  1. The problem was that the survivors couldn't get compensation out of the US courts and were forced to seek relief in the Indian courts. Union Carbide should have paid through the nose for this disaster.

So many incorrect premises here. Difficult to know where to start. US courts don't pay compensation, defendant companies do.

UCIL was a subsidiary of UCC owned by, managed by and operated by Indian public. Parent corporations are not liable for acts of subsidiary, especially when subsidiary is owned, operated and managed by others.

The tort feasor was UCIL, an Indian company. Jurisdiction was not proper in the American courts. Not US courts' fault if India has a disaster for a legal system. US court still has to follow law governing jurisdiction and venue.

As far as UCC paying through the nose, I addressed that above with parent/subsidiary liability. UCIL should be liable for damages.

Sad horrible incident nonetheless and sounds like Indian government dropped the ball here or squandered the settlement fund.

So once again why where the international arm of BP held accountable for the actions of a wholly US subsidiary of BP in the Gulf of mexico ?

I am not a lawyer, but the reason it was in US courts might have something to do with the nationalities of the 11 killed.

  2. The Indian Imm.conveniently leaves out the fact that the 30 day visa will still cost 61 US Dollars. That will be the frosty friday when I will shell out $61 just to visit that rathole for 30 days.

The high fee is to limit it to only quality tourist...
"Quality tourists" have no interest in India. They head for places like Tahiti or the South of France.
    How about Bermuda?

When I worked there 20 years ago the cheapest hotel room was $150/night. Dinner for 2 started at $100+alcohol.

    Great place, quality tourist.

  3. Raise your hand here if you've ever been bitten by a snake! I'll start... I'm start with a nasty one. Cotton Mouth Water Moccasin struck my left foot near a lake in North Carolina. I thought I was going to die, but only one fang hit and it went completely through the left side my lower Ieft toe. I was damned lucky.

Three times in 3 months.... working survey at Castaic dam in California. Western Diamondback. For what it's worth, rattlesnakes only rattle when they have time, surprise them and they strike.

This is about constrictors so why are you writing about rattlesnakes ???

I was answering the question by Local Drunk!

    Any more questions? ;);)

  5. Buriram building boom because thats where the Govt are going to build the Nuclear Power Station.

The thought of Thai government money funding building a nuclear power station with workers from Buriram is enough to make me want to live on the other side of the world.

Half will be skimmed and the rest will be substandard with local rice farmers cobbling it together.

Have you ever witnessed Thai building work and the total lack of skills?

There is,as far as I know, nothing behind this strange rumour. Solar power investment? yes.Corruption turned up there already.

Something is going on, at least in Buriram.

Just did a quick check on the internet and found something that is quite puzzling, to me at least.

Best Western Hotels has opened in Buriram, now this hotel chain is worldwide and have 13 in Thailand Mostly Bangkok and beach resorts and Buriram.

Amari Hotels Resorts & Spas is another one, having locations in Bangkok and the beach resorts and Buriram.

Corporations don't build hotels because a city has a race track or a football team, the upcoming race is a 4- day event and even if the football team is winning today and drawing fans that might change tomorrow. The hotels must be looking at something that will be bringing them customers for the long term. What?

  6. What we do know . . . he was a loser Nigerian imigrant with no job skills that became frustrated, considered or converted to Islam

From what I've seen of the pro-Islam demos in London, I think that description can be applied to most converts to Islam.

You know, I have to laugh.....

Around 30 years ago I worked with a driller (Oil Rig), salty bastard.....

He was talking about the Born Again Christians, and said "No one more pure than those that have been purified" meaning that they were the zealots.

Applies to Islam also I guess........

  7. have just completed building an aussie queensland house 100 ks from udon thani, in the bush, perfect for the hot thai climate, concrete and steel, no timber, i was involved in every stage of construction, as a 67 year old builder , carpenter, electrician, plasterer, bricklayer, and much more, it was ,for me my finest and most difficult project that i have ever attempted, most workers had never seen the materials and tools that i used, eg nail guns, super blocks, steel roof trusses, insulation and quality aluminium windows and minimal concrete posts and quality finishes, , it is finished now and many thai people want to build the same but just do not know how, it can be done, just have patience and do not get stessed out, thais learn quickly, you just have to show them what YOU want and have good planing with willing happy workers, building costs are definately on the rise in thailand, now is the time to build, once was enough for me,just got my new hip fitted after the house party, it was not easy

    But nobody will buy it.

Which is the whole point of this thread.

    And why is that?
It is a generalisation, but a high percentage of clients want to choose the location themselves or where the lady"s village is.

OP, have you seen many other houses sold in the desired location???

I know, I pointed that out in my response above.......

I was wondering if AnotherOne American was saying nobody would buy it becuse of the price or cost. Becuse while the cost difference is marginal for a Western standard home vs. a Thai standard moo Baan home the price difference is a different story....... Dual pricing structure again! bah.gif

  9. What AG Holder says at a press announcement about initiating a pattern and practice investigation into violations of civil rights statutes

Will he also be investigating Michael Brown for violating the civil rights of that store owner he assaulted and robbed?

