Has anyone flown from Surratthani to Buriram via Bkk recently? If so please post an 'idiots guide' as it's looking likely we(2+2)'ll be there for Songkran. Can it all be done with one airline (air asia?) & without transferring between airports @ Bkk?

    Thank you:)

The trip can be done on Nok Air....

Nok arrives from Surat Thani at 9AM and the flight to Buriram departs at 12PM +/-.

The problem is on the return, you will have to stay in Bangkok overnight because the flight to Surat Thani leaves a little past 6AM.

    All from Dom Muang Airport.

  2. "Chidchanok Somprasert, director of the 8th Irrigation Office in Nakhon Ratchasima, said water levels in five major reservoirs in the province were almost full and would be sufficient for household consumption during the dry season. But for agriculture, there is only enough water for farmland in the irrigated areas."

I have a problem with this statement.....

They have enough water for houshold consumption....... OK

There is only enough water for farmland in irrigated areas.......OK

    So what's the problem?

The un-irrigated areas of farmland? Where do they normally get their water? What's different from the past? Is there another consumer of water that they have failed to identify?

Seems to me that this is a "Make us look like we (Gov't) are busy" kind of story.

This year the plan is to build a new house in Nong Ki Issan, the land is ex rice field and has had the ground raised some 2 mtrs and this has been down settling for 2 years. I do have plans for the house but what I really need is some advice from anyone local who has done this and could recommend a building firm or a reliable builder that they have personally used or indeed one that they know of who has built houses for falang or Thai that I could talk to and possibly see their work.

    Kimera

I have high lighted an area of concern, to me.

The building pad has been raised 2 meters. This pad has been settling for 2 years..... when constructed was the pad compacted? There is a definite difference between settlement and compaction. Depending on the soil type settlement might achieve anywhere from 50 - 100% compaction. If soil from the surrounding paddy was used you will be in the lower percentile (50%) due to the high percentages of silts and clays. If the material is a pure sand or a gravel of a single size you could see compaction values approach 100%.

I have seen engineered fills designed for as little as 85% (Highly expansive clays) used for builing pads but typically the requirements are anywhere from 90-95% for compaction requiments on a housing building pad.

Failure to have a compacted pad might cause structural distress in a completed structure. There might be future issues with your underground plumbing. Please note that I use the term might, because there might be no problems, but you are rolling the dice it's your gamble.

If rebuilding the pad is a problem, the only solution I can think of would be to reduce the loads exerted on the pad. This can be accomplished by going with a mat foundation (No foundations) which eliminates column foundation BUT will be very expensive (Much more concrete and Alot more rebar). If that's to pricey of an option, you can enlarge the column and wall foundations (wider & deeper).Or you can roll the dice.

Soil will settle over time but generally will only compact with mechanical effort provided by man.

  4. When rabid animals run loose and commit acts in this fashion, its time to change the rules of engagement... in other words , play more by their rules of the uncivilized. The rule of law , as we currently know it, should be put on stand by.

Whatever your faith , dear lady, may you rest in peace.

Just bring back methods from the past that were considered successfull, such as:

According to Rear Admiral D.P. Mannix, who fought the Moros as a young lieutenant from 1907–1908, the Americans exploited Muslim taboos by wrapping dead Moros in pig's skin and "stuffing [their] mouth with pork", thereby deterring the Moros from continuing with their suicide attacks.

It worked over a hundred years ago, why not today........w00t.gif

  5. Typical local report with conflicting info..

One says it was taking off..another says was at 500 feet..one or the other!

It has only one power source, therefore it is not a hybrid..

Anyway RIP to the pilot...sounds like engine failure and he may well have/shouldhave survived the crash , but drowned once in the water...

About 1 million baht to buy when i last enquired,[5-6 years ago] so yes they are not cheap

Read it again I saw nothing conflicting.......500 feet from shore ! which usually means out not up

Yes, you better read it again:

Article 1: Staff at a nearby resort in Rawai who witnessed the accident reported hearing an explosion from the machine’s engine before watching in horror as the craft plummeted into the water about 500 meters from the shore.

