their own business. many speak english, some to a high level. they regularly travel abroad on holiday or for business. most have studied master degrees in the usa or uk.
i'm only guessing but i'd like to bet many of the thai bashers here have not, and would not be able to, study to master degree level in their second language.
it's people who hang out, date and marry with the low class and low educated thais that have this warped and distorted view of thailand and the people.

No it isn't. It's part of the old international airport which has recently had a lick of paint, i.e. putting lipstick on a pig.
I'm not a fan but can only fly to our domestic destination from DMK. Wouldn't touch it otherwise.
dont know why people get stressed and down about DM, it's what it is and seems to function relatively efficiently. i fly through there several times a year domestic and international and have never had a problem. in fact the last time i sent air aisa had installed some machines so you can check yourself in; quick and easy to use.
i guess it's relative. if you've not travelled much and not experienced much of the world then DM may seem bad but trust me there are far far worse airports out the; sana, mashad, katmandu, pokara, UB, dehli, i could go on... if you had some real world experience you'd be chilled about DM

anyone who can be in a relationship with someone whom they dont have common language ability has my admiration. i hear these long term foreigner/thai couples all the time where the thai barely speaks english and the english they do speak is awful; i mean they cant even use the present continuous or plurals for goodness sake.
what puzzles me is that the foreigner not only seems happy to listen to this awful form of the english day in and day out but also starts to mimic their parnter's use of english, making them sound, with all due respect, complete idiots.
i guess love conquers all.

Why do people insist on referring to child abuse images/videos as pornography? This is not pornography, this is simply child abuse.
there are many types of child abuse and child pornography (the portrayal of sexual subject matter for the exclusive purpose of sexual arousal) can, sadly, result from some types of child abuse but not all.

No, the authorities clamped down on child porn being sold in markets quite a few years ago , why dont you report the shop selling them ?
haha exactly... a clampdown 'quite a few years ago'... and yet child pornography is still openly on sale - the authorities have done nothing to stop it.
when you understand more about thailand you'll realise that just because the authorities say they will do something does not actually mean they will do anything.
i dont need to report anyone as everyone knows it is on sale, and, sorry to repeat myself; the authorities do nothing.

meanwhile child pornography is openly for sale at at least one street market in bangkok and the authorities do absolutely nothing.

This is global problem not just a Thai problem.
correct. but many countries are taking practical and effective steps to reduce the use of plastic. thailand pays lip service to being environmentally friendly; remember the 'save the world' slogan? people said it all the time while carrying on as before.
the government is scared of bad publicity; the u turn on the sensible banning of people riding in the back of pick ups - which would save countless lives.
the government is afraid, and to be honest probably incapable, of charging for plastic bags - an extremely effective way of promoting/encouraging primary recycling - because the poor will wail and cry about how they can't afford it...
dont expect thailand to become environmentally friendly any time soon.

in the uk the banks are falling over themselves to attract customers, it always puzzles me why thai banks and banks in thailand dont seem to want/make it difficult to get new customers. maybe they are worried about fraud or money laundering or something...

All my Thai friends ask me why would I bother to go there, there's nothing there. Well that is precisely it! No big mango, no fake floating market or obscenely overdone temple, no 'Tuscan' housing village etc. etc. Enjoy.
having travelled to 50+ countries and worked in half a dozen i can say with certainty that by far the best tourist attractions are those you find in the natural world, they may take a bit more effort but they beat paid for destinations any time

Sorry if this has been said already but surely the police, tourist or otherwise have more important priorities than some miserable git so pissed off with her job that she couldn't give a toss.
I can just imagine the headline on the Blackpool times/Herald/recorder/Reporter/Telegraph - ad infinitum, that an ice cream seller didn't smile as someone ordered a 99 with a Flake, the police are investigating with a view to revoking his licence
I went to Blackpool once and the lights were off, I didn't go to the police, I went to the hotel bar and got pissed with a shed load of other coppers out on a special job, get a life Thailand.
'Sorry if this has been said already but surely the police, tourist or otherwise have more important priorities than some miserable git so pissed off with her job that she couldn't give a toss. '
the powers that be are incapable of addressing the serious issues the country is facing, or really of any competent strategic thinking. so they look for small, easily achievable 'wins' that they can use to publicise the fact they are doing 'something', and the population, in majority, seem happy to go along, especially then there is a pro-thai/nationalistic slant.

Of course this doesn't take in to account the piles of cash that some Thais hide under their beds. In particular the older generation.
Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connectthey'd better be careful when the notes with the previous king's face on them cease to be legal tender, especially if they dont have a bank account to pay them into...

sensible people, interest rates on savings accounts have been awful for years. i wouldn't tie up my money an a savings account ata pathetic rate of interest, it doesn't make sense unless you have a specific reason for doing so. people are obviously being smart with their money, nothing wrong with that.