Consider if you would my friend that vile and repugnant people who support actual and real Dirty Harry police are the object of my posts.

As opposed to the repugnant people supporting black gang bangers who rob stores and assault cops?

As to your first post, perhaps you might want to contact the Department of Justice about your (at best) tangential and quite personal issue. We pay our taxes to those guys and they would know so you're asking the wrong sub expert. You in fact seem unaware there is available to you right here sundry and free legal advice and opinion so you might want to take advantage of this remarkable rarity (see above for instances).

You do ask my opinion so my response is that it's highly unlikely or virtually impossible the Civil Rights Act of 1964 could apply to either Michael Brown or the shopkeeper.Simple robbery - unarmed robbery - is pretty much a local matter governed by state law in each state so I doubt the Department of Justice would get involved on that basis alone. DoJ investigators would be likely to gather the facts of the store event but I'd seriously doubt your marginal at best take on it would be applicable much less of any significance whatsoever.

Still, I do suggest you ask the free advice lawyer from Memphis or some such place when he swings back through here.

Your second post further illustrates my point thx.

I think you forgot about the assault along with the robbery. whistling.gif

  10. Great idea......

See http://www.alanthebuilder.com/ , so Yes it can be done.

As was pointed out so far about the Thai attitude is correct. A Thai/Falang couple might purchase a small house at a local Moo Baan, but when it comes to an expensive house, well they will want to choose the land, they will want to choose the design and they will want to choose the materials.

First and foremost is the location will be near the wife's village.

From Allan's web page "However due to the growth and demand of our company services, we are unable to carry out the smaller jobs anymore ( Unless they are within the Surin / Isaan Areas of Thailand )", so there is room for competition.

    Good Luck.

  11. This thread is about the shooting. Everything else you are quoting is a smokescreen as to the issue, the shooting! biggrin.png

Hey. It is not easy coming up with an excuses for a guy who was caught on video committing a violent robbery minutes before the confrontation with the police.

A pattern and practice investigation starts with one incident, in this case the Michael Brown homicide. Several other Ferguson PD cops have cases ongoing of civil rights violations and allegations of unconstitutional police practices or behaviors, often both.

That's the prima facie basis of a pattern and practice investigation.

The feds in Washington don't initiate a pattern and practice investigation unless they have enough evidence to see it occurring already and more than sufficient grounds to believe they will find more, much more.

You should take my word on this.

    How far we have strayed......

I have no argument with your assertion that the FPD needs to be investigated.

I would/will have no problem if the investigation reveals problems.

I would/will have no problem if the investigation leads to criminal complaints against the FPD.

I do have a problem with you asserting without the benefit of an investigation that the officer in question is a Dirty Harry Cop!

I do have a problem with your assertion that he executed Michael Brown before the finding have been released of an investigation and before the officer has stood before the court. You have a lynch mob mentality.

Oh, by the way..... Michael Brown was not jaywalking, he was using the road as a sidewalk, big difference. So your comparison to NYC isn't valid!

  12. Yeah. I really want to sit on a 12 hour flight to LHR listening to what some prat beside me rattling on about what he had for dinner last night.

Still don't have a mobile phone. Never have; never will. Refuse to turn into a brain dead, pathetic moron waddling the streets peering into a small plastic box or shouting into one on a bus.

  13. Israel has never been an ally of the UK, it has never sent troops to fight in any of our so called War's on Terror.

Quit being dishonest. It is no secret that Israel were not asked, so as not to upset Arab allies. They would have been there in a second if needed.

Correct.... we have never asked for their direct participation.

We had two Mossad agents staying at our compound in Kabul for 6 months, they were "Special" consultants to the Afghanistan Ministry of Defense. They never left Kabul during their assignment so were probably in the intelligence gathering department.

One of the agents admitted to being an obserevor in Iraq prior to coming to Kabul.

  14. Maybe the fact that the blacks are rioting, thieving, burning and destroying their own towns and livelihood, because a black was shot by a police man (ROFL at the ludicrous rationale) is enough reason to doubt the credibility of the innocence of one of their own; namely Michael Brown.

Why don't they go rioting, thieving, burning and destroying their own towns and livelihood daily for all the other deaths that their communities are responsible for, against each other?

    Nah! I didn't think so.

    Another one airdrops in.

I'll post to this specific post but I have zero expectation any worshipers and advocates of Dirty Harry police departments and Dirty Harry cops will reverse their fixed views.

Maybe someone reading along might take notice which would make it worth posting the following....

    .

OK, fine. Let's talk about 'black-on-black' violence.

These people are the ones who don't think racism has anything to do with the targeted policing, crime-ridden neighborhoods, terrible schools, and abject poverty experienced by many black Americans, because racism is so ingrained in the fabric of America that they can't even see it.

They are the ones who have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to an as-yet-unnecessary legal fund for Wilson, a man whose only claim to fame is that he killed a black kid under what can most generously be described as suspicious circumstances.