Article 2: Chalong Police investigator Patiwat Yodkwan said that the 64-year-old was attempting to take off when the machine suffered engine failure.

Initial reports said that the aircraft exploded when it was about 500 metres up in the air.

Why can't it be a hybrid? Hybrid doesn't only relate to the power source........ it has the wing of a micro light and the hull of a boat that is a hybrid.

Personally, I rather like the more traditional designs.......

  7. Just as the Europeans are amazed that we Americans use "compass directions, i.e. River Market restaurant is on the WEST side of the Ping River, Riverside is on the EAST side", I guess they're also amazed that we usually keep 7 - 10 days supply of food around. I guess we come from hardy pioneer stock -- people who had to get off ships, stock up on supplies and figure out how to get themselves to new homesteads in the west.

Nancy, to continue with your thought, certain areas of the USA actually use time to tell you how far a destination is instead of mileage. In Nevada we use the amount of beer it will take to complete th journey, " How far is Reno from Las Vegas?" answer would be "Around a 12 pack!" blink.png

  8. Suggesting something COULD be the cause is not an innuendo it means it is a possibility no more no less. Take a closer look at the damaged jeep it is so obvious that high speed was involved and no that is not another innuendo I would put money on that being a fact. In cases like this pictures don't lie, and yes I was an accident investigator with the RHKP. I can assure you now, that when it came to the court case these pictures that have been printed publicly would be used in a court of law, by the police and prosecution.

One thing that is very important that has not been mentioned is the length and direction of any skid marks left by the jeep whilst braking,of course in this day and age ABS does not allow this luxury to an investigator, however I would not be sure this jeep has ABS. Also what were the road conditions ? Wet or dry

So gentlemen, there are a number of people on tv who are qualified to comment on such issues, and there are obviously others who are not ! Thank you

Wasn't addressing your post, was addressing aveabeeoror2's contribution in light of his admonishing others contributions...... biggrin.png

  9. For goodnes sake, not one of you know what caused the accident. Why the hell do you have to post such garbage, innuendo.?

Do you mean like this gem?

Sad state of affairs, and condolences to family, however, this happening at just past midnight on Boxing Day Evening could suggest alcohol involvement, terrible

Yes,being past midnight, obviously grog was the cause.
  10. "Cue pompous comments about 116kph being an unsafe speed to drive in any event? [i would dispute that and point to the fact that such a speed is legal or very near legal in many countries of the world "

I have to laugh at this statement......

Not because I don't think it's true! Because where I am working at the present time the "normal" speed exhibited by the local drivers is 150+ even though the posted speed is 120. You always have the ones with the car/SUV capable of 175. Now that is daytime..... Nights the speed drops to 100 with the daredevil who foolishly goes 120. I WON'T drive after dark! <deleted> camels!

Here in Oman, there are no traffic cops handing out tickets, everything is done with cameras. When you reregister your vehicle every year they pull up on the computer ALL you fines and have to pay them with the registration fee. Oh.... you also have to have a receipt for 4 new tires to register the vehicle every year.

I wonder if a radar jammer or scanner would warn you when near a camera setup?

  11. Thanks for that, I know while it happens in Thailand the whole country is not involved in those activities

Time to quit blaming the entire country for the sex industry, Pattaya only became such during the Vietnam war. in the 1960-1970's

    Cheers

Not really accurate..... Pattaya did not emerge until the 70's, after the Vietnam war. During the war, service men would R&R at the JUSMAG bungalos in Pattaya, at that time a sleepy fishing village. We had an outdoor theatre, Tennis and basketball courts and rental ski boats and sailboats. Fishing boats could be chartered. Nightlife was a fire on the beach with lots of beer or the movies, no bar within walking distance (No taxi or Sontows back then).

For a night life you had to go to Bangkok (No Patpong, Nana Plaza or Soi Cowboy), Petchburi Road was the place at that time.

For those stationed at U-Tapao or Satahip there were local bars near the bases. Military buses provided transportation to Bangkok (4 Hrs.).

You have to remember, Thailand was still pristene. Bangkok still had khlongs, Wireless road (Embassy Rd.) was 2 lane with Khlongs down each side and the road totally in shade from the trees lining the Khlongs banks....... Sukhumvitt was only paved to Soi 33. The floating market wasn't a tourist attraction but an actual floating market.

Then after the war, development started at Pattaya. You can't blame the US servicemen for developing the sex trade in Pattaya. Now the Philippines.......Guilty!

  12. anybody who has been to glaciers recently knows the earth is warming. Just a simple fact. It's hard to argue part of the reason is our involvement.

Sure, it is probably part of a normal cycle, but humans are responsible for a part of this. Just look at the negative impact we have had on our planet. It is easy to see.

Chasing Ice is a great documentary. Everybody should watch it.

I don't know if it is the CO2, methane, a natural cyclic change or El Nino, blah, blah, blah that is resonsible.

The fact remains, that glaciers that I climbed in the early 70's in the Sierra Nevada range in Central California are no longer there! Gone..........

Pico de Orizaba in Mexico, not gone, but probably 1/4 the size of the 70's.

    Sad, they were truley beautifull.

  13. To Footlong This is why I want to find a geologist to answer all the things I need to know To MJP the 84ppms is the total minerals found EG copper/lead/zink & other things I know I need to get some drill holes done but want best advice first Thank you for your replys Chook

    Chook,

What you are describing seems to be an analysis of soil on your property. The results of 84ppm indicate what is called "Trace" material.

Remember you also have 999,916ppm of what I will call, just plain dirt!

Depending on the mineral, for further exploration you would need to see an assay value expressed in grams per ton.

Copper, lead and zinc are not high value commodities, so to make mining possible you might need a value of 100+ for an individual mineral and a volume of material in the millions, just to recover the cost of the primary equipment required.

Suprised that they don't show silver which is normally found with lead & zinc.

  14. "Is it possible that "flood prevention" is similar to the educational system? "

Similar.......... Nah, identical! Trying to avoid major surgery with a band-aid........

I would say that a lot of people missed a few basic courses at the university when getting their degrees in engineering.

All the work and money being spent in Bangkok to deal with the problem, won't solve the problem.

    What is the problem? Development!

Nature on its' own has two main ways of dealing with rainwater, sheet flow and channel flow. When it rains the water sheet flows and a portion is absorbed back into the ground, replenishing the water table. The water eventually with find/develop a channel to carry the excess away.

When man develops a property with roads, houses and parking lots this changes the whole process...... land that was previously sheet flow now becomes channel flow. The amount of water being channelized has now increased. And in the case today, the amount of water is in excess of the capacity of the rivers, so we have flooding.

Left on its' own, nature will eventually deal with this problem by widening and deeping the rivers, but this is a slow process. The only short term solution is to dam the rivers in multiple locations, providing man some control.

The downside is the destruction of habitat for wildlife, relocation of towns and villages. Some dams outside of Chiangmai and Lampang might be able to be raised. Other areas, resevoirs might need to be constructed.

Every square meter of land that is developed upstream of Bangkok (or wherever you might be) just increases the amount of water that needs to be dealt with....... or get used to the floods.

    No simple solutions.........

  15. First of all and one more time I can see Russian bashing ...... This guy is UZBEKISTAN citizen , so why they put Russian ???????????????/ ridiculous !! How come he could take a boat out of the marina ? there are guards at the entrance asking question ( I know I have a boat there) , then you need a key to start , you need knowledge in sailing .... sounds very strange to me !

You neglected to read the OP. The owner of the boat was Uzbekistani.

The 20 year old man who stole the boat was Russian.

As mentioned in the story on PDN he used the key to start the boat and when he ran out of gas he hot stuck in the middle of the sea. This would imply that he didn't have the ability to sail and was relying on more fuel than was onboard at the time.

Maybe I'm a traditionalist but I always think it's a good idea to read a post before commenting on it.

    I too am a traditionalist.......

I always read the complete thread before writing a coment. Your thoughtfull insights were covered really early on Page 1. thumbsup.gif

  16. Trying to turn off a runway halfway down at some speed trying to abort ???? As said why not carry on with your breaking on the main runway when you have 40% of it left.

IF the short tarmac to the terminal was used then I would have thought -maybe--bad judgement by the pilot --- -error.