They're the ones for whom the death of an unarmed black person at the hands of a white person sparks cognitive dissonance of such magnitude that all they can do is sputter, "But what about black-on-black crime?"

    http://www.vox.com/2...son-murder-rate

Maybe the fact that the blacks are rioting, thieving, burning and destroying their own towns and livelihood, because a black was shot by a BLACK police man (ROFL at the ludicrous rationale) is enough reason to doubt the credibility of the innocence of one of their own; namely Michael Brown.

Why don't they go rioting, thieving, burning and destroying their own towns and livelihood daily for all the other deaths that their communities are responsible for, against each other?

Everyone has a free will to choose. It's what they choose to do in a heated situation that truly spells their character. Once is a mulligan. Over and over is a downright truth, no matter how much one mitigates it.

Well we are spared the words "he deserved it" but then again one can read between the lines and the rant.

The pull and tug between free will and determinism is ephemeral so I'll not cast a line in search of it. I think it's more useful and practical to speak of a cycle, as in a cycle of poverty, a cycle of despair, a virtuous cycle, a cycle of hate etc. A cycle is more clear, more readily identifiable, specific, applicable, and a cycle rotates in either direction.

For instance, the FPD killed two unarmed black men for free 14 years ago which proves the wheel keeps on turning. I don't mean to make you dizzy but the police killing unarmed black men for free is an epidemic in the United States.

And the FPD lost their mulligan a long time ago.

    Let me jump in......

You state: "For instance, the FPD killed two unarmed black men for free 14 years ago which proves the wheel keeps on turning."

What happened 14 years ago proves nothing. It just happened that there was an incident that was similar 14 years ago. It doesn't prove that this has been a continuous problem with the FPD.

You state: " I don't mean to make you dizzy but the police killing unarmed black men for free is an epidemic in the United States."

See this fact checking site: http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/regret-the-error/266133/fact-checking-claims-about-race-after-ferguson-shooting/

Who cares about airport? Shees you guys get all wrapped up too easy. Only way there now is bus or taxi. Dont need no stinkin history debate or lesson....take the bus. smile.png

Why i want take the plane from Chiang Mai to Korat?Becuase i could be there in 1 hour,or so

Why i no want take the bus from Chiang Mai to Korat?Because the fastest one is the first one in the morning:it leaves from Avenue at 3.45 and arrive Korat 16.40

If you can choose,2fishin2,what would you choose?Still the bus?

No I would drive myself from CNX to Korat in 9 hours.

Well, if Tayida is set on flying, go for it!

Despite claims on here that the airport is closed down technically it"s not...... The terminal is shut down because there are no scheduled flights, the runway has gone from a controlled airfield to an un-controlled airfield. thumbsup.gif

All that is required is that you call AOT at the specified number at the bottom of the chart, I think 48 hours before your scheduled arrival to get your clearance. 2 years ago the fee was 2500 Baht, which included someone meeting the plane and opening the gate and returning a few days later to let us back on the ramp.

All Tayida has to do is charter a plane or sucker a pilot with a plane into flying him down from Chiangmai. Will take longer than an hour though..... 350 miles direct (Need GPS), using standard NAV aids around 450 miles. Typical rental aircraft range from 100-150 mph so we are talking 3-4 hours + the weather! whistling.gif

During the monsoon season, the chances are you would hit a lot of clouds, your typical rental aircraft will not be capable of flying above that beautifull white carpet, so now you need an instrument rated aircraft and an instrument rated pilot ($$$$$$$) and it won't be a pleasant trip. bah.gif

I'm with Khwaibah on this, drive a car, you will probably need transportation when you get to town anyway. tongue.png

Oh, I wasn't aware that the train no longer stops in Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat)....... when did that happen?

  17.

While you are correct that the Korat civilian airport is closed down, even when it was open, it never shared facilities with the Air Force or Army, see below:

At the bottom of the first site you will find the chart showing the location in relation to the military fields.

The Korat airport was built miles away from the city centre which is another reason nobody can make flights to korat work. If you have to drive distance to get there in a taxi or a minibus you might as well go to BKK by road and save some cash. Before this white elephant airport was built the Thai Airways flight used to use the nearby Korat Air Force Base 10 or 15 minutes from town.

Is that not the same as I said in post 23, I guess you dont read the posts from previous pages then....lol
    HL biggrin.png

Sorry about that I was just clarifying that there are two airfields/airports/air base in Korat both have had airline flights in the past.

If you had read beyond the quoted post, you will find my ackowlegement of my error and apology.....

That being said, I can find no information about the Army facility in Korat except for the aeronautical chart..... if possible how about some information on who/when flew into Korat Army. We know Thai Air flew into the RTAF facility up until Korat Civilian opened (Early 90's).

  18.

Strictly speaking Korat airport is not a functioning airport. It is however a fully functioning RTAF base and a main base for F-16s. The RTAF have always been extremely reluctant to allow civilian flights there and only did under duress, I flew there with Thai over 25 years ago. The demand for civilian flights was always low due to the frequency of the air-con buses. What are they these days about every 20 minutes.

I must apologize, after some research, I found out that until 1990, the RTAF base was used for civilian use, again, Sorry!