If he had reached the end of the runway and still at some spead he would have to try to turn off. Suppose we will have to wait for the official report on the incident---Ha Ha but rarely there is a follow up, not forgetting this is Thai Airways company---Government control ????

I might be mistaken, but since this is a USA manufactured aircraft, both Boeing and the NTSB will be part of the accident investigation team.

  17. Stop bringing your western values to Thailand... they don't work here.

Hitler is just a historical figure, no worse than Chairman Mao.. so get over it.

Stop bringing your western values to Thailand... they don't work here.

Hitler is just a historical figure, no worse than Chairman Mao.. so get over it.

Really... I dont see allot of historical figures in the mural and certainly unless my western eyes are deceiving me cant see Mao. What I can see is allot of suoerhero's of which hitler is being betrayed as one...

Given 90% of the world would regard Hitler not of the ilk of superhero then perhaps its time more western values were bought here so these people actually can have a clue about history. If the mural is supporting and congratulating the students and making the connection that they are superheros as well then i cant see what relevance hitler has unless its just to demonstate their ignorance... you may want to get your eastern values attuned to what the rest of the world would regard as appropriate.

90% of the world? I think that you should take another look at the rest of the world.......

Aside from North Africa, the rest of the this continent could care less about Hitler and his crimes, they have their own home grown purges happening today to deal with...... not sure where South Africa would stand in this debate.

The Middle East? Even though they might be sympathetic to the Jews and their treatment by the Germans, given the treatment of the Palestinians by Israel, you probably won't find much outrage these days over this issue.

South America is much like Africa in their regard to WWII aside from Argentina, Chile and Uraguay who have had long associations with Germany and Germans. To the rest, well its' past history, and the USA is the new villan on the block.

As far as Asia goes, most East and Southeast Asians are only concerned about the Pacific war. It wasn't that long ago where Japanese businessmen wouldn't go to the Philippines for fear of being murdered. The atrocities in Singapore, the rape of Nanjing...... no the Asians focused on Japan until Japan became their economic savior.

Thailand? Well Thailand has chosen not to bring attention to their involvement in WWII so they just avoid the subject!

Your rest of the world is Europe, N. America and Australia. The poster is in bad taste, true. Parts of our world should be disgusted, but don't be surprised that most of the world (By land mass) could really care less about this issue.

  18. What a lot of pig xxxx. They can not compete with the US owing to the lower production costs in America. Total crap . The US has higher wages and overheads plus the shipping costs and can still undercut our poor beleaguered farmers.!!!!!

Just wait until the free market economy in Asean kicks in and these lazy ,greedy buggers will get what they deserve. This country is doomed owing to the lack of understanding that productivity needs management , planning and effort. Three qualities not readily available here.

Also do not expect the price in the market to go down as Thailand exports a large part of it's production overseas. Cheaper pork from the US will only serve to increase their margins.

    Total crap?

Consider that in the USA, they raise pigs using hog confinement shelters. 1 shelter typically houses around 350 pigs when they are at what is called "Finishing stage" which is typically from 100 Lbs to slaughter at 250-350 Lbs. This shelter has automatic feed systems, automatic watering systems, medications administered through the water system. These shelters have automatic ventilation systems to heat and cool the shelter with no human interaction. These systems are linked to a telephone warning system which calls the owner when a system fails...... the cost of labor per pig pound is minimal in the worst case scenario.

Transportation? Consider that a typical refridgerated container will cost around $5000 to transport from the USA to Thailand, it holds around 20,000 lbs, which equates to around 7.5 baht per pound delivered to Thailand........

The US farmer doesn't have to pay for his barn, he doesn't need to purchase the feed, these costs are borne by the consolidator (Smithfield). The US farmer has a computer running the operation. And the sh*t? That is used on his fields reducing the cost of fertilization or sold to farmers without hog confinement facilities. So lets just say his electric bill is his overhead!

Nahh, the Thai farmer can't compete because they typically use old fasioned methods and are competing with an advanced system that has marginilized the Thai advantage of cheap labor. The USA is using a plug and play system the Thai's are using a tube radio..........
